Transcript
00:00This is Police Interceptors.
00:04Police Interceptors are all I for.
00:06I'm going to tell my kids about this.
00:08And you're riding with the pride of Northamptonshire.
00:11Speed one, two, zero.
00:14Ace Pursuit drivers.
00:16Contact, contact, contact.
00:18With air support.
00:19Got two out, stand by.
00:21I'm out.
00:22And a crack dog unit.
00:24If you leave, you will get hit.
00:26They bring down the bad guys.
00:30I believe you'll want it, mate.
00:32Keep the streets safe.
00:35Put your arms behind your back.
00:37Get on the floor.
00:39And battle 24-7.
00:41Get down on the floor.
00:43In the war on crime.
00:45Crash, crash.
00:47On the floor now.
00:48This is what it is, isn't it?
00:49We find them, we lock them up.
00:53Coming up.
00:54The final road in 8-0.
00:57A tire popping pursuit.
00:59Here, stop here, stop here, stop here.
01:00Get on the floor.
01:01Get on the floor.
01:02Get on the floor.
01:03I don't know what he's doing to do.
01:05The interceptors go invisible.
01:07So why haven't you stopped your car?
01:10I didn't know we won't move us there.
01:13And police dog Bryn doesn't beat him out of the bush.
01:17Police with the dog, come out now.
01:20The 7-7 Sunday night shift.
01:36Behind the wheel of a marked BMW 340 is James Brooks, alongside co-pilot Harrison Beverley.
01:43We're on the north side of the county tonight with Brooksy.
01:47Yeah, we've worked together quite a bit, haven't we?
01:49Yeah.
01:50That's how we worked together.
01:51We got big, we got rammed.
01:55Gunnabry's moving.
02:02Get out the car now!
02:03Get out the car!
02:04Get out the car!
02:05Get out the car!
02:06Get on the floor!
02:07Get on the floor!
02:08Get on the floor!
02:09So, we'll try and not do that tonight, but we'll...
02:12We'll see.
02:13We'll see what happens.
02:14What happens.
02:15Claims last words.
02:16Yeah.
02:17Buckle up.
02:19Go on forward, we'll be waiting for it.
02:23Because reports are coming in from CCTV operators about an attempted stabbing in Kettering.
02:29We've got a vehicle which has been seen on camera with some lads in it with knives and
02:34trying to attack someone.
02:35I've got back in this vehicle and driven off at speed.
02:38We've got multiple units heading there now, so fingers crossed we can get it stopped.
02:43It's believed the group of knife-wielding suspects have fled the scene in a grey Vauxhall Corsa,
02:48which another unit tracked down nearby.
02:51Riding in the middle of the road, the suspects are dead set on making a getaway.
03:12Flying over a junction into a residential street, the driver hits the gas.
03:16All available units are en route to intercept.
03:25We're going to be closest to them.
03:28The Corsa is racing towards James and Harrison.
03:31Oh, they're coming past us, they're coming past us here mate, they're coming past us here.
03:35Head on.
03:37Oh shit!
03:38A ramming at this speed could have been carnage.
03:49But the desperate driver hangs a last minute left.
03:54Taking the pursuit through the back roads.
04:03James and Harrison move into position as car two.
04:06Having three, I'll give you a stick.
04:09I'll box in.
04:14Narrow down here mate, just for awareness.
04:17Bit bumpy as well, but it'll be alright.
04:22Harrison's dream day out will be a serene walk in the North Yorkshire countryside,
04:26with his dogs and family.
04:28This evening, he'll have to settle for a rally through the gravel tracks with Brooksy and the Beamer.
04:38Comes back out on the 5x9 circle.
04:40Back on the tarmac, the driver is upping the ante.
04:54Protecting the last door, speed.
04:55Night, night.
04:56Try as they might, the suspects can't shake the growing convoy of interceptors.
05:10Taking the third, taking the third.
05:12So the alleged knife man decides to try their luck off-road.
05:21I can't wait for certain things, mate.
05:23Back to our truck, speed on, mate.
05:28The vehicle's gone off-road.
05:30Down the...
05:31No need for a sat-nav, with Bev-nav riding shotgun.
05:37Right, right, right, right.
05:40The team get all the scape routes covered.
05:44Could be here, could be here, could be on the right side here, mate.
05:47The potential will come out, I don't know where it's going to come out here.
05:52The bit that goes underneath by the stall.
05:54Back to the stall.
05:59It's a long stop.
06:02But not for long.
06:07The banding car has taken an off-road battery.
06:12We're all the way, speed 3-0.
06:15Bev-nav reroutes.
06:17Right, right, clear left, clear left.
06:18Clear left, clear left.
06:23It's slowing, moving, units move up.
06:27Other units top and tail the target, treating it to a two-car box.
06:32Four suspects are out and running.
06:36D-cam, D-cam.
06:48One, two, three, eight, zero.
06:55Following an attempted stabbing in Kettering, interceptors are pursuing the getaway car.
07:01It's been high speed.
07:03Oh, they're coming past it.
07:04Almost head on.
07:06Oh, shit!
07:08Down gravel tracks.
07:11Completely off-road.
07:12And in a last-ditch attempt to escape the law.
07:17It's slowing, units move up.
07:19Four suspects have legged it.
07:22D-cam, D-cam.
07:23Two miles, they're all in place.
07:25One, just turn ahead.
07:27One is heading straight towards James and Harrison.
07:31Watch out here, on the right, on the right, here, on the right, here.
07:34Get on the floor.
07:35Here, stop here, stop here, stop here.
07:37Get on the floor!
07:38Get on the floor!
07:39Get on the floor!
07:40Get on the floor!
07:41Get on the floor!
07:42Get on the floor!
07:43Get on the floor!
07:44Give me your hands!
07:45Give me your hands!
07:46Give me your hands, now!
07:47Get on the front!
07:51Get up!
07:56How are they going?
07:59Hello, mate.
08:00Well, Lordy, it's just down there by the car on the right side.
08:02The dog unit and police helicopter are deployed to look for the other runners.
08:14There has been a large knife located inside the vehicle as well.
08:18What am I under arrest for?
08:19Not a minute.
08:20Attempt GBH and possession of a bladed article.
08:22Harrison and James' carriage is just 16 years old.
08:27Are you unleashing this one a little bit?
08:29That's as loose as it needs to be.
08:31That one's hurting my wrist though.
08:32They're not pink and fluffy, are they?
08:33They're not designed for comfort, but the second we can sort them out, we will do.
08:37I'll tell you what, I'll spin his hand around.
08:39I'm trying to sort it out for you, mate.
08:41One suspect in the bag so far is a win.
08:45However, it's not only the bandit car that's taken a battering.
08:50I think I might have a puncture as well.
08:56A bumpy ride on the potholes has taken its toll on the Beamer's low-profile tyres.
09:02It's hissing, so I have to sort that out.
09:06Might be able to limp it back.
09:08The Beamer started the night with a PSI, or pounds per square inch, tyre pressure of 38.
09:2024 PSI, Sergeant.
09:21You might just get there.
09:23Fingers crossed.
09:25Another unit will take the suspect to custody, so James can get the Beamer back to the nick
09:30before it develops a no-profile tyre.
09:34Good skills though on that back row, because that is a horrific road.
09:37Slippy.
09:38Yeah.
09:39We've only got one at the minute.
09:40The helicopter's still up.
09:41The dog's out, tracking still.
09:44It's frustrating not to get everyone, but the police have managed to stop the car.
09:47We get the car back, there'll be forensics in it.
09:49We've got one of the offenders, so no damage to the police vehicle,
09:52apart from a little popped tyre, so take it.
09:56Three more suspects were identified and arrested.
10:02One was sent back to prison on recall, one was convicted of threatening behaviour,
10:06and another pleaded guilty to having a knife.
10:09Harrison's catch was released without charge.
10:12As for Harrison James and the limping BMW 340...
10:1515 PSI, I think we made it back on.
10:19I think that's what happens when we go off-roading, in a 340.
10:26Northamptonshire Police Dog Section boasts 13 highly trained handlers, each armed with the creme de la creme of the canine world.
10:46Handler Lucy Scullthorpe is crewed with drugs, cash and firearms sniffer spaniel socks.
10:55Indication?
10:58Good boy!
11:01One minute.
11:02As well as the German Shepherd super tracker, Bryn.
11:05I think in terms of certainly police dogs that I've had, Bryn's the best tracking dog.
11:15He just seems to have a natural ability for it, and he also seems to really enjoy it.
11:20To him it's a game, you know, he finds somebody at the end, and he either gets a bite reward, or the ball, and he just loves it.
11:28He loves the game, and he loves finding people.
11:30Up in the north of the county, interceptors are attempting to pull over an uninsured Land Rover Defender.
11:43That's not my thing. I've been drinking.
11:46Bus exporting the unmistakable aroma of cannabis.
11:53It's touch and go as to whether this driver is going to stop.
11:58Despite his hesitation, he parks up for a chat.
12:02With Ian Bomber Bayliss and the Sarge.
12:05That's the vehicle got it, sir.
12:07It's on trade policy.
12:09Right, have you got any proof of that?
12:11Can you get up?
12:12I've got it on the phone, yeah.
12:13Should have.
12:15The trio inside seem only too happy to help.
12:18Hello.
12:19Are you doing me a pay, then?
12:21Oh.
12:22Can you send me that in short picture?
12:25Until the driver has a change of heart.
12:28You boys over here, then.
12:29And slips away.
12:31Leaving his two passengers behind.
12:33Can I go get you?
12:34No.
12:35No.
12:36No.
12:37Listen, I got no weed.
12:38No, put your hands behind your back.
12:40Cue Lucy, Socks and Bryn.
12:45So we're going and there's another crew going just to see if we can find the driver.
12:50Obviously it needs to be dealt with for the no insurance offence.
12:53And then apparently there's quite a strong smell of cannabis coming from the vehicle as well.
12:57So it might be that we can use Bryn to track the driver.
13:03Then we also might be able to use Socks to search the car.
13:06See if we can find any drugs in there.
13:09He's holding me down a bit.
13:11Back at the scene, Bomber's got his hands full.
13:15Both passengers are detained for a search.
13:18They've got a fair bit of cash on you.
13:21You never know when you're going to get stranded, do you?
13:24They might be loaded, but it's not with drugs.
13:27Well, we've got no reason to run for it.
13:29We can smell the weed down the road.
13:31Exactly.
13:32So we'll search the car.
13:33If there's nothing else in it, we'll get your details and we'll cut you two loose.
13:37Yeah, yeah.
13:38All right.
13:39But we're having the vehicle away.
13:40Yeah.
13:41The lads claim they've made a 30-mile trip from Peterborough to play snooker.
13:46Just please not come in, right?
13:48Yeah.
13:49It's going to end up getting bit, probably.
13:51Now the driver is playing a risky game of hide-and-seek.
13:58Bryn's favourite.
14:00Is this a scar?
14:02Yeah.
14:03Yeah.
14:04He's literally, I've watched him go up first left loose.
14:06Cheers.
14:07Cheers.
14:08Bryn.
14:09One try.
14:10And he's off.
14:14In Lucy's 15 years of catching criminals, she says the best words of wisdom she's ever
14:19received is to always trust your dog.
14:25Bryn is armed with a sense of smell estimated to be at least 10,000 times more sophisticated
14:31than a human's.
14:32Try to come.
14:33Odds are the driver is already snookered.
14:38Right, police with the dog, come out!
14:39Come out!
14:40Police with the dog, come out now!
14:41Do you hear me?
14:42Come out from the bushes now!
14:51Do not run!
14:53Do not run away!
15:03watch him watch him i reckon we just found him you know you reckon
15:13there's not a lot that gets away is he choke up another win for brin
15:21yes good boy good lad only a short track but i was fairly confident there was somebody here
15:30because of the way he was acting around there i think he was very head up and then as soon as
15:34we've got on the grass he's zipped down here and found him hiding in the bush so clever lad what a
15:40good boy a quick pat down reveals the source of that smell all right got cannabis on yet
15:51okay at this moment in time you're under arrest for driving with no license no insurance and
15:55possession of class b will you be willing to provide me with a roadside sample for a drug
16:00wipe test yes or no brin's find is refusing the drug wipe and the super tracker has sniffed out
16:11something else in the bushes uh mobile phone okay that would be why brin wanted to get back in the
16:19bush um he's obviously left his phone in there potentially for a reason so we'll seize that
16:29do you know what the best thing is when you get the person that you're after
16:32and that the dog has facilitated that um that's the absolute best bit of my job is why i do it
16:38yeah did you give my name huh you give my name i ain't said nothing we're going to find out who
16:44you are anyway so yeah we will do yeah ultimately if you don't have no problem listen do you go
16:49wait stop does it look like i want to talk to you to be honest with you the smell of the cannabis
16:58was so strong we could tell it was definitely coming from that vehicle because it followed us
17:02everywhere it followed it everywhere we went he's got a fair bit on him but um we'll see if he wants
17:08to provide a sample i mean i suspect he's probably had a few drinks if he's got the cannabis on him
17:15he's probably had a smoke so we'll find out when we get the custody custody what he wants to do
17:23before they head off to custody it's socks q to get to work there's obviously a suspicion that there
17:29might be some more in the car um and if there is then hopefully the quickest way to find it is with
17:34socks um who's trained on drugs cash and firearms so he'll find any naughty things that are in there
17:46what's he found
17:53check check
17:54check out
18:13you're very interested in here but the whole thing smells of cannabis isn't it sir but i'm happy there's
18:18There's no other drugs in there.
18:20He'll just be seized for no insurance.
18:22And he's obviously gone on his way to custody.
18:25And Brad's grooming my dog for me.
18:31Look at his face.
18:36Oh, socks, come here.
18:40The driver's snooker buddies are free to start the long walk home to Peterborough.
18:44Leaving the driver to the post-game interview at custody.
18:51Have you, since the time of the alleged offence, consumed or used any of the following things?
18:57And if so, what?
18:58Any alcohol or other drink?
19:03Have you taken anything?
19:08So do you need me to provide any of this vestment of sale?
19:10And if not, I'll take that as a failure to provide and you'll be charged with the events of failure to provide.
19:15Nope. Lovely.
19:16Off. Done. Thank you.
19:20The defender offender pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen driving without insurance and possession of cannabis.
19:28He was banned from the roads for 17 months,
19:32handed a 12-month community order and racked up £399 in fines and costs.
19:38Coming up.
19:46No, don't pull my leg.
19:47I'm under arrest.
19:48I'm not under arrest.
19:49A good Samaritan at one job.
19:51Let's jump up here in the Fard Ranger.
19:54Ends up a drink driving suspect at the next.
19:57Keep going, keep going. Stop.
19:58It'll be over. Let's see what it comes from.
19:59It'll be over, mate.
20:00It'll be over.
20:02And.
20:02It doesn't look like Callum will be getting a five-star rating.
20:11Your driving wasn't great.
20:12Working a chilly Saturday early shift are Harrison and Sam.
20:36My alarm clock didn't go off this morning, so at 20 past six, I rolled over and there went, ah.
20:4320 past six?
20:4420 past six.
20:45Oh, shut up, man.
20:46I'd left 20 minutes before I'd end.
20:49I was like, I'll have a bit of a lie in.
20:51I was 20 past five.
20:52I moved to the room because it's a dog.
20:54I could hear his tail banging.
20:55Then he brought me his toys to start playing.
20:56I was like, ah.
20:59And it's been all go from there.
21:01It's only 8am and a serious job is coming in.
21:08Strange.
21:09It started off as a, um, came in as a robbery, checked with a head injury, two phones being nicked.
21:15But I think he's in and out of consciousness.
21:16Sounds a bit nasty.
21:18Not what you'd expect the first thing on Saturday morning, but ambulance haven't given an ETA in the minute.
21:23So we've just been asked to make down with the fast aid, just to assess him, basically, to see if we can help.
21:3130 seconds.
21:37Rhodes Policing Interceptors have advanced first aid training.
21:41Skills which could prove vital until paramedics are on scene.
21:49Well, you've got a bandage.
21:51Yeah, what do you want?
21:52You're always at work, isn't it?
21:53All right, just keep it clean.
21:54All right, mate.
21:56Stay away, stay away.
21:57That's it, buddy.
21:58Come on, wait, wait.
21:58Harrison tries to stem the bleeding from wounds on the victim's head.
22:03Do you keep speaking to us, all right?
22:05As an ambulance crew arrives.
22:08Keep breathing, please.
22:09Keep breathing.
22:09It's cold out of there with your hand.
22:11Local residents are also stepping in to help the injured man.
22:15Why is everyone grabbing me?
22:16No, no, no.
22:17What's going on?
22:18Big, big, big.
22:20I know he's probably drank something.
22:21How much does he have?
22:22I don't think so.
22:23You don't think so?
22:24I'm not moving till I ask you around.
22:25The victim is becoming increasingly agitated.
22:30No, no, don't pull my leg.
22:32I'm under arrest.
22:32I'm not under arrest.
22:33And will be rushed to hospital for assessment.
22:37Every minute or so, he just goes blank.
22:39Then he starts shouting again.
22:41It's just concerning that he's got serious head injury.
22:44The scene is taped off for further investigation into the alleged robbery.
22:49And Harrison and Sam get back on the road.
22:51Although they don't get far.
23:00Officers at the last scene have called in the next jump.
23:03So there's a basic incident we've just been to in town.
23:06The chap that's assisted with that, this chap up here in the Ford Ranger.
23:12Officers weren't convinced if he'd had a drink or not.
23:15But couldn't smell the alcohol, but were just not convinced by his general demeanour.
23:19But given the time of morning, given the size of the vehicle, we'll just give it a stop
23:24and just see if he's in order driving wise.
23:27You're getting ready for the breath test, if you're happy to do that.
23:38You alright, sir?
23:39The reason we've stopped you, officers are very concerned on the scene,
23:43that you may be under the influence of alcohol.
23:45Really?
23:46The bystander had nothing to do with the man's injuries.
23:49Although his behaviour has landed him in the spotlight as a suspected drink driver.
23:55I have just smelt some alcohol as you've walked towards me.
23:59Have you had a drink?
24:00Yeah, last night.
24:01Last night. How much did you have to drink?
24:04Please don't do this to me.
24:05How much did you have to drink last night?
24:07Quite a lot.
24:07Quite a lot?
24:08Probably a bottle of wine.
24:09A bottle of wine.
24:10Do you want to come to the back of the car?
24:11Yeah, this is my life over.
24:13It's your life over?
24:14When was the last time you had an alcoholic drink?
24:1610 o'clock. No, probably later.
24:18Later than 10 o'clock, about midnight, OK.
24:20Eight hours later, he could still be over the limit, which is 35.
24:26Blow steadily and evenly, and that'll tell you to stop, all right?
24:29It'll be 34.
24:32Well, that's under then, so you'll be fine.
24:33Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going. Stop.
24:35It'll be over.
24:36Let's see what it comes back.
24:37It'll be over, mate.
24:39I've just lost my job.
24:41You haven't blown anything yet, so...
24:43See what it blows. Let's see what it returns.
24:45Come on.
24:45Just...
24:46Okay, that's a fail.
24:48I know it's a fail.
24:49Okay, you've blown 64.
24:53Okay, so the time is now 8.30, and you're currently under arrest,
24:56driving whilst I'm just scribbling.
24:57You don't have to say anything, but may harm me to fail.
24:59Do you want to mention one question, something later, like, caught?
25:00Anything you do, say anything.
25:01Just put your hands out in front of you like that for me.
25:02I've been done before.
25:03You've been done for drink driving before?
25:04Yeah, you don't need to do that.
25:06Well, I do.
25:07If you've been done for drink driving before, you should know better.
25:09Can you just please ring my wife?
25:12I'm meant to be picking her up in a minute.
25:14The drunk driver was setting off on a 140-mile journey to Portsmouth.
25:18Portsmouth, almost twice over the limit.
25:24And that's true.
25:26Absolutely.
25:30Mercifully, Harrison is taking the two-ton truck off the road.
25:33I can't believe I've spent a last hour of help.
25:38Regardless of whether you helped us or not, you still made the conscious choice to get
25:41behind the wheel of your truck when you were over the limit, didn't you?
25:44Yes, stupidly.
25:45And that's my mistake.
25:47But it's not only that.
25:48I can't believe one of them didn't say,
25:51Do you know what?
25:51I'll smoke up on your breath, mate.
25:52It brings a lot to me, doesn't it?
25:54You let me out the road.
25:56How pathetic?
25:57Not pathetic.
25:59It's your choice.
25:59Do you just...
26:01You can only enforce a law.
26:02I think the fact of the matter is you've got to take some personal responsibility for this,
26:05haven't you?
26:06Recent figures for Great Britain show that fatalities as a result of drink driving
26:11are at a 12-year high, with around 260 people killed in collisions, involving someone over
26:17the limit.
26:19Zero sympathy.
26:20We went to one of these last night, which is a fatal collision.
26:23It's not something...
26:25You can blame the police all he wants in terms of stopping him.
26:28He's an adult.
26:29He's made his decisions to drive today.
26:31It's a massive car.
26:32It's a massive truck.
26:33If he hits anyone, he's going to cause significant harm or injury, or even worse.
26:37So it's good to stop him and hopefully get him off the road for today, at least.
26:41Harrison needs to let the drink driver's family know that the road trip to Portsmouth is
26:47off.
26:48Hello.
26:49My name is Peter Beverley from the Ruzz Police Team in Northamptonshire.
26:52You OK?
26:53I've been done for drink driving.
26:54He's going to have to come to the police station for a little bit.
26:56Yeah, sorry to ruin any plans that you have.
26:59He can speak to you later.
27:01It's not an issue.
27:01I just...
27:02I understand he's on the way to pick you up, but unfortunately, that won't be happening.
27:09Next destination for this driver.
27:11It's custody.
27:13I appreciate it's the night after.
27:16You might not think he's drink driving, but his demeanor, the second he got out of that
27:20vehicle at the roadside, he fully suspected that he was going to be over.
27:25And if you think that, the simple answer is don't drive.
27:29It starts tomorrow and it's only 10 to 9.
27:31Good morning.
27:36It's not a good boy.
27:38I'll get that, I'll get that.
27:39I've helped police officers out in an instant and I still took the choice of getting in the
27:44car and drive.
27:45And I didn't realise I was over the limit.
27:49I suspected I was.
27:51And they still let me out of the scene and drive away.
27:55I've got a breathalyzer on that van.
27:56I breathalyze myself every morning before I drive.
28:00Because I drive for a living.
28:01A DIY breathalyzer is a shaky defence.
28:07Harrison introduces the driver to the real deal.
28:10Keep going.
28:12Keep going.
28:12Keep going.
28:13Perfect.
28:15It's your first one done.
28:16Take a seat from me.
28:17It's 9.27.
28:18First sample provided.
28:19Two samples of breath are taken.
28:31Keep going.
28:32Keep going.
28:33And the lowest reading will be used as evidence.
28:3669.71.
28:38You're going up.
28:40At around double the limit, it's a fail.
28:45I know people struggling in their lives.
28:47I know that people have got a lot going on, which we can safeguard people to a point with.
28:51However, we see firsthand the devastating effects, what drink drivers can cause.
28:56It's a big vehicle.
28:57If that hits you, he's probably going to be okay.
28:59The vehicle which he hits may not be.
29:01Saturday morning, it's been busy on the road.
29:03So, no sympathy.
29:05No.
29:08After pleading guilty to drink driving, the man was sentenced to a 17-month driving ban
29:13and ordered to pay a fine and costs totalling £1,725.
29:30Losing your driving licence isn't always down to breaking the law.
29:33All drivers over the age of 70 have to renew their licence every three years.
29:41And the DVLA can revoke a licence on medical grounds.
29:45With the older drivers, they've been driving for a number of years.
29:48They consider themselves to be safe.
29:50However, their reaction time could be impaired and things like that.
29:53So, if someone's had their licence revoked, in essence, they really shouldn't be behind the wheel.
29:59You're driving, effectively, a weapon that can cause serious harm, if not death.
30:05So, it has to be taken seriously.
30:15It's bad, isn't it?
30:16M.O.T. expires in November.
30:24Might want to get an earlier one.
30:27Jesus.
30:29He would not do very well in a U-led zone, would he?
30:33Once the air has cleared, interceptors Callum Donoghue and Rachel McCready
30:37turn their attention to looking for a motor with a marker.
30:42It has a revoked, refused driving licence.
30:45It should be coming past us shortly.
30:49We're waiting for a red Kia Sportage.
30:56Very royal.
30:57Yeah.
30:59One red Kia Sportage firmly on their radar.
31:10Oh, boy.
31:15Pulling ahead of the elderly driver, they try the gentle approach to stopping him.
31:20Go for it.
31:23Using the unmarked Volvo's rear matrix board to ask the driver to follow them.
31:29Really?
31:30Really?
31:33He's overtaking the interceptors.
31:34I don't think he's got a driving licence.
31:38Er...
31:39I don't really know what he's doing, does he?
31:41No.
31:43The gentle approach had no effect, so Callum tries a noisier one.
31:47He might be.
31:56He needs to go stay back on the matrix.
32:00I've got a clue what he's doing.
32:01If this is a fail to stop, then advanced driver Callum, who's trained in pursuits and Stinger, is the man to handle it.
32:14If he doesn't come up with the next one, we'll call it in.
32:17Yeah.
32:19Rachel even tries a good old-fashioned hand signal.
32:22But the Kia driver sails past the next exit.
32:27Romeo Papa 6-1.
32:29Got a very slow vehicle failing to stop.
32:32A45 westbound towards junction 15.
32:37Worryingly, he's heading for the M1.
32:40Intel to suggest a driver's got a revoked driving licence.
32:43We've tried to follow him, but he's ignored it.
32:46We've been past the last four junctions approaching the services now, and he hasn't made any attempt to stop.
32:50Motoring onto the M1.
32:54He's seen you now.
32:55Yeah.
32:55He just looked in his mirror.
32:57This fail to stop is reaching the five-minute mark.
33:026-1, we're lane 1 of 4, speed is 6-0.
33:08Backup is arriving.
33:09The next approach is to try and corral the Kia driver into one of the emergency areas on the Smart Motorway.
33:176-1, we're down to 4-0 miles an hour now.
33:21And it looks like the plan is finally working.
33:2594 over 8, we're into the ERA bay.
33:28No one's in a live lane.
33:28We'll be telling you to stop if you have it.
33:41I'll leave it with you.
33:44Hello, sir.
33:45The reason we've stopped you, have you got your driving licence on you?
33:49No.
33:50Where is it?
33:53DVLA.
33:53The DVLA?
33:54Yeah.
33:54Why have they got your driving licence?
33:56Oh, thank you, sir.
34:01They haven't set me that way.
34:04So why haven't you stopped your car?
34:06I didn't know you wanted me to stop.
34:08So I pulled in front of you with a follow me sign on my car.
34:13You've overtaken me.
34:15We've then been sat behind you for the last ten minutes with blue lights and sirens going and you've made no attempt to stop.
34:21You can't say you couldn't see us because we were in front of you at one point with the blue lights on.
34:25Yeah, yeah.
34:26Hello, yeah.
34:26So why did you drive around me?
34:32A quick check on police systems confirms this is the 82-year-old driver they were looking for.
34:39Okay, so you haven't got a driving licence at the minute because they've taken it off you.
34:43Yeah, so why are you driving?
34:48I'm not going to nick you.
34:51We'll be taking the car off you, though.
34:54I don't want to break this back.
34:56I don't think you're safe to be on the road.
35:00This is what works.
35:02But you're not fit to drive, which is evident...
35:06That's what I'm saying that night.
35:08It's evidence.
35:09That's what I'm saying that night.
35:10It's evidence by the fact you haven't stopped the police for the last ten minutes.
35:15It's a conversation to be continued in the safety of the service station.
35:20There you go. Just jump in there for me.
35:26Callum hops behind the wheel of the Kia and Rachel takes the Volvo.
35:30I've dealt with a few older gentlemen who have been quite keen to keep their driving licences.
35:40It's their last bit of independence.
35:41It's not all about taking him off the road because he's committed a road traffic offence, but it's also from a welfare perspective.
35:48He shouldn't be driving.
35:49He was quite clearly confused.
35:53And it's things like that that can cause quite serious collisions.
35:56I mean, the M1 is quite a fast motorway.
36:01And the last thing we need is someone who's not fit to drive, driving on the motorway and causing a collision.
36:09Reaching the services, it seems Callum's in the bad books.
36:13I've offered him a lift, don't you? If he'd tell me where he lives.
36:15But I think ever since I've called him a rubbish driver, he's started to start ignoring me.
36:19So, see how far rage gets with him.
36:21Hello, sir. Do you live at Buckthorn?
36:26Yeah.
36:27Yeah, you do. OK.
36:29That was quick.
36:31Inside, I'm a rubbish driver.
36:33Your driving wasn't good?
36:34I drive, but it's better than him.
36:37So, my colleague's an advanced driver.
36:40So, I'm not. I've been driving.
36:42I don't think you are.
36:43I've been driving to carry about 18.
36:46OK, I'm not taking that away from you, but your driving standard at the minute, especially today, wasn't very good.
36:51And the DVLA have obviously revoked your licence for a reason.
36:54No, I didn't.
36:56It's been revoked, and it's been revoked for quite some time.
37:00Rachel reports the disagreeable driver for failing to stop and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.
37:08I'm not asking any more questions.
37:10That's OK. No problem at all.
37:11What we need to do is we just need to wait for your vehicle to be recovered, and then we'll figure out how we're going to get you home.
37:18Do that.
37:19I will. Don't worry.
37:20What's wrong with it?
37:22Just based on his age, he's going to be too vulnerable to leave in the services.
37:24He's got no one else who can come pick him up.
37:27Which means his taxi driver this afternoon will be...
37:31Callum.
37:32Can you jump in here, sir?
37:36Strange failed to stop.
37:38I've not had one that slow before.
37:40He's very much aware that he's not supposed to be driving, and I think he's just quite annoyed that he's been caught.
37:44So, good job in the fact that we've got him off the road, for his safety and everyone else's.
37:50But yeah, just need to get him home safe now.
37:53For driving with a revoked licence, the 82-year-old received three penalty points.
37:58If he gets his licence back.
38:01He also paid a £100 fine, along with a £50 fine for failing to stop for the police.
38:07Still to come.
38:15Don't know how he's turned it on.
38:16It's all hands on deck.
38:18I think you're just pulling my foot forth.
38:21To start a stolen motor.
38:22Clearly, I don't have the car thief skill set, do I?
38:25What was that?
38:26Car thefts rose by almost 5% in Britain last year, with over 64,000 cars being reported stolen.
38:50That's the equivalent of one precious motor being nicked every eight minutes.
38:56Tracking down stolen vehicles is no easy feat.
39:01But this afternoon, dog handler Ash Price has a lead.
39:07So, you've got a vehicle's activated cameras on the motorway that's coming down into our force area.
39:13From Leicestershire, I believe.
39:16That's been stolen in an aggravated twock that happened yesterday.
39:21Whoever is behind the wheel of the stolen red Vauxhall Astra,
39:25probably isn't expecting a blue light welcome from Northamptonshire's finest.
39:31It's got a car on every motorway junction now.
39:35They've crashed the car into something else to get away.
39:38So, already kind of shown an element of recklessness and willingness to escape.
39:44If the suspect tries to escape today, the team are planning to greet them with a T-Pak or multi-car box.
39:54It's only a matter of time...
39:57It's junction 15.
40:00Until a firearms unit spot the Astra five miles up ahead.
40:08Just let the ARV push past us.
40:11We've got one ARV behind it, another one in front of us catching up, and then us as well.
40:21It's doing 70, so we should be able to get on to it, I think.
40:27While Ash and other units put pedal to the metal to catch up, news comes in from the front.
40:33So, originally, it was going to be a three-car box or a multi-vehicle box on the motorway,
40:40but the vehicle's not changed its manner of driving at all with the marked vehicle behind it.
40:45So, I think they're going to go for a follow me and a compliant.
40:51It sounds like the driver is playing ball.
40:54However, the same can't be said for the rain.
40:57Weather now, though.
40:58So, they've just passed the Newport Pagnuil services, so we should be on top of them imminently.
41:09No chance of rain stopping play here.
41:11So, this is the vehicle here, just in front of this van.
41:17Three units surround the stolen red Astra and light it up.
41:22We've just got a traffic motorbar that's putting a bit of safety on for us, just in case.
41:28But the suspect driver takes part in a textbook-compliant stop.
41:41It's a swift job.
41:44A suspected car-thieping cuffs.
41:47Never been arrested on the plan.
41:48I think that's fine, mate.
41:49And a stolen car recovered.
41:52Although there is a slight hitch.
41:56I don't want to push it all in and it disappears.
41:58Are you surprised?
42:02The Astra's key has snapped.
42:05No.
42:06I don't know how he's turned it on.
42:08How does he start it?
42:09Unless he's wedged it in there.
42:11Oh, yes.
42:12Hang on.
42:14Have you got your foot on the clutch?
42:15Yeah.
42:17He's doing something.
42:20I don't know how he's turned it on.
42:22Do you want me to go and ask him about how he starts?
42:23Yeah, go on.
42:26The suspected car-thief is taking a compliant stop to a whole new level.
42:32In the process of stealing that car, I think he snapped the key.
42:35But there's a car-thief's trick, I guess, into starting a vehicle with a stolen key that he's trying to demonstrate while in handcuffs.
42:45What's he doing?
42:48Lieutenant.
42:50Hey, get back.
42:51What's going on?
42:54He's had his charge.
42:55Go.
42:56Yeah, it's not working.
42:57Don't worry.
42:58How are you going?
42:58Oh, mate, you've had your chance.
43:00It'll be fine.
43:00We'll sort it.
43:01Don't for this, man.
43:01Don't for this, man.
43:02Yeah.
43:03Oh, you couldn't start either, to be fair.
43:05Don't for this, man.
43:09Ash gives it another go.
43:10Oh, please work.
43:12Please work.
43:13You're getting right underneath.
43:14Are you pressing something there?
43:16I don't know what.
43:17Rather than call out a recovery truck...
43:19I can feel something moving.
43:23Oh, not that much for sure.
43:25The team would rather get the Astra moving.
43:28I think you're just pulling my foot, Paul, if I'm honest with you.
43:33Clearly, I don't have the car-thief skill set, do I, to start the stolen vehicle.
43:39As the saying goes, if at first you don't succeed...
43:43It's just annoying me now that we can't do it.
43:45Try.
43:46Or do you plunky-punch?
43:48Do you want to try to turn the key when I work with you?
43:50Yeah, hang on.
43:51And try again.
43:53What was that?
43:54It's turning.
43:57OK, hang on.
43:57Keep doing that.
44:00Oh!
44:02Just needed a woman's touch.
44:07Oh!
44:08We celebrated way too much with that.
44:10It's celebrations all round.
44:15The victim was reunited with their stolen motor.
44:18And the suspect pleaded guilty to driving without a license or insurance and got six points on any future license.
44:26He received no further action for the alleged aggravated vehicle taking or burglary.
44:31Teamwork.
44:33Teamwork.
44:33Teamwork.
45:01Teamwork.
45:02Teamwork.
