AC/DC INSPIRED RUNNER CROSSES AUSTRALIA IN LESS THAN A MONTH
WITH PIX AND VID
By Shuk Yee Tsang
A determined endurance runner was filmed crossing vast stretches of Australia, pushing his body to the limit while facing extreme heat, isolation and encounters with deadly wildlife along the way.
Rob Pope, 47 year old from Liverpool, UK from ran nearly 2,000 kilometres across Australia, inspired by AC/DC and driven by a mission to raise money for charity.
The route stretched across the country from Melbourne to Brisbane and became as much a mental challenge as a physical one, with long days on exposed roads, limited support, and constant calculations around food, water and pace.
Along the journey, Rob encountered a frightening moment involving a highly venomous brown snake, forcing him to flee mid-run.
He also carried through despite injuries such as Achilles tendonitis, glute injuries, and constant pain all in the name for charity.
The run aims to raise £40,000 (around $80,000 AUD) for charity, supporting the NSPCC, World Wildlife Fund, and Australian children’s charity The Smith Family.
He has raised $20K AUD so far but hopes to earn his target.
Mr Pope was running with his trusted wheeled jogging stroller he named Rosie, that carried all his much-needed items for his 28 day run.
The total distance was deliberately set at 1,973 kilometres, marking the year AC/DC were formed.
A band Rob listened to throughout the challenge and used as a personal rule, whenever AC/DC played, he was not allowed to stop running.
Rob said,: “So the motivation this time was really about doing something meaningful.
"These runs take so much out of you that there has to be a point to it.
“AC/DC were one of my go-to bands when I needed motivation.
"I made a rule that whenever AC/DC were playing, I had to keep running. I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t stop.
“When I realised the distance across Australia lined up with their formation year, 1973, it just felt right.
“The total distance was 1,973 kilometres, which is special because AC/DC were formed in 1973.
"When I reached the stadium, I ran extra laps to hit the exact number.
“I was running close to 70 kilometres most days, in temperatures over 30 degrees, constantly thinking about water, food, safety and pace.
“At one point, I was attacked by a brown snake. It’s one of the most dangerous snakes in the world. It struck the stroller I was pushing and I had to run.
“Despite everything, you’re surrounded by incredible scenery and wildlife, and you try to take that in even when you’re exhausted.
“The goal is to raise around £40,000 or $80,000 AUD. Every penny goes to charity. Nothing comes to me.
"AC/DC’s management surprised me by producing inflatable guitars, signing 100 of them, and selling them for charity.
" Every dollar goes to the causes."

00:00Here's all my stuff for the run. Speaker, it's got to be Marshall. Some lights, first aid kit because everything in Australia wants to kill you. Pants, three pairs. Food, strawberry milk, electrolytes. I'm pretty certain that's all I need to eat. Some shorts, some shades because it's hot. Some cool reflective shorts in case I decide to run late into the night.
00:30Day two of rocking all the way from Melbourne to Brisbane following the ACDC tour. Well, hey, it doesn't matter. We got there. I saw kangaroos, my first ever black cockatoos, even an echidna, which is amazing. I had an amazing knowledge that Brian Johnson of ACDC dedicated back in black to me at the MCG and some of the guys from the ACDC forum found me on the road and told me that I wasn't actually imagining it.
00:57Managed to get 88 kilometers on the board, which was huge. It'd be nice if we keep that up. The only bad thing about it was I got to my motel and the pub and the restaurants and the shop were all shut.
01:09So I had to make do with half of a 30-hour-old subway, some protein powder and a load of cookies.
01:17It's day four of the highway to help all the way from Melbourne to Brisbane following the ACDC tour. This is your day three recap. Going up and down massive muddy tracks. God knows how Rosie survived it all.
01:33So I was pushing things up 45 degree gradients. It was like being in the Barclay, but having a baby with you as well.
01:41So day five on the highway to help.
01:43Whee! Me and Rosie are having a lovely time.
01:49Lost me cat.
01:53I'm debating whether to go back for it or not.
01:55This is now day seven on the highway to help.
01:59The menu for today already had me starter.
02:03Next, Illabo, then Bethungra, then Kutamundra.
02:07Unfortunately, I'm not going all the way to Yonge today.
02:12Day eight on the highway to help.
02:14And this is your day seven recap.
02:16So yesterday, day seven was an absolute bag of, I don't think I'd be covered from the nervous exhaustion of the snake the day before.
02:25Set off, tired from the outset.
02:28Got to a place called Juni, about 11k in.
02:31I've developed a bit of a hip problem.
02:34I stopped off at a place called Bethungra.
02:37Thinking it was going to be, well there was a petrol station there.
02:40Unfortunately, it was just a petrol pump and that was it.
02:42So no water, no food.
02:46I had to basically go rummaging through Rosie to try and find stuff.
02:50And as you may have seen, I had the worst lunch of all time.
02:54A rock hard, one day old sausage roll.
02:57So slightly reduced distance yesterday.
02:59I may even keep it reduced today as well.
03:03To not make a little problem balloon into a big one.
03:08Day eight on the highway to help.
03:10Always nice reaching a place called Hilltops.
03:14Just getting the deep fatigue.
03:19Excuse me mate.
03:22Do you know what way it is to Brisbane?
03:24Thanks.
03:28I think I've just found Lefty.
03:33He was trying to get across the road.
03:37And that was not going to work for our little friend.
03:40So I picked him up.
03:42I don't even know what day there is anyone on the highway to help.
03:47Not going too bad this morning.
03:50Yas Queen.
03:51Just dropped my fly net.
03:57I am going back for that.
04:00I'm on a lovely little side road.
04:02Just to the edge of the freeway.
04:05Not a car to be seen.
04:06I've just had to stealth past the kangaroo on the other side of the fence.
04:11You probably can't really see him.
04:14But he's kind of in those bushes.
04:16Just where that truck has just gone past then.
04:18Day ten on the highway to help.
04:21Running 2,000 kilometres from Melbourne to Brisbane.
04:24It's day eleven on the highway to help.
04:25On the highway to help though.
04:26So my legs have been suffering today.
04:28And I am now in the full blown fall into bits phase anyway.
04:33So yeah.
04:34My Achilles has finally come to the party.
04:38I thought it was at some point.
04:41I've also got a glute injury which means I've not slept in three days.
04:45So hello.
04:46With the bags under my eyes and everything like that.
04:49It's day eighteen on the highway to help.
04:51It's day fifteen on the highway to help.
04:56And here's your day thirteen recap.
04:59Sorry.
05:00My bad.
05:02Everything has been a bit of a whirlwind the last couple of days.
05:05Because as you may have seen, we got to Sydney.
05:09It's day fifteen on the highway to help.
05:13It's day sixteen on the highway to help.
05:16And this is your day fifteen recap.
05:18Just got to keep a little eye on the road because I'm on a narrow shoulder.
05:22What a day though.
05:23Absolutely what a day.
05:25First of all, starting off at Lake's entrance.
05:28Which is always a good thing because it's like a touristy place.
05:31Which means it's nice.
05:32And it was.
05:33And I got to go over a bridge and saw pelicans which was boss.
05:37It's day n-n-n-n-nineteen on the highway to help.
05:39It's day twenty-one on the highway to help.
05:41It's day twenty-one on the highway to help.
05:44Well, to be honest I wasn't actually lazy.
05:47I was absolutely cooked.
05:49I had brain fry.
05:51It's day twenty-three on the highway to help.
05:55Over a thousand miles done in three weeks.
05:58Which is nice.
05:59And here's your day twenty-one update.
06:00I am going to give you twenty-one and twenty-two separately.
06:03Because a lot of stuff happened.
06:05So two big days.
06:06Needs to make a lot of progress.
06:07Needs to get to a place called Coffs Harbour.
06:10On day twenty-one.
06:11Home of the big banana.
06:13Day twenty-four on the highway to help.
06:16It's day twenty-five on the highway to help.
06:20Whatever it is what it is.
06:22Highway to help.
06:23Over a thousand miles in.
06:24Only about two hundred and three hundred kilometres or something left.
06:27So here we go.
06:29Rock on.
06:31It's day twenty-seven on the highway to help.
06:34And this is your belated day twenty-five update.
06:37I was going to give it to you yesterday.
06:38But I was tired.
06:39And I was in a bad mood.
06:40Day twenty-five was so good.
06:42It deserved a smile.
06:44So why was it so good?
06:45Well first of all.
06:46I was in Woodburn.
06:47Which is my last small town of the trip.
06:49And it meant I was running away from there.
06:51Through some lovely country roads.
06:53All on myself.
06:54And I realised this is probably the last time.
06:56I'd be doing that.
06:58So you know.
07:00It's day twenty-eight on the highway to help.
07:02And this is your day twenty-six update.
07:04The worst day.
07:05The sad day.
07:06The tragedy.
07:07Yeah.
07:08The worst day of all time.
07:09Supposedly.
07:10Why?
07:11Because.
07:12I woke up that morning in Biden Bay.
07:13Didn't I?
07:14And that was like the greatest day of all time.
07:15Or top five.
07:16Or something like that.
07:17Anyway.
07:18So it was never going to be as good.
07:19It was kind of like a middle child thing.
07:21When.
07:22It happened.
07:23Put one of my shoes down.
07:24I was like.
07:25Where's the other one of them?
07:26No.
07:27Not there.
07:28Turned the room upside down.
07:30Like looking in places.
07:31Like looking in pockets.
07:32That was too small to have a shoe in.
07:33But I was just looking there.
07:34Whatever.
07:35And it could have been absolutely anywhere.
07:37I've got a mate.
07:38Byron.
07:39Who works in the local hospital.
07:40Even drove 10k along that road.
07:42Last night.
07:43Trying to see it.
07:44But you know.
07:45It's probably a lost cause.
07:46I know I shouldn't go back for it.
07:48It's not as even as if I need the shoe anymore.
07:50Because we're pretty much done.
07:52But I just feel.
07:53It feels like a defeat.
07:56It's day.
07:57I don't know what day is.
07:59I don't know how to number it.
08:00But we're still on the highway to help.
08:02We're always on the highway to help.
08:03Until we've helped.
08:04And here is the first part of your day 28 update.
08:08Now.
08:09This is a funny one.
08:10Because I had to run more k's.
08:12Than I needed to.
08:13To get to where I needed to be.
08:15Because.
08:16I wanted to get to a certain level of town.
08:18I finished.
08:19So what I did.
08:20Was I ran 6k to park run.
08:22I did park run.
08:23And then I ran back.
08:24It wasn't just a normal park run.
08:26I ran park run fast.
08:28I was a naughty boy.
08:30It's day.
08:32Well.
08:33The last.
08:34Australian day.
08:35At the highway to help.
08:36But we've done a 1972.
08:38Kilometres.
08:39And.
08:40That wasn't good enough.
08:41Because.
08:4218th.
08:43It was formed in 1973.
08:44Which went through nine laps.
08:46This stadium.
08:47The good thing about that.
08:48Was.
08:49There were a lot of people there.
08:50Just going.
08:51What's that Nuttall doing.
08:52And I was like.
08:53He's going from Melbourne to Brisbane.
08:54And they were like.
08:55That's pretty far.
08:56And we were like.
08:57Yeah.
08:58So then they got into it.
08:59And the whooping and the hollering.
09:00Got progressively louder.
09:01And on the last lap.
09:02Something quite special happened.
09:04And.
09:05You'll be able to see that in the video.
09:06If you haven't already.
09:07You know.
09:08Spoiler alerts aren't really needed these days.
09:10But anyway.
09:11We got there.
09:121973 kilometres.
09:13And then we went to.
09:14The pub.
09:15Woo.
09:24How are you feeling now.
09:25That you've.
09:26Crossed the finish line.
09:27Pretty emotional man.
09:28I was a little bit worried.
09:29That.
09:30It would just be a thing.
09:31At the end.
09:32You know.
09:33As in like.
09:34Oh well.
09:35We're done.
09:36What do we do.
09:37Let's go to the show.
09:38It's not just from me.
09:39But from.
09:40People who've like.
09:41Followed along.
09:42And most importantly.
09:43The charities.
09:44And ACDC themselves.
09:45Just can't speak more highly of.
09:47I think it was.
09:48The emotional end.
09:49It needed to be.
09:50It needed to be.
