RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk wraps up nationally, but will return in Canberra

Dogwalkers around the country have today taken part in the RSPCA's final ever million paws walk. Over the past 30 years, the event has raised 17-million-dollars for the animal rescue charity. But rising costs means the decision was made to end the event for good, except in Canberra, where the local shelter intends to run its own annual walk.

00:00They're raising about $50,000 today and we hear that money is going to go towards the

00:07250 puppies that they've received just this financial year.

00:12There's been an abundance, an overload of cats, dogs and we hear roosters given to the

00:18shelter in Canberra.

00:20In Canberra the event will actually last a little bit longer.

00:23The organisers say it's so popular here and the event is viable despite increasing overheads.

00:29It is bittersweet.

00:31In the ACT we'll continue with the event in some way or form but this will be the last

00:37National Million Paws Walk ever.

00:39What we are hearing is that there is an appetite for an event like this in the ACT and organisers

00:44are planning to keep the event going in some way.
