00:01Previously on Blue Water Safari, storm clouds were building.
00:07It's about 1am in the morning and that storm was much worse than I expected.
00:11The boat's rolling around, the wind's hailing.
00:15It's actually a really dangerous situation.
00:18When the wind picked up, we decided that we had to set a second anchor
00:21because we need to take every precaution out here to make sure nothing bad happens
00:24because we are so isolated, we've got no one coming to help us.
00:29Will this storm chase Barefoot and its crew out of the Coral Sea?
00:39G'day, I'm Dean Cropp and with a crew of young ocean explorers,
00:44we are going on an epic adventure
00:47to visit some of the most pristine and remote parts of the Coral Sea.
00:52Hi, I'm Loz, I'm a firefighter.
00:55G'day, I'm Tyler.
00:57My role on the boat is to take care of the crew if anything should happen to Dean.
01:00Hey, I'm Div.
01:01I'm bang into my high landing, my climbing, adventures of any sort.
01:05I just swim with shark uggs.
01:06My name's Annika, otherwise known as Nunu.
01:08Hi, my name's Melissa.
01:10I'm a little freaked out, don't know what to expect.
01:13My name's Luis and I'm a musician from Brazil.
01:16There's seven of us crammed into my trusty catamaran Barefoot.
01:21We're following in the footsteps of my filmmaker father, Ben Cropp.
01:26Dad was a nature adventure filmmaker back in the 70s.
01:30He actually started out as a shark hunter.
01:32Then he became a protector of sharks.
01:35And I feel the same way.
01:38We'll see if things have changed,
01:41and we'll make discoveries of our own.
01:44It's really wearing me out.
01:46As we sail across an ocean frontier to somewhere so isolated,
01:51no-one ever goes there.
01:53And it's one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
01:58Wherever the winds and currents take us,
02:01that storm was much worse than I expected.
02:05We'll find out just a little bit about ourselves.
02:08I'm not okay with this.
02:10And the wonderful world we live in.
02:14Come with us on an extraordinary coral sea adventure.
02:23It's day 18 of our Blue Water Safari.
02:40And unfortunately, we're heading back towards the Australian mainland.
02:44I can't believe we're leaving Elizabeth Reef already.
02:54I love this place.
02:56It's so cool, and I never give it the time I should.
03:00I always spend most of my time at Middleton.
03:02We love that place.
03:03But the wind and the waves are telling us we've got to go.
03:07And this is the time to do it.
03:09We can't hang here any longer.
03:11We have been lucky so far.
03:15Mostly blue skies and calm seas.
03:18But things have changed.
03:25So the captain says that we're about to enter into probably our roughest night on the boat.
03:32I've never been on a boat before, so I'm a little bit worried about it.
03:36And pretty much anything that can fall overboard will fall overboard.
03:43Anything that can topple over will topple over inside as well.
03:48So basically we're just battening down the hatches and getting ready for the storm.
03:55I just hope the captain doesn't fall overboard.
03:57We're really screwed in that case.
03:59And while the water is still blue, the sky now is not.
04:04The storm we endured at Elizabeth Reef in the Coral Sea is just the start of some very bad and unseasonal weather.
04:12And that storm, it seems to be chasing us.
04:24Okay, start.
04:25Come off order.
04:26Start turning that way slowly.
04:30Slowly.
04:32Okay, hold that course.
04:34Start letting it down, Tyler.
04:35Start letting it down, Tyler.
04:39Let it down.
04:58Get back on course.
05:01At least no one ended up overboard.
05:04This is just the start of what could be a very long night.
05:14So it's 2.04 in the morning.
05:17Nice, bright, early morning for us all.
05:20And we just broke, or I think a rope snapped in our mainsail.
05:24Kind of jerked us around.
05:26We're running downwind, which is never a great setup for the boat.
05:32It's a little difficult.
05:34The wind's kind of sliding from side to side.
05:37And I could hear that the mainsail was kind of getting shifted one side to the other side.
05:42And just the linkage in the main sheet broke up on the boom.
05:52But it kind of went around and whacked the standing ring.
05:55Makes a really horrible noise.
05:56And that's what woke me up.
05:57Scared the crap out of me.
05:59I was on night shift and Lauren was on the helm so I was like resting on the ground and Dean was on the couch.
06:09And we just heard a really loud bang and both Dean and I just like sprung up and went outside to see what would happen.
06:14We thought we'd hit a container because that's what it sounded like.
06:17It was just like a boom.
06:18We're going good again.
06:21We're throwing the screecher back up.
06:23We're sailing again.
06:25It's scary when something goes bang.
06:27We just need the engine so we don't get pooped.
06:30The waves don't come up the back of the boat until we get to this waypoint here.
06:37It's been a rough night.
06:39This heavy swell has really knocked us around.
06:41We've never had all the beer and wine fall out of the wine rack before.
07:02We really lent over a couple of times there.
07:05Felt it.
07:06I mean for the pressure cooker to fall off, I've never seen that before.
07:17I've decided that the safest course of action is to head back towards the Australian coast.
07:23Lord Howe Island first and then travel south down the mainland to the marine reserve of Jarvis Bay.
07:30There are a couple of very special places to go exploring there.
07:39My father spent a lot of time in Jarvis Bay in the 1960s and 70s.
07:45And I think my crew will be amazed by what we'll be able to find so close to a major city like Sydney.
07:51But we need to get there first and the consequences of rough seas and seasickness drains you of every ounce of energy.
08:09We have a passenger on the boat.
08:11We are miles from land and yet a land bird turns up out of nowhere.
08:17I think he wants to be our friend because he's certainly in no rush to leave this free ride.
08:28I'm pretty sure he's a welcome swallow.
08:31This little guy was likely blown off Lord Howe Island and barefoot was the only piece of dry ground he could land on.
08:37Very tired from his big adventure, he's gone to Nunu for warmth.
08:45I feel like Cinderella.
08:47It's Sleeping Beauty.
08:51I think he just likes my head because my hair is like a nest.
08:54I was in my room, he looks like scary, his house, so we're gonna let him go.
09:07Actually, I think he's staying till we get a little closer to dry ground.
09:15You can go far.
09:16The crew in the main have left their land loving passions at home.
09:23All except Divya.
09:25She is going crazy, not being able to climb anything.
09:29She just loves her high lining and rock climbing so much.
09:32So, as a special treat, just for her, we are taking a short detour past an incredible land formation.
09:43It used to be, until recently, a mecca for rock climbers.
09:50It's called Ball's Pyramid.
09:52We can't go and visit because it's now protected, but we can still get a pretty good look at it from barefoot.
10:01That's so exciting to see Ball's Pyramid.
10:05I was particularly excited because it's actually a bit of a legendary climbing spot, which you can no longer climb, unfortunately.
10:13They found a stick insect there that they thought to be extinct for something like seven years.
10:18And as soon as they found it there, they were like, nope, we've got to close this down, no more climbing.
10:27It's just a giant sea rock, and it's all made of, like, this volcanic rock that used to be this giant ring,
10:33and then slowly it's sort of fallen away, and it's just this one bit left, like this shard-like piece.
10:41It's actually the tallest volcanic stack in the world.
10:45Just imagine when it was created.
10:48I'm not sure Divya will ever get to climb it.
11:04Maybe one day.
11:06But at least she's seen it.
11:07Just to sort of, like, be able to see it and look at it from a distance and sort of, like, plan where you'd go up, it's truly a remarkable thing.
11:16Yesterday was so crazy with the waves and the wind and everything that was going on.
11:28None of us slept very much, and this little guy jumped onto our boat.
11:33Poor little thing, probably had no idea what was happening.
11:36But it was so crazy out there, he might not even have seen us.
11:39He could have just been coasting through the air.
11:41Yeah.
11:46We have made it to Lord Howe Island, 300 nautical miles off the east coast of Australia.
11:55Lord Howe Island, Lord Howe Island.
11:58Finney Constable Roberts.
11:59This is Barefoot, Barefoot.
12:01Copy that, go ahead, Barefoot.
12:03Yeah, g'day, guys.
12:04It's Barefoot here.
12:05We're just coming in through the passage, in through Sugarloaf Passage.
12:10And we'll anchor in the lee of Ned's Beach.
12:15And while it would be nice to have a night or two here in the pub at Lord Howe, the weather is right on our tail.
12:22And I don't want to get stuck here for days.
12:24So, I'm going to push straight on to Jarvis Bay.
12:29But before we leave, I need to drop some footage off.
12:34Some friends on Lord Howe, Brian and Peter Busteed, have kindly agreed to take the package and send it on.
12:41And to save time, we have a very modern delivery method that's not without some risk.
12:48And I've never tried to lift anything with our camera drone.
12:53And if I mess it up, well, both the drone and all our hard work goes for a bloody swim.
13:08The pink stick is in the air.
13:12Yeah, I got him.
13:14If it doesn't work, it wasn't my idea.
13:16If it does, then it was.
13:17And you're welcome, Pete.
13:26He's got it.
13:27He's doing something else, though.
13:29I can't see what he's doing.
13:31I think he's got the stick.
13:34We've got a mysterious package coming our way.
13:37Making me a bit nervous if I will make it back to the boat.
13:43It's a new cat!
13:45I want some chocolate!
13:49I'll break your bones!
13:51This is solid gold.
13:53I just want to express the thankful we are for the chocolate.
13:54We've completely run out on barefoot.
13:55This is my crew thanking you extremely huge amounts for the chocolate.
13:57Thank you!
13:58Woo!
13:59Woo!
14:00Woo!
14:01Woo!
14:02Woo!
14:03Woo!
14:04Woo!
14:05Woo!
14:07Woo!
14:08Woo!
14:09Woo!
14:10Woo!
14:11Woo!
14:12Woo!
14:13Woo!
14:14Woo!
14:15Woo!
14:16Woo!
14:17Woo!
14:18Woo!
14:19Woo!
14:20Woo!
14:21Woo!
14:22Woo!
14:23Woo!
14:25Woo!
14:30With this nor'easter coming, there is nowhere for us to hide here at Lord Howe.
14:34We can't go in the lagoon.
14:35So we're going to use this wind to take us all the way to Jarvis Bay.
14:40This rough weather has given everyone another bout of seasickness.
14:58Now, if you do get seasick, coffee is bad.
15:02If you're too hot, you're going to get seasick.
15:05So it's better to shed some layers, get a bit cooler.
15:09Stress is a big one. That's something that makes me seasick.
15:12If I'm upside down in the engine room and stressed and diesel and all this sort of stuff,
15:16yeah, I can go down if I'm trying to concentrate on something and I'm stressed.
15:21There are a few ways to get over seasickness.
15:24I do have some neat tricks.
15:26I actually reckon the best one, if we can't stop the boat, is just dance.
15:31Dance it off.
15:33Get out there and jump around and get the blood flowing
15:36and, you know, dance off that seasickness.
15:38Do something to take your mind off it.
15:40If you're just laying there going,
15:41please, will the boat stop moving?
15:42It will not stop moving.
15:44That doesn't work.
15:46Your brain just is concentrating on being sick.
15:48You get up there and dance and it just takes your mind off it.
15:52A little bit of your wind.
15:55Travelling closer to the coast does enable us to encounter different sea life than what's
15:59out on the reef or the deep ocean.
16:01than what's out on the reef or the deep ocean.
16:09I've spotted a whole heap of seabirds, gulls and terns,
16:13all feverishly darting into the water.
16:17A clear sign there is something interesting up ahead.
16:23And now these dolphins have turned up,
16:25and they seem to be leading us over to all this action.
16:31It's a bait ball!
16:34This is amazing!
16:46This is a dolphin's equivalent to a smorgasbord.
16:51Now, this is a bit of an underwater cinematographer's holy grail.
16:54Bait balls are so cool!
16:56And this is the best welcome back to the mainland
16:59we could ever have.
17:05Bait ball of yellow-tailed yakka,
17:07and they're just swirling and moving like this one giant organism.
17:12The seals and the dolphins,
17:13what they've done is they've herded this big school of fish
17:16into a really tight ball.
17:18They've herded them in, and the fish are trying to crowd in
17:21and trying to be in the middle of the bait ball
17:23where they're not in danger of being eaten.
17:29But the coolest thing is there's this seal.
17:32There's this one seal.
17:33He's diving in through the middle of them, grabbing his lunch,
17:36and coming out through the middle of the bait ball,
17:38they're kind of looking back at me, giving me a wink,
17:40and going, yeah, I just had lunch.
17:42What are you going to do about it?
17:54You know, I was really reticent about coming back to the mainland.
17:56I don't like going backwards.
17:58You know, I wanted to stay out there in the wild, remote coral sea.
18:03But to come back and see a bait ball?
18:06Totally worth it.
18:14Wow.
18:15What an experience that was.
18:18An aquatic food web in full swing.
18:21Now I can tick that off my bucket list.
18:25And thankfully, no big sharks to worry about.
18:29Now onwards to Jarvis Bay.
18:31It should only take us a day or two if everything goes smoothly.
18:47As you spend more time on board,
18:48you start to become as one with the boat,
18:51understanding its movements and sounds.
18:54So if a noise is unfamiliar,
18:56we instantly all go into alert mode.
19:01All is going well.
19:02We have clear skies.
19:04It's all beautiful.
19:05And then suddenly we hear a noise.
19:11What was that?
19:13Oh, the head source popped off the track.
19:15We just had a gust of wind.
19:19And I was trimming this sail in.
19:23And the traveller let go.
19:26Looks like it's split the plastic on the ends of this traveller.
19:29So I'm going to have to set this up to not travel back and forth so we can still use it.
19:36Just got to find solutions for all these issues and then we'll be alright.
19:41We'll motor for the next bit while I try and fix this.
19:44What was that?
19:47Oh no.
19:48What's wrong now?
19:50We've got a pump down here that's not really working properly.
19:52I'm trying to fix that.
19:54But our biggest issue is one of our engines is overheating a bit while we're sailing,
19:59if we're running it while we're sailing.
20:01Could be a leak in the pump.
20:02I don't know.
20:03We've got to work it out otherwise this should send us back to land and that'll really mess with our plans.
20:10Hopefully we can still motor on one engine while we fix the other one.
20:16Okay, so right now I'm using my right hand to undo the bolts on the impeller.
20:22One moment.
20:26I don't know a lot about engines but I know that the problems we're facing are too much for me to want to be responsible for.
20:34We received information that the engine had overheated meant it had run out of water.
20:38So we filled up the water and then started taking it apart.
20:41The impeller was still good, so it was still spinning.
20:44The rubber impeller inside the water pump was still good.
20:46So that leads us to diagnose further.
20:50I hope that someone here knows what's going on because the sounds that we're hearing are a little bit freaky.
20:55And when we're out in the middle of the ocean then we need to be self-sufficient.
20:59Oh look I'm on!
21:01We replaced the shaft o-ring.
21:06What's it called?
21:08Shaft seal.
21:09We replaced the shaft seal.
21:11And then our seal.
21:13And then without gloves he got a spacer and grinded it down with a grinding wheel so that it would fit the new seal that we had.
21:20That's all inside there.
21:21All we've got to do now is whack it back on and test it.
21:25I don't even know if they know what they're doing.
21:28Like, seriously.
21:30So we've literally had to MacGyver this piece together from all of these different parts on the boat.
21:34And I think it's going to be the first of many.
21:40We are slowly but surely getting to the bottom of the problem.
21:45So we're going to start the engine now and it absolutely must work.
21:53Or I don't know what we're going to do.
21:55Ready D?
21:57Ready D?
21:59Yeah it's pumping.
22:01Just stop slipping into gear.
22:07Crazy.
22:08Well that was an eventful 24 hours.
22:14But we've repaired the head sail track and fixed the engine.
22:19Now fingers crossed nothing else goes wrong.
22:22For a while at least.
22:26We've had a fair breeze and we've made good time sailing down the east coast of Australia.
22:32We've continued south past Sydney.
22:35And we've finally arrived.
22:38At a very special place just outside beautiful Jarvis Bay.
22:45It's called Drum and Sticks Rocks.
22:47And we've got this big, big rock here.
22:49It's called the drum.
22:50We've got these smaller ones, they're the sticks.
22:52And the coolest thing about this place is it is chock-a-block full of seals.
22:59First, you've got to look them in the eye.
23:01Communication's all about eye contact.
23:02Second, a deep, loud...
23:06Oh my lord!
23:09That's...
23:11Offensive to the nose.
23:14There's quite a strong breeze coming through and it's wafting the beautiful stench of the seals straight into our faces.
23:22They really stink.
23:24Like, really bad.
23:27Before you see them you can smell them.
23:30There are seals everywhere and they are so much fun to watch and play with.
23:35But the really cool thing here is if you jump in the water they'll come up to you.
23:38Once you jump in, they'll come, they'll be very interested in you.
23:45These guys are pretty used to having people swim with them.
23:48So they'll come in around you, they'll cruise up near you.
23:51The key is, don't chase them.
23:53Because they'll actually draw you out into deeper, deeper, deeper water and then leave you there and disappear and come back.
23:59They're really cheeky like that.
24:01So try not to chase them and just hang quietly, come up near them.
24:05And then if they dive under you and play around, you play around.
24:08If you go down and spin and spiral and do cool things, they'll get excited by what you're doing and they'll emulate and do the same thing.
24:14And they like blowing bubbles and you blow bubbles and you do anything to play with them and they'll get really interested in you.
24:19But if they start getting really close and they start snapping their mouth at you, that's a little, that's a little threat.
24:25Hey, I'm not happy with you here.
24:28Stay back a bit further.
24:29So if they're snapping their mouth, just hang back a little and relax and then they'll come in and play with you again.
24:35Other than that, they're super friendly, really, really cute to play with.
24:49Hi, I'm a rock with a lonely seal.
24:53No, no, you're really behind the eight ball today.
24:56I'm so ready, it's not funny.
25:12It's stuff that you dream about as a little child that you could just be one with the fishes.
25:17And it's a reality right now.
25:22The seals, they're just like playing around and swimming around us and we'll like duck dive in and do some flips and do some like roly polies and they're just like roly-poly around us.
25:33Kind of like they're roly-poly around each other.
25:38There's just this feeling of it's playtime.
25:41They would spin and blow bubbles at the same time.
25:44So there's a vortex left behind them.
25:46It's so incredible.
25:48So staring up all these vortexes in front of me, the entire crew and all these light shafts coming through.
25:53It's just a beautiful, beautiful morning.
25:55We try to keep 10 metres from the seals, but when they swim up to you, what can you do?
26:04I like blowing bubbles in their faces.
26:07They seem to react well to that.
26:11But yeah, it's just magnificent down there.
26:15It's so crazy.
26:20Insane.
26:21I never knew I would be swimming that close to a seal.
26:24That was so incredible.
26:27So incredible.
26:28The Australian fur seals used to be hunted for their fur.
26:35Thankfully, now they are protected.
26:39So we are lucky to be able to get to know them.
26:43And Nunu, well, she couldn't resist the opportunity to see what they make of her mermaid tail.
26:48They were freaking out.
26:56They were just like, what are you?
27:00I think initially they were probably very confused and maybe a little bit afraid, but then they got used to me and then they wouldn't leave me alone.
27:06Especially this one who just followed us all the way back to the boat and just kept going around yet checking me out.
27:12Like, what are you?
27:15It was so cute.
27:16It was like a little puppy following around his mama.
27:20It was, yeah, it was the definite, like, are you family or are you a new species I haven't seen before?
27:28I just made my childhood dreams come true.
27:32I'm a mermaid.
27:36Hands up.
27:37Who's the seal?
27:40Bus are yours.
27:41I love you so much.
27:42I love you so much.
27:43I love you.
27:44I want to say good night.
27:46Bye.
27:48To you and your...
27:50Oh!
27:51Oh!
27:53Oh!
27:54Oh!
27:56Oh!
27:57We've moved into the calm and safe anchorage of Jarvis Bay.
28:03All right, Tyler, let's get the sails down.
28:07And...
28:09Loes, we've got a mooring. Let's grab this mooring ahead.
28:22Here for the night.
28:23Yahoo!
28:24Yahoo!
28:27It's day 21, and the sunshine has turned to rain this morning.
28:36It's a chance for all of us to have a breather from our adventures.
28:41Nunu, however, is feeling a little melancholy.
28:45This anchorage is not too far from where she used to live
28:48on the south coast of New South Wales.
28:51Unfortunately, she lost her home and farm there
28:54in the recent bushfires.
28:56Early this year, I lost my house and the fires.
29:02It's been a pretty rough year.
29:04That was the beginning of it.
29:06That was followed by a pretty devastating heartbreak,
29:09which was also followed by some health issues,
29:12which was pretty much related to mental health.
29:14Dean has properly, like, taken me under his wing since last year,
29:18and I've been working for him pretty much full-time.
29:20And, um, especially after the fires, he really took me in
29:24and gave me somewhere to be, which was really important for me
29:27because I had nowhere else to be.
29:29I'm just really excited to be here.
29:31I've been looking forward to this for so long.
29:32It feels like an absolute blessing.
29:34It feels like a real reward for a really challenging year.
29:39So, really happy to be here.
29:42Barefoot is her home now.
29:45And as for the weather, well,
29:47it looks like it's just some passing showers.
29:49Double rainbow!
29:51It's actually a double rainbow!
29:54Come on!
30:00With the weather not perfect
30:02and the crew just chilling out today on board,
30:05it's an opportunity for some me time.
30:08I'm desperately trying to learn how to foil board.
30:12I'll come back and forth behind the boat,
30:15but if I run out of energy or there's not enough wind
30:17or something happens, I'll be laying on the board paddling.
30:20So, if you see me paddling, you send someone to come get me.
30:23Yep.
30:24Awesome, thank you.
30:25If you're not enjoying yourself.
30:30I'm just learning.
30:31This will only be my second go at it.
30:33So, I kind of don't want it too windy
30:35because it'll just be too crazy.
30:37But it's so addictive.
30:39Once I get up and going, it's just crazy addictive.
30:41It's so much fun.
30:44It's called wing foiling
30:46and I've been foil boarding for a little while,
30:49but I really wanted more freedom
30:51than just paddling or surfing or towing behind a boat.
30:55And so, this wing that I hold, it's kind of like a kite.
30:58A little bit like windsurfing, but kite boarding, but handheld.
31:03It's a really odd mixture of the three or four different things.
31:07But it's crazy addictive.
31:12I'm sure I can rely on my crew if I get into trouble.
31:17So, Lauren.
31:18Yes.
31:19Where's the captain?
31:20The captain is way, way out there.
31:24Poor guy's been paddling back for a while
31:26while everyone sorts out their stuff to go rescue him.
31:29We're all alone.
31:31There's no one here beside me.
31:35But you gotta have friends.
31:38Hey!
31:48I did say come get me.
31:50As soon as I started paddling back.
31:52Oh, yeah.
31:53Poor guy.
31:54He's been paddling for ages.
31:55How are you?
31:56Do you think he's pissed?
31:57Pissed?
31:58Nah.
31:59He doesn't get pissed real easy.
32:00I know, because I test it.
32:01He won't be angry.
32:02He'll just be disappointed.
32:03Disappointing you.
32:04My boat children.
32:05I was out there all alone.
32:06No, that's angry.
32:07You're gonna be disappointed.
32:08Yeah, disappointed's worse, I reckon.
32:09For sure.
32:10Disappointed in you.
32:11Disappointed in you.
32:12I don't know because I tested.
32:16He won't be angry, he'll just be disappointed.
32:19Disappointed in you, my boat children.
32:23I was out there all alone!
32:25No, that's angry.
32:27You're going to be disappointed.
32:29Yeah, disappointed's worse, I reckon.
32:31For sure.
32:32Disappointed in you.
32:38I think Tyler is aware that I'm a little unhappy,
32:41that no-one came out to pick me up sooner.
32:44So, he said he's going to make me his special cocktail
32:47to make up for it.
32:49First, all the ice the boat has.
32:52El Nengo.
32:56One.
32:58Not too much.
32:59And then...
33:01Just... just... just... just...
33:05Splash!
33:11I guess that'll do the trick.
33:18And Nunu certainly agrees.
33:23It's day 22.
33:33I'm personally enjoying this downtime,
33:35while we wait for the weather to clear,
33:37but along with keeping the boat ship-shape,
33:40I also feel responsible for the boredom levels on the boat.
33:44And it sometimes feels like a full-time job,
33:47just to keep everybody entertained.
33:51Luckily, Lauren has brought her boxing gear,
33:54so hopefully, that'll wear him out for a while.
33:58I'm bored, so I gotta get moving.
34:01Bored on a boat, and I'm on a boat, bored.
34:04Bored on a boat, and I'm on a boat, bored.
34:06Bored on a boat, and I'm on a boat, bored.
34:08Bored on a boat, and I'm on a boat, bored.
34:09Bored on a boat, and I'm on a boat, jab!
34:11Board and a boat and a monobo cross!
34:13I thought I was practising.
34:18Cardio is not my forte, but I got guns!
34:29The police have turned up on the beach and are signalling to us.
34:34Actually, that's not just a policeman, that's a federal police uniform.
34:38I'd better go and check out what he wants.
34:42It looks really serious.
34:44I wish I could hear what they were saying.
34:46But his arm movements are really, like, erratic.
34:52I don't want to go home.
34:53Not me either.
34:55We're never home to go home to.
34:57It's home.
34:59Apparently, there's a police operation happening in the area.
35:03It's serious and the bay is off limits to everyone.
35:08OK, so they've closed the national park.
35:11No boats in the national park.
35:13They've now closed off this whole area, all the way from Huskersen all the way across here.
35:17No one's allowed on shore.
35:18No one's allowed to interact at all.
35:20But he actually knew who we were.
35:21Oh, really?
35:22Yeah.
35:23Did his research.
35:24They looked us up and they found us on YouTube and stuff like that.
35:28They looked up barefoot and he's like, what's your Instagram?
35:31Oh, my God.
35:32I heard that.
35:33I heard that.
35:34What's your Instagram?
35:35I heard that.
35:36All right.
35:37I'll start the engines.
35:39Lauren, let the mooring go and we'll go around the corner.
35:41So, we got evicted.
35:43We were told to leave and we are leaving.
35:47We're heading back to Point Perpendicular now and there's some caves that we get to go exploring.
35:52So, you know, one door closes and more doors open.
35:56Exciting.
36:03These caves are really quite special.
36:06They're ocean cliff caves.
36:08They're not easy to get into, but once you do, it's totally worth it.
36:15It's so beautiful.
36:17It's the stuff of dreams.
36:19It's amazing how different the landscape changes when you, like, move down the coast or up the coast.
36:28If the seas are rough, they can get a little gnarly.
36:33It's a little more rolly out here than I expected.
36:36But there's a few parts along here that are protected, mainly because of these cliffs.
36:42They're so huge.
36:43This is Point Perpendicular and these are some of the tallest cliffs in New South Wales, ocean cliffs.
36:48Some places over 100 metres high.
36:51Really amazing uplifted sandstone.
36:53And you can see all the layers, all the different sediment layers in there.
36:57Really amazing place.
36:59And parts of it are a national park, which is cool because you get lots of dolphins and seals and all this exciting fish life hanging around.
37:07And that's why I want to go explore these caves.
37:10The caves are like a hideaway for fish and animals and bait fish hide in there in the shadows.
37:17And it's a really cool place to get in there and explore.
37:20But with waves like that, personally, I don't think I'm going to be able to get in there.
37:27I'm going to have to look after the boat.
37:30But I'll get my crew in a good position to go explore.
37:33And that'll make me happy.
37:34So these are the caves we're going to be exploring today.
37:37It's a little treacherous out here, as you might see behind me.
37:41There's a bit of swell going on.
37:43The caves seem to look okay.
37:45And we know that they're going to be beautiful.
37:47So it's definitely worth giving a try.
37:49Try and swim through them.
37:52The ladies are crazy.
37:54They're going to go swimming through a massive hole in the wall.
37:57I'm not going to go in because I've got a cut on my leg.
37:59I'm going to let that heal.
38:01And they might need some saving because it's a little bit rough out here.
38:04Oh, yeah.
38:06We'll need saving.
38:07From you.
38:09Well, maybe.
38:10Look at them.
38:12It's crazy.
38:13The ladies are crazy.
38:15Oh, my God!
38:20Nunu is going to lead this adventure.
38:22She's the strongest freediver aboard,
38:25and I trust her to make the right calls
38:28and not put anyone in harm's way.
38:31We've got two.
38:32We've got this big cave here,
38:34and it's shallow up the back,
38:36but it's quite deep in the middle,
38:37and you can swim up there where it's overhead.
38:40That's a pretty cool experience, going in this big one.
38:42But the really awesome one is this one to the left.
38:45You can swim in there,
38:46and then you go around the corner,
38:48and you come out the other side.
38:49It's really, really cool.
38:50Probably be a bit calmer in there,
38:52but just take it slowly
38:54and see how people go,
38:56and if you think you can get through to the other side.
38:59Should I go through first and check?
39:01Yeah, go through first.
39:02It's easier to dive down a bit
39:05under the chop as you go through,
39:09rather than...
39:10If you just try and swim on the surface,
39:11it's a bit hard because it's a bit choppy,
39:13but if you dive down,
39:14you'll see the light through at the other side,
39:16and you can go through all the way to the other side.
39:19They're pretty cool.
39:20They're pretty cool caves.
39:21I'm a croft.
39:22You ready?
39:23Yeah!
39:24We're ready as I'll be.
39:25All right.
39:26Let's get you in there.
39:41Yeah, down for three.
39:43Three, two, one, go!
39:46One, two, one, go!
39:52Watching them in the water,
39:54I have my heart in my mouth.
39:56These are quite dangerous conditions,
39:58and I can't leave the boat.
40:00But the crew were determined to give it a go.
40:04There was just too much white water,
40:21too many waves coming through.
40:23I went into one of them and realised when I looked up
40:36that I couldn't surface because it was too choppy,
40:38so I had to come out again and was like,
40:40oh, that was a little bit of a mistake.
40:46Making sure that you're not too close to the rocks
40:48because that's where all the waves kind of...
40:51It all gets a bit turbulent.
40:52A little bit like a washing machine.
40:59How was that?
41:03A little dicey.
41:04Is that fucking awesome?
41:05A bit dicey.
41:07It got a little bit rough.
41:10Um, and there was a little bit of kind of white water
41:14floating around everywhere.
41:15It's a bit harder to see as well.
41:18Unfortunately, it was way too rough to swim
41:20all the way through.
41:22Um, I went in first and checked it out,
41:24and, yeah, it's bottlenecked at the exit,
41:28and it was just white water.
41:30And I figured, like, I could probably make it,
41:32but I wasn't going to take my crew through.
41:34Yeah, I wasn't sure for a second there.
41:37It was probably a little more sketchy than I expected.
41:40It was a real washing machine in there,
41:42and I don't think my crew got a really good chance
41:44to dive down and have a look around.
41:46So I think just up here there's another one.
41:49It's more of an arch,
41:50and it creates a protected bay in behind it,
41:53and then in there I think they'll be able
41:55to go explore underwater
41:57and find more fish and interesting stuff to check out.
42:00They're going to love it.
42:04They're going to love it.
42:14Yaaaaah!
42:16AHHHHHHHH!
42:18I don't know.
42:48These caves are really a risk-reward scenario, and although it's scary, you really have
42:57to push yourself to go as deep as you can right into the back of the cave.
43:04I've done it many times, and it never gets easier.
43:08But you just have to keep going, and you will be rewarded.
43:13It's like an underwater world, kind of like when you were younger watching The Little
43:31Mermaids.
43:32So the scenery is absolutely beautiful.
43:39Just an underwater paradise.
43:43What a beautiful cave.
43:50What a beautiful cave.
44:00A beautiful cave.
44:04Let's go.
44:34Well, that's adventure for you, so isn't it?
44:56Woo!
44:57Amazing.
44:58It would be amazing to spend more time exploring here on calm days.
45:02But I feel like Lara Croft.
45:04Badass, put my knife.
45:06Good job.
45:08It's incredible.
45:10It's a fucking amazing experience.
45:12It's scary at the same time.
45:14Like, it's so intense.
45:15I kept you safe.
45:16Like, wild nature.
45:17Let's go further, let's go further.
45:19Yeah, let's go further.
45:20You did, though, and it was okay, right?
45:22That's keeping me safe?
45:23It was fun.
45:25Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
45:28Whoa.
45:29Let's just take a moment, shall we?
45:30There's too many intense things happening all the time.
45:32Let's take a moment for ourselves now.
45:35You, me, and the sunset.
45:37Let's end this episode with this beautiful sunset.
45:41Until next time, on Blue Water Safari.
45:42Good morning, Tyler.
45:43Good morning!
45:44Do you know what we're doing today?
45:45We're swimming with bitey things.
45:58You've got to be kidding.
45:59No, no, I don't like it.
46:00You've got to be kidding, no, no, I don't like it.
46:03Dean is absolutely crazy to think that we can get through this dog leg.
46:07But, like, it's a place I've never been to before.
46:12How could you not want to know what's under that?
46:15Not being able to access the lagoon is a massive setback for us.
46:21Do you want to be a Barefoot crew member? This is what it takes.
46:25God damn it, I hate boobies, this sucks!
46:30There was a sea snake, he came for me.
46:36Not okay.
