00:23Today on Rides Down Under, Aussie Truckers.
00:26Don and Maria head to Frittesura Club to celebrate their Italian heritage.
00:31Glenn and the boys from MCG disassemble the crane from the top of the CFMEU Wellness Centre.
00:37We head to Eureka garages and sheds with a load from Selection Steel.
00:41The boys from the CFMEU give us an up-close tour of the East-West Big Bill.
00:47First up, Kev heads to Tokemoor to hook up the first AB Triple for TCB Trans
00:54for an urgent delivery straight up to Queensland.
01:05So today's plan is what I am led to believe is a first for the Melbourne Division of TCB.
01:12And that is we run an AB Triple from the New South Wales border at Tokemoor
01:18right through to the Gatton Pads in Queensland.
01:21That's the plan for today.
01:22At this stage we're in preparation, getting everything right, make sure all the gear's there and everything's right to go.
01:29It's not just preparation in this instance, it's preparation right across the board.
01:33There's nothing worse than getting the site or somewhere where you need to be and you open the toolbox
01:38or something's not quite right with the equipment that you're moving around and you haven't got enough gear to do the job.
01:44It's critical at every point in the loading process before you depart to make sure that you've got everything and everything works properly.
01:52The boys are just finishing off a few little minor details that need to be done.
01:57Once they're finished there, I'll just double check to make sure that I'm happy with everything and make sure it's right.
02:02We'll put the B Double combination together, which I will take out to Somerton.
02:07From that point there we will load that particular back trailer of the B Double with Clifton's Productions.
02:13And the other trailer, the third trailer, one of our other drivers, he will run that out there, we will load it,
02:20and at which point then we'll travel through to Tokemoor where he'll then uncouple from that one,
02:26which has the dolly attached to it, and then we'll hook the whole three trailers together there in Tokemoor.
02:43It's a privilege for me to be able to undertake this.
02:47It's the first time out of the Melbourne division that we've elected to run this type of combination,
02:54but in the past there's been restrictions on the Newell Highway.
02:58So we can't run this particular combination from here in Melbourne out to the New South Wales border at Tokemoor,
03:05so therefore we need other strategies, which is then we need a second truck then to take the third trailer
03:12and he then comes out to Tokemoor where it all gets put together,
03:16and then from that point forward right through to Gatton, it is full road train route now.
03:22And they've opened it up where you don't need to have the permit or be under a PBS or HML system.
03:42Trailer configuration is an important part.
04:06There's no point in trying to run this type of particular setup if you don't have the right equipment to start with,
04:13because there are the rules and regulations that you have to abide by as far as the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator is concerned,
04:20and a few other bits and pieces.
04:22So combination matching is an integral part of what you need to do.
04:27There's also length issues. There's weight issues.
04:30So you've got to make sure that you conform right across the board.
04:40It's a critical point to make sure that you have everything in place.
04:44Dot your I's, cross your T's, make sure that the equipment you want to use is right for the tasks that you want to undertake.
04:51And then it's just a build process from there to make sure everything flows evenly.
04:56There are those unexpected things that sometimes just happen that you don't foresee.
05:01You try to plan for everything, but it's not always the case.
05:04I believe Lisa's going to be part of what's going on today.
05:14Although she'll have her own load, we will catch up with her at some stage out there as well.
05:19I have to credit Donnie and TCB.
05:22We both understand how freight moves.
05:24And it's not always that we get that opportunity where we can travel,
05:28not only as a company team, but also as partners.
05:32It's one of those blessed things.
05:34And to Donnie's credit, and some of the other allocators that have been in the role of allocations,
05:39they've all done the same thing.
05:41Where the opportunity presents and they can do it and it works fine,
05:46then yeah, we sort of travel a bit together.
05:48But there are times where we don't travel together for weeks or more on end.
05:52It's just the way transport is.
05:54Coming up, Kev arrives at Tokemoor New South Wales at dusk to hook up the first ever AB triple from TCB Trans.
06:21From there, he's heading straight up north to Gilgandra.
06:31We have some great merchandise here.
06:33In fact, it's trucking good.
06:35See what I did there?
06:36Yeah, it's pretty smart.
06:38We have t-shirts, we have hoodies, we have bar mats, caps.
06:42Special trucks were built over the years.
06:44I noticed that you've also got the Italian themed one showcasing your heritage.
06:48How cool is that?
06:49I absolutely love it.
06:50Plus, like you said, every size possible and I like an oversized hoodie.
06:54And I was lucky enough for Don to actually give me one.
06:57Did I?
06:58Did I?
06:59Yes.
07:10So we give these tasks to Kev.
07:11It's our first AB triple for TCB.
07:13So he's more of an experienced driver and he's up for the task.
07:17So he wants to do it.
07:18Let's see how he goes.
07:19So AB triple is a certain length.
07:21So we have to go to Tokemoor to hook them all up,
07:24because at the moment we're not allowed to hook them up in Victoria.
07:27So we just cross over the border, hook up all the trailers there,
07:31and we head up north to Queensland.
07:33So Kevin will be taking his regular truck that he drives,
07:35which is Burning Love, and that's all raided to do this task.
07:40We've come out of Melbourne yesterday afternoon,
07:42so we've just pulled up here.
07:44And we'll go around, we'll do a few things that we need to do now,
07:47just double check everything, make sure it's all right, check tyres.
07:50Just do the general basic stuff before we make a move again.
07:53It is essentially three trailers, yes.
07:55It's a double combination hooked up with another trailer and a dolly.
08:00Break time just depends.
08:01Sometimes you might only go a couple of hours up the road
08:04and you just think, you know what, I need to get out for 15 minutes
08:06and just go and have a cold drink or, you know,
08:09just get out of the truck in essence.
08:12The target from here will be Gilgandra,
08:14at which point that's where I believe I'll be doing a changeover
08:17with one of our Brisbane drivers,
08:19and then he'll take it from there on forward into Brisbane.
08:24This is the longer combination that I've driven with Don.
08:28I've done other normal road trains,
08:30just the two trailers and a dolly,
08:32but this is a first for me as an AB Triple.
08:35And it's been an experience but it's also been quite delightful
08:39and it's quite surprising how it actually handles
08:42and it does handle very well.
08:44I've got a K200 with a 600 Cummins in it.
08:49It seems to be coping fairly well,
08:52but at the same token we're not overly heavy either,
08:55so we're really not pushing the truck to its limits.
08:58As time goes by and we'll check the performance
09:01and see how it goes and determine what we do with it from there,
09:04but at this stage it seems to be performing quite well.
09:09With any freight, most times the freight will settle in transit.
09:13You sort of get into that habit where, you know,
09:15a couple of times throughout your trip
09:17you'll just get out of the truck and, like I said,
09:19sometimes when you just get out of it
09:21you just do a general walk around
09:23and just check all your restraint,
09:25make sure nothing's moved, make sure nothing's come off the trailer,
09:28make sure there's nothing hanging out where it shouldn't be.
09:30Just do a general visual and just check over things.
09:37If you ask Don, it'll be Don will tell you
09:39that Lisa's making sure, right,
09:41she's giving me a little bit of a push along.
09:44So, yeah, she come out of Melbourne late yesterday afternoon
09:48and it was actually about Bunjur rest area
09:52out of Giraldry last night
09:53that she actually caught up with me there.
09:55So, yeah.
09:56And, you know, where we can we travel together,
09:59other times we can't
10:00and that's the way it is and we understand that.
10:06You've still got to maintain all your regulations
10:09and standards and your rest breaks
10:11regardless of what you're doing.
10:13So, you know, it was time last night,
10:15you know, at 3am in the morning
10:17that it's enough for the day
10:19and it's time to go to bed.
10:21So, you know, it works out that, you know,
10:23seven hours later or eight hours later,
10:25whichever it goes,
10:26just depends what breaks you have throughout the day
10:28and then you can move again from there.
10:32You do have to change your drive line.
10:34It's not like a standard road train
10:36or a B double or a single.
10:37You do have to change that drive line
10:40in order to make sure,
10:41although things twist in the middle,
10:43you've still got to make sure
10:44that when you're going around your corners,
10:46you're not going to be running over islands
10:48and hitting traffic lights
10:49and all that sort of thing.
10:50So, it's, yeah, it's a different thing.
10:53No, no, no, there's no cameras there,
10:55nothing down the side,
10:56nothing to give you a visual inside the cab.
10:59It's all done by your own eye out mirrors
11:02and, you know, just keeping a general eye
11:05on where you're tracking.
11:07Again, other things, you know, I mean,
11:10yes, it's long.
11:11As an AB triple combination,
11:14you're always on the look regardless
11:16of whether it's an AB triple
11:17or it's a single or a B double.
11:19You're always looking out for what's in front of you,
11:22what's behind you,
11:23what's trying to come beside you to overtake.
11:26Sometimes you'll get into a position, you know,
11:28where you need to actually use a little bit more
11:31of the road to make a turn.
11:32You've got to make sure that no one's coming up
11:34on your blind side there at the left side
11:36and wants to try and, you know, get around you.
11:39So, there's lots of different things
11:40you've always got to look out for.
11:42We've come out of West Walong this morning.
11:45We've just arrived here at Gilgandra.
11:47Let me tell you, it's been fairly warm all the way out
11:50and you notice that as soon as you get out,
11:52it's nearly 40 degrees here in Gilgandra.
11:54At this point now, that's pretty much me for the day
11:57and for the next 24 hours.
11:59Lisa's off doing her changeover with the Brisbane driver
12:02and she'll be on hers as well.
12:05So, from that point, everything's travelled quite well.
12:07I'm happy with the way everything's going,
12:09the truck's going fine.
12:10So, we just now wait and see for the next leg of the journey
12:13and find out what goes on from there.
12:15Next up, Don and Maria head to Fertesura Club
12:31to celebrate their Italian heritage.

13:34When you purchase a machine from Hare and Forbes Machinery House,
13:38it's not just a sale, it's a partnership.
13:41So, Jess, what are we doing here today?
13:53We're here for the festival for the Republicans of the Italian community,
13:58so we're just celebrating at the Fred Pizzura Club in Brayside.
14:02Just putting together the community, so we've got fruit cards,
14:05put a few knick-knacky things inside, little bits and pieces of earrings,
14:09musical instruments as well, traditional ones,
14:12and then why not bring TCB along and that's for the ride.
14:15So, what's your reasons for, you think, bringing all these people together?
14:19Mostly passing it forward to the next generation.
14:22Me, my future kids or anyone around my age as well.
14:25Keeping those traditions, making the sauce, the pasta, the salami,
14:29putting all of that together and just, yeah, keeping it forward.
14:32Today we're celebrating the Festa della Repubblica.
14:35Effectively, it's Tiddly's Independence Day.
14:37Many years ago, they decided they didn't want to be part of the monarchy
14:41or part of the fascist regime, so they voted to be a republic
14:45and that's what today's celebrating.
14:46June 2, every year, the Italians celebrate this event.
14:50So, today is the first time we've ever run this at this club.
14:52Our amazing events manager, Josie, put upon her own shoulders
14:56to put this together and it's, you know, blown us out of the water.
14:593,000 people through the gate throughout the day.
15:02Wow.
15:03It's been a fantastic event for us.
15:04And we thank people from, you know, TCB, you guys,
15:06Brutza Lab and a lot of our other collaborators.
15:09Without you guys, it wouldn't have happened today.
15:11So, we really thank you guys for all your support.
15:13I appreciate that.
15:14Just looking around, all the people eating, drinking, dancing.
15:18It's what Italians do best.
15:19It's amazing.
15:20We love eating, the music's been fantastic
15:22and there's still people coming in.
15:23So, it's proven to be a fantastic event for us.
15:32So, it's right here.
15:33As you know, the Italians cook probably the best food in the world.
15:36So, a few of the stands we've got here is
15:38Zeppoli, Pizza, Arangini.
15:41How can you go wrong?
15:43So, my name's Aaron and I'm Mr Zeppoli,
15:45which is my business.
15:47It's authentic Italian doughnuts.
15:48We call them Zeppoli.
15:49So, we're here with my parents and one of my cousins.
15:52So, yeah, we're just bringing the flavour of Italy
15:55and a unique dessert,
15:57which you don't see much around in Melbourne.
15:59One of the first to do it.
16:00Thought I'd bring it along and let everyone enjoy it.
16:04That's good.
16:08So, Paul, I must admit,
16:10I tried the doughnuts over there.
16:11They were pretty good.
16:12Yep.
16:13How's your cannoli stack up?
16:14Well, I think they speak for themselves
16:16and I bring them down here to show people what real cannoli are like.
16:18and they're not filled fresh, they're not real, you know?
16:21And try them.
16:22You tell me.
16:23Don't worry, I will try them.
16:24Don't worry about that.
16:25I see your hand making all of them.
16:26That's unbelievable, isn't it?
16:27Oh, everything goes from scratch.
16:28Otherwise, I've got too much pride.
16:31That's my problem.
16:32But if I don't make everything from scratch,
16:33I wouldn't sell it.
16:34That is good.
16:35Yeah?
16:36Paul, well done, mate.
16:38Yeah, well, it's pretty good.
16:40I can't complain.
16:41It's deliciously, awesome man!
16:44I love it!
16:45I love it!
16:46I love it!
16:47I love it!
16:54That's just...
16:55That's a cuisine that's now all over the world.
16:57Everyone's claiming this one now.
16:59French crepes, Japanese crepes.
17:01I do crepes.
17:02Yes.
17:03Crepes for everybody.
17:04Beautiful.
17:05Walking around.
17:06Taste North food.
17:07I come past your stand.
17:08Couldn't say no.
17:09Good on you, mate.
17:10That's wonderful.
17:11So how did all this generate?
17:13Just from the Park Ball Shopping Centre and meeting Maria.
17:18Yep.
17:19From the trucks, the news buyers.
17:20Yep.
17:21And she invited me along.
17:23My daughter fell in love with our strawberries and chocolate.
17:25Clubber Cups, strawberries and chocolate, and that was it.
17:28So we've been thankfully and gratefully claimed by the Italian community.
17:33Oh, beautiful.
17:34I appreciate it.
17:35Love it.
17:36And this is what we were talking about before.
17:37All local business.
17:38Park Ball just up the road.
17:39And it brings everyone together, doesn't it?
17:41And look, I cannot...
17:42I come from a small town called Forkberry.
17:44Sure.
17:45I come to Melbourne, leading Melbourne for five years.
17:47And I was just like...
17:49I felt like I'm home.
17:51The community at the Park Mall is just...
17:53And Keesborough.
17:54This whole area is just amazing.
17:56Really great community.
17:58Good luck.
17:59Thanks, guys.
18:00Wow.
18:01Look at this.
18:02Well done.
18:09So, Michelle.
18:10Tell me a little bit about yourself.
18:13So, I'm Australian-born.
18:15Yep.
18:16I'm obsessed with background.
18:17Yep.
18:18And today, or at all our events, we do arostichini, the lamb skewers.
18:21Yep.
18:22And then we have crumb chicken and spicy pork.
18:24There's an chino.
18:25Good.
18:26So, we get out of the restaurant and out into the open.
18:28So, where's the restaurant?
18:29Promote that?
18:30Come on.
18:31Epping.
18:32Epping.
18:33Victoria.
18:34We're very happy, very proud of our Seze culture.
18:36So, we opened up a restaurant.
18:37And it's in Taran Drive, Epping.
18:41And we do breakfast and lunch Monday to Saturday and Friday, Saturday dinner.
18:45So, they didn't.
18:46So, you're a town background officer, you just said?
18:47Yep.
18:48So, you're just bringing up the next tradition here, or?
18:50Yeah.
18:51I'm hoping I can pass it on to the kids, at least the nephews, to be honest.
18:55Wow.
18:56Look at this.
18:57Oh, sorry.
18:58Look at this.
18:59Look at this.
19:00Oh, sorry.
19:01Look at this.
19:02Have one with you.
19:03Have one with me.
19:04Do we go chin-ching?
19:05Salute!
19:06The day was absolutely amazing.
19:11It started off overcast and it's like, is this going to happen?
19:14Is the rain going to hold back on us?
19:16Well, it was nerve-wracking at first.
19:19So, getting onto the back of the truck, our stage for the day, a few people were still like,
19:23you could tell they were waiting for us to get on stage and no sooner that I was introduced
19:29and I opened my mouth, it was just like you saw the flock of people coming in.
19:32It's like, uh-oh, here we go.
19:34And it was just a rollercoaster.
19:35It was really good.
19:36It was a great feeling.
19:38The atmosphere on a perspective as an entertainer was unbelievable because you didn't just see
19:43the older generations.
19:44You saw a lot of younger kids there, obviously with their grandparents or young families.
19:49And to see the young people, you know, getting involved, as they say, with the older generation,
19:56it was amazing.
19:57The atmosphere of having them together in one at Fretcher-Zoodle.
20:01Because obviously it was the first time they've done a festa there, it was like,
20:04on this side of Melbourne, it was awesome.
20:06We've brought down some trucks.
20:12We've got the first one we've got is the 404 and then we've got the G-Cab and the 909
20:17and the one on the stage for the band today.
20:20It's been a great turnout.
20:21A lot of people will be showing up and a lot of people here.
20:24And, yeah, it's really good for the company and good for everyone else.
20:27So, Jess, we've got a special surprise with the trucks today.
20:30Can you tell us a bit about it?
20:31Yes, so we've got a little surprise happening for everyone that's here today.
20:35So, basically, we're going to light up the Italian flag, green, white and red.
20:38We've got the three trucks parked at the front.
21:01Coming up, the boys from MCG dismantled the crane from the top of the CFMEU Wellness Centre.
21:23Hi, I'm Colin.
21:24If you're looking for tyres, mechanical service or just general advice, come on down to Moonee Ponds Tyres.
21:29We offer a full range of servicing from tyres to brakes to all sorts of general mechanical repairs.
21:34Every vehicle will get an inspection to make sure the vehicle is safe.
21:38In terms of tyres, we do a large range of tyres from the smallest lawnmower tyre
21:42right the way up to the largest earthmover tyre.
21:45We do wheel alignments, we do batteries.
21:47Any time you need any tyres, just come and see us.
21:50We're at the Training and Wellness Centre for the CFMEU and we have the boys from MCG cranes dismantling the towel crane today.
22:13They basically come in, climb the crane, take the boom down and then they take the top assembly down,
22:20which consists of the cabin, the A-frame, the counterweights, the slew ring.
22:25Then they remove the tower sections of the crane out of the lift shaft.
22:29We've been around about 16 years in various formats and today we boast about 47 tower cranes and probably about 25 mobile cranes.
22:398 or 9 semis and 3 or 4 rigid trucks.
22:42Today we've got the 350 tonner, which is our biggest mobile crane.
22:45We've got the 20 tonne franer there and the tower crane that we're dismantling is a Usita 186.
22:52First thing is the guys go up and they derope the crane, dereave it, take the hook ropes off.
22:57They take the buffing jib rope off and then we start dismantling the crane with counterweights coming out first.
23:03This crane's got a 30 metre jib which we dismantled as a 30 metre section onto the ground.
23:07We then go A-frame, machine deck, cabin slew and then we take the towers out, which is what we're doing at the moment.
23:13The counterweights weigh 2.5 tonne each, the jib come in at about 5.5, A-frame about 4 tonne.
23:20The machine deck is the heaviest lift at about 11 tonne and then we drop back down to cabin slew ring about 9 tonne.
23:27And the towers are coming in at 8 tonne each.
23:36The gold card rigger climbs the tower and dismantles the boom section and then the rest of the crane.
23:42They're amazing, that is an extremely dangerous job.
23:45That is high risk activity at its utmost.
23:48I'd say the biggest hazard is falling from height.
23:50So the guys are in harnesses all the time up the top there.
23:53They're trained with height awareness and gold card riggers being that they're specialist tower crane erectors and dismantlers.
23:58Yeah, the guys have a full safety harness with a double lanyard.
24:01So there's static lines outside any of the hand railed areas on the crane and any time they need to get outside that they'll have a double lanyard on too.
24:08But we try to keep them inside and hand rails most of the time and it's only the critical stuff that they need to go out.
24:13But the guys are trained with the gotcha kit training.
24:16They've got a height awareness ticket and they're gold card riggers too, which means they're tower crane riggers.
24:21The other hazards are, yes, we are lifting some heavy loads.
24:24So chains are tested, all the lifting gears tested and kept up to date.
24:27The guys really do know what they're doing.
24:29They do this three or four times a week.
24:31So for us it's a normal day.
24:33For anybody else on site it's one out of the box.
24:35Yeah, well the job site's been shut down so that in itself becomes an exclusion zone.
24:39And of course the neighbouring building being the CFMEU is shut today as well.
24:43So we've got a very, very good exclusion zone.
24:45This is extremely high risk.
24:47It's probably the highest risk activity that we do in the construction industry.
24:51We have a 50 metre exclusion zone when we're taking off the boom and the top section of the tower crane.
24:56Then once we get to the tower section we have a 30 metre exclusion zone.
25:00A lot of the tower crane erection and dismantling has to be done out of ours.
25:05Simply because we would be unable to evacuate the building which is next door.
25:09That's within the 50 metre exclusion zone.
25:12So we have to do a lot of this high risk activity out of ours on a Sunday.
25:16MCG have gold card riggers, truck drivers, they have franta drivers and mobile crane drivers
25:24and they all work together as a team.
25:26Everybody has a specific task and they dismantle the crane.
25:31It's an extremely well-oiled machine.
25:33Yeah, we've got about five trucks running today.
25:35We've got eight people on site today and we've got a team of guys in our yard today unloading as well.
25:41So all up I think there's probably 15, 16 people involved in today's activities.
25:45So obviously you come here, the traffic control has set out a bit of an exclusion zone for us.
25:50And you bring the 350 in as we did this morning.
25:53The boys are up in the air, you dereg the crane, start getting the counterweight off,
25:57then the jib comes out and so on and so forth.
26:00And you've got the franta down here as a backup crane and to rotate all the pieces onto the truck.
26:04Ninety percent of the pieces need to be rotated onto the trucks for transport
26:09because obviously they come down vertically and then they need to be horizontal.
26:12So it's obviously pretty high risk work but we've all been doing it for a while
26:16so you sort of minimise those risks with some pretty experienced guys here.
26:20Some of these components are extremely heavy.
26:22We have the mobile crane, the 350 tonne one which dismantles the tow crane.
26:26Then we have a smaller franta crane which is a pick and carry crane which loads a lot of the stuff onto the trucks.
26:48Donna controls all the traffic.
26:49She does a fantastic job and she does all the logistics, organises all the trucks coming in and out.
26:55Works in a team and looks after the pedestrians and basically manages the traffic for us all day.
27:01Everybody's well organised and well trained and everybody has a specific role to do and it works.
27:07MCG are fantastic, they're a really sleek operation.
27:10We've got a great team, as I said the boys know what they're doing
27:13and we work together three, four days a week and there's a lot of planning that goes with it.
27:16We work out how many trucks we need, what truck's taking what, where it's going.
27:20So there's a bit more than what you sort of see just on site.
27:23I guess everyone just gels pretty well, that helps a lot.
27:26There's a bit of camaraderie amongst the guys so I think everything sort of just works,
27:30everyone gets along and sort of smashes the job out and gets it done.
27:33So I think not a lot of other companies can pull the crane down as big as we do.
27:37The next stage is once the crane comes out of the lift shaft,
27:40we're able to get into the lift shaft and start to construct the lifts.
27:45Next up we head to Eureka garages and sheds where the boys pick up a load from Selection Steel.
28:06Invisible Carbras are a paint protection film.
28:15It's 0.2mm thick polyurethane with an adhesive on the back.
28:20We computer cut it to suit each vehicle and then apply it.
28:24I just finished repainting my 1968 Corvette.
28:27I spent a lot of money on it and cried when I got a first chip in it.
28:30So I decided I needed some sort of protection.
28:33We have patents for most modern cars.
28:35Anything we don't have a patent for, we can create a set like we did for the VG.
28:40Re-sprays can cost somewhere between $10,000 and $100,000.
28:44Putting paint protection film on the paint to stop any chips
28:47is a very cost effective way of protecting the car.
28:50You can find Invisible Carbras on the web, invisiblecarbras.com.au
28:55or give us a call on 0382881041.
29:12TCB are essentially an extension of our team.
29:16The drivers come in every morning.
29:18They might as well be wearing a Selection Steel uniform
29:20and they do have the logo because they're in here bright and early.
29:23They're good people, they're like one of us.
29:25They come in, check the loads, check the runs, have a chat with everyone.
29:30And the relationship we have with TCB is incredibly important
29:33because we pride ourselves on customer service
29:36and if a customer is in strife or just needs something urgently,
29:41TCB are there to help us do that.
29:43And without them coming in early and getting steel to a customer next day
29:47or getting something there urgent, it would be difficult for us
29:50to deliver on that customer service that ultimately people love about Selection Steel.
29:55It's that personalised level of service and the ability to be nimble and flexible
30:00and help them out in a time of need.
30:06So our steel ends up in numerous applications.
30:09It can be commercial ducting, purlins for large commercial buildings, truck parts, steel framing, roofing, cladding,
30:21just about anything, you name it, our steel is turned into.
30:25We don't export any steel, so all of our customers, manufacturers, fabricators, roll formers, you name it,
30:31they're all in Australia and they're all manufacturing for the Australian market.
30:39Today we're at Selection Steel in Dandenong.
30:41So we're picking up some coils today for Eureka in Labden.
30:44Good bunch of people, isn't they?
30:46Procedure is good, like you just come in and open your truck up and make yourself ready
30:51and the boys will come and load you and see what you're after.
30:54You generally have paperwork to say where you're going and what customer.
30:59Eureka's a garage company, they make garages and sheds.
31:03Picked up, I think, 24 tonne for them today, seven coils, yeah.
31:08Yeah, we're taking a load over there for them today, hopefully they can do a bit of work for a change.
31:15I've been driving for TCB for seven years.
31:17No, I love it, I like it, yeah.
31:19It's interesting every day, like you're going different places every day
31:23and meeting different people and different conversations too, you know, when you get the time.
31:28Yeah, yeah, it's interesting.
31:30Being steel, it can slip.
31:32It is dangerous if it's not restrained properly.
31:46Oh, that's a Kenworth, so strong enough for the job.
31:50That's called a prairie wagon, so it's got a steel frame inside which is like a concertina effect
31:57with a curtain over the top to protect it from the rain and any moisture.
32:02Yeah, everything's loaded on the truck and we've checked the chains and everything like that.
32:06They're all secured, so we're ready to go and see the customer.
32:09So Eureka garages and sheds have been established for 35 years.
32:24Our range includes domestic and structural.
32:39Eureka started from initially sourcing materials from other roll forming companies
32:44to my very first roll forming machine.
32:47And we've grown now to an 11,000 square metre factory with no less than 20 roll formers
32:53and we produce all the components that go into our garages.
32:56We have complete from A to Z, from the concept to engineering,
33:01to mainly development by myself, right through to roll forming, to pre-assembling
33:07and to dispatch to the customers.
33:10We have been doing this for 35 years and proud to do it
33:13and looking forward to doing another 35 if time permits.
33:16Our garage range is extensive from garages to farm sheds to barns
33:22to two-storey garages to sleep outs, you name it.
33:25And we're a company that has grown to meet customers' specific demands.
33:30We don't just sell our stock standard range.
33:33We customise for customers' needs.
33:35That's been, I guess, the secret of Eureka's success.
33:44So Selection Steel has been a long-time supply to Eureka garages and sheds.
33:49It's a company that we rely upon with our timely deliveries,
33:53competitive pricing and all-round nice guys to work with or purchase from.
33:58So that's helped to make our business grow to what it is today
34:01and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Selection Steel in the future.
34:07Being able to give the customer what they are required to blend in
34:10with the existing roof colours, et cetera,
34:13we offer the complete range of colours
34:15and that can mix and match with trims and roof and doors, et cetera.
34:19So we customise the external experience to suit the customer requirements
34:23and Selection Steel have all the colours to meet that demand.
34:28Eureka is a manufacturer of garages and sheds.
34:37We manufacture anything from your small single garage or carport
34:40up to your large industrial structures made out of universal beam or web truss frames.
34:45We have 11 branches throughout Victoria and one branch in Tasmania
34:50and they act as a retail outlet and they are there for the sole purpose
34:53of the face-to-face contact with our customers.
35:00Eureka employs approximately 120 people in Melbourne and in the country of Victoria
35:06and these include engineers, drafting people, office staff, machine operators, truck drivers, installers indirectly,
35:16electricians and this has led to the success of Eureka.
35:22One of the success of Eureka has been to be at the forefront with machinery.
35:26My aim has always been to automate.
35:28So with that we have our standard cladding machines, corrugated and the like,
35:33our purlin machines, flashings.
35:35We also have a beam liner to process structural steel.
35:40We have laser cutting tube cutters.
35:42We were the first in Australia to get a 12 metre tube cutter and laser and plasma cutters.
35:47So they're all machines that we have in these premises that will enable us to be self-sufficient
35:52and being able to deliver products in a timely manner to the customer.
36:09Coming up, the lads from the CFMEU give us a personalised tour of the massive East West Link project.
36:16You imagine winning the bike of your dreams.
36:25Cam from Snaz, we love giving away dirt bikes and motorsport gear.
36:29The latest Enduros, the maddest two bangers you dreamed of as a young tacker.
36:33Or check out these kid packages.
36:35Whatever you do, leave the grind behind and get out and enjoy life.
36:42At Snaz, we like building a community of bike loving people
36:45who like to leave the grind behind.
36:48We understand life gets in the way.
36:50Not everyone can afford the bike of their dreams.
36:53So we provide giveaways that allow people to get out and enjoy life.
36:58So go to snaz.com.au or scan the QR code in the corner of the screen
37:02and check out some of our crazy, crazy giveaways.
37:15So we're working on the Westgate Tunnel Project.
37:23And we've got the East Zone, the West Zone and also the Tunnel Zone.
37:27Such a large project, it spans quite a lot of the CBD and surrounding areas
37:31around Footscray, Spotswood, Yarraville.
37:34Also it comes all the way through from the West Zone,
37:37which is all the way from Altona, Leverton, all the way through Williamstown.
37:42And it's a big iconic project which is going to help a lot of cars,
37:46trucks off the road and free up the traffic
37:48and really add to the infrastructure around the area.
37:51A part of the project is getting a lot of the trucks off the Westgate Freeway
37:54because currently it's a lot of traffic that goes over there,
37:57a lot of traffic congestion and a lot of the new infrastructure
38:00that we're building here is going to help that out,
38:03especially coming over from the West to free that up and have direct access
38:07for the trucks to go down to the docks and help with the infrastructure.
38:13The scope of this project is massive.
38:15We've got everything from roads to shared user paths.
38:19It ranges from the CBD to the West.
38:22Yeah, it's just a massive project.
38:24Some of these bridge sections have come in at over 400 tonnes.
38:27We've had multiple lifts, which is a dual lift with two 600 tonnes
38:32mobile cranes.
38:34That in itself is pretty complicated,
38:36but then when you add in the factor of the public,
38:39yeah, so it's just been crazy being a part of it.
38:49The Footscray Road, all of that was done from scratch,
38:51which starts from the beginning, which is all, you know,
38:54board piles, concrete, and then it goes upwards from that,
38:57which is piers, craneage.
38:59And the section we went to was over the water.
39:01So that's all done from scratch
39:03and obviously built in the water while it's live.
39:06So it's been a fantastic opportunity to represent
39:08and continue to represent members out on this job with the CFMEU.
39:12And it starts from the basics of keeping a good tidy site,
39:15which is our site labourers, all the way through from our scaffolders,
39:18building safe accesses to gate people as well.
39:22As a labour on site, our riggers, crane crew,
39:26and it's been great and obviously pushing a lot of diversity,
39:29which we're all for because, you know, we're a diverse union
39:31and we want everyone to have a good go at having a good earn.
39:38This is just to take all the congestion out of the suburbs,
39:41the surrounding suburbs.
39:42So for trucks heading from west to north or north to west,
39:45this gives everybody the second option
39:48of not wanting to go over the west gate bridge.
39:51They can use the west gate tunnel.
39:53We're building this job in and around the public,
39:55in and around live roads.
39:57You know, in a perfect world,
39:58you'd be able to shut down every single major road at every time
40:01and then just build what was required.
40:03But in this instance, we need a lot of shutdown sections
40:05and to be able to progress the job, closing down areas at a time,
40:09but all the while building while there's still pedestrians, cars,
40:13a lot of cyclists and stuff going by.
40:16We're able to have an opportunity of getting some shots of the Valloway,
40:19which is built.
40:20There are a couple of sections in,
40:21which is going to be a high-speed bicycle path,
40:24which will enable cyclists to come to and from the west into the city,
40:28which will actually be over the Footscray Road,
40:31which will really help our cyclists, you know,
40:33which is what we're all about.
40:35With the shared user path that we're building on the project,
40:37the cyclists will be able to get on the Docklands
40:39and have a safe passage right up through Footscray Road into Footscray.
40:44We've had quite a lot of dynamic and work areas
40:56that we need to fulfil what we're trying to achieve out here,
40:59which went from, you know, working on water,
41:01which is an area called 401, which is over the water.
41:04Obviously, we're not draining it out,
41:05so you've got to work off barges, off platforms, rigs and craneage and stuff,
41:10so we had to make sure that we're doing it safely
41:12and have all the safety mechanisms in place,
41:14so no-one's obviously at risk while working at that.
41:17We had dynamics of working at elevated roads as well,
41:20so making sure that there's nothing underneath that can injure workers.
41:24And then as we progressed down the project,
41:26there was also working over power stations,
41:28which we had to then have certain provisions in place,
41:30so we didn't have anyone was at risk lifting girders over live power,
41:34all in consultation with the workforce
41:36and then working through with management
41:38to come up with the solutions needed.
41:41So we've got the portals,
41:45the north portal and the two south portals,
41:47the inbound and outbound one,
41:49and we're also in the tunnel zone as well
41:51when our trades start in there.
41:53Still got about 12 months to go,
41:55so still got a bit to do.
41:57A few delays on the project.
41:58We've just mainly been outside the tunnel at the moment,
42:01but our trades are starting in there soon
42:04and we'll get into the tunnel with our finishing trades in there.
42:11We've got form workers, concreters, finishing trades and that
42:15in the trans-urban building we built in their control centre there.
42:18So we had painters, plasterers, tilers.
42:21Also got train operators, builders, labourers as well.
42:25There's a broad range of trades we look after.
42:27Good for everyone to be part of the union.
42:29The more people we've got, the more power we have.
42:35It's been fantastic, great opportunity to be able to come out here
42:38and not only represent workers but be a part of such a large scale
42:42and we are saying it's going to be an iconic project
42:44once it's finished for all the good it's going to do
42:46and also just actual visual and the stance and how it looks,
42:49you know, as you're getting around.
42:51We saw the new green pedestrian bridge and stuff
42:53and, you know, at one stage it wasn't there
42:55and now we've built it and now it is
42:57and this becomes part of the overall landscape of Melbourne.
43:00But yeah, it's been a great and ongoing honour, I guess you would say,
43:03to be able to be on this project and represent workers.
43:06It's definitely a privilege to be in this project,
43:09representing CFMEU members,
43:11being a health and safety representative,
43:13looking after them, making sure they're paid right,
43:15making sure they're safe and making sure they go home.
43:19Next time on Rides Down Under, Aussie Truckers.
43:22It's all about the ladies.
43:24We meet proud CFMEU shop steward, Tanya Bossig.
43:27This lady is a dynamo on and off the job.
43:31We catch up with Nicole, manager and fabricator at Diesel Doctor.
43:36She can do it all.
43:37Welding, driving trucks, excavators.
43:40And did I mention she's a fitness fanatic and pole dancer?
43:44All this and more next time on Rides Down Under, Aussie Truckers.
43:49Our crew stays at Quality Hotel Robertson Gardens, Brisbane.
