00:00This is called getting into the war paint zone.
00:25Game day ready, baby.
00:28My parents are blue-collar growing up,
00:34so they didn't make a lot of money.
00:37And I remember my mom and dad saved money up
00:40for the Florida professional football camp.
00:43The neat thing about going to that camp
00:45is all the players coming in.
00:47Steve Wilson, Doug Williams, Leroy Selman.
00:52Oh, my goodness, you know, the legend.
00:55When I was at football camp,
00:58I was a fat, heavy kid, but I was strong.
01:01They said, go to your position.
01:03So I went to the defensive line coach.
01:05He goes, kid, you're too small.
01:07You got to go to the linebackers.
01:09The linebacker coach, he goes, kid, you're not fast enough.
01:12I'm sitting there, I'm literally getting choked up,
01:16and, uh, Mark Cockney.
01:19Mark Cockney comes up with his first interception of the year.
01:25Captain Crunch number 33 comes up to me.
01:29Never seen him a day in my life.
01:31Didn't know him as a kid.
01:32Puts his arm around me, and he goes,
01:35don't worry about it, you're coming with us.
01:38Little did I know he was a defensive back.
01:41He took the time out to work with me,
01:44a fat kid, slow and chubby,
01:47and actually made something of me.
01:50This is Mark Cockney's autograph saying,
01:52keep working, Mark Cockney, 33, go Bucs.
01:55I used to make sure I stood just like him,
01:57you know, like I was, like, being Mark Cockney,
02:00you know, out there.
02:03I'll never forget, at the end of that camp,
02:06I ended up getting the most improved award,
02:09which is this little football trophy about yay high.
02:14To this day, it's the most valuable memorabilia I have
02:18of any Buccaneer.
02:23It's hard to say to people in words
02:27how much a child can be changed.
02:31Wow.
02:32Just amazing how those little things in life
02:35make a big deal later on down the road.
02:53And when Doug came in and provided the spark
02:59that he provided for our offense,
03:01it was inspiring, you know?
03:02It's fun to play when you know you have a chance to be good.
03:05We're in three playoffs out of four years,
03:08and I'm all excited.
03:09We're going to sign Doug Williams again,
03:11get another four or five years out of him.
03:12This will be great.
03:13At that particular time, there was only 28 teams
03:16in the National Football League,
03:19and my salary ranked number 54 throughout the league.
03:23My backhoe quarterback was making more money than me,
03:25so that's where I stood from a pay standpoint.
03:28It was that bad.
03:29You know, they offered a certain amount of money,
03:32$400,000, and I was asking for six,
03:35and everybody was making six, seven, $800,000,
03:38so I asked for six.
03:40I said, I've been here five years,
03:43played my ass off.
03:45I got beat up, whatever you want.
03:48I said, I'm not playing for no if money.
03:50Obviously, he was one of the biggest reasons,
03:52if not the biggest reason,
03:54that we had had the success.
03:56We wanted such good things for Doug
03:58and wanted him to get his money.
04:00More importantly, we wanted him to be happy.
04:03One thing I did understand was the fact
04:05that it wasn't all about football.
04:07You know, life don't live or die with football.
04:11In 1982, I got married.
04:14Next thing you know, we was expecting a baby girl,
04:17and January the 14th, we had a baby girl.
04:22At the end of the season,
04:23they came to my house for dinner.
04:26They left my house to drive to Zachary, Louisiana
04:29to see his family, to show them the baby.
04:32One morning, she woke up and told me she had a headache.
04:36And it was hurting so bad.
04:38So we got in the van and drove to the hospital.
04:40And when we got there, they took x-rays and everything.
04:43And the doctor came out and told me she had an aneurysm.
04:48And at night, you know, she started feeling bad.
04:51And it was raining, it was storming.
04:53And the doctor came out and told me that she was gone.
05:01There was a heck of a burden on that young man.
05:03It just, every person on the Buccaneers felt so sorry for him.
05:08I had a five-month-old daughter.
05:11And the most important thing is do something that's gonna make sure
05:14that you and her can be comfortable.
05:16I remember when I got the call that she had passed.
05:20And that was a devastating phone call for me.
05:24In the midst of all that, man,
05:26he's dealing with a contract.
05:29We were hoping that Culverhouse would have signed him to another contract,
05:34but he was adamant.
05:35He did not want Doug Williams as his quarterback anymore.
05:37John McKay drafted him, not Culverhouse.
05:40I know it bothered Coach McKay, because that was his guy.
05:44My dad was a church and state guy, right?
05:47You're church, state. You're separate.
05:49You're not...
05:50You don't get involved as a football coach in contracts.
05:53You don't get involved in the business side.
05:56It became deflating to him over time.
06:00And what I think really bothered him with the situation
06:04is how it became personal for Doug.
06:08Because of the way the league was structured,
06:11even though your contract's up, they still had your rights.
06:15So unless they traded your rights, you couldn't do anything.
06:18I didn't play no football in 83, period. Nowhere.
06:22And I got a call later on about playing in the USFL.
06:26Today, a new football season began.
06:28The United States Football League.
06:30The USFL starts with owners who have money,
06:33new nationwide television contracts worth $35 million,
06:37and some named coaches.
06:39So Doug signed with the USFL, the Oklahoma Outlaws.
06:42And that was it for Doug's career at Tampa Bay.
06:45That's the thing, you know, to get a new start,
06:49a new opportunity to play football.
06:51Because it's obvious that down in Tampa,
06:53that the people didn't show that they really wanted me to play.
06:58So I would like to be somewhere that the people appreciate me
07:01and want me to play.
07:02The most important thing I learned here in Tampa
07:04is the fact that it's all about family, no matter what happens.
07:08And I think going through here with the contract situation
07:11and losing my wife in the same year
07:14was probably one of the toughest times
07:16that any individual could ever have.
07:18And the most important thing is survival.
07:21And I found a way to put all that behind me
07:23and just go forward and do what you can do.
07:25Yeah, Doug Williams, when he left,
07:28kind of took the steam right out of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
07:34Hopefully, with Doug gone, we can continue to play good football.
07:38And I wish Doug the best of luck when he goes to Oklahoma.
07:42Can you imagine losing a quarterback,
07:45a franchise quarterback that's taking you from worst to first?
07:50Culver House felt Doug wasn't worth it.
07:53And we went from first to worst.
07:57You got to remember, he was our leader.
08:00Doug was the leader. He led that team.
08:03We talk about the Doug Williams curse.
08:06And I knew from then on, they're going to have trouble winning here.
08:09It all came crashing down when the management did not want to pay Doug.
08:16Fans called it the Doug Williams curse.
08:20By treating him so poorly, we had cursed ourselves.
08:24And our owner had cursed us.
08:27One of 1983's worst entries was the Tampa Bay Bucs,
08:31so they were the first to open camp on Tuesday.
08:33Coach John McKay will probably spend a lot of time
08:36standing on the practice field with a cigar between his lips,
08:39wishing he could get quarterback Doug Williams back from the USFL.
08:43We had a great group of guys.
08:46But we just was not innovative enough offensively to be successful.
08:57My dad's health in 84, not good.
09:00So he had been saying all along, I don't know, you know,
09:03how much longer this is going to go.
09:05He had heart issues. He is week to week.
09:08I just remember my mom telling me,
09:10hey, your dad's going to do a press conference today
09:13and your dad's going to retire today.
09:17The craziest game that I ever played in
09:19was John McKay's last game in 1984.
09:22I was starting quarterback,
09:24and we had a running back named James Wilder.
09:27He had a great year that year,
09:28and he was on pace to break O.J. Simpson's all-purpose total yard record,
09:34which means rushing and pass receiving.
09:37And so John McKay's mission for this game
09:39is to get James Wilder the all-time NFL record.
09:43We're just running the ball as much as we can,
09:48and they know it.
09:49Wilder, no surprise.
09:51Keeps the knees churning.
09:53Fits back, Wilder.
09:56What a play, Wilder!
10:00Touchdown, James Wilder!
10:04In the fourth quarter,
10:06James Wilder makes a four-yard touchdown.
10:09And it's a touchdown!
10:11James Wilder!
10:13And when he did that,
10:15the announcer came on the P.A. and said,
10:18and James Wilder needs 20 more yards
10:23to break the all-time NFL total yard record.
10:27And John McKay goes,
10:29oh, shit!
10:30He tells the kickoff team to onside kick.
10:34And it's up in the air for anybody!
10:39The Jets recover the ball.
10:41John McKay comes up to me and he says,
10:43we need to get the ball back
10:45so we can get the ball to James Wilder.
10:47We'll let him score.
10:48Westley Walker on the catch!
10:53From the 22-yard line, O'Brien again.
10:55And we basically fall down.
10:57We do a poor job of letting them score
11:00because it's too obvious.
11:01Touchdown!
11:06The Jets players, not happy.
11:09So now they onside kick.
11:12And here they come.
11:13Boots it!
11:14It's on the hop!
11:15The ball is loose!
11:16And the Bucs come up with it!
11:18Oh, brother!
11:19We get the ball, but we have no timeouts.
11:22So McKay tells us we're just going to go sweep left, sweep right, sweep left
11:27until the clock runs out.
11:29I want to bet Wilder gets the ball.
11:30Wilder!
11:31Wilder!
11:32Wilder!
11:33Wilder!
11:34Wilder again.
11:35No game.
11:37Wilder's got the ball.
11:40Not gonna happen.
11:41There'll be no record today for James Wilder, but he sure came close and had a fantastic season.
11:48James Wilder ended up short of the record.
11:52And, um, it was the craziest game of my career.
11:56Of course, my dad gets fined by the league for not being competitive.
12:01It's a big fine in those days.
12:03He didn't leave the league happy with that fine.
12:05Okay, fellas, we played a good game and we won, and I apologize to the Jets in a way.
12:11We tried to get Wilder to set the record.
12:13It was very difficult.
12:14But they did try to onside kick the ball.
12:16I think it was a good game.
12:17It was my last game.
12:18I enjoyed it.
12:19And that's about all I have to say.
12:21So this is my dad's hat.
12:23He started wearing this hat.
12:25Maybe it's in the 79 year.
12:27So now we get to the last game.
12:29I remember exactly how it went.
12:31He got home.
12:32He was still in his outfit.
12:34And gave me the hat and said, hey, let's keep this hat.
12:37You know, it may come in handy one day.
12:39I leave the arena with the thought that we have a solid team and there are some things we have to do.
12:44And we'll get those done in the very near future.
12:46Adios, gentlemen.
12:48God bless you.
12:49Thank you, John.
12:50Thank you, Coach.
12:51Thank you very much.
12:52I got to say, over my career here with Coach McKay, I grew to love that guy as a coach, as a person, and became a friend.
13:01John McKay loved his players or do anything for his players or fight for his players.
13:06Coach just wishes the best of luck.
13:08He always wishes us well no matter what we do, whether we're playing football or in any other type of endeavor.
13:14You know, basically that was what he told us, and he expressed his appreciation.
13:19He has all my respect as one of the great coaches to coach this game.
13:23I wish things would have been better because I sure wanted that Super Bowl championship.
13:30My God, you know, to be a champion was all our goals.
13:35Coach McKay, myself, Leroy, you know, Doug, and when things started to, you know, break down and unravel, it really hurt the team.
13:45I was participating, actually, in a Pro Bowl game, and felt a twinge in the back and didn't realize what it was.
13:57Thought it was a muscle strain, a muscle pull or something like that, only to discover later on that it was a herniated disc.
14:05If you're playing this game, you play it at your hardest.
14:08You play it at the best level that you possibly can, but also realizing that any one play could be your last play,
14:15and we never know when that's gonna happen.
14:17Leroy had big shoulders.
14:19He carried a lot.
14:21Always very unassuming.
14:23I don't think he ever realized how great he was.
14:26Fans, please welcome number 63, Leroy Selman!
14:38I'll never forget this.
14:39One night at 2 o'clock, I woke up.
14:41Leroy was crying.
14:43I immediately thought that, well, you know, we haven't won a game in, you know, 15 games, so that may be it.
14:49He looked at me and said, there's a lot of young kids and people who hurt in this world.
14:55We have to do what we can to make life good for every person on Earth.
15:00That he would, even during the time that he was losing, he would point to the need of other people.
15:07I think that was the driving force that drove him for the rest of his life.
15:11Tampa always draws a connection with anybody who's a good person and gives effort in the community.
15:18That's what lights a fire instantly in this community.
15:23And that was, that was Leroy Selman.
15:26The LA Express of the USFL announced today they have signed BYU quarterback Steve Young to a deal that reportedly will pay him $40 million.
15:45Young, the left-hander, dumps it across the middle, Steve Young with better than 400 yards himself.
15:53After College of BYU, I had this opportunity to go to the USFL, which is a spring league, which was signing all the top talent, Herschel Walker and Reggie White.
16:02So I decided to go down to the USFL.
16:05I want to say that I think it's difficult to put it in perspective in a sense that, you know, geez, why don't you just go with the known?
16:12This is something that's new, obviously. As far as I'm concerned, I just want to go play ball.
16:17The USFL lasted three seasons, and they were intending to continue playing, but disbanded before that final season happened.
16:28The Players Association came to an agreement with the league to allow all of us that went to the USFL to be drafted in a supplemental draft.
16:36The NFL held a draft of USFL and CFL players today.
16:41Tampa Bay went for Express quarterback Steve Young first.
16:44I remember landing in Tampa in the middle of the season.
16:54Lehman Bennett was the coach, and Lehman Bennett, what I understood, was selling RVs the year before.
17:00I liked Coach Bennett. He was a collegial good guy that wanted good things for people.
17:05We haven't won as many games as we would like to win, but nevertheless, I feel like we have at least laid the cornerstone
17:13for the future, and I'm looking forward to it.
17:18I'd just gotten into town. I don't play the first week.
17:22Steve DeBerg, he's starting. He goes to the line of scrimmage, and we had this really complex audibling scheme.
17:30I've never seen anything like it before or after in my whole life.
17:33In those days, we hardly ever audible, but they had a really good defense.
17:38And so he gets to the line of scrimmage, and he's like, check, check, red, 65.
17:43He wants to change the play. And then the defense adjusts.
17:46And he's like, oh, check, check, check. No, no, not that.
17:49He's at the line of scrimmage saying this. Not that, not that.
17:52I had to call my own plays. I'm yelling out, red, 57, 57, 57.
17:58The defense does something else. He goes, check, check, check. The clock's going down.
18:02He's like, check, check, check. Go back to the original play.
18:08He yells it out, go back to the original play. And then they run the play.
18:15That was the greatest audible in the history of man.
18:19Yeah, that was hard.
18:21There weren't a lot of losers in the locker room, but there was a lot of losing.
18:29And so in that way, it was a shock.
18:34I don't know if Steve Young knew what he was getting into.
18:37He played at BYU, all kinds of accolades when he went there.
18:41At the five, he's gone!
18:43Oh!
18:44He seriously could have played quarterback, running back, wide receiver, DB.
18:51He could have played any of those. That's how athletic he was.
18:57My first start, we played the Detroit Lions at home.
19:00And I ran all over the place.
19:02Young is hit. He's gonna run with it again, and he's got lots of room.
19:08Steve Young with just outstanding mobility.
19:11It was electrifying.
19:13When he would run, fans would go crazy.
19:16It was stuff that people didn't see up to that point.
19:19He was one of the first to be doing it that way.
19:22Steve Young, a lot of excitement for his first playing time in the NFL.
19:2824 yards.
19:31Donald Iguabuike wins the ball game for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
19:38Steve Young, a happy young man.
19:42He was the 12th quarterback to start a game for the Buccaneers.
19:45He was the first one to win his very first start.
19:47So there was some optimism there.
19:49Lehman Bennett and his Buccaneers must be pleased.
19:54The next week, we flew to Green Bay and had the biggest blizzard in Green Bay history.
19:59What about Steve Young making his second start in the National Football League?
20:04How's he gonna react to these kinds of conditions?
20:06Talking to him right before the game, he was concerned about the wind and the snow.
20:10Difficult conditions here in Green Bay.
20:12We'll find out how the Buccaneers like it here in Antarctica.
20:15We're all in white, and I can't see anything.
20:19Like, literally, I drop back to pass, I'm like, it's a blizzard.
20:22I can't see it. I'm dressed in white.
20:24Steve Young, back to pass, into the wind.
20:26And it is ruled incomplete.
20:28That was a game that defensive end for the Packers put me down in a sack
20:38and jammed my face in the snow, and it packed in my face, and I couldn't breathe.
20:43Character with his fifth sack of the afternoon.
20:48I was freaking out and trying to get so that I could get some breath.
20:51I'm like, I can't breathe.
20:53I can't. It's too much snow.
20:55He got his face and his whole helmet pushed down at least halfway into the snow.
21:00Half of his helmet was in the snow then.
21:03Just before half, I think I'm 0 for, like, 10.
21:07And I'm like, oh, my gosh, what if I'm the first player in the history of the game
21:12that didn't complete a pass?
21:14I was panicked about it.
21:16I told James Wilder, James, look, I'm going to drop back to pass,
21:19and I'm going to shovel you the ball, and at least I'll be one for something.
21:25Here's Young back to pass.
21:27Time.
21:28Complete to Wilder.
21:30And the ice and the snow and the cold, the blizzard.
21:34The Green Bay Packers have defeated the Buccaneers 21 to nothing.
21:38And it was total domination by the Green Bay Packers.
21:42By the end of the season, we go 2 and 14.
21:45I mean, it was, it's rough. It was rough.
21:47Losing is an infection, and it gets into the bones.
21:51They can't get out of it.
21:54They've gotten an infusion of enthusiasm with their new quarterback.
21:57I think they just have to regroup.
21:59They're a team that has to shake that losing attitude.
22:03You get to 1986, the Buccaneers have the first pick in the upcoming draft.
22:13The Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the fifth time in the last 11 years have the first pick.
22:17The question is, who will they select?
22:19The big discussion has been, of course, Bo Jackson, the Heisman Trophy winner of 1986.
22:24What a football player he is. He's capable of going all the way on any plus.
22:30Bo Jackson is considered the best running back prospect to come along since O.J. Simpson.
22:36He's also a very good baseball player, and he loves playing baseball.
22:40Much doubt and discussion is whether he's going to go pro baseball or pro football.
22:45Just outstanding of those scores.
22:47He had not decided at that point if he was going to play baseball or football,
22:50but how would he turn down the instant millions of an NFL contract
22:54compared to making peanuts going to the minor leagues in baseball?
22:58Preparing yourself for the future. Baseball? Football?
23:02After all, I'll just play ball.
23:07So we're recruiting Bo Jackson, and Mr. Kovarau says,
23:11well, we're going to have him come down for a visit.
23:13Come to Tampa. Let's see if you like the area.
23:16Show you the locker room. Meet some of the coaches.
23:19That type of thing.
23:24Bo Jackson was assured that he was not in any way risking
23:28the rest of his baseball eligibility if he took this flight.
23:32However, that was not the case.
23:35Because it was Hugh Kovarau's private plane, Bo did not pay for the ticket.
23:40Once he gets on that plane, it nullifies his amateurism at the NCAA.
23:45That was what ended up being the violation.
23:48When he went back the next day to play baseball,
23:50the baseball coach at Auburn says...
23:52Your baseball career is over at Auburn.
23:54They said Bo wanted to take a bat and just eat it. He was so upset.
24:00There were rumors. Did Hugh Kovarau's do this on purpose to end his chances at being in baseball?
24:09Bo got in touch with Mr. Kovarau's and said,
24:12don't ever think about drafting me. I will never, ever come to Tampa and play for you.
24:18After all that kind of stuff, Mr. Kovarau, who I developed a little relationship with,
24:26and he and I had conversations, he asked me,
24:28would you go to dinner with Bo Jackson and myself?
24:31And Mr. Kovarau said, let's see if we can convince him to come.
24:35And so we go to dinner. Bo comes in, says hello, and sits down.
24:39Mr. Kovarau was saying something to the maitre d' or whoever kind of sat us.
24:44He turned to me, like literally, he didn't even hardly say hello, and said,
24:47hey, by the way, I'm never coming here.
24:49And I'm like, like, we didn't even sit down.
24:52I'm like, uh, really?
24:54And he goes, yeah, no, I'm never coming here.
24:56And I said, well, what are you doing here?
24:58And he goes, oh, yeah, my agent, he wants me to come down here and make it,
25:00you know, he was saying something about making it look good or something.
25:03And, uh, but it was not happening.
25:06And then afterwards, Mr. Kovarau says, what do you think? It felt like it went pretty well, you know?
25:09I'm like, Mr. Kovarau, I think, uh, I think it's a no.
25:13There will be no mistaking this, the Buccaneers will make a pick.
25:18There will not be a trade.
25:19It appears they're going with Bo Jackson.
25:22The Buccaneers select first choice running back from Auburn, Bo Jackson.
25:29The Buccaneers called his bluff, still drafted him.
25:33We're very pleased with, uh, the draft of Bo.
25:37One thing, it's not a gamble as to his talent.
25:40And I'll take the gamble on whether he plays football or baseball.
25:44They thought that he would change his mind.
25:47Well, in sports today, Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson shocked the football world
25:51by signing a reported five-year, $5 million contract with the Kansas City Royals.
25:56Jackson left more than $7 million in a Tampa Bay uniform
25:59to don the colors of the AA Memphis Chicks.
26:02I told him he's not coming.
26:06Like, he looked me in the eye and told me he's not coming.
26:09And no one would believe me, so...
26:11When you're losing the first pick in the draft
26:14and not get nothing out of it, it's a killer.
26:18It's a roster killer, it's a team killer, it's a coach killer.
26:25It really set the organization back, and it was already set back.
26:31After one year, you get to go back into the draft.
26:35And then the Raiders drafted him.
26:37And out in front, and only one man to beat him.
26:40Easily can't run him down.
26:42He had the angle, but there goes Bo.
26:45And nobody catches Bo. Touchdown!
26:48He may not stop for Tacoma.
26:50There was just another thing that you could list
26:53to why did it stay so bad for so long.
27:02Good afternoon, everyone, and we really sincerely wish you
27:04a happy holiday season.
27:05The Cardinals, the home team, they've only won three times,
27:08and, of course, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers only twice.
27:111986, last game, if we lose this game,
27:18we're guaranteed the number one pick in the next year's draft.
27:22A lot of people in Tampa Bay would like to see the team lose,
27:25so they would get Vinny Testaverde.
27:26Whether or not he could beat out Steve Young would remain to be seen.
27:29Well, I think that's for the management to worry about, really.
27:31The management, maybe the coaches have that a little bit
27:33in the back of their mind, but they do have Steve Young,
27:35a fine young quarterback, and they can build that organization
27:38around a guy like that.
27:40It started from the first series.
27:42The coach would tell me the play,
27:44I would signal it to Steve,
27:46and he would go,
27:48What?
27:49Run, handoff.
27:51Throne for a loss.
27:53It would be third down and 15 yards,
27:56and we'd call a running play, try to get one yard.
28:00Quick draw, and it's a misdirection to Howard again.
28:03A loss of another yard.
28:05He would come over on the sideline, and he's going,
28:08What's going on?
28:09You know, you guys are calling ridiculous bad plays.
28:12A lot of time and a good throw.
28:14It's intercepted this time, not a good throw.
28:17We would know what defense they're gonna run,
28:19and we would call the play that would be the worst play
28:23you could run against that defense.
28:25Straight drop.
28:27Under a rush, but it's intercepted.
28:30I got thinking about it, it's like,
28:32is somebody telling people that, like,
28:34hey, we need to lose this game,
28:36and then we'll get the number one draft choice?
28:38Got a receiver open.
28:39Oh!
28:40Young has got to be frustrated.
28:42If this was a plan for the Buccaneers
28:45to try not to win that game,
28:47nobody bothered to let Steve Young know.
28:49Is this an inside joke that I don't know about,
28:51and no one told me?
28:52Good throw.
28:53In and out of the hands again.
28:55Good throw.
28:56In and out of the hands again.
28:58If I were Steve Young, I'd be upset too.
29:01My emotions were...
29:03I just overrun with it.
29:05I poured myself into the season,
29:07poured myself into that last game,
29:09and just got run over.
29:11And we go 2-14.
29:13And so now we have the first draft choice.
29:15The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had the worst record
29:17in the NFL this season.
29:18They were last in team defense,
29:20and next to last in offense.
29:22In two years under Lehman Bennett,
29:24they were 4-28.
29:25And yet, Bennett says he was surprised
29:27when owner Hugh Culverhouse fired him.
29:29This somewhat surprised me this morning
29:31when we talked some 15 or 20 minutes ago.
29:34I'm really not prepared to make any speeches.
29:37Lehman Bennett gets fired.
29:39In comes Ray Perkins.
29:41Not a miracle worker.
29:43I don't want the Tampa fans to think so.
29:46I do believe very strongly that we will win.
29:49Win, I don't know.
29:51Ray Perkins was an established, well-known coach.
29:55Fans here want a winner.
29:56They expect a winner.
29:57The media wants a winner.
29:58They expect a winner.
29:59But they'll get a winner.
30:00I guarantee you that.
30:02You're guaranteeing it?
30:03Money-back guarantee?
30:04I guarantee it.
30:06Benny Testaverde is gonna be a big, big factor.
30:12Just before the draft, Coach Perkins just calls me,
30:14and he says, hey, Young, you've been traded to the Cardinals.
30:18And take care.
30:20And hangs up.
30:22And I'm like, oh my gosh, could it get any worse?
30:26This is a disaster.
30:27So I called Mr. Culverhouse.
30:29And I said, Mr. Culverhouse, Coach Perkins just called me,
30:32said he's traded me to the St. Louis Cardinals.
30:35You told me just recently that I was your quarterback for life,
30:38and now I'm traded.
30:40He goes, yeah, I know.
30:41I'm sorry.
30:42New coach and tall, big, strong arm guy.
30:45He really wants him.
30:46And I was like, look, Mr. Culverhouse, I get it.
30:48It's fine.
30:49But, like, you can't send me to St. Louis.
30:51Give me a chance to find someplace.
30:53And he said, I agree.
30:55I told you that I committed you for life,
30:57and now I got amended.
30:58I got to make it right.
30:59And he called and nixed the trade.
31:01I mean, what owner has ever said that to a player?
31:04Ever.
31:05And then, next thing I know, Bill Walsh is calling me.
31:08The 49ers acquired a backup quarterback today.
31:11Steve Young comes to San Francisco from Tampa Bay
31:14in exchange for the Niners' second,
31:16second-round draft choice, their fourth pick, and cash.
31:19Bill Walsh is an absolute genius,
31:22and I think that learning from him,
31:24I think if I'm any good, we'll find out,
31:26because I think any potential I have,
31:28he'll be able to bring it out.
31:29You could say that I'm in the Pro Football Hall of Fame,
31:31and I got to thank you, Culverhouse,
31:33for allowing me to find a place.
31:49The 52nd annual National Football League selection meeting
31:52is now in session.
31:54Tapa selects on the first round,
31:56quarterback Vinny Testaverde, University of Miami.
32:04Vinny, we have your jersey, number 14,
32:07which is your college number,
32:09and we want you to score at least 14 points for every game.
32:13I know it's going to take a lot of hard work
32:16to take a giant step forward into winning,
32:18but we're all going to put our heads together and try the best.
32:22During my senior year in college,
32:24we're in the locker room on a Sunday morning.
32:26There's the Bucks on the television playing,
32:28and some of my college teammates started teasing me,
32:32saying that that's where I was going to play next year.
32:35And I was thinking to myself,
32:37yeah, that's okay,
32:38because I'm going to make a difference when I get there.
32:48I'm really excited about Vinny Testaverde joining the Bucks.
32:51Vinny, baby!
32:52Doing some favors.
32:54The Heisman Trophy winner has sparked a hope in fans
32:57that has been non-existent for a very long time.
33:02The Buccaneers didn't want to start him right off the bat
33:04in his rookie season,
33:06so it wasn't until the end of the season
33:08where Vinny got his first start.
33:10Back to pass.
33:12Going long.
33:14Out there, carrier.
33:16He's got it!
33:17Touchdown, Buccaneers!
33:18Wasn't that fantastic?
33:20He threw for 369 yards.
33:22You really saw what could be a really high-powered pass
33:26and a really high-powered passing attack.
33:28Vinny to pass.
33:29Fires.
33:30He'll touchdown!
33:31The final score might be in favor of the Saints,
33:34but Vinny Testaverde has really played a good football game.
33:39The Buccaneers didn't win that game,
33:41but it was still really promising.
33:43You know, this team has a lot of talent,
33:44and we still have a little bit of a way to go.
33:47But I think coming into next year,
33:49we're going to have that team.
33:51Testaverde drops.
33:52He's going deep.
33:53He's got a man!
33:56Testaverde goes back.
33:57Loads up.
33:58Fires.
33:59Intercepted by the Eagles.
34:00As a young team that wasn't winning,
34:03it kind of knocks you down.
34:05From the shotgun.
34:06A play mix-up.
34:07I think they played bad for the most part,
34:12terrible for some part, and good never.
34:16He's trying, like you said,
34:17to finesse the ball between the defensive back playing safety,
34:20then it was just a little overthrowing a little bit too much.
34:23In college football, what they did in Miami was legendary.
34:27But when quarterbacks come out of Cadillacs,
34:29and then you put them into forwards,
34:31you may not see the same player.
34:33Third interception.
34:34Third interception of the day for Testaverde.
34:37And he's going to be a great player.
34:38He's not right now.
34:39But he's going to be a great player as he learns
34:40and as he gets experience.
34:41Look out.
34:4230, 25, 20.
34:43Eugene Daniel will score.
34:44Touchdown, Colts.
34:45Touchdown, Colts.
34:46Touchdown, Colts.
34:47And he's going to be a great player as he learns
34:48and as he gets experience.
34:49Look out.
34:5030, 25, 20.
34:51Eugene Daniel will score.
34:52Touchdown, Colts.
34:53He had thrown a league-leading 35 interceptions.
35:08You know, any time you step on the field,
35:09you want to win.
35:10So anytime you lose, it makes it hard.
35:12They should have won the game.
35:14I mean, they should have blown them away.
35:19It was kind of a rocky relationship with me and the fans.
35:22It was a love-hate relationship.
35:2711.22 to go.
35:31Up the middle to William Howard.
35:33On first down.
35:35Testaverde was telling us last night, Terry asked him about his problems in seeing things
35:40and seeing a clear picture, and he told us an interesting story.
35:43He's somewhat colorblind.
35:46We were doing a game in Detroit, and Terry Bradshaw, he asked me some questions,
35:51and somehow me being colorblind came up.
35:54And trying to pack for the game today, couldn't get the coordination right.
35:58His wife had gone off to aerobics class or something, and Testaverde didn't know if things matched,
36:04so he had to call her up on the phone.
36:05She had to come home, pack his stuff, and bring it to him.
36:09This was just an anecdote.
36:10He was telling to Terry Bradshaw, it didn't have anything to do with his play on the field,
36:14but the media, the fans, and the radio stations here jumped all over it immediately.
36:21A radio station here in Tampa actually bought a billboard.
36:26They made the whole thing a field of blue, and then the word said,
36:29Vinny thinks this is orange.
36:34Back in my era, the home team always wore their dark colored jerseys,
36:38and then the away teams always wore white.
36:41As a quarterback reading a defense, you just see dark and light in the movement of those players.
36:46So it never affected me on the football field.
36:50Testaverde going to the 10, to the 5.
36:52He runs it for a touchdown.
36:53He had the most God-given talent I've ever seen for a quarterback in all my years,
37:00and young quarterbacks just throw interceptions.
37:03It's not because he's colorblind, it's because playing quarterback in the NFL is hard.
37:08Unfortunately for the Buccaneers, Vinny was exposed to Ray Perkins.
37:12Regular people.
37:13I have the utmost respect for Ray Perkins.
37:16Now, that being said, if you walk by him in the hallway on a Tuesday with nobody else in the building,
37:20he may not look at you and say hi.
37:22Everything we did was very simple.
37:24The way Ray coached in Vinny's temperament, that was not the guy for Vinny Testaverde.
37:29His first three teams each lost 11 games.
37:31The win yesterday was only the fifth for them this year.
37:35Perkins was fired today and replaced by assistant Richard Williamson.
37:37In the NFL, you can get into a spiral of change the coach, change the quarterback.
37:43After 15 losses in 19 games in just over a year, Williamson's out.
37:49After that, Sam Weich came.
37:52Sam Weich was coming from Cincinnati after he had success there,
37:57so he had the reputation coming from a winning team, but it just wasn't clicking.
38:07Vinny was just trying to survive.
38:12And I remember he said to me, what do you think I should do?
38:15I go, what do you mean?
38:16He says, should I stay?
38:17Because Vinny was being blamed for everything happening here, and it wasn't him.
38:23I thought it'd probably be best for me to change sceneries, get with a different team,
38:27and kind of just have a fresh start.
38:29Free agent Vinny Testaverde is hoping to make football fun again,
38:32but he will begin on the bench in Cleveland.
38:35I'm going to come in and compete for the job.
38:36It takes two quarterbacks a lot of the times to win the Super Bowl.
38:40You know, I hope to be a part of that, and that's why I'm here,
38:42because I think this team is ready to be in that game.
38:47Vinny went on to play 21 years in the NFL, and he had some pretty prolific seasons.
38:52Testaverde with time, throws over the middle, Johnson touchdown!
38:56Wow.
38:57Vinny Testaverde.
38:59The Buccaneers had been looking for a quarterback ever since they lost Doug Williams.
39:02Immediately after Doug Williams walked away, one failed attempt after another.
39:08This was a franchise that had 12 straight double-digit losing seasons.
39:14It really felt like everyone who ended up leaving the Bucs behind
39:18found great success with another football team.
39:21The Doug Williams curse seemed to hang over everything the Buccaneers tried to do,
39:27and it took a very long time to break it.
39:35Good afternoon from Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, California.
39:39The road the Super Bowl XXII stops right here.
39:43I wind up getting to be the head coach of the Redskins,
39:47and when the USFL folded and get Doug Williams, it became a possibility.
39:53I said, we need that guy.
39:55Doug Williams, the first black man to start at quarterback
39:59in the National Football League's Super Bowl.
40:03Huh. Couldn't take my eyes off the game.
40:05I was a big Doug Williams fan.
40:07I knew Doug was not going to fail.
40:10I watched the game, my family and I.
40:12I was a freshman in college at a Super Bowl party.
40:15I'm on the 50-yard line.
40:17And they're playing Denver.
40:18I just never liked Denver.
40:20John Elway had a lead, and I was like,
40:22this is going to be Denver Broncos' day.
40:24Slipping down is William.
40:26He's hurt.
40:26He might be hurt.
40:28It was like he did a split.
40:30It was a tough-looking thing.
40:33Did you see him twist his leg when he went down?
40:35Boy, did he have his one leg in there at an awkward angle.
40:38So here comes Schrader.
40:41I said to myself, let him take a break and make sure the trainers check him over.
40:46And so I made a decision to send Schrader in.
40:48And Doug turned to him and said, back to the sideline.
40:52This is my team.
40:54I'm staying in here.
40:56Doug got hot.
40:57They scored 35 points.
40:58And it was over, just like that.
41:00We are seeing a virtuoso performance.
41:02Most valuable player is quarterback Doug Williams of the Washington Redskins.
41:06I was there when he came off the field.
41:09I mean, I could not stop crying.
41:12I was very, very happy for him.
41:14I just remember Doug walking off the field like the world had been lifted off of his back.
41:19Talk about your moment in the sun.
41:21How much farther could we be from Tampa?
41:23How long ago that must seem to Doug Williams.
41:27To let a quality quarterback go, and then to go on and win a Super Bowl, that hurts.
41:32I don't know if it's so much, you know, a curse as it hurts.
41:38This was supposed to be my quarterback.
41:40I was supposed to be catching passes from him in the Super Bowl.
41:44I've been in the league, been playing football now for 10 years,
41:46and I just got an opportunity to get to the Super Bowl.
41:49And the most important thing to me was winning it.
41:51I was happy to see Doug Williams win the Super Bowl,
41:54but for the Bucs and all the double-digit losing.
41:58It's like, okay, how much longer is this going to go?
42:02Man, whew, that could have been us.
42:08That could have been us.
42:19Steve DeBerg, take four, Mark.
42:21Steve Spurrier, take one, Mark Cotney.
42:23Coach Gibbs, take two, Mark.
42:25In your opinion, who is the greatest Buccaneer of all time?
42:28Uh, the greatest Buccaneer of all time.
42:33It would either be Leroy Salmon or it would be Doug Williams.
42:39You can only pick one.
42:40You can't leave until you do it.
42:42Wow, greatest Buccaneer of all time.
42:48And it's not really, I really think, um, can't do it.
42:56You're going to have to keep me here.
42:58Okay, I got the easy answer for that.
43:02I'm not picking one, okay?
43:04Because there's too many people help build the Bucs.
43:08Probably Leroy Salmon.
43:10Uh, Leroy was certainly a great one.
43:13But they've had so many, uh, fantastic Hall of Fame players here.
43:18I mean, Leroy, Leroy Salmon dominated games from a defensive end part.
43:23But, um, I mean, he, he, he, he just was, Doug, yeah, I'm changing my opinion.
43:29I think it's, I think the greatest guy is Leroy Salmon.
43:32I think the greatest Tampa Bay Buccaneer player, it would be Doug Williams.
44:07Lord knows I've been crazy.
44:09Lord knows I've been wasting time.
44:10Now I'm back on my grind to make peace.
44:12Take heat, take the lead.
44:14No fairy tales, no make-believe.
44:16This the time when you make do or take the reins to tame the beast.
44:20Break the rules, we play for keeps.
44:22It's that high composition, no opposition.
44:24We back on the roads and we back to peace.
44:26Back to business, back to wonder.
44:28What's this spell that I've been under?
44:30What's the rain without the thunder?
44:32Wake up, you're not slumber.
44:33Fries and lows, I suppose.
44:38The higher you get, the lower it goes.
44:42Saving your time, saving your toes.
44:45And praying for mine, saving my soul.
44:47The higher you get, the higher you get, the higher you get, the higher you get, the higher you get, the higher you get, the higher you get, the higher you get, the higher you get, the higher you get, the higher you get, the higher you get, the higher you get.
45:00You
