00:00Unregistered point-of-sale terminals across Nigeria may soon be ceased as the federal government tightens regulation on the fintech and agents banking space.
00:11The Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, says from January 1, 2026, all POS operators must be formally registered,
00:20warning that any terminal operating outside the system risks being shut down or confiscated.
00:27The announcement made in early December also places fintech companies under scrutiny,
00:35with CAC warning that platforms enabling unregistered agents could be reported to the Central Bank of Nigeria.
00:45This is not the first time the government is raising the issue.
00:49The CAC has previously issued deadlines and extensions for POS registration,
00:54but officials say compliance has remained low, prompting this tougher enforcement.
01:02According to the Commission, the move is aimed at bringing POS operators under one regulatory umbrella,
01:09aligned with Companies and Allied Matters Act and CBN guidelines.
01:14Authorities say this will improve accountability, consumer protection, and transaction traceability,
01:21while helping to curb fraud and other financial crimes linked to unregulated terminals.
01:30With enforcement set to begin in January,
01:33POS operators and fintech firms have been urged to comply or face sanctions.
01:51POS operators and
02:00Speaks can be selected in January 1st of January 2nd of April 1st.
