00:00Makoko, Lagos waterborne community, is plagued by malaria. Residents self-diagnose and self-medicate
00:13due to the lack of access to quality health care and affordability. Patents, medicine sellers,
00:18and unregulated herbal remedies passed down through generations are the first line of care
00:24in the community. Experts say Makoko's geography creates ideal conditions for mosquito breeding.
00:32With no nearby quality health centers and limited income, formal health care feels like
00:38a luxury many cannot afford. Elizabeth Mehento, a mother of seven, treats malaria monthly without
00:46proper testing. She relies on Abo, a herbal remedy. Many others do the same in Makoko. They
01:04swallow what is familiar even if unproven. In Makoko, every headache, fever, body weakness,
01:12and high body temperature is assumed malaria. Without accessible health care, residents are
01:18left to fend for themselves. It is about to get worse even now as they lose their homes
01:24to demolitions.
