00:00You made a mistake!
00:22Braindeers, cows, any kind of animal
00:27I'll fly used to examine him with his right arm
00:32Ask her!
00:56Shhh!
00:57Look at her dad, ask her!
01:00Winnie, that's enough
01:02I'm sorry?
01:03Do you think she's Santa Claus?
01:06Maybe I am
01:14And a Merry Christmas
01:18Merry Christmas?
01:20Look, I should have got her autograph
01:22In Thirsk, preparations for the holiday season are underway
01:37But at Stonyborough Farm, Jean and Steve are working as hard as ever
01:46Go, go, go, go, go!
01:50Another year on the farm and all the animals are still to feed as usual
01:5524-7, 365 days a year
01:59Except when you've got to leave here, you've got 366
02:04Hello there!
02:06Educational strength
02:08But it's a job that's loved
02:12And you can't complain about it
02:14Hello, are you coming?
02:16I think I'm busier than ever
02:18I think I'm busier than ever
02:20Only you can always find a job on a farm
02:23Despite the workload, Jean and Steve have a spring in their step as Christmas approaches
02:31Christmas is coming, you can't beat it
02:39You can't beat a missing tall kiss
02:44Some logs with fire, Jean
02:46Oh, good on you
02:51Are you ready for Christmas, lad?
02:53Yes
02:54Do you like me earrings?
02:56Me and you are a couple of silly devils, aren't we?
02:59We are
03:01But the Greens' long-time friend and vet, Peter
03:04Isn't feeling the Christmas spirit yet
03:06Just popped round to see, er, Jean and Steve
03:10It's grey, it's miserable
03:15It's just drudgery really
03:19I feel a bit like that myself
03:21A lot of people, they'll look forward to a couple of weeks off
03:25Over the Christmas period
03:27It's never like that for vets
03:29We just have to keep working
03:31We're lucky sometimes if we could have Christmas dinner in peace
03:35And it's just how it is really
03:38But er, we'll go and see what Mrs. Green has to say about it
03:43Hello
03:44Oh, young man, how are you?
03:46Hello, Peter
03:47I'll tell you over a cup of tea
03:50I'll just put kettle on
03:52Just a tiny milk pager at the bottom
03:56Right-o, Jean
03:57Can I say too much?
04:02Yes
04:03It's a bit down in dust
04:04What you've been doing?
04:05Sucking sour lemons
04:07Have you?
04:10Do you know you've cheered me up a bit already
04:12Well, last year, I thoroughly enjoyed helping you get ready for Christmas
04:19This year, I just cannot get motivated
04:23I just can't be bothered
04:25I'm going to have to give thee a kick up butt
04:28Well, that's maybe what I need, Mrs. Green
04:31I've seen a nappy-looking blowdown
04:34The way you look
04:35I want you to try and get me motivated
04:37Come on
04:38You're not sucking sour lemons up my house, young man
04:42Thanks for dropping by in the beard for me shortly
04:45I'll look forward to it
04:46Aye, aye, don't worry
04:48Thank you very much
04:50I'm going to set things in motion
04:52I can't have this
04:54No way
04:56Jose
05:00Hello Moses
05:02Hello
05:03Jean's now on a mission
05:04And she's taking her festive spirit inspiration
05:07From a memorable line in the classic Christmas film
05:10Miracle on 34th Street
05:13We're all so busy these days
05:15We forget Christmas
05:17It isn't a day, it's a frame of mind
05:21And she knows that across the town
05:23There are like-minded souls
05:24Who can be her little helpers in spreading the joy
05:28First up, it's the animals
05:30They need some treats
05:31And they have somebody in mind
05:33That'll give me an hand
05:41So, with no time to lose
05:42Today, Jean's taking Peter to a local school
05:45Who are expecting a visit from some therapy dogs
05:48I do a lot for community
05:51And I want to give them some treats for Christmas
05:54That's typical of you, Mrs Green
05:55Well, today, it's rather nice
05:58That the animals are getting treats
06:00Rather than your vet, really
06:02If I hadn't eaten as many of your sweets as I have done
06:05I'd have a lot thinner waste now
06:07Well, you've got an old grass figure, haven't you?
06:10I don't think so
06:11Hello
06:14Hello everybody
06:15Hello
06:17Nice to meet you both
06:19This is Faye, this is Maria
06:20Hi
06:21And I'm Wendy
06:22But you're probably more interested in our dogs
06:23Oh yes
06:24So we've got Tom
06:25We've got Lola
06:26And we've got Alf
06:27Who's aboard a Collie
06:29Oh Alfie, lovely little Alfie, aren't you?
06:33What do you do here at the school?
06:35We sit and we read with the children
06:37And the dogs will sit down
06:38Because it's known that when you stroke a dog
06:39You two will know stroking a dog is the most relaxing thing in the world
06:43It is incredible
06:44Yes, it is, it's very, very powerful
06:47I find it fantastic
06:49And it's a good job what you ladies do
06:52Thank you, Jean
06:53And we're proud on you
06:54Yeah, we've got you some Christmas sweets, eh, young?
06:56Oh, that'd be nice
06:57Oh, that'd be good, won't you?
06:58Oh, that'd be good, won't you?
06:59Come on, Lou
07:00Come on, then
07:01Off we go
07:03The children are starting to think about Christmas treats, too
07:07We are going to write our letter to Santa
07:11Now, do you think you are on the nice list or the naughty list?
07:16Nice list
07:17Have you been good this year?
07:19Oh, my goodness!
07:22Who is this?
07:23Hello, everybody
07:25Hi!
07:26Hello
07:27Hi, kids
07:28Hi, Jean
07:29Hi
07:30Thumbs up
07:31We brought some special friends to see you today
07:33We have brought Tom, Lola, and Alf
07:38We're going to do something very special this afternoon
07:40Are you up for it?
07:41Yes!
07:42Yes!
07:46Coming up
07:47You're having problems, I understand, aren't Peter?
07:49The Grotto reindeer know Peter isn't Santa
07:52No, excuse me
07:54Hey, hey, hey, hey
07:56But Steve's hoping that Jean is
07:58Now, what do you want for Christmas?
08:01Oh, I can... I'll tell you what I want
08:03What?
08:16In Thirsk, Jean Green is on a mission to remind her friend and vet, Peter, about the magic of Christmas
08:23So this is Alf
08:24So this is Alf
08:25This is my dog
08:26He's nine years old
08:28So he is older than you, isn't he?
08:31So she's brought him to a local school
08:33Where Wendy's introducing the children to her therapy dogs
08:36He loves old people and young people
08:39Do you know the one thing he doesn't like?
08:41Oh, wow
08:42And I hope Peter won't be upset
08:44He doesn't like going to the vet for his injection
08:46I can't understand that, Wendy
08:50I think you heard that
08:52Hello, everybody
08:53Hi
08:54Hi
08:55This is Lola
08:56Hello
08:57Elsie, do you want to meet Lola and give her a little stroke?
09:00Oh, amazing
09:02Oh, the kids are finding it very well
09:05They're enjoying every bit of it, so am I
09:08What do you think she'd like to eat?
09:10Dog food
09:11Just dog food
09:12Do you not think she likes special treats?
09:14Yeah
09:15Oh, I think she would like special treats
09:16She loves special treats
09:19And when it comes to special treats, Jean has it covered
09:24Fifteen-year-old Amelia lives just up the road from the Greens with Mum, Sally
09:28And her two assistance dogs, Lotus and Jasmine
09:31Let us sit
09:33Yes
09:34Let's go
09:35Amelia has been through some tough times in her life, twice recovering from leukaemia
09:43Good boy, Lola
09:44She's a different person when she's around the dogs
09:47She's so happy and they help support her, give her confidence, help to walk again, basically
09:54So, yeah, they've just been a tremendous help
09:57Come on then
09:58Can I see it this way?
10:00Amelia's love of dogs gave her an idea
10:03Homemade dog treats
10:05I started making them as I was on immunotherapy because of my leukaemia
10:13And I would sell them around the neighbourhood and give them to my friends' dogs
10:19It was a very fun hobby, it helped me stay calm and it made me happy
10:25And her latest batch has been ordered by Jean
10:29We are making cheese and sweet potato dog biscuits
10:36It is a favourite of Lotus and Jasmine's, definitely
10:40So the first thing we need to do is your egg
10:43It's always Amelia's go-to pastime
10:48It's something that she enjoys, it makes her happy
10:52I'd say that looks good
10:56Mm-hmm
10:57So proud of Amelia
10:58Yeah, everyone always says she's the bravest person they know
11:02She really is
11:03What she's achieved and what she's been through
11:06Oh, yes
11:07They look good
11:09And after a positive taste test
11:12I'd say that's a success for both of them
11:15They've both inhaled them very quickly
11:19Jean's friend heads over to the school
11:23Hello Amelia
11:25Hello
11:26How are you?
11:27I'm all right, how are you?
11:29I'm holding the orange
11:31I've got some more dog treats to give to the therapy dogs
11:34Oh, wow
11:36You want more for Lola?
11:38Lola
11:40Can you do it?
11:41These are delicious Amelia, thank you from Lola
11:44I think Lola likes them
11:46I think Lola loves them
11:47Jacob, just smell it those
11:50Mmm
11:51Smell nice, don't they?
11:53I don't quite know what the recipe of these homemade treats are
11:58But they've certainly got everybody's attention, particularly the dogs
12:03I'm not hungry
12:04Merry Christmas
12:13Merry Christmas to you all
12:15We wish you a Merry Christmas
12:20We wish you a Merry Christmas
12:22And a Happy New Year
12:27Thank you, that was absolutely fantastic.
12:30I would like to join in, but neither of us can sing very well.
12:33We certainly couldn't compete with your voices there.
12:36Merry Christmas!
12:49Back at Stonyborough Farm, our jeans focused on Christmas present.
12:53Nice time when the farm starts taking shape for Christmas.
13:00Out in the calf house, Steve's missing Christmas past.
13:06This'll be the first Christmas that there's been no calves in here.
13:14I've been on the farm 81 years, and I've never seen it empty.
13:19It really gets to you.
13:28Let me scrub my old bag.
13:32I think it's coming together well, Jane.
13:36Oh, it's not bad for them.
13:38It is, it's looking good.
13:40Yeah, you can't get up and give us an hand.
13:43Oh, I can't get up, I'll have to shift cards.
13:47Well, that's not bad for you.
13:48I'm sorry, but, er...
13:51I'd like...
13:53I am...
13:55Right, now come and sit on me knee.
13:58Come on.
14:00Now, what do you want for Christmas?
14:03Oh, I'll tell you what I want.
14:05What?
14:06What?
14:07A couple of calves.
14:09You what?
14:11A couple of calves.
14:13Do you want them different?
14:15Yeah.
14:16What?
14:18You want to push it both out, aren't you?
14:20Maybe.
14:21I know what I want for Christmas.
14:24With two front teeth.
14:26You, me, Sarah, and the cats and dog.
14:32We've got you lot, I'm happy.
14:35Christmas is made.
14:37Merry Christmas.
14:39Hi, Merry Christmas to you, Jane.
14:41And a snappy new year.
14:44Ah, yeah.
14:51While Peter hasn't really been feeling the Christmas spirit so far,
14:55up on the North York Moors, farmer Rebecca has a job for him.
14:59Bush girl. Hey, my boy. How are you doing, lad?
15:02That might just help save it.
15:05So, in here, we've got ten reindeer all together.
15:08They're all friendly and curious and inquisitive.
15:12And they're real characters.
15:14Every Christmas, these reindeer take centre stage in a garden centre grotto.
15:18We have a really, really big pen for them there.
15:21They love it. They sort of strut around and, you know,
15:24the people love to come and see them.
15:27But, sadly, one member of the herd recently passed away from a mystery illness.
15:32So, Rebecca is worried about the others.
15:35The whole herd's healthy at the moment,
15:38but we want to make sure there's nothing underlying
15:40that could cause issues further down the line.
15:43You're having problems, I understand, aren't you, Peter?
15:46Yes. Hi, I'm Rebecca. Nice to meet you.
15:48Nice to meet you. Yeah.
15:50Can we have a quick look at them?
15:51Yeah, absolutely.
15:53This is a very interesting situation, really.
15:59That's it. Good, lass. Good, lass.
16:06I'm going to take some bloods and have a look
16:09and see if we can work out what's going on here.
16:12All right.
16:14All right.
16:16All right.
16:18Trying to hold a salmon.
16:20Have you got enough?
16:22Probably not.
16:24Probably not.
16:26You don't like it, do you?
16:28It's not nice, is it?
16:34Might have enough there.
16:36Yep.
16:37No.
16:38Let her go.
16:40Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
16:41You've done a marvellous job.
16:42Good, lass.
16:43Right, you go when you can.
16:45Right, now you can go off.
16:46Good, lass.
16:47There you go.
16:49Well, we're doing OK so far,
16:51and I think it's down to Rebecca as well,
16:54who has a very calming influence.
16:56In fact, at one point there, I nearly went to sleep myself.
16:59Would it help if I came in there or not?
17:01Good, lass. We got you.
17:02Well, well done.
17:03Good, lass.
17:05Come on. Good, girl.
17:07She's getting fractious, isn't she?
17:09Hey, hey, hey, hey.
17:12No, no, no, no, no.
17:15Good, lass.
17:18Good, girl.
17:21There's a little Purdy poo.
17:24Excellent. Well done.
17:26Good, girl. Off you go.
17:27Well done.
17:28There you go, Purdy.
17:29Touch and go at the sap, what have we got there?
17:31It is real well.
17:33As I say, I nearly fell asleep.
17:34Your words were so assuming.
17:40We've got the samples that we need,
17:41and I think they've seen this strange man arrive
17:44that's stuck needle into various necks,
17:46and I think they're all relieved that the ordeal's done.
17:51Thanks, Rebecca.
17:52That's all right, thank you.
17:53Well done for the Australian so well.
17:55I'm very impressed,
17:56and I'll head back now with these samples,
17:58and I'll be in touch to let you know what's supposed to happen.
18:00That's good, yeah.
18:01Well, thank you very much.
18:03Thank you very much.
18:04Thanks, bye.
18:05Bye-bye.
18:06If his reindeer rescue mission has Peter feeling a bit more in the mood...
18:16Come on.
18:17Let's go and get in the Christmas spirit.
18:19Well, what have you got in mind?
18:21We're going to go and find out. Come on.
18:25Today, Jean's looking for an explosion of festive fun.
18:29The yam bombs are in here.
18:31We're going to get you sorted out ready for Christmas.
18:34First's famous knitting group have regularly bombed the town
18:38with their colourful displays,
18:40so the Yarn Bombers and Jean have a big yuletide plan.
18:45You're full of good ideas, aren't you?
18:47Well, I'm winning for a shilling.
18:49Well, I'll risk it for a biscuit.
18:54Hello, Jeanie. Hello, Peter.
18:55Have you come to lend a hand?
18:57Yeah, but...
18:58I don't know what I'm doing here, but...
18:59Well, you've joined a very, very special Yarn Bombing session.
19:02We're making Christmas decorations.
19:08Right, Jeanie, do you want to come and sit over here with Sylvia?
19:11Aye, I'll take me young Sylvia.
19:14Peter, would you like to sit here? We've got Rachel here.
19:17You've certainly got your work cut out,
19:18because I'd be useless at this sort of thing.
19:20Oh, I shouldn't be fine.
19:21Oh, I shouldn't be fine.
19:22Right, Jean, we are going to make a cat.
19:24A moggy?
19:25A moggy.
19:26Just like the one next door to you, yes?
19:29Right, this is what we're going to be making these.
19:32I've started this one off for you.
19:34Right.
19:35Because the hardest bit is getting started.
19:38Well, what worried me is the middle bit and the end bit.
19:40So, as a vet, you shouldn't find this too hard.
19:45Stitching must come fairly easily to you.
19:47Is that it? No.
19:48No.
19:49No.
19:50Oh, you missed.
19:52So, I'm on there for one arm,
19:55up there for the other arm.
19:57Oh, dear, straight up the middle.
19:59Oh!
20:01For the legs.
20:02Poor Ginger Tom.
20:05This Christmas tree won't be ready for this Christmas, Jean,
20:07but I'm working on it.
20:13My nerves are shattered sitting at that table,
20:15trying to crochet,
20:17so I need to have a bit of a break, really.
20:19Would you like to do tea?
20:20I'd like to do gin and tonic, please.
20:28All the way through.
20:30Do it.
20:31While Peter's feeling the pressure...
20:33So, we're going to wiggle it up
20:34so it looks like a Christmas tree shape.
20:36Yeah.
20:37Sort of a triangle.
20:39Jean's a cool cat.
20:41Everybody, she's finished her cat!
20:43Whee!
20:47That was lovely.
20:49...and eventually, Peter's tree...
20:51I think this is not looking too bad at all.
20:53...goes down a bomb.
20:55Whee!
20:56It's up! It's up! It's up!
21:04Well, this doesn't get you Christmas,
21:06but it's going to help with it.
21:07I'll tell you what, Jean, it certainly helped this morning.
21:09Not only with making these things,
21:11but it's seeing how happy everybody is here.
21:14Yeah.
21:15And if people are happy round about you,
21:16it cheers you up, doesn't it?
21:17Yeah.
21:18I think I'm getting into the festive spirit now.
21:20Good! It's about time, too.
21:22Coming up...
21:27Hello!
21:28Hello!
21:29...for the good of thirst,
21:31in hard times...
21:32One of the things I really love
21:34is that you can bring your pet in
21:37to visit you.
21:38...and happy ones.
21:39Peter!
21:40Man's got my wonder garments.
21:43I wonder why Father Christmas had a smile on his face.
21:55At Stonyborough Farm,
21:56as the Greens hope for another magical Christmas...
21:59I'll just get my best friend here.
22:02...Steve is still feeling sad
22:04that he has no little friends in the calf house.
22:07It's what I've had cards in.
22:09It makes you feel sad when you come into an empty building.
22:14But I miss them awfully.
22:17Gene misses them, too.
22:19I should do it.
22:23But doing her bit to craft some Christmas spirit...
22:26They are finishing touches the Christmas tree.
22:30Gene has welcomed some new animals
22:32that she knitted with Thirsk's Yarn Bombers.
22:35Where?
22:36Don't you in the muggy?
22:37Perfect!
22:38And although her friend, Peter,
22:41seems to have stopped believing in Christmas miracles,
22:44the town does have something special
22:46to be thankful for this year.
22:48A new hospice
22:50that carries the name of his veterinary mentor.
22:53We're here today at Hoagate Hospice,
22:55and we're here to celebrate the opening of the place,
22:59and it's probably one of the best Christmas presents
23:01that Thirst could have.
23:03It's a charity close to Peter's heart,
23:05and he did his bit to raise money for the project.
23:09There's only one word to describe this.
23:11Brutal.
23:13With a 170-mile coast-to-coast bike ride.
23:17Yay!
23:18Well done!
23:22Good to see you!
23:23But today's grand opening should be much less gruelling.
23:33Hello!
23:34Hello!
23:35Well, this is where it's all happening.
23:37Yes, yes.
23:41Do you mind if I join you?
23:42No, of course.
23:43Nice to see you.
23:44It doesn't just serve the people of Thirst.
23:50It serves what's become affectionately known as Herriot Country.
23:55And Alf White James Herriot's name was synonymous with that area.
24:00And to see it open now, I think, with his name to it,
24:05I think he would wholeheartedly approve of where we are today.
24:09Alf's daughter Rosie is the hospice's patron,
24:12and she's giving Peter a very different tour...
24:15Tony.
24:16See you, Peter.
24:17Nice to see you as well.
24:18..to the one he received when the project was in its early stages.
24:22Family's loved ones will be able to come in here
24:24and see them at pretty much any time.
24:27Any time.
24:31Oh, well, here we are, Pete.
24:32Look at it now, eh?
24:33All the furniture in.
24:35A bit different from when I was here last week.
24:37It was a building site.
24:39I mean, it is state-of-the-art,
24:40and one of the things I really love,
24:42being a very doggy woman, as you know,
24:44is that you can bring your pet in to visit you.
24:48It's what I refer to as the power of animals.
24:50Oh, yeah.
24:51They're a phenomenal power of us, and they can do so much good.
24:54That's a fact that has never been lost on Jean,
24:57who's on her way with Steve.
25:00I'm sure she's got something up her sleeves today.
25:03She's certainly one that likes to celebrate Christmas,
25:06and she can only do it in true green fashion.
25:10So God only knows what's going to happen today.
25:13And the greens do have a surprise
25:16to add a four-legged festive feel to the special day.
25:20Well, we've heard about the event,
25:22and Pete has invited us down.
25:24We want to pay a bit back to Thurston
25:27and raise a Christmas spirit for everybody.
25:30Hey, young man.
25:32Good afternoon.
25:33It's good of you to come.
25:34We thought we'd bring you some of it.
25:41Hello, Sybil.
25:42Hello, Sybil.
25:43Sybil!
25:44Hello, Phil.
25:46Peter, can you get her out,
25:48and we'll take a seat in there.
25:49I certainly can.
25:50But there's one thing I've got to say to you.
25:52What's that?
25:53Don't make a nasty, you said.
25:54I'll do my best, Mrs Green.
25:56Oh, look at the donkey!
25:59Aw!
26:04Good girl.
26:05Come and meet you in public, Sybil.
26:08Yes.
26:09Oh, look.
26:10Have you brought a cake, dear?
26:12I haven't.
26:13Oh, well, you may as well go away, then.
26:17Quite good we can bring animals here, Peter.
26:20Isn't it fantastic?
26:21It is.
26:22Donkeys and Christmas go together, don't they?
26:24They do.
26:25Oh, you can't beat a donkey at Christmas now, can you?
26:28No, no.
26:29And especially one like Sybil.
26:31Aye.
26:32How could anybody fail to love Sybil?
26:34Away in a manger, no crib for bed.
26:44We couldn't have opened the hospice in better style than we have this afternoon.
26:50I want Jean to come around and Steve and Sybil has made a huge difference to me personally, as well as everybody else here.
26:57And bid us for heaven to live with thee there.
27:12Back at work at the practice in Kirby Moorside, Peter's hoping for more positive news about some other Christmassy creatures.
27:21While certain reindeer are used to a white-haired gentleman with a jolly laugh.
27:25Right.
27:26Rebecca's garden centre grotto gang didn't seem too happy when Peter took some blood samples.
27:33Might have enough there.
27:35Yeah.
27:36No.
27:37Let it go.
27:38To see if the herd is healthy after one of them passed away.
27:43So what we have found on the final report is that there's a toxin been identified associated with a particularly nasty infection.
27:56This is a serious problem.
27:58So what we need to do now, we need to ensure that these animals in the herd are now protected.
28:06And so we're going to vaccinate them to make sure this doesn't happen again.
28:12So Peter's headed back up to the moors.
28:16You're back here.
28:17Hello.
28:18Hello.
28:19Hello again.
28:20How are you?
28:21I'm very well, thanks.
28:22Are you feeling strong?
28:23Yeah, I'm fairly strong.
28:24Yeah, I had a smooch this morning.
28:26Excellent.
28:27Well, we'll crack on then and get them done.
28:28Brilliant.
28:30Rebecca's daughter, Megan, has come to help with the vaccinations.
28:33Come on.
28:34Oh, good little so-and-so.
28:37They know what it means when a vet comes.
28:40Nothing nice happens when we arrive, does it?
28:42No, it never does.
28:44But while some of the herd are happy to cooperate.
28:47Good man.
28:49What have you done?
28:51Good boy.
28:53Others aren't quite so keen.
28:54We just have the cow and the calf now to do.
28:59OK.
29:00Yeah, all right then.
29:01Cow and the calf together.
29:02Yeah.
29:03Ooh, yes.
29:04Lovely.
29:05Ooh, yes.
29:06I've got calf.
29:07Ooh, yes.
29:09Got her.
29:10Ooh, yes.
29:11Right.
29:12Do you want to do the calf first and then I can help?
29:13Yep, yes.
29:14I'll just...
29:15Are you all right there, Les?
29:16Yeah.
29:17Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
29:20Hang on.
29:21I'll just rearrange hold.
29:22Well done.
29:23You're doing all right there.
29:25All right.
29:26Full of beans.
29:27Typical child, really.
29:29She's so cheeky.
29:30She's really curious.
29:32And sometimes if I'm putting the feed in and putting the bag down,
29:34she comes over and batters the bag.
29:35All right, lovely.
29:36Done.
29:37One more.
29:38All right.
29:39Yeah.
29:40Whoa.
29:41Go cook, like it.
29:50Have you ever played rugby?
29:51Because I think you'd be very good, you know.
29:57Right.
29:58Go on there.
29:59Right.
30:00Leave the leg on the back end, please.
30:01Yeah, I am.
30:02Right.
30:03You come through in the front.
30:04Oh, Les.
30:06Ooh.
30:08Lovely.
30:09After all that.
30:10That didn't take long, did it, Les?
30:11Well done.
30:12Thank you very much.
30:13That was very impressive.
30:14Well, it wasn't, because I let it go.
30:16Well, I'm still very impressed.
30:17I'd have let it go a long time before you did.
30:19Oh, dear.
30:20Well, I'm pleased that's done, because it's the same family as botulism.
30:24Right.
30:25The nasty ones, yeah, yeah.
30:26The nasty ones, yeah, yeah.
30:27They are nasty.
30:28Yeah.
30:29Yeah.
30:30So, Rachel's reindeer are now grotto ready.
30:33We've got to make sure that these reindeer are in tip-top condition before Santa calls,
30:39because it's no good having poorly reindeers, otherwise you're going to have a lot of miserable
30:43children this Christmas with no presents.
30:45Back down in Thirsk, Jean's mission, Operation Joyful Christmas, has reached its next phase.
31:01The troops have arrived.
31:02Right, ladies, off we go.
31:04Come on, then.
31:06To yarn-bomb the town.
31:09Here we go.
31:11Hey, that's brilliant.
31:13Hey!
31:14Hey!
31:15Hey!
31:16Hey!
31:17Hey!
31:18Good morning.
31:19Good morning, folks.
31:20Morning, you youngsters.
31:21You're looking a bit precarious up there with Frosty the Snowman in your arms, aren't you?
31:25I know.
31:26Where's he going?
31:27He's going on top of this flower tower.
31:29Oh.
31:30You should have a safety net round here.
31:32Right.
31:33There he goes.
31:34All the way on.
31:35Oh.
31:36Oh, yeah.
31:37Come on, little Frosty.
31:38Out!
31:39On the Chimper Pass.
31:40It's given tears in Peter's eyes.
31:42Keep pulling.
31:43Keep pulling.
31:44Keep pulling.
31:45Keep pulling.
31:46I never was any good at pulling.
31:49That's tight.
31:50Thank you very much.
31:51Lovely.
31:54This chap, he's got a lovely little smiley face there, hasn't he?
31:57He's just like you.
31:58I wouldn't go that far.
32:00Read in for the Christmas.
32:03I'm just arranging this lady.
32:05I think it's rather nice, don't you?
32:07Peter.
32:08Mine's got my wonder garment.
32:10I wonder why Father Christmas had a smile on his face.
32:14After feeling a bit woolly-minded about Christmas until recently, Peter's now smiling too.
32:20It's lovely to see thirst being transformed into Christmas.
32:23And the people that's doing it, everybody's got a smile on their face.
32:26Everybody's enjoying what they're doing.
32:28And there's a great pride taken in all this.
32:30It's just lovely for me to be part of it.
32:33And from his day with the knitting group, he even has a little bomb of his own to drop.
32:38Hello.
32:39Hello, Irene.
32:40Hello, Peter.
32:41Hello there.
32:42I've got my work of art.
32:43There was a lot went into that.
32:44I know.
32:45I saw the pain.
32:46The pain, the blood, the sweat, the tears.
32:49The tears.
32:50It was all there.
32:51What about hanging it from the world of James Hurriot's side?
32:54And one of them in the tree, do you think?
32:56One of them in the tree, yeah.
32:57Yeah.
32:58I'll stand here, Jane, while you hop up there and put it on, all right?
33:01Yeah, you've got no chance.
33:07Hey!
33:08Well done, Peter!
33:13Still to come.
33:14Hi, kids.
33:15I'm really, really sorry.
33:17Emergency centre.
33:19Where do we help us?
33:21And secret centre.
33:23I think we need to go in and have a look.
33:26What do you want to stay?
33:31Christmas is just around the corner.
33:32And it's a Christmas Jean's been keen to make extra special by helping local people and animals.
33:46But she's not forgotten her number one person.
33:49Steve, you haven't been missed out on a Merry Christmas.
33:54Oh, thanks, dear.
33:55You'd better have a look.
33:57Take it out.
33:59Oof.
34:00Wow, what a beauty.
34:02Well, I thought you needed a new best friend.
34:06And I hope you like him.
34:08He's a nice one, isn't he?
34:09Well, he is not.
34:10He's a beauty, isn't he?
34:11What's in the mind, John?
34:13You're the best friend.
34:15It's like robin'.
34:16Thank you, Jane.
34:17I love it.
34:18I do.
34:19Hiya.
34:21You'll have to keep him fed and watered.
34:22I will.
34:23And remember, he has to go walking.
34:24I might just take it for a spin.
34:25Hiya.
34:26I will.
34:27It's just right, Len.
34:28It's just right, Len.
34:29We're just too old, fellas.
34:30Old for a walk.
34:32Ha-ha-ha.
34:33It's just right, Len.
34:38It's just right, Len.
34:44You get some sticks, it's too long, like.
34:48This is just right, Len.
34:50We're just too old, fellas.
34:55Old for a walk.
35:00It makes me happy when I see him happy.
35:03Oh, he's the love of me life.
35:09Away from their farm, Steve and Jean's happiest place is Whitby,
35:13the Yorkshire seaside town in which Steve grew up,
35:16where today Rachel's reindeer, who were treated by Peter,
35:20are making their annual Christmas appearance
35:22at a garden centre grotto.
35:25Hi, Teddy! Hi, Teddy!
35:28Which has given Peter, who had been feeling a bit like Scrooge this year,
35:32an idea.
35:34Jean has really got into the Christmas spirit this year.
35:37She's done an awful lot for the animals round Thirsk
35:40and the people as well.
35:42She's certainly joined in with great gusto.
35:45Beautiful, isn't it?
35:48And so I think it would be rather nice if I repaid that a bit, really,
35:52and give her a bit of a treat today.
35:55Hey, you, ma'am.
35:58Why, you frightened me to death.
36:00What brings you out to this neck of the woods?
36:02Well, I know you're really into Christmas this year, Mrs Green,
36:05so there's a couple of reindeers that I haven't met before
36:07and I'd like you to meet them.
36:09You've got yourself organising into spirit now?
36:12I have, thanks to you, yeah.
36:14It's about time to.
36:16Come on, let's go and have a look at these reindeer.
36:23Jean, Steve, I'd like to introduce you to Rebecca.
36:26Nice to meet you.
36:28So how have the reindeer been since I last started?
36:32A lot better, thank you.
36:33Well, they do actually look in superb condition.
36:36Yeah.
36:37Because obviously it's a busy time of year for them.
36:39It's very busy.
36:40I mean, they've got all this
36:41and then they have to go off on the 24th and help Santa.
36:44So, yeah.
36:45Do you think a couple on the farm would be good?
36:47Maybe.
36:48They'd take a bit of looking after, though, wouldn't they?
36:50You wouldn't get tangled up with those horns, would you?
36:52Where's Rudolph?
36:54Rudolph, he's got a bit of cold.
36:56He said he wasn't coming in today.
36:58His nose is quite red.
37:00He's got the nipples.
37:05While we're at the garden centre,
37:06shall we go and have a bit of a wander round?
37:08It's like an Aladdin's cave in there.
37:10Let's go and have a look and see.
37:11Oh, come on, then.
37:12All right, then.
37:17With excited children heading to the grotto.
37:20What do you think of these peas?
37:22Santa with his sledge,
37:23he just needs somebody to pull it, doesn't he?
37:25Yeah.
37:26He's had too many mid-space.
37:27Suddenly, there's a full-on Christmas crisis.
37:32Hi, kids.
37:33I'm really, really sorry.
37:34Santa's pool is here, so, unfortunately,
37:36we're unable to open the grotto.
37:40Hey, Peter.
37:42What do you think?
37:44That's terrible.
37:45There's got to be an awful lot of disappointed children.
37:48Old mystic.
37:57It's absolutely perfect.
38:12Hello, pal.
38:13Where do we help us?
38:16Just be a bit more patient, Father Christmas.
38:18Oh, God.
38:19She's looking a bit fierce.
38:21Right, let's get started.
38:23Be good, Steve.
38:24Be good, Steve.
38:25Otherwise, we don't father Christmas giving us a sack,
38:27do we?
38:28Do you get it?
38:29Give us a sack.
38:30Hello, little girl.
38:36What's your name?
38:38It's Christina.
38:39What's yours?
38:41You call me Jane, Santa Claus, or Saint Nicholas.
38:46And what would you like for Christmas?
38:48I'd like a soft, cuddly teddy bear.
38:51You would?
38:52Yeah.
38:53Oh, we'll have to see if we can find them.
38:56If not, you would have to go by the big fish shop in town
39:02and to the toy shop there and see if they have one.
39:07Thanks, Santa.
39:09Merry Christmas.
39:10Merry Christmas.
39:11Father Christmas has sent Christina to another toy shop.
39:16I see.
39:17Won't go down well here, will it?
39:18It won't.
39:26Hello, son.
39:27How are you?
39:28I'm sorry.
39:29You might struggle.
39:30He only speaks Broad Yorkshire.
39:32You don't have to speak to him.
39:34He just wanted to see you.
39:35Hear me, lad.
39:37Just a bit to see thee.
39:39How do you?
39:40I knew he'd get me.
39:41I'm champion.
39:42What's the name?
39:44Peter.
39:45He's called Peter.
39:47And he's a proper North Yorkshire lad.
39:49Oh, yeah.
39:50And what do you want for Christmas?
39:52Not really.
39:53Me dad's a farmer.
39:55Maybe a fodder for tannels.
39:57But a fodder for tannels?
39:59I'll see what I can do.
40:02Merry Christmas.
40:03To our Santa.
40:04Merry Christmas.
40:06Have you been a good little girl?
40:07To our Santa's coming.
40:08Ho, ho, ho.
40:09Now, would you like the feet?
40:10Yes, please.
40:11How do you want her?
40:12Thumbs up.
40:13Mrs Green has far surpassed my expectations of her standing as Father Christmas.
40:17I think she's done a fantastic job.
40:18I'll have one more.
40:19Little treat.
40:20Up my sleeve for her.
40:21So I'm just going to sneak off now.
40:22Deal with it.
40:23Then it's coming.
40:24So I'm just going to sneak off now.
40:25The day does come in, So the Santa's coming.
40:29Oh, ho, ho, ho.
40:30Back in Thirsk, now fully feeling the joys of Christmas and inspired by a belief in miracles
40:31here on Stony Breath.
40:32The story is not here, what I should have ever seen.
40:33It's over.
40:34It's over.
40:35It's over.
40:36It's over.
40:37It's over.
40:38So it's over.
40:39It's over.
40:40It's over.
40:41It's over.
40:42It's over.
40:43It's over.
40:44Back in Thirsk, now fully feeling the joys of Christmas and inspired by a belief in miracles here on Stony Brough Lane,
40:54Peter's next treat for Santa Jean beats a mince pie and a glass of sherry.
41:01Local schoolchildren, along with everyone else in the town who she's helped to make this a magical Christmas,
41:08have come to give the farm a festive makeover.
41:12Peter and Jean came to help us out with some Christmas decorations and then Peter gave me a ring and said,
41:18could we do something for the Greens so that they've got something lovely around the farm?
41:24We wanted to come back to the Greens and pay them back for their generosity and support to the local community with everybody else.
41:33It's brilliant to see everybody here today. Everything's come together and we're decorating the yard for them coming home shortly and I can't wait to see their faces.
41:42Welcome back, you two.
41:46Loyal man, what are you doing in this knackered wood?
41:49Well, I've got a bit of a surprise where you have some people here that's come to see you.
41:53Oh, my magic.
41:54Come on in.
41:58Surprise!
41:59Merry Christmas!
42:02Thank you!
42:04Bodine, is that a lovely surprise for you or what?
42:07You're always going to look up your ruddy sleeve, you're like me.
42:11And this Christmas, Peter has two more things up his sleeve for Jean and Steve.
42:17I'd like you to follow me.
42:21I know you're into the Christmas festivities already, but at the same time, there's just something been missing as far as I can see.
42:30Well, what is it then?
42:31Well, I think we need to go in and have a look.
42:38What do you reckon, Steve?
42:40Wow.
42:45Calf House looks well again, doesn't it, now?
42:47Yeah, it does.
42:49He's outbroughton.
42:52Honour for us, really.
42:54They're yours, Steve.
42:55They're yours.
42:56So you can both have a very happy Christmas now.
42:59Thank you very much.
