00:00In the heart of glorious North Yorkshire, just outside the historic market town of Thirsk,
00:07sits Stony Brough Farm, home to Jean and Steve Green.
00:12Hello, girls!
00:15Side by side for nearly 50 years, in his mid-90s, Steve's one of the oldest working farmers
00:23in the country.
00:24And while times are changing, always there to help, is their long-time vet and friend,
00:46Peter Wright.
00:50During these golden years, this couple of proud Yorkshire rare breeds...
00:55I'm Yorkshire born and bred, but I'm in the arm and thick in the head.
01:00...love to embrace their heritage.
01:02This is a deed from 1706.
01:04Oh!
01:05Marvelous, isn't it, Pete?
01:07...while still moving with the times.
01:09Wow!
01:10She's got it into her head that she would like it to, too.
01:13I'm thinking I'm for her.
01:15As the adventures continue...
01:17What a thrill, eh?
01:19...on this family farm like no other.
01:22Welcome to the ghost hunt!
01:24Oh, wow!
01:25Don't panic, I'm here to hold your hand!
01:28...at home with the greens.
01:31Farming in North Yorkshire has changed immeasurably since the early 1940s.
01:47Steve!
01:48No, I'm ready, Jane.
01:49Right?
01:50Yeah.
01:51Which is when Steve Green moved to Stony Brough Farm in Thirsk with his family.
01:56That's it.
01:57Got it!
01:58He's lived here with Jean since they married in 1978.
02:03And with their lifetime of memories.
02:08You know, I didn't know I had that.
02:11I did not know I had that.
02:13Steve and Jean are proud of their Yorkshire heritage.
02:17Well, that was my grandfather's that.
02:20It's been handy, hasn't it?
02:23It would have been out there, you know.
02:26It would.
02:27It takes me back a long way of that.
02:30When I was just starting school, is that?
02:34When I was about five or six.
02:36I just like to rummage among them sometimes.
02:39It reminds me of the past.
02:41It does.
02:42It does.
02:43Hey, look.
02:44Steve's 21st birthday cat.
02:48Steve!
02:49Steve!
02:50Come and see this.
02:53All right.
02:54Yeah, well, what do you got?
02:57Your 21st birthday cat.
03:01It's nice about the water glass.
03:05I like them in this, isn't it?
03:07Oh, that's...
03:09What's that one?
03:10Oh, it's at Robin Hood's Bear Agricultural Show.
03:14That's me and us.
03:16Me, lad.
03:17Ha!
03:18My mother, she's walking.
03:20Can I have a lump, please?
03:22I, you can.
03:23She ought to...
03:24Can I be a nebby?
03:25My mother used to ride behind me.
03:29We'd come nine miles without us.
03:35The cross desk.
03:36Oh, she's in beautiful condition.
03:38The Greens' friend, Peter...
03:40Oh, thank you, dear.
03:41...is also feeling reflective.
03:44As I sit here, looking across those few fields,
03:47and just about see the house I was born in.
03:50You've never really wanted to leave Yorkshire, have you?
03:53Why would I?
03:54There's everything here.
03:55Everything I could possibly want.
03:57What makes Yorkshire great?
04:00It's the culture.
04:01It's the heritage.
04:03But I think above all else, I think it's the people.
04:07We see it as it is.
04:09We're known for maybe being a little bit blunt at times.
04:13But true Yorkshire folk really are the salt of the earth.
04:19It's an oldie bus, this one.
04:21It was early harvest July 22nd, 1949.
04:29There's your dad.
04:31There you are, look.
04:32You're right there.
04:33Oh, yeah, that's it.
04:35I'm setting them up.
04:36Yeah.
04:37It's the community spirit that we have in our villages
04:42and our towns, what sets us apart.
04:45Because if someone was in trouble,
04:47there'd be somebody there, close by, to help you.
04:50And I think that's what makes my part of the world so great.
04:54What's your new man?
04:56Aye, that's my mum and dad.
04:58Go on, Bunny, you're spitting image.
05:02You weren't the milkman's, were you?
05:05No.
05:06Oh, no.
05:07As long as you're alive, he's here.
05:09As long as you're alive, your dad and mum are still living.
05:21But all those years that have provided so many memories
05:24are starting to catch up with Steve and Jean.
05:28Especially when winter bites hard.
05:32How do you like the strong, frosty morning?
05:35It's better than the snow.
05:39This morning, temperatures have plummeted below zero,
05:43making life tough, even for these hardened Yorkshire farmers.
05:48Oh, this weather doesn't suit.
05:50It makes all drinking balls frozen.
05:53Don't you just frozen, carbs are frozen.
05:59It's harder than ever.
06:01But what do you do?
06:02Now what you can do, you just got to plod on.
06:05It's just ice that bothers me.
06:09And seeing where to walk.
06:12My foot's playing up just arthritis in it.
06:16I've got it in foot, knees, hips and joints.
06:20And small at back.
06:22It doesn't make no difference.
06:24Hard work never killed any man.
06:27Of course, Steve, we're going through here.
06:31Let's have a look at them.
06:33How are you, Eustace?
06:36We've got Brazil nut and hazelnut.
06:39And we've got a pair of nuts in here.
06:42Well, it takes one to know one, doesn't it?
06:45Yeah.
06:46Peter's coming to see them.
06:50And all being well, we're going to de-arm them.
06:55It's important to get their arms off.
06:58It stops them fighting and damaging each other.
07:03They injure one another and they injure us.
07:07It's hard for me and hard for Stephen.
07:11Especially if we've got arthritis.
07:14He doesn't like the card.
07:16He wished he hadn't to get up this morning at 7.
07:20And he moaned at me.
07:22He said, have we got to get up?
07:23I said, yes.
07:24This is what I couldn't do with staying in bed.
07:27Get up and get the old body going, man.
07:29These animals just get us out of bed.
07:34Remember the saying?
07:36What, sir?
07:37Winter chill and summer eat.
07:39Farmer's work so the world can eat.
07:41Ah, that's it.
07:44Hello.
07:45Hello.
07:46Hello, young man.
07:47How are you?
07:48Good morning.
07:49Good morning, Peter.
07:50A bit on Nippy side this morning, isn't it?
07:52It is.
07:53I bet you're having to work, Ed, just to keep warm.
07:55Well, now then, we have a job to do, haven't we?
07:58We have.
07:59This one, middle one, and then.
08:02Well, we've obviously got some length of horn here,
08:05so we're going to have to cut them off first before we burn them.
08:08We're going to have to be able to restrain them,
08:11because they're bigger than we would normally do,
08:14so that's the problem.
08:16I'm just wondering whether to sedate them,
08:18to sort of make them groggy,
08:20and then we can handle them better.
08:22And they might go down.
08:23I've got arthritis playing up at my foot this morning.
08:27Well, even more reason than, I think, to sedate them, James.
08:31I'm oblique.
08:32Yeah, well, that's no good.
08:33That's no good.
08:34I'm walking like a ruptured crab.
08:36It isn't only just doing the job, it's restraining them as well.
08:43And we're going to be able to manage them between us.
08:46I would hope we can hold them.
08:48I don't know.
08:49They're pretty big, aren't they?
08:51They are big.
08:53Jean's famous for her indomitable spirit,
08:56but she's really beginning to struggle.
08:59Hey, just give me a minute to get me to log on ice.
09:03I could help you.
09:05No, you're all right.
09:07Don't worry.
09:08Don't worry about it.
09:09I'll be all right.
09:11Oh!
09:12Oh, bloody hell.
09:14Let's go steady.
09:16I can't do it.
09:24Coming up...
09:25Tell them, Peter. Are you all right?
09:27Peter helps one friend explore the genetics of his show sheep.
09:30For our DNA testing, we're going to take a drop of blood,
09:33so we're all mate.
09:35And that, hopefully, will give Stephen an edge over his competitors.
09:39And climbs the Green's family tree.
09:42Looks very dappy.
09:43Looks very important, doesn't it?
09:45I do.
09:46But will he follow Jean when she celebrates her Yorkshire roots?
09:49I can't have a tattoo without another one.
09:52That's fair enough in my book.
09:55I can't have a tattoo yet.
09:56I can't have a tattoo on something.
09:57I can't have a tattoo here.
09:59proud yorkshire farmers never want to admit defeat but with temperatures in north yorkshire
10:11below freezing we might be better in here steve do you think steve and jean are both struggling
10:17to help peter who's at stonyborough farm to dehorn three calves well i've got arthritis
10:24this morning i'm sorry i'm not much root once i get mobile i'll be all right this is going to be
10:33more tricky than it normally is at mr mrs green's the problem is restraining our patients and i think
10:39my handlers are certainly not in the first flush of youth it will make restraint difficult so i'm
10:46going to have to sedate the cattle so that we can get the operation done it's going to be a long
10:52job right we'll just let him into passageway i'm good peter's seven's gonna go up a bit just it
11:01turns cold oh i'll be all right here one again too cold feet i'll do a bit of work that'll warm you
11:10i wonder if we should do it on another day when it's warmer my finger ends i can hardly feel it
11:14to be honest and i've abandoned the job it's seven degrees below freezing this morning and i'm worried
11:20about your youthful assistant it's too cold yeah i'm concerned for it no i'm all right no hey
11:26he's on antibiotics and i don't want to get pneumonia around like that well i didn't know
11:32that but i do now and i think we'll abandon the job this morning it's a bit too cold to carry on
11:39that's it so we'll have to go in let's go and get warmed up by fire just give me a minute
11:46let's go steady jean hold on can i take on you are you all right yeah i've got you stay
12:01so get going i'll be all right
12:07farming can be hard so i think it's better if we go back to the barracks at the moment regroup and then
12:15rearm for another day i usually carry on but this morning i couldn't do it i couldn't manage it
12:27light teas up do you want a piece of fruit cake your mom no i'm fine thanks i just want a drop of
12:33something warm as we all do it goes right down with that warm tea doesn't it on a day like this
12:43but it was bitterly cold out there i think we're right to stop as well no you aren't in shape
12:49that no and when we're all younger going out and uh removing those arms it wouldn't have been a big job
12:56we'd have laughed at it but not now no well when i've got a bit of time i'll come and give you a
13:01hand on these cold days if you like i'd be mad and grateful young man my granny always said a little
13:07bit of help's worth a lot of pity and i think there's something in that isn't there yeah and you
13:12always say the devil made work for right lands didn't he that's very true very true look i'm going
13:19have to go now anyway and get on but i'll thank you for the tea and keep that fire going see you peter
13:28see you gene yeah bye
13:34what is very noticeable to me over the years that i've been coming to steve and jeans when i say years
13:41i mean decades age and time is catching up with both of them
13:46oh so if i have a bit of spare time i'm going to pop in to the farm occasionally just to help out
13:54and do a bit of bedding up and do a bit of feeding if necessary under the jurisdiction of mr mrs green
14:00from dawn till dusk farmers all across yorkshire toil in all kinds of weather
14:21it's a rich heritage as the skills and stamina that are needed
14:26a pass down from generation to generation
14:36and as well as pledging to assist gene and steve with some of their manual labor
14:41elizabeth the first will be on the throne i think then that's how far it's going back
14:46after their recent delve through the family photos 1573 yeah i remember it well peter
14:56peter's helping them explore the green family tree there he is steve i'll show you him
15:01now then he looks marvelous doesn't he yeah he looks very dapper he looks very important he does
15:10well gene your great great granddad is coming up here and he sounds as if he could be from
15:16aristocracy because his name was marmaduke marmaduke you don't get many of them marmaduke's in your
15:23family dear i don't know who identifies a cat gene in those days but who knows but he died in circleby
15:33the village i was born in so he hasn't gone far has he couldn't get any local you couldn't really know
15:40going back in time for over 500 years i can't find anybody on your mother's side that was born
15:48outside yorkshire so i think it's fair to say that you're the pure of bread gene you're pure i'm a
15:54thoroughbred a thoroughbred steve was east yorkshire whitby but you both got pure yorkshire blood in
16:01here i never doubted it for one moment well i'm yorkshire born and bread long in the arm and thick in
16:07the head pure yorkshire woman you can't take that away from me
16:18across yorkshire near halifax another charismatic farming friend of peter's is also interested in
16:26heritage but in his sheep although only in his mid-20s fourth generation farmer stephen short
16:36is a multiple breed champion at the great yorkshire show with his hampshire downs
16:42and now he's asked peter for some help finding future winners
16:50in the veteran world as well as the farming world technology's moving on
16:55and what we're looking at this morning is we're taking a blood sample
16:58from his sheep which we're going to send off
17:04and that hopefully will give stephen an edge over his competitors by looking at the genetic
17:10worth of the sheep he's looking to breed from in the future
17:15steady
17:18why don't you say that now i'm peter are you all right
17:20well i wasn't grumble how's yourself keeping
17:22ah not so bad muddling on i see you've got the girls already in
17:25ah yeah they're in ready for you now once upon a time it would just be a case of you'd eye them up
17:30wouldn't you look at them and say i think that will do all right yeah whereas this can give you
17:35information maybe even before you can spot the potential it's surprising you know what a little
17:40bit of science might just tell you and i'm sure you've looked into the mechanisms of how these
17:45work steven well a bit of an idea you know i think it's fair to say that we wouldn't need to test
17:51your dna yeah you're pure yorkshire through and through aren't you ah that's something i like
17:59coin let's have a do right for dna testing we're going to take a drop of blood from them
18:05so we'll make and all and smooth on this card and then it's going to go off to be tested to study
18:14the whole genetic makeup that'll do the next contestant this particularly how goes back to um
18:22a talk called domino which were a hell of a good thing you're a better bleeding missus
18:29this isn't particularly painful it's just a very sharp prick trying to pick out these old bloodline
18:35sheep people yeah that there is a pedigree a father won a royal show bred champion
18:44all over a hell of a ram peter normally see steven sheep during show week it's like when you see
18:52these ladies and the press catch a picture of them when they've got no makeup on they look very
18:57different just like your shape really they look very different when they're not all uh trimmed all
19:02trimmed up it's almost like seeing with the curlers in isn't it really no they're not
19:08so we do we do quite nicely now just bear with me yeah a lot of the public don't understand the
19:21depth of knowledge that you would have you can go back through the history through the ancestors of
19:27these talking about them just off the top of your head you're going on a computer it's just there in
19:32your head and you can go to places like the great yorkshire show and come out on top there because
19:39of your enthusiasm because of your dedication and because of your knowledge that you've built up
19:46it's a life isn't it it's a life but um if i can leave the flock in a better way than what i
19:52found it when my time's up that'll do for me well that's something to put on your gravestone indeed
19:57after having her own pedigree confirmed as pure yorkshire jean's come up with an impulsive plan
20:20to really mark the discovery i think we're down here jane are we i think so so she's made the short
20:27journey to ripon with peter providing much needed moral support a few weeks ago peter give us an
20:34hand with family tree and they had the idea i was anchoring for a tattoo i don't know what one to get
20:43a bit yorkshire roads right let's go and have a look yeah where are we going i think now we're here
20:51naturally an experienced vet and farmer wanted an experienced tattoo artist
20:59this is it we're here and one of peter's friends recommended martin i've been a tattooist for about 25
21:07years seen everything nothing shocks me anymore but while he's seen all kinds of body art and piercings
21:16martin's never met mrs green he's a gentleman at work now jane well i'm gonna be naughty
21:23i'm gonna stick me neck in
21:28nice to meet you my name's peter this is mrs green she's got it into her head that she would like
21:33a tattoo do it there's one thing i can't have a tattoo without another one that's fair enough in my book
21:41does it hurt it's bearable pain some places hurt more than others um i hate having my back tattooed
21:49so you've had your back tattooed as well yeah yeah i've got my back my legs my arms my chest my bum
21:56had your bum done yeah they've even had my willy done and we don't want probably
22:04that must be very painful it was very very painful when it was very stupid
22:11he did
22:15i'm on virginal territory here i've never been into a tattoo parlor in all my life and i just hope mrs
22:22green's prepared for what is about to come and more importantly than that that steve when she
22:28gets home accepts mrs green all right jane we've finished lily's tattoo we can take you through there
22:33and get you sorted out for yours coming up i'm thinking you're not far around you're on my job
22:41will steve be in shock the problem is i brought you rules and the milk of yorkshire kindness
22:48we've brought you some fresh milk a nice pork pie made at our farm as well it's a milk in there
22:55as word of the greens needing help reaches the barnsley boys
23:11after gene learned that she's yorkshire through and through
23:14when peter explored the greens family tree we could maybe do a runner now she's had the wild idea
23:20of getting her first tattoo at 73 years young what do you reckon gene you don't think mr green
23:27will be upset if you went with one oh he would he got ballistic would he i don't need to be uh kicked
23:34out from home because he doesn't approve and i think it could put a major strain on the marriage
23:38i think it's your turn gene so what are you thinking then gene something like the auction roast
23:45i don't know what peter's having but he's having one i don't know don't be a coward i mean
23:55silence it's golden
23:57i don't know what it's coming up with it's some concoction but it's concentrating hard gene
24:07the suspense is quite something it's there's quite an atmosphere in here
24:14so something oh nice i like it it's very artistic
24:20white rosie yorkshire i think in my case in an emergency situation if there's an evacuation
24:28i've always believed in women and children first and i think in this instance i think i'll see how
24:33mrs green gets on first before i even consider taking the plunge i'm thinking up for her right
24:39if you're sure i'll get prepped and we'll get it on all right then all right darling you can have a
24:44seat we'll get you all sorted i wouldn't miss this for the world mrs green yeah but you're next in
24:50life maybe so but let's let's see how it turns out yeah well just remember you're not moving off that seat
24:56right gene let's get started let's get cracking then get on with job always buzzing like an odd bee
25:04oh jesus dating back to the house of york's foundation in the 14th century the yorkshire rose
25:16also known as the mystical rose of heaven traditionally represents purity and innocence
25:22let's see if steve's it out he's got a surprise coming hasn't he but will gene still seem pure and
25:28innocent to steve i hope he's happy hello boss oh hello jane how are you oh oh pretty good thanks
25:38have you enjoyed it we've been out on a bit of an adventure stay aren't we jane yeah we've been to
25:44ripon i've got some news for you you have well you'll never guess what mrs green's been up to she's
25:52met a very interesting man and i think she was quite taken with him is that right jane yeah
25:58but um the problem is i i broke your rule how did you what did you say to sarah she can't have a
26:07what oh yeah i know i want to tell well i broke your rule yeah yeah yorkshire rose what did you tell
26:15me what i said if you come here with a tattoo i said then come back yeah i think you've been married
26:24all this time all this time are you surprised she's come back with a tattoo on with gene you can't be
26:28surprised at now it's something else he's got one what do you reckon we've got a matching pair what
26:38you think lynn's gonna say well if i get kicked out can i have a bed for the night yeah are you gonna
26:44bun i'll see i'll think about it i will think about it stay one more surprise yeah i wonder what it was
26:55you pull it off yeah there you are you just pull them off don't you think she's a bit of a
27:05wind-up merchant steve she's a wind-up
27:08no i told you so i've got to say we got in there we had good intentions but then we chickened out
27:16didn't we yeah cool well there's a young lady in there having a proper one done and she said it was
27:22a bit painful but not only that we thought well once you've got them well you're stuck with them
27:26aren't you yeah i know you are aren't you so we said no and gene said i don't know what my husband
27:33will think and at that point we said no we're not going to go down that route she's pulled the wool
27:39over me eyes she has she's conned me
27:52of course you don't need a tattoo to display true yorkshire qualities like camaraderie
27:59and word has reached rob and dave at cannon hall farm have you got one for us any other oh good girl
28:06thank you very much that the green's daily workload is taking its toll caught up with our
28:12pal peter recently and apparently steve and gene green are not in the best of spirits they're
28:17they're not firing on all cylinders homemade parking it's got to be the one dave and i have
28:23had a think we're going to get a picnic together we're going to head up to thirst and hopefully lift
28:28their spirits well i think what i've got from the garden and you've got from the shop i think we're
28:33going to do them proud how are you doing hello you two youngsters shall we have a sit down steve
28:43sit down a picnic table right then so we've been in the farm shop and uh you've been a dairy farmer
28:50we've brought you some fresh milk we've got you some yorkshire mixture and some pontefract cake
28:58i've got you a nice bit of uh wensley dale it's made with yorkshire milk steve just like you used
29:03to produce here a nice pork pie made at our farm as well steve it's a beauty isn't it so hopefully
29:10steve that's your tea soda i was just thinking nice piece of pork pie nice piece of cake lump of
29:17cheese and a glass of milk how about that look who's come to see us he's looking well that's
29:31fernando do you think you're remembering us hang on steve give him a couple of carrots here you go steve
29:37big donkey isn't he he is he's a beauty isn't he he wasn't that big when we dropped him off you've been
29:43feeding him well so is it arthritis gene yeah dragging you down a bit you know why it's because
29:49you've worked so hard through all your life that you've just worn yourself out just a little bit
29:54i'm coming up 74 lads yeah i've been working 60 odd year so your bones are creaking are there any jobs
30:01that david and i can do gene while we're here well i could reckon there's one or two odd jobs
30:09you know we were supposed to be having a relaxing afternoon with gene and steve we are
30:13gene's giving me a list of jobs a mile long come on there's not like a good couple of fire
30:19months to give us an answer to what we want doing come on dave fire her up
30:25i want that to you until you've missed a bit
30:36in yorkshire we've got that sense of community come on lads if someone's a little bit down
30:41we rally round came up the gun work
30:48job's a good one
30:49looking like wimbledon now that dave great job it's a bowling green rob well you've done a good
30:56job there yeah my flow is a little bit disappointing but it'll get there in the end it always gets
31:02there in the end i like stepping back in time our old farm used to have a dairy like that it's just a
31:08lovely place isn't it milking is now done by robots then it was done by real genuine farmers and
31:15steve was that man and i think if we can end up half as good as him at that age i'd be more than happy
31:21yeah i agree
31:26you all right yeah we're about finished does that look all right steve yes thank you very very much
31:32the only really good job is that we need a job over summer like you know where to go well bear that in
31:38mind jane i'll give us a whip out oh well we better go yeah yeah see you later bye all right
31:53peter's also pledged to help the greens a little more it's like surgical gloves these
31:58in all kinds of ways peter what's the tea well don't push her up mrs green i'll have to tell her
32:06later she'll never believe it but top of his to-do list is still dehorning three calves
32:14hello girls after they had to abandon the job last time it was too cold and so we decided to go in and
32:22have a drink we just couldn't stand it it was like arctic weather wasn't it but with the calves
32:30getting bigger it's a job that can't be put off any longer these horns have grown longer than we would
32:38like which is going to make life more tricky hopefully things will go smoothly this time but
32:44er who can tell right round two round two well let's hope we do better this time we're going to
32:53put one calf into each pen and we think that'll be better for handling them and being able to restrain
32:58them i think mrs green said that you've got to keep out at wear there steve come on behind the yellow
33:05just for now come on what i'm going to do then is sedate them which will make our life easier and
33:12their life pleasanter because uh it has got a painkiller in as well when it's going to run like
33:18a military operation i've got a big one first right one good loss right right got him right
33:30one spotted one coming to you mrs green right shut him in stay got him right that meant we've got
33:39them all separated now time we're working well now right let's get this into one if i can let her go
33:47yeah i think she's going to get a bit wobbly soon you're doing a good job there steve
33:54there's no one way to go yet and we could have many catastrophes on route but so far so good
33:59still to come we're out lambing when snow's hot ground and tending cattle all year round poetry in
34:10motion it's hard work and little prey they're all untied any other way the lows and highs of farming
34:16freedom girls come on then
34:29peter gene and steve have often referred to themselves as yorkshire's a-team
34:37but recently they were soldiers of misfortune when they had to abandon a job in freezing weather
34:43right that's not it that's got that one done steve although today things are going more smoothly
34:49hey it's a sleeping bull it's a bulldozer it's just a bulldozer all right in the second attempt to dehorn
34:57three calves it's all right steve can i get you to hold this for me what you're charging for a haircut
35:06a haircut to free if you want me to tidy up while i'm here gene i will do and no extra charge oh good
35:14lad you might still object a little bit to this just be on the guards thing yeah i'm just keeping them
35:23perfect perfect that's off basically now that's one
35:33curve out off steve it's off right i was going to just learn it now don't feel this at all this is
35:42totally numb i need put it near a day you get less than play yes very true my old boss halfway told me that
35:52all right get nice and low when you do your horny you'll get less bleeding and by gosh it's very
35:57true i did not know that well at the age you are now and if you didn't know that well it must be one
36:04of the few things you don't know about steve and they're without learnings and they're wasted
36:14sometimes it's the sound of the saw that they don't like so i'm going to try these loppers instead now
36:19what you do you put it over the base of the horn and then you just like that that's it
36:31all right steve i think i got splattered there but never mind
36:36things might not have gone well last time but peter loves it right i'll tell you what
36:43me and your husband they're doing fantastically well in here when a plan comes together we're what
36:49you call the a team you're Hannibal peter i'm ba and steve's um face we don't know where murdoch went
36:59he's not feeling nothing to say he's just awkward right that's it steve now they look a bit gruesome
37:11now but couple of days when all that cake wood's done you'll hardly be able to see anything
37:17i'm willing for next she's on the way yeah well we've got them safely back to bed now haven't we
37:26yeah
37:29all in all it's a job well done we've got aging farmers and dare i say possibly an aging vet
37:36surgeon as well and it makes life a little bit more tricky for all of us
37:40we're all intact and i think i'd have struggled without your husband to help you know oh what about
37:47me don't give him up for us
37:57while they've kept hundreds of cows the greens have never worked with sheep oh look at that
38:04well you said you'd never done it before jean you're a natural come on babe
38:08apart from the time jean visited rob and dave all right you got it jean yeah and helped them with
38:14a lambing well done perfect well done oh you're born here you are
38:25that's jean mate jean to the world hey
38:28but a farmer who lives and breathes sheep all year round
38:38is stephen short come by who although only in his mid-20s is a hugely successful show champion
38:47and recently he asked peter to help him breed his next rosette winners so we've had the results back
38:54for the dna testing from when me and peter took the blood the other week and they were all a
38:59double r a double r which is group one there's five or six different groups and a double r is the best
39:06so a little bit of science is just helping us with a selection of breeding stock going forward to try
39:12and keep reading these champion rams it's all a bit technical for me all this modern science and that but
39:19super news really and it'll just help our job going forward for stephen this farming life isn't just a job
39:31it's more than a mere passion it's a calling which has inspired him to write a poem
39:38we're outlamming when snow's hot ground and tending cattle all year round we plow fields and then we
39:47scatter and make sure livestock have plenty of water i rise at quarter to five and milking me half past
39:5460 cows later it's time for me breakfast i never ate at my leisure because i'm always under loads of
40:00pressure and massive fergie there's no doubt tall lasses on their way out as tractors go it's done
40:06its toil carried males and turned on soil it's hard work and little prey they're on tight any other way
40:16i keep a few pigs the cows in store but you can't make job to you up no more
40:21and young vitamin is coming today that's something else i shot to pay
40:25if we're testing for boar vine diseases god forbid and effort sneezing
40:38those farming toils stephen has put into poetry have been taking their toll on gene and steve for decades
40:44but with blue skies over north yorkshire those cruel freezing mornings seem a long time ago
40:53oh i'll be all right too cold for you one such morning forced gene steve and peter to abandon a job
41:04i wonder if we should do it on another day when it's warmer just give me a minute too
41:11go steady gene it's harder than ever
41:14but yorkshire farmers don't give up easily back through here and it was second time lucky dehorning
41:23the three calves hello girls are you gonna say no it was a long winter for me and steve and it was hard
41:34hard for the best the dehorning was quite tough for them but the remarkably soon got over it
41:42now the youngsters want to enjoy the nice weather and just need the all clear from a short-sleeved peter
41:52good morning mr and mrs green hey young fella where's he come from you're looking very colorful
41:57this morning if you don't mind me saying no i'm right as important i'm full of the joys of spring
42:05i just wondered how these chaps are healing up do you think these cattle are ready to go out now and
42:13uh eat a bit of green stuff and have a bit of sun on their backs i think they're ready
42:17peter to go old are they do you want to go jogging this morning and do a lap of honor yes we've fed up of
42:26being in we want to go all right we're on the doors freedom girls on your way you're going they're on
42:35don't sound like my pitch go on then hey we've done it quite years here aren't we
42:48come on then farming is all about hard work mr mrs green know about hard work yeah girls girls to see
42:57this cattle going out now it's a wonderful sight and you can see the joy on their faces as well
43:05they're having a bit of grass and then they're frolicking across the paddock they're very happy to
43:09be out but it wouldn't be on a day like this well we've done very well to get them out between us
43:19team effort mrs green team effort 18 tails are up they're kicking their legs they're happy
43:26hi they are thanks for helping us oh you're welcome thanks a million
43:33after all those long hard hours on dark mornings for gene and steve moments like this are the perfect
43:40reward no better place than being here watching animals go out it's better than being shot in a
43:49factory and not in doing it as farmers when they get out to grass life is easier isn't it
43:56ideas because you don't want to feed them feed them up morning and night are you no and we can have a lie
44:09next time as the home help ramps up bloody hell 95 i don't know it still does it the greens show
44:17plenty of grit i give up your seven men to keep on keeping on i'm just fixing this old window but
44:25they're hit by the ultimate bombshell he's by himself at present while jean's in hospital jean
44:31should be here and she isn't let's just hope she's back soon hi i hope so now we're saying empty
