00:00The internet is going insane over these photos of Sammy Sosa with whitened skin, but what exactly is going on?
00:08Hey guys, it's Emily for Hollywood Life with your most necessary story of the day, and Sammy Sosa is one of the greatest home run hitters in MLB history.
00:16Sosa and Mark McGuire are credited with saving baseball when in 1998 they both went head-to-head, breaking the decades-old home run record of 61.
00:24Sosa hit 66, McGuire hit an unreal 70.
00:28However, this was the steroid era in the MLB, and his success turned to scandal.
00:33Sammy was dragged before Congress to testify about the rampant cheating in baseball, and suddenly he didn't speak English.
00:40Well, now that the Dominican-born slugger looks like this, he's drawing instant comparisons to Snagglepuss in this pink outfit.
00:47But what did he do to himself?
00:48Well, Sammy told ESPN, quote,
00:50It's a cream that I have that I use to soften my skin but has bleached me some.
00:55He then weirdly adds, I'm not a racist, I live my life happily.
00:59Skin bleaching is obviously very controversial for cultural reasons, but we spoke to a Beverly Hills Derm who tells us it is actually dangerous to bleach your skin to this extent because it puts you at elevated risk of skin cancer.
