00:00This has a body by Tickford. I had a girlfriend once. Yeah. But she drove a Tickford Metro.
00:14Yeah, it's just, you know, a metro for posh people. I'm hurt, you know, he just said that.
00:20Sorry, what's that? Well, you know, car for posh people. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Look,
00:26look, I'm going to start up a society for you.
00:32I'm Henry Cole. That is comfy. And along with fellow fanatic Fuzz Townsend.
00:38That's a magnificent pair of choppers up there.
00:41We're back on the hunt for vintage treasures in the nation's sheds.
00:45Look at this. We're going to buy them, fix them.
00:49That is fantastic. And sell them for a tidy profit.
00:53Welcome to Shed and Buried.
01:00We're off to see Rick in Hampshire.
01:06I know that he loves his bikes.
01:08But also, he does love a British motor car.
01:13Probably a lot of stuff is out of our price range, I guess.
01:16Well, maybe so. Lovely to view.
01:18Exactly. You know, you don't have to buy everything, do you?
01:21No.
01:22You don't have to own everything.
01:24No.
01:25Sometimes it's enough to see it.
01:27And admire it.
01:28Admire it.
01:29Oh, yes.
01:30Smell it.
01:31Yeah. Feel it.
01:32Be close.
01:33Yeah. Get involved.
01:34Yeah.
01:35Yeah.
01:36And then try and buy it.
01:37Hey!
01:41Whether we do manage to turn window shopping into purchasing, who knows?
01:45But Hampshire, here we come.
01:51Conor, tell us how it all started.
01:53It all started so long ago, wouldn't it?
01:55Did you have a beer, Dan, or not, when you first started?
01:58Yeah, just when I left school.
01:59Oh, yeah.
02:00Okay.
02:01All right.
02:02When he was eight.
02:03Yeah, about that.
02:04Yeah.
02:05I just started, done apprenticeship as a mechanic and just started buying and selling a few
02:10cars and motorbikes, first of all.
02:12Yeah.
02:13Is it just general engineering that you love and stuff that you fancy or is there an era
02:18or something like that?
02:19No, not a particular era.
02:21I like British stuff and I like a little bit of America and no sort of European stuff at
02:26all really.
02:27Yeah, no.
02:28But anything right from the beginning.
02:29I mean, there's a lot of lovely stuff here.
02:31I'm assuming that not all of it is for sale because there's some such lovely stuff, but
02:36maybe so.
02:37Hang on, look, he's just opened his arms like that.
02:39Yeah.
02:40That means perhaps.
02:41Some of it might be expensive, mightn't it, if I'm a bit reluctant.
02:44You'd have to really tempt me.
02:45I know.
02:46Have Henry got plenty of money?
02:47No, I haven't.
02:48No.
02:49We're on a bit of a shoestring.
02:50Oh, yeah, right.
02:51Okay.
02:52Well, we'll have a rummage.
02:53Yeah.
02:54See what we can dig up.
02:55We'll call you in on just a few things.
02:56Yeah, sure.
02:57Yeah.
02:58And then hopefully we'll have a haggle at probably more the bottom end of things.
03:01Sure.
03:02Yeah, fine.
03:03Great.
03:04I wish I had a beard like yours.
03:05Yeah.
03:06Yeah.
03:07So do I.
03:08This is real beard envy, is it?
03:09Yeah, it is.
03:10We are envying beards.
03:11Yeah, yeah.
03:12Great.
03:13Rick, we'll take a look.
03:14We'll see in a bit.
03:15All right, mate.
03:16See you later.
03:17All right.
03:18Wow.
03:19Rick's shed has got more prize goodies than the generation game.
03:23We'll start with something dear to Fuzzy's heart.
03:26A very unusual AC Aseca.
03:31So, alley bodied.
03:32Oh, yeah.
03:33Aluminium bodies.
03:34Yeah.
03:35Now, you've got to remember, post-war period, there were lots of people who had been working
03:39in the aviation industry.
03:41So there were lots of people who could work with aluminium.
03:43Oh, okay.
03:44And work with lightweight concepts.
03:46Yeah.
03:47So you could build a car such as this.
03:50They're absolutely exquisite.
03:51I had a little dinky one that used to be my brother's when I was a kid and I still rate
03:56these as perhaps the most beautiful two-seater sports tourer that you can get.
04:02Okay.
04:03Let me ask you a question then.
04:04Would you sell the house for this if Karen wasn't there?
04:07Yeah.
04:08If Karen wasn't there, yeah.
04:09Yeah, I would.
04:10Good.
04:11Mad in my own heart.
04:12Definitely.
04:13Marvellous.
04:14The AC isn't the only rare British car in here.
04:20Look at all this great British goodness.
04:23He's got a Jag XK140.
04:27It's just lovely.
04:28The lines are perfection.
04:30A Bristol saloon.
04:33These were gentlemen's expresses, gentlemen's saloons really.
04:37And for something slightly cheaper, but equally hard to find today, a Singer 9.
04:44I did try in the choir at school.
04:48Well, he said, sing an F or something.
04:51Yeah.
04:52Ding.
04:53And he said, thanks very much, Henry.
04:55Get your coat.
04:57The Singer Car Company had nothing to do with choirs or sewing machines.
05:04From their factory in Birmingham, they made low-cost tourers and saloons.
05:09The Singer 9 was a popular small sports car made between 1933 and 1949.
05:16So, look at the body shape on this.
05:17Look at the body shape on this.
05:19Now, this is perhaps...
05:20It's very MG.
05:21Yeah, it's perhaps an exception to the rule because it's got this quite upright rear aspect
05:26here.
05:27Yeah.
05:28And a long bonnet.
05:29So, it actually looks lovely.
05:31Now, let's just have a look, see if...
05:33Has it got...
05:34Has it got a...
05:35A six-cylinder?
05:36No, no, it's a four-cylinder engine.
05:38But look, you see, you've got that long, long sort of aspect at the front.
05:44I love it.
05:45The balance of the body shape is perfect.
05:52Rick's cars are fantastic, but way out of our price range.
05:56Not that his bikes look any less special like this vintage Harley.
06:04Now, I've just sold a WLA.
06:05It's very much like that.
06:07Yeah, yeah.
06:08That one would be a bit quicker.
06:09Overhead Vail one.
06:10It's a police bike.
06:111957.
06:12Wow.
06:13Been in storage for a long time.
06:14Has it?
06:15Got a really interesting extra pedal down there to rub the siren on the back tyre.
06:20Oh, yes.
06:21Yeah, and it works.
06:22Works lovely.
06:23Really screams as you go down the road.
06:24Fantastic.
06:25Look at that.
06:26Yeah, yeah.
06:27How amazing is that?
06:28Just never been touched, you know.
06:29Everything's sort of dead right as it should be.
06:32Moving next door.
06:34Oh, yes.
06:35That's a big step.
06:36One giant leap for Henry.
06:37Can I just say this is the holy grail.
06:41If you want a Bantam, you're going to want a GPO Bantam.
06:49Introduced in 1948, the BSA Bantam is probably Britain's best-selling bike.
06:56The Royal Mail, then known as the GPO, bought almost five and a half thousand of them, but
07:02very few are in such good nick as this.
07:07That is stunning.
07:08Look, it's got the leg guards.
07:09Yeah.
07:10It's got the graphics.
07:11It's mint.
07:12And also, can I draw your attention to that?
07:14Yeah.
07:15Hey?
07:16Yeah, that is great.
07:17One, two, five.
07:18They did go up to one, seven, five.
07:20I don't think I've ever seen a postie not in shorts.
07:23No, that's right.
07:24But that's because they're always using their legs, aren't they?
07:26I'm using me legs.
07:28Not as much.
07:29You're not a postie, are you?
07:30But you could take it up, couldn't you?
07:32Okay, yeah, I could.
07:33That is something very special.
07:35Continuing our search for something affordable, we head for his third shed.
07:42Where just beyond an E-type convertible, there's an anomaly.
07:47That is such a departure.
07:49Yeah.
07:50You wouldn't think that Rick would have something like that.
07:55The Harley Sportster is an all-American classic.
07:59Introduced in 1957 to compete with the British bikes, then overrunning America,
08:04it's still in production today.
08:08That is a 20-year-old bike now, isn't it?
08:10Mate, what is it?
08:1155, mate?
08:12Yeah, it's a classic.
08:13It is an absolute classic.
08:14It's a classic.
08:15Probably 1200 or 883, probably 1200.
08:17Yeah.
08:18The air filter, something's missing here.
08:20That's right, we're just undergoing some routine maintenance.
08:23It's down there by the looks of things.
08:24I'm sorry, mate.
08:25And look, there's a back for the seat down there.
08:27Oh, right, okay, so there's all that kind of stuff going on.
08:30Do you like Harleys?
08:31No.
08:32I like early Harleys.
08:33I don't like later ones.
08:34For me, now, we're in the period where there's too much shiny stuff on there.
08:39I like shiny.
08:40A bit of bling cheers you up of a morning.
08:43To me, anyway.
08:44I mean, I've got some seriously bling shoppers, as you know.
08:46Yeah, that's true.
08:47That's true.
08:48I've seen them in the glass next to your bed.
08:50Hang on.
08:51Are you being false teeth-ish?
08:53You are?
08:54No.
08:55You're being false teeth-ish.
08:56Anyway, look, may I draw your attention to this lovely United Automobile bus stop.
09:01It's not United Counties.
09:03It's United Automobile.
09:04It's up north.
09:05Now, look, seriously, mate.
09:07I love an E-Type.
09:08Sorry, I was just drawn to the Harley straight away.
09:10Yeah.
09:11E-Types are the quintessential British car to me.
09:13But, coupe, please.
09:16It needs to have that sort of sweeping fast back, whereas it just doesn't have it.
09:21It's just an E-Type with a boot.
09:23Exactly.
09:24There's some nice sounds around.
09:25There are.
09:26Okay, so now, let's go and see, Rick.
09:27But, okay.
09:28So, look, I know you're not favourite, but I quite like that.
09:30I can see that that would be a good purchase.
09:33Okay, so, look.
09:34I can't really afford none of these, mate.
09:36I understand.
09:37No, and we can't afford that lovely AC down there.
09:40You know.
09:41What about the post bike?
09:43Yeah, the GPO.
09:44The post office Bantam.
09:45Yeah, that.
09:46All right.
09:47Go on, hey.
09:48Let's go have a chat.
09:49Well, here we go.
09:50I'm diving in, right?
09:51Okay.
09:52The Harley behind us here.
09:53Yeah.
09:54How much will you think for that?
09:55Close to 40 grand.
09:56Told you.
09:57Steady you.
09:58Yeah.
09:59You've got a lovely Bantam GPO bike.
10:00Yeah, yeah.
10:01Got all the proper logbook for it that says GPO London.
10:04It's a genuine one, yeah?
10:05Yeah, a proper genuine one.
10:06Genuine GPO one.
10:07How much will that be?
10:08Three cents.
10:09Yeah, yeah.
10:10I've got all the proper logbook for it that says GPO London.
10:14It's a genuine one, yeah?
10:15Yeah, a proper genuine one.
10:16Genuine GPO one.
10:17How much will that be?
10:18Three, six.
10:19Okay.
10:20Yeah.
10:21Now, in the other shed we saw a Harley.
10:24Yeah, the Harley can be, it can make the Harley a bit of a bargain.
10:28Oh, yeah?
10:29Yeah, it could do three, six.
10:32Okay.
10:33Would we be thinking anywhere near the three thousand for the Harley?
10:48We're down in Hampshire with Rick and his fabulous collection.
10:55We can't afford most of it, but we've bid three grand on a Harley Sportster that started at four.
11:01I'd do three and a half.
11:02I'd do three and a half, but that is going to be the bottom line on that one.
11:07I can't do it any less than that, so it's got to be three and a half.
11:11But I don't know if you noticed, there's a backrest and there's a screen.
11:16You can have those as well.
11:17There's a battery charger with it to sort of make it a bit sweeter, but it has to be three and a half.
11:22Should have probably started a bit higher and then come down.
11:24Perhaps I've made a mistake there.
11:26No, you've never made a mistake.
11:28No.
11:29Hey, look, do you know what?
11:30Three and a half for the Harley.
11:31Let's do that.
11:32Yeah, why not?
11:33I'll tell you why, because I think we can make a little tickle on that once we get it running.
11:35Yeah, I think you ought to be able to.
11:36Great.
11:40Next morning, we share the good news with Alan Skid.
11:46I'm expecting you to be well happy with this, but especially you.
11:50I love Sportsters, yes.
11:52It's really shiny.
11:53That's good.
11:54Is it an 883 or a 1200?
11:561200.
11:57I know nothing more than that, apart from probably the battery's dead.
12:01Yes.
12:02And there is something going on why the air filter is off.
12:07Yes.
12:08I would imagine it's probably just been parked up.
12:11Yeah.
12:12And perhaps was going to start it up and...
12:14Carb's gummed up and he's taking the air filter off to have a look.
12:17I mean, perhaps it could be that old friend of ours, pilot jets.
12:21Yeah.
12:22Yes, sir.
12:23We're getting very acquainted with them these days.
12:25Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:26We are recently.
12:27Modern fuel is causing a big issue.
12:28I think we should go on a ride.
12:30I might have to take one of the really, really weird ones.
12:34Otherwise we might end up in a bush.
12:36Yeah.
12:37Okay.
12:38Well, shall we try and get it going?
12:39Oh, hang on.
12:40Is that the phone?
12:41Best of luck with the bike.
12:42I couldn't hear that phone.
12:43Oh, quick.
12:44I'm coming.
12:45No, I didn't hear a phone.
12:46Yeah, that's what it is.
12:47Yeah, that's what it is.
12:51As if I'd shirk work.
12:55To use Henry's terminology, let's go cheap.
12:58Yeah.
12:59Put a splash of fuel in.
13:00Yeah.
13:01See what happens.
13:02And then we'll go from there.
13:03If we have to have the carb off or whatever.
13:04Yeah.
13:05Then we'll go from there.
13:06Okay, cool.
13:07Fuzz juices are up.
13:10And Alan opens the fuel tap.
13:13Okay, you ready?
13:14Yeah.
13:18Shall we try it with some easy starts?
13:20See if we actually have any action.
13:22Before you start it, Fuzz, this engine is a dry sump engine.
13:26Right.
13:27Except the problem we have, it isn't a dry sump engine.
13:29The oil's probably, because it's been stood, drained from the tank to the crankcase.
13:33Okay.
13:34So if it starts, keep the revs low.
13:36Don't rev it high.
13:37Okay.
13:38Right, go for it.
13:39Okay.
13:44Easy starter spray on mixture of fuel and lubricant is a restorer's must have.
13:49Keep it there.
13:51It's perfect for engines that haven't run for a while.
13:55Okay, well the tank's filling back up now.
13:57Yeah, good.
13:58That sounds really nice.
14:00We should really put the air box on, because the air filter is all designed in for it, isn't
14:03it?
14:04Yeah, that's true.
14:05Let's do that next.
14:06The filter covers the carburettor's air inlet to keep out any unwanted dirt and dust.
14:18Sounds pretty smooth, doesn't it?
14:19Yeah, it sounds lovely.
14:20It sounds lovely.
14:21But it won't tick over properly.
14:22Right, start it again.
14:23That is a block pilot.
14:24Yeah, it is.
14:25Yeah.
14:26Okay, so we're in for a little bit of a carburettor clean, eh?
14:27Definitely.
14:28Definitely.
14:29Definitely.
14:30The 2005 Sportster was the last to have a carburettor.
14:31Fortunately, you can remove the jet without taking the whole thing off.
14:32I can blow through it, I can blow through it, but it's partially blocked, I think.
14:33Glad to see you've borrowed my glasses out.
14:34I hope the string doesn't annoy you.
14:35Yeah, I want to do the string.
14:36Look at that.
14:37It's straight through.
14:38It rotates nicely.
14:39Back in goes the jet and on goes the filter.
14:40Quite good.
14:41The 2005 Sportster was the last to have a carburettor.
14:46Fortunately, you can remove the jet without taking the whole thing off.
14:52I have to blow through it, but it's partially blocked, I think.
14:55Glad to see you've borrowed my glasses out.
14:58Yeah, I want to do the string.
14:59I hope a string doesn't annoy you.
15:00Look at that.
15:01It's straight through.
15:03Rotates nicely.
15:04Back in goes the jet and on goes the filter and Harley's your uncle if you had an uncle called Harley
15:12let's just try and start and see if it starts up without touching the throttle okay okay
15:19it's fine yeah
15:22that's fixed isn't it it's good as gold I think you need to swap that woolly hat
15:29for a crash helmet could be a good idea wouldn't it yeah
15:34and away he goes now Al's not Peter Fonda and my drives not route 66 but doesn't it look great
15:46the mark of his fingers like no vibration at all
15:53here we go coming around the corner yeah he's smiling he's giving it someone typical
16:00al he can't ride slowly and he's got a grin on his face yeah
16:09it goes really really well yeah it's strong
16:12but the alarms keeps going off I thought I heard a wind engine management light was flashing the
16:16battery light was flashing okay one cylinder at low res I think it's because the battery's absolutely
16:19flat okay so new battery and then proper test but in a nutshell Al it's really nice it pulls like a
16:25trailer I'm actually generally quite impressed yeah good yeah I'm not being a Harley person myself
16:29it's actually really nice to ride yeah I'm the only Harley like a here so I feel out on a limb but
16:35hopefully you now see why I like them these bars are too far forward as well they are well they
16:38shouldn't be up like that yeah I'll sort that out when I'm cleaning it Al there is one thing I like
16:43about these what they're nice and warm aren't they there's plenty of iron there yeah it keeps you warm
16:47yeah it keeps your legs warm in the afternoon Alan fuzz skedaddle leaving guy to fettle the baby
16:55I'll set the handlebars in the wrong angle so I'm just going to tip these back the problem with that
17:03is when you tip these back these will all be at the wrong angle they'll be up in the air so I'll
17:07have to adjust all this but it's only a couple of allen keys takes a few minutes and that'll make it much
17:12more comfortable to ride and then well I'm just going to polish it but look it's really clean
17:18it's not a jet wash it is literally a polish so I'll do the paint work and sort of seat and those
17:23bits first and then I'll get the metal polish out and I'll do all the metal and this thing is gonna
17:29look lovely Henry will love it because it's really bling and shiny and it's got that magpie effect for it
17:35guy starts on the handlebars it's a straightforward adjustment designed to be set to each riders
17:44preference always set the angle first and then set your switch gear not the other way around obviously
17:51you need it where it's gonna be getting the switch gear right five minutes later it's done yeah that's
18:01much better paintwork next for the bodywork skid uses good old furniture polish a fail-safe for
18:13bringing up the shine this bikes dressed to impress with gold flake built into the paint half an hour
18:22later it's ready to rock
18:31and rock it will
18:33I've left Alan and skid working and sneaked out on the sportster it's lighter than your classic
18:42harley cruiser but with its 1200 cc engine it still bosses the road
18:47this one has had a stage one screaming eagle tune-up on it hence why you can hear it it's much louder than
19:00the standard Harley and also obviously it's got a little bit more pose
19:05top speed on this bike is around 110 and though Harleys have a reputation for being a bit crude this model is
19:15great
19:18the gearbox though on this is as tight as a drum it's really nice there's nothing agricultural about it
19:27I guess it's the same with every bike you know as long as you pay attention love them and set them up
19:36right you ain't gonna have any trouble
19:39oh boy sorry how was that it's slightly inclement out there mate you know it's a relative hard chip to
19:52run oh no it isn't it's beautiful it sounded really really cool when you pulled away I must
19:56did it we stopped spanning didn't we it is quick as well oh the hell yeah but but I was surprisingly
20:01you know I've ridden a lot of those but actually with the old screaming eagle on and the tune-up it
20:08really does work yeah now I reckon four and a half grand all day long don't you it's gotta be
20:12look at it it's a gorgeous thing all we need to do is find a punter who agrees next day we do get a
20:25punter or to be more precise Rob our workshop assistant takes an interest you gonna do any work today or not
20:36well I quite like the look of this can I tell you Rob for your first proper steve that's proper
20:42yeah and I don't think you are a bit of a nutter and I think you might still manage to keep that one
20:47upright if you've got a sports bike I'd be worried why are you promoting the idea of him buying it
20:51because he's interested in it there's an interest-free loan on hand and I think he should go for it do you
20:58really like it I love it I've been looking for an 05 I know you have I know I know yes last of the car
21:04it's perfect I know everything we've been talking about is perfect it's the one four grand four so
