Hanukkah Celebration: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted a Hanukkah celebration at Downing Street, bringing together members of the Jewish community, faith leaders and officials to mark the Festival of Lights.

The event included traditional candle lighting and reflections on the significance of Hanukkah, which commemorates perseverance, faith and religious freedom. Starmer highlighted the importance of unity, tolerance and standing against antisemitism.

Hanukkah celebrations at Downing Street have become a regular feature of the UK’s political calendar, symbolising engagement with Britain’s diverse faith communities.

00:00Thank you so much and a very warm welcome to all of you, we thank you for that and I know that the message you will take to Australia is that we do come together to celebrate Hanukkah
00:28but we also come to stand together in solidarity because I know the whole community has been shaken once again, not for the first time, by the abhorrent attack on Bondi Beach and once again Jewish people killed for being Jewish.
00:51Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of all those killed and injured including of course the British Rabbi Eli Schlanger from Finchley.
01:03So thoughts and prayers, I think there's a profound feeling now, we need more than thoughts and prayers, we do need thoughts and prayers, of course we do, but we need more than that.
01:13We need to stand together in defence of the Jewish way of life, of the liberties and freedoms that make our British way of life.
01:23Look, anti-Semitism has poisoned our societies for generations, we know that, it's not a new problem, but there is this deep sense I think that it's becoming normalised.
01:33Let's recognise also what's at the heart of some of that anti-Semitism, a hatred of Israel, hatred of the world's only Jewish state.
01:45If we hide away from that we will never defeat this hatred.
01:49That's not saying people can't protest, we're very proud of the right to assemble and to protest in this country and we cherish it and guard it.
01:59But it is not legitimate protest to call for the murder of people that have never been met for something they are not responsible for.
02:09Diversity is British. If you value what is British, you value diversity and you protect it.
02:16It isn't an environment that makes being British a better place, it is what it means to be British.
02:22And this is a battle we're in, in politics with extreme right and extreme left, frankly.
02:26And we have to win that battle.
02:34This right at the front door of number 10, let's see if we can do better here.
02:46Huh? Is it?
02:48Yes.
02:52Oh.
02:54Oh.
02:56Yes.
02:58Oh.

03:02Oh, okay.
03:05Oh, okay.
03:06Oh, okay.
03:08Oh, okay.
