In a powerful show of resilience and unity, Berlin’s Jewish community lit a giant menorah at Brandenburg Gate on Sunday, December 14. The ceremony, led by Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, stood as a beacon of hope and defiance in the wake of a deadly antisemitic attack at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia.

Rabbi Teichtal moved the crowd, saying: “The only weapon we have against darkness is light, and the only response we have to hatred is more love.”

Attendees expressed the importance of celebrating faith, freedom, and life even amid violence. “One shouldn’t be afraid to express and celebrate, regardless of any violence,” said Rafaela, an Israeli living in Berlin.

Watch this inspiring Hanukkah ceremony and witness how light and love overcome fear.
