New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressed members of the Jewish community during a Hanukkah celebration on Monday, urging them not to live in fear.

Speaking to attendees, Adams warned against minimizing hatred directed at Jewish communities and said city leaders understand the concerns many feel. He encouraged New Yorkers to continue practicing their faith openly, including attending synagogues, wearing religious symbols and expressing their identity.

The mayor later joined the menorah lighting ceremony on stage, marking the Hanukkah celebration.

00:19I'm not here to be treated as though there's a level of a royalty that's associated with being the mayor of New York.

00:27I want you to know that your pain, I feel your pain.

00:32Folks, I said this over and over again.

00:34You really need to understand that this is not about a piece of property in the Middle East.

00:41This is not about Israel.

00:43This is about Jewish people.

00:46And they can use whatever terms they want.

00:48They can sugarcoat it all they want.

00:50But someone must be honest, because it wasn't Israel when you were put in the Roman quarters in Rome and couldn't come out at night.

01:03It wasn't Israel when you had to leave Spain at a particular time.

01:08It wasn't Israel when Moses had to leave.

01:12It wasn't Israel when the war happened and the Holocaust happened.

01:17Let's not allow people to make us believe that this is about just a location on a map.

01:26This is about the comfortability that people have with hating Jews across the globe.

01:32I want you to know that there are those of us in this city that feel your pain and know what you are going through at this moment.

01:49But do not live in fear.

01:50Do not stop outside your synagogue and determine if you're going to go in or not.

01:59Do not contemplate before you enter the subway system that you're going to take off your yarmulke.

02:05Do not pause and go into your Shiva and say you're not going to wear your Star of David.
