00:00To reboot, and then we'll go to the phones.
00:04A man named, emailed Joe Lacob in frustration as a Warrior fan,
00:14and the email stated,
00:17Dear Joe, please do something about this team.
00:21What does Steph need to do every night to win?
00:23Drop 50?
00:24Team needs a real second option.
00:26Jimmy's tools are being underutilized because he's playing as a power forward
00:29due to the small position players.
00:31We've got no true center.
00:32I'm so frustrated.
00:33Thanks.
00:34Two minutes later, and authenticated.
00:38And you know what that is?
00:39It's an authentication sensation, Mark.
00:41Yeah, an email back from Joe Lacob.
00:44Welcome back, Randy.
00:45That was an anticipation sensation.
00:47Here, do it again.
00:49Hi, Grandy's feeling better today.
00:51Look at everybody.
00:52It's Mark Grandy.
00:52What's up?
00:53How we doing?
00:53I miss you guys.
00:54The champ is back.
00:56I texted him yesterday.
00:58I'm like, come back.
00:59Yeah, what are you doing?
00:59Lucas is annoying.
01:01That was the text.
01:02The show changes when Lucas can see dibs, things change.
01:08A little bit more interactive.
01:10Hi, Lucas.
01:11He's like a housefly.
01:13He can't see us over there.
01:14Buzz, buzz, buzz.
01:15Yeah, Lucas.
01:16Joe Lacob's response.
01:18You can't be as frustrated as me.
01:20I'm working on it.
01:21It's complicated.
01:22Style of play.
01:23Coaches desires regarding players.
01:25League trends.
01:26Jimmy's not the problem.
01:28Joe.
01:29So, there you go.
01:30I don't think there's anything controversial in there.
01:33I don't think that it's wrong that Joe emailed.
01:36I just think there is a strategic window into the Warriors.
01:42And I find it not like problematic yet.
01:46I find it concerning.
01:48That's how I would phrase how I feel about it.
01:51And I started, actually, oddly, and maybe coincidentally, I started this conversation yesterday.
01:56We talked about it a little bit.
01:59I'm concerned a little bit about the stubbornness at the ownership level of the Warriors because they are, I think, understandably, they're very proud of themselves.
02:10And they have achieved and built a lot.
02:13But I also think that that leads to them constantly thinking that they're right.
02:19And they haven't always been right.
02:21And they stick with their rightness too long when they're wrong.
02:24It's okay to be wrong.
02:25We're all wrong.
02:26But in the Wiseman situation, the Kaminga situation, you've had organizational clarity that it's not going well and you held on too long until the asset has been devalued.
02:41And we all have the same question, I think, about what is this, how effective is this ownership group when Steph Curry's not on the team?
02:48When we're going to find out, and we don't yet know what the asset's value is because the asset has not been turned into.
02:55And this is Jonathan Kaminga.
02:56He's not been turned into whatever is next.
02:58And I do believe that he will be traded in the next 30 days or so when he can be traded.
03:05So I won't speak about the asset yet until we actually see what the asset can command.
03:10But you ran down all of the five lines in that response from Joe Lacob.
03:15The first one, I am working on it.
03:18That one to me is a little bit troubling because it speaks to the hubris of the I, me, mine that I talked about in the crossover.
03:26Like, I am working on it.
03:28Well, you have a GM.
03:29You've got a whole staff of people who probably are also working on it, including a couple of your various kids.
03:35But, you know, and again, it's just a response and an email two minutes after it came in.
03:40So I'm not going to hold him like feet to the fire over every word.
03:44Style of play, I did think, was a fascinating look at where they are because, as I shared with the group, the league is playing faster and you are playing older.
03:54And so you've got longer and faster and teams that actually shoot the three better than you.
03:59And you are not as long, not as fast, and you don't shoot it as well.
04:03And that speaks to league trends as well.
04:06The league has gone by you because you've gotten older and you don't have the players who play the way.
04:12And I won't say OKC because they are, like, unbelievable right now as far as league trends and style of play.
04:18But even Portland, a younger, faster team that can actually hit open threes, and they've done it to you twice.
04:25They've beaten you three times.
04:27That, to me, is the bigger issue in all this.
04:29888-957-9570.
04:31Let's hear from you, OK, on Willard and Dibs.
04:33Nick Fidel, 315.
04:35Steve Kerr, 5 o'clock.
04:36Dave in the city, first up.
04:38Hi, Dave.
04:39Thanks for calling in.
04:42Hey.
04:43Yeah.
04:44Kind of, Dave.
04:45Try again.
04:47Can you hear me now?
04:48Yeah, that's better.
04:50All right.
04:51Perfect.
04:51I mean, I think the resume allows an owner to talk that way.
04:58So I got into the head, but I absolutely want an owner talking that way because, you know, I want him to take accountability and not just, you know, think about the money.
05:08He's embarrassed about what we've been putting out on the court.
05:11So I like that in the owner.
05:13Now, if you were to tell me Jed was to do it, I'd be like, Jed, sit down somewhere.
05:18But, you know, my second part, just a quick blurb.
05:22I think it's time that we move on from Jimmy and Draymond.
05:27Jimmy doesn't look like he has it anymore to be that second option, especially this year.
05:33And January 15th can't come soon enough.
05:37I think everybody has to be on the block other than Curry.
05:40Let me know what you guys think.
05:41Okay, Dave, thanks.
05:42And I think that's going to be a somewhat popular response.
05:46I think there's two pieces to that.
05:48Has Joe earned it because of their success?
05:50I think you can argue that.
05:51The second part is, sure, like what you were just saying, are we splitting hairs here with the wording?
05:57I don't mind that he's working on it.
05:59He should be working on it.
06:00Right.
06:00They all should be.
06:01And they all are.
06:02That's the question.
06:03The question is, is Joe like, no, I'm working on it.
06:06I'm going to step in here.
06:07I'm going to tell Steve Kerr and Mike Dunleavy about style of play and which players they should like.
06:13That's when I, and I don't know that that's what's happening, but we do know that Joe Lacob is very involved.
06:21Yep.
06:21And we are not, this is not the first day that this has come up and comments from folks like Andre Iguodala and Bob Myers and many others have at least flirted with the idea of Joe's a lot.
06:38Joe's a lot to work for.
06:41I bet Joe would agree with that.
06:42So that's where, to me, the conversation is.
06:45Second part of his commentary with regard to, I always think this is interesting.
06:50Everybody's available, not named Steph.
06:53It's true, but you do realize, I think that if you're, if that's your thought, it's time to move on from Jimmy and Draymond.
07:01You sort of are saying it's time to move on from Steph.
07:04I don't, I don't know who, who is this other person that you're bringing in a month from now or, or, or a bevy of people who are going to come in and immediately blend with Steph and off we go to June together.
07:18Like that, that, that, wow, what a storybook.
07:21I don't, I just don't believe that to be possible or on the table.
07:26I don't buy it at all.
07:27So you're going to trade Jimmy, who's making about 54 or whatever he's making.
07:31So you're going to trade him to a team that is really good and they're going to give up their $54 million player.
07:38No, that's not the way this goes.
07:39So you're going to trade him to somebody like, I don't know, Sacramento, who has Zach Levine making 42 million.
07:46So you get Zach Levine and you get somebody else to come in here for Jimmy Butler.
07:50And you probably have to attach picks too, because I don't think that Sacramento wants that.
07:55And so now you've got Zach Levine instead of Jimmy Butler.
07:58And now you're going to go from an eight seed to a three seed.
08:01I don't see a trade for Jimmy being at all possible or being at all prudent.
08:06And the other one, you mentioned it with Draymond, like Steph and Draymond, Draymond and Steph, they play so well together.
08:13Steph doesn't want Draymond to leave.
08:14No chance.
08:15I have this like big overarching question that I have decided we're never going to get an answer to.
08:21But every warrior conversation I get into, I bet you too, and certainly on this show, everybody has opinions that really kind of started, if you date back to the last ring, from that point forward, things have seemingly been controversial as often as they have been not.
08:42From Draymond punching Jordan Poole, to the Kaminga experience, to Andrew Wiggins.
08:49Draymond hitting Nurkic, Draymond choking Gobert.
08:51All the Draymonds.
08:52Yep.
08:53Okay.
08:53And then Wiggins' disappearance, and then the trading for Butler, all of the stuff.
08:58And it's all led to the same sort of thing, which is like good, but not good enough.
09:03Um, and everyone's got all these opinions.
09:06Trade this guy.
09:08Trade that guy.
09:09Let's do this.
09:10We're all in the trade machine.
09:12I have one umbrella question.
09:15What does 30 think?
09:17And isn't it correct?
09:18We never know.
09:20We never, ever, ever, ever, ever know.
09:23Well, 30 won't ever let you know what he thinks.
09:25I'm sure he lets them know.
09:26But that's partly why they got Jimmy Butler, I would bet.
09:29Well, that, to me, that is, that's the ultimate card.
09:34That's the winning card.
09:36That's a wild card.
09:38It's the Trump card.
09:39What does 30 think?
09:40Right.
09:41I was trying not to use that word.
09:42What does 30, what does 30 think?
09:45Because I don't think you can functionally do anything.
09:48As a warrior organization that has openly stated, we are doing everything for Steph,
09:54if you're not getting Steph's opinion on it.
09:57So, therefore, every time someone goes, man, this freaking Draymond guy with the punches
10:04and the this and then that and the other, what does 30 think?
10:09Because, to me, it's a conversation ender.
10:12If Steph Curry grabbed a mic and went, I'm not playing without Draymond, period.
10:17Well, then, we're done here, right?
10:19I'm not playing for anyone other than Steve Kerr.
10:21Exactly.
10:22Which, by the way, he's flirted with these comments before.
10:25But he hasn't fully made them.
10:28But I always wonder about that.
10:29When people want to trade this and trade that and everybody's available except for Steph,
10:33I don't think Steph agrees with you.
10:35I don't know.
10:36Because he doesn't say it.
10:37Right.
10:38I don't think he agrees with that.
10:39I do think that if you look at the tea leaves and if you look at exactly what's going on
10:43with the organization, most of it is based on, you know, things that you're going to do
10:48to maximize the Steph Curry window.
10:50Whether or not he's making the calls or not, I doubt he's making all of the minutiae maneuvers
10:56like Kavon Looney, for example.
10:58Sure, sure, sure.
10:59All right.
10:59You know, Kavon, I'm sure he would love for Kavon to stay.
11:02But financially, it's going to put you in a spot where maybe you can't get this or you
11:06can't get that.
11:07I do think when you look at a Jimmy Butler acquisition, a veteran Steph wanting another
11:12vet and even Al Horford where, yeah, let's bring in a stretch five who I know he can
11:17play.
11:18He's played for 18 years.
11:19I know how he plays.
11:21I do think that a lot of these are not, you know, Steph as GM, but they're all built around
11:25the Steph Curry window.
11:27And so, yeah, you're totally pot committed.
11:30You brought in Jimmy.
11:30You paid him.
11:31You've got Draymond for one more year.
11:33You've got Steph for one more year, maybe longer.
11:35And I do think with Steve, at least for the rest of this year, that's where you're going
11:40to be.
11:40The most recent text here on the Boxer and Gerson work injury attorney's text line.
11:45Another way that you can interact with us, by the way, we do see him.
11:499-2-5.
11:50Draymond is dead weight.
11:51They should have gotten rid of him after the previous contract and never signed him again.
11:55Same response.
11:56What does 30 think?
11:57Right.
11:58Does 30 agree with you?
12:00Because couldn't I flip 95% of Warrior fans who think that if I had said, oh, no, Steph
12:07Steph absolutely said, you have to keep Draymond.
12:11You have to.
12:11Or else.
12:12Or else.
12:13Right.
12:13Or else I don't, I don't, maybe we just won't do this together anymore.
12:16I mean, we don't, we don't know how, how he really feels, but.
12:20I mean, there's, the thing is we don't, but there's so much Warriors organizational evidence
12:26through the years that they feel that Draymond Green is a must.
12:31Is a must.
12:33Right.
12:33They wouldn't even suspend him after he punched a teammate.
12:37It was ring night, Mark.
12:38He had to get his ring.
12:39They backed him every time.
12:41Every single time.
12:43And I think it's a very fair thing for fans to feel like that was a mistake.
12:47But my mind goes to, well, where's 30?
12:51Where's 30 in all this?
12:53Look around the league.
12:54Every star tries to basically conduct the organization.
12:59Don't they?
13:00Right.
13:01Giannis has brothers playing for the team.
13:03He's out like, I might ask for a trade.
13:06They brought in Lillard.
13:07Right.
13:08To help.
13:09These stars run the show.
13:11But here we just, because he's so special and different and nice and all of that.
13:18But I firmly believe that behind the scenes, these same kinds of conversations are happening.
13:22Why wouldn't they?
13:23Well, then let's just spin that to where all roads lead.
13:25Because if you get to Jan 15 and Kaminga can be traded, if 30 really thinks that Kaminga can fit with this team, then Kaminga's not getting traded after January 15th.
13:36I don't even think he'd be getting DNPs if Curry would demand that he doesn't get DNPs.
13:41And that's what makes the Lakob comments in the email so fascinating, because his line that he wrote was, coaches desires regarding players.
13:49Yep.
13:50Coaches desires regarding players.
13:52And so, what does that mean?
13:55It means Steve Kerr is playing who he thinks he can win with.
13:58And if that's his desire to not play Kaminga, then Lakob, you know, went out of his way to use that phrase in the response to the fan.
14:07I don't know what other desire you could look at, like, all right, Seth Curry doesn't play, fine.
14:11Is that his desire?
14:12And maybe it's like, Steve loves pods.
14:15He plays pods more than anyone else.
14:17No, I'm sure.
14:17I'm sure that.
14:18It's all these things.
14:19It is, but its majority is, like, it's those two players.
14:23Right.
14:23Like, I don't think Joe is like, if we would play Will Richard, then we would be the two seed.
14:29I don't think Joe Lacob thinks that.
14:30I don't know if anybody thinks that.
14:32But there is a complicated sort of cycle that has developed, and it's mainly about those two players.
14:41That's why those two players get talked about by fans so much.
14:44Yeah, and then he goes on to talk about league trends.
14:47And I do think that the trend is have a bunch of 6'5 to 6'7 guys who are athletic, who can be 3 and D, who can, you know, defend and attack and shoot.
14:58And that's one of the trends that the Warriors have not been able to follow.
15:01And again, that kind of goes back to Kaminga, where he's that guy, if he could shoot a little bit better, play the defense they want, rebound the way they want.
15:10And beyond that, like, the Warriors have Moody, okay, and beyond that, they've got, you know, Melton and Pods and Seth and Steph.
15:19These are littler guys.
15:21These are not, like, big-time wings like the league trend is.
15:24Let's go Sam and Sunnyvale next.
15:26Hi, Sam.
15:26Thanks for calling in.
15:28Hi, I love the show.
15:29Thanks.
15:29So I wanted to comment on the I'm working on line.
15:34Okay.
15:34So I don't read that with anything.
15:37Sorry, my dog is.
15:38That's okay.
15:39Introduce us to your dog, Sam.
15:40Who's your dog?
15:42My dog is Smush, and he's a bulldog, and he has a name of Smush.
15:46He's got kind of a smushy face.
15:48Okay.
15:48Your last word's not Parker, is it?
15:51No.
15:52Okay, good.
15:52Thank goodness.
15:53All right.
15:53Go ahead.
15:54So I see that Joe saying I'm working on it as a failure of responsibility.
16:01The buck stops here, right?
16:03President Truman, you know, famously had that sign on his desk.
16:07It doesn't mean that he's going to go ahead and make every single decision, but it does
16:11mean he's at the top.
16:13He's the guy who signs the paychecks, and he's got some responsibility.
16:18And I think that's reasonable.
16:20I mean, there are a lot of things in that email that could be talked about, and you guys
16:24are doing a great job of it, as other callers are.
16:28But two minutes later, he comes back and says, like, yeah, I'm working this situation.
16:34I think it's good.
16:35People would be understandably upset if he said, yeah, we don't really know what to do.
16:41You know, I've delegated the whole thing to my staff, whatever.
16:44I think it's a positive.
16:46Sam, I think that's totally fair.
16:48Thank you so much for the call, and enjoy the dog park this afternoon.
16:53Yeah, the smush.
16:54I don't think it's a negative, but I do think it's telling over the way he looks at it.
16:58And I'm looking at the Jed York comments after they had fired Harbaugh and Balky, and
17:05I'm looking at all these comments from NBC Bay Area from almost 10 years ago, and it's,
17:09we were 2-14.
17:11We need to get the right people.
17:13We need to be better.
17:14We have a vision, and I do think that when you think about it from that collective, it's
17:19much more, it's more comforting for me as opposed to I, me, and mine.
17:25That's fine, too, but also listen to those sentences you just said after Jed said we.
17:30Read them again.
17:30We what?
17:31We have a vision that's going to last for a long period of time.
17:34We have a vision.
17:35We need to get the right people.
17:37Got the right people.
17:38We were 2-14.
17:39We didn't do a lot of right things this year.
17:41We need to be better.
17:42See how general those statements are?
17:45That's, for me, it's a combo.
17:47It's a one-two punch.
17:48I don't mind that he said, I'm working on it, but the next thing he said sort of is indicating
17:53what he's working on, and he got into the weeds.
17:56He did not say, I'm working on it.
17:58We have a vision for the future.
18:00We're really looking to be better and do sort of that lip service stuff.
18:05He said, I'm working on it.
18:06We got league trends.
18:07We got a coach that's over here that's got certain thoughts about players.
18:10Got style of play.
18:11Got style of play.
18:12It's complicated.
18:13Like, he went into the weeds, and that's where I went, ooh, okay.
18:19Maybe, like, maybe you're good at this, but in a general sense, you can all tell me all
18:25you want that because he's won rings, that makes it kind of okay.
18:29In a general sense, that is not the way that I like to see an owner go about it.
18:36Whether he said I or we, we're working on it, and now I'm going to dive into really deep
18:42basketball stuff and tell you that I'm about to go over here and do these things because,
18:50as he just pointed out, Sam said he signs the checks.
18:54That's what most owners do, period.
18:57Go to bed.
18:59Greg Johnson waits for a phone call from Buster Posey.
19:03Hey, Greg, can't I?
19:05Well, come on in.
19:05Let's have a meeting and see if you can convince me.
19:08Why?
19:08Why, baseball person, do you want to do this baseball thing?
19:12Greg doesn't go over to Buster's house and be like, so, this EMI guy looks really, really
19:17hot.
19:18I think we should sign him.
19:19I don't think that's the way it goes.
19:21And maybe everyone's okay with that.
19:23But in a general sense, my antennas go up whenever an owner dives into the weeds of the
19:29sport.
19:29And I wonder how deep in the weeds he is, and it's something I'll ask Steve Kerr today
19:35when we have him on at 5 o'clock about Joe Lacob's input on things like, you know, rotations
19:41and DNPs and all the rest of it.
19:44Is he that involved?
19:45Because I'm thinking about Moneyball, where, you know, Billy Bean was very involved in,
19:50you know, what Art Howe was supposed to be doing and who was going to play against certain
19:53people and, you know, the Giants before they got into the Bob Melvin and now into the Tony
19:58Vitello where, you know, Farhan, hee-hee-ha, and the spreadsheet, it's like, here's the
20:04spreadsheet.
20:04This is what the spreadsheet says.
20:06And so let's act accordingly.
20:08But those are GMs.
20:09Those are GMs.
20:10Those are not owners.
20:11I know.
20:11Well, but this is, it's even more of a dramatic thing where, yeah, he's the owner, but he's
20:18the owner, but he's also kind of like the president of basketball ops, which is, I mean,
20:24his kids are.
20:25So that's the conversation.
20:26Right.
20:27That's the conversation.
20:28And my question is, how involved is he?
20:30And I don't know if Steve will actually answer, but I'm just curious about.
20:34Totally.
20:35Like, again, I don't have like a problem with this.
20:38It just makes my ears start moving around a little bit.
20:41That's kind of the best way I can say it.
20:43Makes my ears move around a little bit.
20:45Because while some of you will go, hey, Willard and Dibbs, resume, rings, I think it's fair
20:51for either of us to go, right, Steph Curry.
20:55Steph Curry.
20:56The resume of Joe Lacob making basketball moves correctly, being a basketball ops person, is
21:04what?
21:05Well, we don't know.
21:06Like, we all want to assign Wiseman to Joe Lacob.
21:10And I don't know if we're ever going to find out how that all went down.
21:14And, you know, whether it's Kaminga is the same and two timelines.
21:16We all want to use that fraudulent phrase because they never said it, but it became a
21:21thing.
21:22So I don't even know how much of that you put on Joe Lacob.
21:25But when I hear these comments in this email, it does strike me a certain kind of way.
21:30OK.
21:31So I can.
21:32So I can.
21:33So I can.
21:34Let's go.
