This week on Heat Vision Breakdown, we dissect Marvel's huge San Diego Comic-Con announcement including Mahershala Ali's 'Blade,' Natalie Portman taking on the role of Thor and dig into what's in store for Disney+ and Phase 4.
Transcript
00:00Hello friends.
00:01Holy .
00:03Marvel Studios dropped Mjolnir, there I said it right that time, hard on San Diego Comic
00:07Con, laying out his plans for Phase 4 of the MCU and revealing some truly jaw-dropping
00:11castings.
00:12This week on Heat Vision Breakdown we digest all the craziness from Marvel's SDCC panel
00:16and look at what the introduction of the mighty Thor, horror in Doctor Strange 2, and oh yeah,
00:21Mahershala Ali as frickin' Blade means for the future of the MCU.
00:28The first film of Marvel's Phase 4 is Black Widow, a long-promised standalone for Scarlett
00:32Johansson's titular assassin.
00:34ScarJo told me, personally, that's right Aaron, I get answers.
00:37Oh, good for you.
00:38Yeah.
00:39The only reason to make this film was if we could elevate the genre in some way.
00:43What does that mean exactly?
00:44Well, expect not only a lot of action, the stars have been going through some serious combat
00:48training, but also a script with a lot of intrigue.
00:50Johansson mentioned on the press line that there were seven pages of dialogue in the schedule
00:54for that week of filming, noting it's a lot more talking than other Marvel films.
00:58Black Widow, like this year's Captain Marvel, is a prequel, but that doesn't necessarily
01:01mean it can't also introduce plot points that will have ramifications for the rest
01:05of the MCU.
01:06However, expect 2020's other film release to blow things even wider open, The Eternals.
01:11Kevin Feige described the new film as being full-on Jack Kirby, and star Angelina Jolie said
01:15she will work ten times as hard on this project than on a normal one, because of its responsibilities.
01:19Does that mean she was half-assing it as Maleficent?
01:21What an awkward situation.
01:24Little is known about this cosmic adventure, but I'm wondering if this could tie in to
01:27the not-yet-dated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 somehow, perhaps by introducing Adam
01:32Warlock.
01:33Both films center on Marvel's cosmic side, so there is a good chance of some crossover
01:36happening.
01:37Fall 2020 will also see Marvel's debut on the small screen.
01:39I mean, besides all those Netflix shows and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but apparently even
01:43Feige doesn't care about those.
01:44The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be the first series to debut on the new Disney Plus streaming
01:48service and will be a major turning point for the MCU.
01:51This is an opportunity for the studio to truly explore trans-media storytelling, with movie
01:55stars hopping between the big screen and the small.
01:58Anthony Mackie walked out onto Hall H carrying Captain America's shield, a tease to how
02:01this connects to the end of Avengers Endgame, which saw him pick up Cap's mantle.
02:05Coming out three years after Black Panther made February a viable month for the MCU,
02:09Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will hit February 12th, 2021.
02:14In addition to the casting of Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu as the titular character,
02:18and Awkwafina in an undisclosed role, the big surprise came when it was finally revealed
02:22that the real Mandarin will show up in this film.
02:24You may remember a fake version of the character from Iron Man 3, in which Ben Kingsley played
02:28a drunk, struggling actor pretending to be the supervillain.
02:31If you don't remember that, I envy you, because it was dumb and I spent way too much time thinking
02:35about it.
02:36Oh, it was so good!
02:37Really?
02:38Yeah.
02:39Soon after Shang-Chi, Disney Plus, we'll have WandaVision, which sounds like a knockout
02:43brand of television sets, but is actually a streaming series set to debut in Spring 2021.
02:47We actually don't know that much about this one, though.
02:49Well, actually we do, because Elizabeth Olsen told me that Kevin Feige pitched it to her
02:53himself.
02:54Now you want to know what it's about?
02:55Kinda, yeah.
02:56Well, she wouldn't tell me, but sources said it's based off of the classic comic book
03:00storyline House of M. That's when Scarlet Witch reshaped reality after a tragedy.
03:04In this case, the death of Vision.
03:06See?
03:07I do get information.
03:08Nobody likes to show off, Aaron.
03:09Get out of here.
03:10Moving on, Loki will also come out in Spring 2021 on Disney Plus.
03:15Feige confirmed at Comic-Con that the show will center on the 2012 version of the Trickster
03:19God who stole the Tesseract in Endgame.
03:21What's he been up to?
03:22Probably tooling around space and getting into shenanigans.
03:25Likely even running into familiar heroes, maybe even the Guardians.
03:28The bigger question is this.
03:30Will Tom Hiddleston ever retire from this role, which forces him to sport the world's worst
03:33haircut?
03:34Okay, enough streaming shows for now.
03:35The next big screen adventure will be Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness on May
03:407th, 2021.
03:42This will be the first ever major test of Marvel's Disney Plus strategy as WandaVision will lead
03:46into Doctor Strange 2 and Elizabeth Olsen will also appear in the film.
03:50Perhaps her reality distorting activities in WandaVision will finally cause a rift in
03:54the multiverse that Jake Gyllenhaal had promised and not delivered on in Far From Home.
03:59What a jerk.
04:00Back on Disney Plus, the animated What If hits Summer 2021.
04:04It is based on the classic comic book series that told alternate reality stories.
04:08A few months later, Jeremy Renner's Hot Guy hits in Fall 2021.
04:11Maybe he'll blame all the murders he committed to Endgame on the fact that his family puts
04:14mayonnaise on hot dogs.
04:15Pivoting to characters people actually care about, in a pretty big deal, Thor Love and
04:19Thunder hits November 5th, 2021.
04:22Not only will Thor be the only original Avenger to continue on with his solo movies, but Natalie
04:26Portman is returning to the series in a new capacity.
04:29The Mighty Thor.
04:30This was a huge surprise, as Kevin Feige told me the deal was made in secret six months ago
04:35and dates back to when Taika Waititi was directing Thor Ragnarok and discovered the comics of
04:39writer Jason Aaron, in which Jane Foster becomes Thor.
04:43Also, Tessa Thompson teased that Valkyrie will be revealed to be Marvel's first LGBTQ superhero
04:48who is searching for her queen now that she's the official ruler of Asgard.
04:52And that's it.
04:53Oh wait, no, there's one more thing.
04:55Blade!
04:57This was one of the biggest mic-drop moments in Hall H history.
05:00After Kevin Feige had already trotted out numerous A-list stars and announced an impressive
05:03slate, he invited two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali to the stage.
05:08While fans had been given Black Widow hats, Feige asked Ali if he was going to put on a
05:11hat.
05:12Ali did.
05:13And the hat said Blade.
05:14And the crowd went nuts.
05:16Pretty sure some people fainted.
05:17We don't really know that much about this project, but it's probably safe to assume
05:20it will be a new film version of the legendary Vampire Slayer, given the pedigree of Ali
05:24and the title role.
05:25Since it's been revealed that Doctor Strange 2 will take the MCU into the horror genre,
05:29it's also a safe assumption to think that Blade will continue that trend.
05:32But does that mean it may also be the MCU's first R-rated outing?
05:35Look, we want blood, and we want lots of it.
05:38Make it happen, Feige.
05:39So what are you most looking forward to in Marvel's Phase 4?
