00:00What was just the emotion walking in today?
00:03Yeah, interesting.
00:04I think, obviously, you don't really know exactly how you're going to feel.
00:07I think it was pretty good for me.
00:09I went downtown back by my apartment last night and walked around.
00:12That one kind of got me a little bit.
00:13So it'll be fun being back here today and try to enjoy as much as I can.
00:17Do you still have the place you're keeping it and everything?
00:19Yeah. Nice.
00:20How much more emotional will it be for you tonight?
00:23I don't know, tough to say.
00:25I think the only thing I can really compare it to is going back to Winnipeg for
00:28the first time, but I think it's a little bit different coming back here with just being
00:33the captain of the team and all the memories and stories and everything that went in for
00:38the last five, six years means a lot to me and something else.
00:42This place will always be special.
00:43It's been a year.
00:44Have you moved on from this?
00:46And I mean, this brings back memories, but have you moved on over the course of this time now?
00:51Do you believe?
00:52I think so.
00:52I think last season was obviously pretty difficult for me.
00:54Make your hearts into place and that gets moved and I'll do well with that.
00:59So I think taking the summer to kind of just go through everything,
01:02kind of process the motions and get back with my family,
01:04kind of hit the reset button was important to me.
01:07And at that point, it was time to move on and look forward and focus on Anaheim.
01:13And I'm happy to be here.
01:14Great, great group guys to be a part of a really young,
01:16talented team and had some success early and got to find a way to keep that going.
01:20In terms of the memories when you come back in the first time,
01:25is there a specific moment, vision, person, what came back first?
01:30Just so much.
01:32I think the highs and lows.
01:33I think you remember honestly a lot of the lows and sometimes how hard it is and
01:37come out on the other side.
01:38And there's so much I learned throughout my time here about myself, about hockey,
01:43about starting a family.
01:44I always have a son from New York.
01:46I told some people that, that'll always be special.
01:49Being in captain that day, obviously all those memories come back.
01:51That was an incredible, meaningful day for me.
01:55And just I think when I came into New York at the time where the team was and
01:59focusing on building something and moving forward and we had a couple cracks at it and
02:04didn't get it done and that part will always probably get me.
02:06But I think the growth of I guess the group and the team while I was here and
02:12growth of myself was something that I look back almost.
02:14Is this a night you look forward to?
02:16Is this a night that you just want to get through?
02:19There's a little bit of both for sure.
02:20I think coming back and seeing familiar faces and seeing friends in the city,
02:25that's all great.
02:26I think there's obviously emotions that come with it.
02:30There's not really a playbook for that and how to deal with it.
02:33I think I have been looking forward to it.
02:35I think I'll also be excited when it's over and we can move on to the next one and
02:39keep the season moving.
02:41Just try to enjoy it as much as I can.
02:42Have you and Chris talked about it at all?
02:44And what's it been like with him as your team?
02:47Great.
02:48I think he's the same old guy, just a goofier haircut.
02:51Yeah, I think we're both just going to try to enjoy it as much as we can.
02:54And I think it'll be different for him than it is for me, but we're both looking forward to it.
02:58Did New York come home for you?
03:01Definitely, I would say that.
03:02I think things change obviously in the course of life, but this is probably a place we'll end up back,
03:07whether it's in or out of the city.
03:10Our friends are here, our family's here.
03:11My wife worked too.
03:12She did all her education and all that here and she loves the hospital system,
03:16so there's a good chance we'll be back.
03:17What kind of impact has Chris made on this group since he joined you guys?
03:22Probably just kind of seamlessly walked in and was himself.
03:25The same impact I think he brought to the group here.
03:26He takes the time to work with younger guys and build relationships and get to know them.
03:32And off the ice, we're having a lot of fun.
03:34We spend a lot of time together obviously.
03:37Yeah, I think he's just been himself and the knowledge and the character he is.
03:41I think he's just kind of brought his genuine self to the group and people kind of gravitate towards him.
03:46You mentioned last year was difficult.
03:48Does the way that it ended change the emotions at all coming back?
03:53No, not for me.
03:53I think in the way it ended is how it ended.
03:56I think I obviously reflected a lot on that and there's people that make decisions above you.
04:01At the end of the day, you're a hockey player and this is the job I signed up for.
04:05So yeah, I think it's unfortunate I guess I'll say and didn't enjoy it in the moment.
04:09But I think it's kind of just a small piece of what was a very,
04:13very memorable and impactful five and a half years for me.
04:17So yeah, that's not the moment I focus on.
04:19I think I focus on the broader zoom out and everything in my life that's changed
04:23and the people I've met in New York and MSG and the crazy cool things I got to do as
04:28captain of the Rangers.
04:29Those are the things I guess I look back on most and remember very, very fondly.
04:34You've put it on the line there so many times.
04:36Is there a message to the fans?
04:39Just thank you.
04:40I think just how I was received here and everything I guess gone through the last five and a half years,
04:45the ups and downs. Just thank you for always kind of being there and having my back.
04:50Now that you've been in a couple of different places,
04:52is there something that you experienced here that you'd say to yourself,
04:54man, like only in New York could that happen, whether positive or negative?
04:58There's probably a lot of those.
05:01That's a tough question off the top of my head.
05:04I think just the experience and some of the opportunities you get, I think that goes back to
05:08relationships. I think of people I got the opportunity to meet here and spend time with
05:11and learn from and there's a lot of doors, I guess, that open in life just from the city
05:16and this team and this building and everything that comes with playing in New York City.
05:20If you played against former teammates once, now more tonight, what is that like? Is that weird?
05:28I don't know. I guess the more you play in the league, you kind of end up playing former teammates
05:32as you go. So I guess I'm kind of used to it a bit now. I think it'll be just more interesting
05:37seeing the jersey and playing against the jersey. I haven't done that in a while, but
05:41it's always fun to see familiar faces. How has getting out of the bright lights
05:46of New York benefited your own individual game? How has it opened up things for you online?
05:52I think there were some heavy times here. There's a lot of things you're dealing with. I think
05:58coming to Anaheim, I guess we get to play hockey and worry about playing hockey and I think
06:03there's a little bit more of a looseness and not worrying about a million things. Just kind of
06:07worrying about my hockey game and where I fit in and helping the team. I think that's been good for
06:12me. I know that you're playing against a lot of former teammates, but the team's also
06:17changed a lot. Is it weird at all for you to see how different it is in just a year?
06:22It's just kind of how hockey teams go.
06:24Yeah, it has changed, changed a whole lot. I think a lot of things you could probably
06:30go back and look at and say they've evolved a bit. We have still a lot of familiar faces and
06:35staff members and all that that I'm looking forward to seeing.
