THE power couple are back - and there's someone they would like you to meet. Dejua and Antwon last appeared on Truly back in early 2024, sharing their story as a couple with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) - a condition that means their "bones are like glass." Despite suffering over 600 broken bones between them, the pair have defied the odds to find love and live a fully independent life. But when the couple discovered that they were expecting a child, doctors told them that "any child [they would] have would have OI" and that there would be severe risks to both Dejua and the child during her pregnancy. The soon-to-be parents were optimistic and undeterred - but it would not be the smooth sailing journey they hoped for. When doctors noticed Dejua's blood pressure "skyrocketing" she was taken in for an emergency C-section, giving birth to baby Atarah and landing herself in ICU with breathing difficulties. While Dejua fought for her own life, Atarah had been born a micro-preemie at just 29 weeks, so the odds were stacked firmly against her. She remained in hospital for the first 11 months of her life and was finally discharged home five days before her first birthday. As if their health battles were not enough for the family to deal with, trouble had been brewing online after Dejua and Antwon shared videos teasing the fact that they had a new baby girl. Without even showing her face, the parents received waves of judgement, with many asking "Where is CPS?" or "Why are the doctors letting them do this?" and others calling them "selfish" for bringing a child into the world with their condition. But, as Dejua told Truly: "What people fail to realise is we're not suffering." And with the family now building a life together at home and Atarah now "thriving" at 15 months old, Antwon has one message for those who might look to judge them: "Don't judge a book by its cover. Just because we may look like we can't do this or can't do that, that doesn't mean we can't."

00:00When that's selfish.
00:01For having a baby without a condition.
00:06Mommy, did anybody want her food?
00:08I'm coming, Tara.
00:10Oh, our daughter was born with the same condition, like us.
00:14Her bones are like glass.
00:16Oh my gosh, what they gonna do?
00:19My dad was not happy when I told him I was pregnant.
00:22Were you angry with me?
00:24Yes, I got angry.
00:26And social media.
00:28People just went crazy.
00:29Oh my God, where's CPS?
00:31Why is the doctors, why is the nurses letting them do this?
00:33Do you guys want to have any more children?
00:37Hey guys, welcome back.
00:41Let's see what's new with the king and queen.
00:45What is this?
00:47It's like a mommy.
00:50Say, my name is Tara.
00:53Yes, I'm Ash Squad.
00:55And I'm Deja.
00:56And we both have one baby girl.
00:59You gonna say hi?
01:00Oh, oh, oh.
01:01You take my glasses off.
01:03Ow.
01:04Ready to eat?
01:05Ow.
01:06Are you ready?
01:08We have osteogenesis imperfecta.
01:12A bone condition that causes S to break easier than quote-unquote normal.
01:19I'm making one of your favorite snacks.
01:21Our daughter was born with the same condition like S.
01:24The genetic doctor actually told us that any child we have would have OI.
01:30And whether she has OI or not, that did not matter because we have OI.
01:37Mommy's coming.
01:38Mommy is making the food.
01:40While she was in the hospital, she was tube fed.
01:43So as soon as she got home, we just started practicing eating by mouth.
01:49Atara, look at Dada, look, look, look.
01:52The bottle actually took a while.
01:54She actually started eating through spoon first, which is crazy.
02:00That's like backwards.
02:01You see me?
02:02Look.
02:03Mommy, the baby wants her food.
02:08You see me?
02:09You see me?
02:10You see me?
02:11You see me?
02:12You see me?
02:13You see me?
02:14You see me?
02:15You see me?
02:16Atara was in the NICU for a total of 11 months.
02:21So she came home five days before her first birthday.
02:26Coming home just made it way more comfortable and easier because we have the things that we
02:32need here is amazing.
02:35Not having nurses and doctors or machines beeping 24-7.
02:40It's like we actually get to finally be parents to her.
02:45There we go.
02:46There we go.
02:47You want some more?
02:48You're greedy.
02:49So with Atara, we don't really need that much help as far as bathing, changing, feeding, dressing.
03:00All of that, we're pretty much independent.
03:02Just when it comes to lifting.
03:04Yeah, since she got bigger.
03:05Yeah, since she got bigger.
03:06Yeah, since she got bigger.
03:07When you was tiny, we would've done it all.
03:10Sometimes we sit back and think like, is she going to be taller than us?
03:14Because she's like pretty much half her height now.
03:17And she's one.
03:19So y'all want to see me so bad.
03:21Here I am.
03:22My time to shine.
03:23What are you saying to the haters?
03:26Nothing.
03:27Nothing.
03:28Good job, girl.
03:29Good job.
03:30Good job.
03:31Good job.
03:32Because you don't have to say anything.
03:33We got you, girl.
03:35She must, oh I think we had her.
03:37That's what we liked.
03:38Like let's make a video.
03:39Just announced that we had a baby.
03:41You poop on daddy.
03:42Why you poop on daddy?
03:44You poop on mommy.
03:47People just went crazy.
03:49Oh my God.
03:50We have CPS.
03:51Who is allowing this?
03:52Why is the doctors?
03:53Why are the nurses letting him do this?
03:54Look at him.
03:55He cannot even take care of himself.
03:56They would call us selfish.
03:58Yeah, seriously.
03:59Because like why would you have a baby in your condition?
04:02But the thing is, what people fail to realize, we're not suffering.
04:07Look at us.
04:08Like we're just fine.
04:10People are very disjudgmental.
04:12When you see something different, it's like, oh my God.
04:16Or is that, oh, oh.
04:19She's breaking her toy.
04:21Walk me back.
04:22Were you guys trying to get pregnant?
04:24Were you trying to have babies?
04:26We were not trying at all to get pregnant.
04:30Yeah, you know like when you're in a relationship, sometimes stuff just happens.
04:35Yes.
04:36We didn't plan it.
04:37Tell me about your pregnancy.
04:39Every appointment that I had, they told us about the risk.
04:43The baby could affect my lungs.
04:45She could be stillborn.
04:48Like I could have fractures in my hips, back, side.
04:52Towards the end of my pregnancy, my doctors started noticing my blood pressure was skyrocketing.
04:59We had to do an emergency C-section.
05:02And I was terrified.
05:05I had to wait around 3 something PM.
05:08That's when they came to me and was like, the baby is here.
05:12They brought danger in the room with me.
05:14And I was like, yeah, and all that.
05:16Happy.
05:17This is when stuff gets crazy.
05:18Because I see the nurse moving fast.
05:20Cold blue.
05:21Yeah.
05:22Everybody, one in the room.
05:23And they all were like, Deja, can you see me?
05:25Look at me.
05:26Look at me.
05:27That's when I shut down and I just started crying.
05:30So I wake up in the ICU with a tube down my throat.
05:34I was so confused.
05:36I was like, Deja, I'm here.
05:38So Attara is fine.
05:39Because I know that was her big concerns.
05:41The first time I met Attara was the same day I got out of the ICU.
05:48Like she had a breathing tube down her throat.
05:52The doctors didn't know what was going to happen as far as her breathing and everything.
05:57But she got through it.
05:59And we are here.
06:01And we will always be there.
06:03And the hospital Attara has had a few broken bones or fractures.
06:09But as far as being home, she has not had any fractures or anything like that.
06:15Seeing her grow, progress so much, it's amazing.
06:19Because it let you know, like, you're doing a good job too.
06:23How do you feel about telling your friends and family?
06:26I was more nervous to tell my family.
06:29And telling your dad you're pregnant is a bit crazy.
06:33Oh, my dad's calling.
06:35I was sweating.
06:36Yes.
06:37I was panicking.
06:38She hadn't been there.
06:39Hey, babe.
06:40Hey.
06:41Hey, Mr. John.
06:42I was scared of disappointing him.
06:45How did you feel when you found out I was pregnant?
06:49Oh, my gosh.
06:50What the hell did?
06:51When you text me and said I have something to tell you,
06:55but I don't want you to get upset.
06:58I don't want you to get angry.
07:00I knew what it was.
07:01Were you angry with me?
07:03Yes, I was.
07:04I hated you.
07:05Oh, my God.
07:07Oh, my God.
07:08I didn't know you.
07:09I don't even know this guy.
07:10I was kind of scared and nervous knowing that you had a lie and the risk.
07:15It was kind of devastating for me.
07:17But what we're doing right now is what we do every day.
07:20And I see the interaction with them and Atara is afterwards.
07:26She's smiling.
07:29I think the main thing that kept us okay was that we knew that Atara was okay.
07:35Yeah, Atara was always okay.
07:37Our baby is here and she's going to be fine.
07:39She hates clothes.
07:41Whoa.
07:42How'd it go?
07:43We're going to go make some crafts.
07:45I'm actually really excited because I want to be able to, you know, start doing family things outside.
07:52In the middle, we're going to make a crown because Atara means crown.
07:58Do you have a message for parents who may hurt you?
08:02Don't judge a book by its cover.
08:03You look like you see.
08:04We may look like we can't do this.
08:06We can't do that.
08:07Doesn't mean that we can't.
08:09You're not in our shoes.
08:12Atara is not in your baby.
08:15We are her parents and she is thriving.
08:20Are you waking up?
08:21Ha ha.
08:22Hi.
08:23Hi.
08:24Look, you see what you got mommy and daddy doing?
08:26We brought you all the way here and you fall asleep.
08:29Do you guys want to have any more children?
08:32Oh.
08:33He does.
08:36I'd say I have one more.
08:38Hopefully a boy one day.
08:39But if it happens, it happens.
08:41Yeah, I'm still like on the fence.
08:44Right now we just focus on our baby girl, Atara.
08:48Oh.
08:49Oh, James.
08:50And what are your hopes and dreams for Atara?
08:52We'd be the best parents that we can be.
08:54And she will love us just as much that we love her.
08:58Oh.
08:59Don't love it.
09:00Don't love it.
09:01My dream for Atara is for her to always know that she's that girl.
09:08Like she's been through so much.
09:11She can do anything she wants to do.
09:13She can be anyone she wants to be.
09:16Look at the crab.
09:17Yeah.
09:18Yeah.
09:19I'm a child.
09:20Not look at the winter chasing.
09:22See, look at the crab.
09:23Daddy tried to sing a song.
09:25Look at the crab.
09:26I got the crab.
09:27I got the crab.
09:28I got the crab.
09:29I got the crab.
09:30I got the crab.

09:32I got the crab.
09:33I got the crab.
09:34I got the crab.
09:35I got the crab.
09:36I got the crab.
09:37I got the crab.
