Hoppy stages the death of Red to keep a ring of pesos counterfeiters operating north of border and smuggling them into Mexico.
Transcript
00:00Here he comes, here he comes, there's the truppets, there's the drums, here he comes,
00:10Harba Lump Cassidy, here he comes.
00:15When my saddle partner Red Connors rode into Twin Rivers one day not long ago,
00:30he smiled and spoke his usual cheery greeting to everyone he passed.
00:35And yet he found himself taking an unusual interest in the familiar faces around him.
00:40Because as Red knew that somewhere among these friendly citizens was the person or persons
00:46responsible for a crime that threatened to ruin the economy of an entire community.
00:51We'd been on the trail of a clever gang of counterfeiters who were printing Mexican currency
00:55and somehow smuggling it across the border for distribution.
01:01All we knew was that the gang was working out at Twin Rivers.
01:04Who they were remained a puzzling mystery.
01:06So hoping to find a lead, we'd sent to the state capitol for a complete report
01:11on every known counterfeiter in the southwest.
01:14Red, curious as usual, had to open the envelope and make sure everything was there.
01:19Hi, Tom.
01:37Yes.
01:37Howdy, Red.
01:38Too early from a paper?
01:40Nope, right on time.
01:41Frank's bringing it in now.
01:42Good.
01:43Hi, Red.
01:44Howdy, Frank.
01:45There you are, Red.
01:46Nothing but good news.
01:47Me and Hoppy will have plenty of news for you pretty soon.
01:55Those reports just arrived from the capitol.
01:57On the, uh, green goods merchants?
01:59When Hoppy gets a hold of this, we can really go to work.
02:02Well, keep in touch with me, Red.
02:03Got to get all the news.
02:04Sure will.
02:06Howdy.
02:09Hey, Steve.
02:10Don't you and Wade want your paper today?
02:12Oh, yeah.
02:13Yeah.
02:47Let's go.
03:17Let's go.
03:47If he saw anything, we won't have to worry now.
04:00When I rode into town, I could sense the feeling of sorrow directed to me.
04:23Let's go.
04:53I saw a piece of broken horseshoe I'd found at the scene of the shooting.
04:56Then I outlined a plan that I hoped might locate the gunman who'd used red as a target.
05:01Jim agreed to watch for anyone who came in for repairs, and if the shoe fit, to contact me immediately.
05:06Hi, Frank.
05:28Oh, hello, Cassidy.
05:30Tom inside?
05:30Yeah, yeah, he's in the press room.
05:35In the back.
05:36Yeah.
05:37Hi, editor.
05:54How's it worked?
05:55Hello, Hoppy.
05:56I know everything's probably been said, Hoppy.
06:01About red, I mean.
06:03That story was just about the hardest thing I ever tried to write.
06:07You said some nice things, Tom.
06:09I hear you already had the funeral, huh?
06:12Oh, yes.
06:12Perhaps, uh, I'm sure red would have wanted it that way, nice and quiet.
06:17Still hard for me to believe it.
06:20Twin Rivers, this won't seem the same without red Connors.
06:23No, I'm afraid not.
06:25Well, I'd better get back to Bar 20.
06:27I've got a lot of work to do.
06:28Sure.
06:29Let me know if there's anything I can do.
06:31I will, Tom.
06:32Thanks.
06:33So long.
06:34So long.
06:36On the way out to the Bar 20, I tried to put the pieces of the puzzling mystery together.
06:41But they just wouldn't fall into place.
06:54Everyone in town seemed quite sincere in their expressions of sorrow over red's untimely death.
07:10There was only one man I knew who wasn't upset.
07:14Matter of fact, he seemed to be getting quite a kick out of it.
07:19Hi, Hoppy.
07:21Hiya, red.
07:22How you feeling?
07:23Oh, I'm in pretty good shape for a dead man.
07:27Hey, look at this.
07:28Twin Rivers today mourns the loss of one of its most beloved citizens, Red Connors.
07:34Hey, they spelled my name right.
07:35Yeah, but when Tom McLean finds out you're not really dead, they're going to spell your name Mud.
07:40You know, I must have been pretty well thought of around town.
07:42Look at that.
07:44Don't believe everything you read in the papers.
07:47Well, Tate, everybody can read his own obituary.
07:49Sure gives a fellow a strange feeling.
07:51I hope your plan's worth it, Hoppy.
07:54Ah, it's worth it if it works.
07:56But we're going to have a lot of explaining to do to those people in Twin Rivers when they find out you're still around.
08:00Yeah.
08:02Hey, what'd you do with yesterday's paper?
08:03I looked all over the house for it.
08:06Why, I didn't see it.
08:07Didn't you get it?
08:08It was in my saddlebag with the reports them two gunmen stole.
08:12Well, your saddlebag was empty when I found you on the road.
08:15Oh, well, maybe they wanted some reading matter, too.
08:17Yeah.
08:21Well, say, have you heard any more from that Mexican treasury agent?
08:25Raymond Torres?
08:26Yeah.
08:26Maybe here in the morning.
08:27Good.
08:28Hey, I can practice up on my Spanish.
08:30By the way, I hope he's having better luck on his side of the border than we are.
08:34Yeah, it couldn't be any worse than ours.
08:36Hey, you know, the more I think of it, the less I like this idea of playing dead.
08:39I don't go crazy just sitting around the house.
08:42If you get any ideas about leaving the house, then that newspaper story is liable to come true.
08:48Get what I mean?
08:54Most beloved citizen.
08:57Even if I did have to die to get it.
09:09Raymond, come in.
09:20Wednesday, Senor Cassidy.
09:22I came through Twin Rivers, Senor.
09:24You have my most sincere sympathy.
09:26The death of your compadre came as a great shock.
09:28I think you'd better sit down.
09:30You're due for another shock.
09:31Okay.
09:34Oh, yes, Senor Torres.
09:36Diablo.
09:37It cannot be.
09:39I told you you should sit down.
09:42The story in the newspaper, it did not happen?
09:46Yeah, part of it was true.
09:47We just added the part about the obituary.
09:50Won't you sit down, please?
09:52I do not understand.
09:54Why do you do this?
09:55To keep these counterfeiters operating.
09:58Yeah, because they think I looked at them reports from the Capitol.
10:01And so long as he's dead, they'll keep working out at Twin Rivers.
10:04Oh, I see.
10:05If the gang knew Red was still alive, they would move on.
10:10And all our weeks of work would have to begin all over again.
10:13That's right.
10:14Bueno.
10:14Your plan is wise, Senor Cassidy.
10:16The continued activity of these men is our only chance of catching them.
10:21Have you had any luck?
10:22No.
10:23Everyone is thoroughly searched before crossing the border.
10:26I have undercover operators everywhere.
10:28But up to now, they have found nothing.
10:30I'll bet I could.
10:31What are you talking about?
10:35Well, I'm talking about being an undercover operator.
10:38It'll be easy with everybody thinking me dead.
10:40Well, you will be dead if you run around in that outfit.
10:53See?
10:53Very dead.
10:55No.
10:56I put a little black mustache on, and with my vast knowledge of the Spanish language,
11:00I'll bet nobody would recognize me.
11:02Who is this, Senor?
11:05Como estes, Houston?
11:08See what I mean?
11:09Right now, you couldn't tell me from a native.
11:11Right now, I couldn't tell you from an idiot.
11:13Well, think of all the help I could be.
11:15I could do an awful lot of investigating.
11:16You mean you could do a lot of awful investigating.
11:19Now, just forget the whole thing.
11:21You'll have to upset our whole plan.
11:23Si.
11:23If anyone should recognize you, everything would be ruined.
11:27Oh, I still think it'd work.
11:31Wait a minute.
11:36It's Jim Wood.
11:38You better get in the back room.
11:39Jim wouldn't say anything.
11:40Maybe not, but I don't want to give anybody a chance to talk.
11:43Hoppy, he came in.
11:52I...
11:53That's all right, Jim.
11:54This is Raymond Torres, the Mexican treasure department.
11:56Now, what is it?
11:57Two fellas came in.
11:58One of them had a pony with a broken shoe,
12:00and it fit exactly with the one you gave me.
12:02Good work.
12:03Did you recognize the men?
12:04Nope.
12:05Seen them around town, so I hopped out here as fast as I could.
12:08Did you do the work I asked you to?
12:10Sure did.
12:11Nice as you please.
12:12Good.
12:13Are the men still in town?
12:14Nope.
12:15They headed out.
12:16Thanks.
12:16We'll be out in just a minute.
12:18All right, Raymond.
12:19Those counterfeiters are going to have a couple of shadows.
12:22Senor Cassidy, you are full of mysteries today.
12:25How do you plan to pick up their tracks from hundreds of others in the street?
12:29Thanks to Jim there, it's going to be simple.
12:32Here we go.
12:41Ah!
12:42There you are, Hoppy.
12:48Real fancy job.
12:50Oh, that's wonderful.
12:51You'd have to be blind to lose that trail.
12:53Well, congratulations, Senor.
12:55Your American ingenuity knows no bounds.
12:58Well, let's ride and see if it pays off.
13:00Thanks, Jim.
13:00As Raymond and I rode the trail of the distinctive tracks, it became more and more apparent that the two men we were following were headed for the border.
13:13But without the clearly defined marks that the blacksmith had cut into the shoe, we never would have known which direction the counterfeiters had taken.
13:24When the tracks led off the road, we figured that our prey was not far ahead.
13:37The fresh horseshoe fence gave evidence that the tracks were just minutes old.
13:42We spotted the two men in the valley below.
13:56But from what we could see, they weren't carrying anything out of the ordinary.
14:02Certainly nothing that suggested counterfeit money.
14:04You could see.
14:12Oh, God.
14:13You could see.
14:44Diablo. That man is Juan Ortega. Do you know him? He's been in and out of every jail in Mexico. Look at that.
15:14A strange transaction, senor.
15:25They're coming back this way. Let's get out of sight.
15:28Should we not make an arrest, senor?
15:42No, they're headed for Twin Rivers. Ortega's the one we want now. He's carrying the answer and the proof we need.
15:48But the border patrol, he cannot escape their search.
15:51He's been doing it. Let's find out how.
15:54Let's go.
16:24The border patrol stopped Ortega all right.
16:26And the wagon was searched from top to bottom.
16:38But the simplicity of the counterfeiters' plan paid off again.
16:43The border patrol looked through everything except the one item that was practically under his nose.
16:49And because it was so well hidden, another batch of counterfeit money passed into Mexico.
16:55With Juan Ortega's smile no doubt concealing the urge to laugh out loud.
16:59But his smile was just about to fade.
17:04When Ramon and I caught him, we had all the evidence we needed to put the whole gang behind bars.
17:26Ramon took Ortega into custody and I headed back to Twin Rivers.
17:29Ramon took Ortega called the dad Informationen in at the bottom.
17:52Oh, and it's these, senior blacksmith.
18:08You are busy with the work, no?
18:10That's right.
18:12What can I do for you?
18:14I am seeking information.
18:16I have been told you are a man to be trusted.
18:20Uh-huh.
18:20My name is Valentia.
18:23I am working on a very secret investigation with Ophelon Cassidy.
18:27And the counterfeiting?
18:28Si, si.
18:30And the murder of a very fine fellow.
18:32Red Connors, you mean?
18:34Si.
18:35You know him?
18:37Sure.
18:38I know him.
18:40Too bad.
18:41I sure feel sorry for Hoppy.
18:44It seems to me these sorrows should be for senior Connors, no?
18:47Well, I figure there's no sense crying over them that's going on.
18:52Maybe you did not like it, senior Red.
18:55Sure.
18:56I was fond of old Red.
18:58Even though he did talk too much.
19:00Nice guy.
19:01Si, as I say, he's a very fine fellow.
19:04Hey.
19:05That's funny.
19:08Si.
19:09Those two hombres.
19:13Those are the men Hoppy set out the trail.
19:15And they come back alone?
19:17That don't look too good.
19:23Hasta la vista, senior.
19:24I must find out what this means.
19:25Hey.
19:25The old man's in the press room.
19:31What took you so long?
19:32What's your hurry?
19:33Everything go all right?
19:34Perfect, as always.
19:35Good.
19:36Good.
19:37Say, you gonna run off more bills tonight?
19:40Sure.
19:40The old man's not around.
19:45Buenos dias, senor.
19:47Something I can do for you?
19:49A newspaper, por favor.
19:50What do you want a newspaper for?
19:53You can't read English.
19:55Si, I understand a little.
20:00Hey.
20:01Senor.
20:02What did you take that paper off the bottom for?
20:05I have no reason to use habit.
20:06It's a bad habit.
20:08I don't understand.
20:09I do nothing wrong.
20:10I just poor Macy.
20:11Your accent's poorer.
20:13He ain't no Mexican.
20:14Let's find out what he is.
20:16Connors.
20:16Keep that surprised look, boys, and don't move.
20:19He did.
20:20Not nearly as dead as you'll be if you don't tell me where Cassidy is.
20:24Cassidy?
20:25He rode out on the trail of you two and he hasn't come back yet.
20:28Perfect, you said.
20:29Just like always, with Cassidy right behind you.
20:31Boss, we didn't see him.
20:35Red.
20:36I ain't a ghost, Tom.
20:38Oh, you...
20:39Wait, get outside and watch for Cassidy.
20:42In the press room, bother him.
20:49What do we do, boss?
20:50We get out right now.
20:56Frank, what's this?
20:58Does this answer your question?
21:00Currency plates.
21:01You've been printing that counterfeit money right here.
21:04Don't get excited, Tom.
21:05You're not going to live to write the story.
21:08Hoppy warned me that newspaper story would come true.
21:11Hoppy, Hoppy.
21:20What is it, Jim?
21:21Hoppy, we saw those two hombres ride into town.
21:23We?
21:24Well, who else knew about it?
21:25Senor Valencia.
21:27Valencia?
21:28The fellow you're working with.
21:32Wait a minute.
21:33What did this Senor Valencia look like?
21:35The heavyset fellow he was.
21:37Didn't get too good a look at him, really.
21:40Kind of hit his face.
21:41Where did this Senor Valencia go?
21:44He followed those two hombres into the newspaper office.
21:46The newspaper office.
21:49Here, hold the horse.
22:01That must be Cassidy.
22:03The back way.
22:03Let's go.
22:33Oh, my God.
23:03All right, boys, the printing party's over.
23:24Captain, time.
23:25Red and I were both slated for headlines.
23:28Hoppy, how'd you ever figure to come over here?
23:30We just found out Frank Harris was doing the counterfeiting.
23:32I know. I just read it in the newspaper.
23:36Look here.
23:37Holy cats.
23:39The counterfeit money.
23:41Printed and put right in with the newspaper.
23:43That's right. I had a good idea.
23:45Frank here printed it up and put it in a copy of one of the papers.
23:48Then put it where the boys would be sure and get a hold of it.
23:51Somehow you got a hold of it before they did.
23:54Hey, Hoppy.
23:55Those papers on the counter, I picked the one off the bottom.
23:57That figures.
24:00Any normal person would start from the top of the stack down.
24:04That's what Frank and his boys here counted on.
24:07They'll have plenty of time in jail to figure out what happened.
24:10All right, Tom.
24:11Get on your feet.
24:12Get them out of here, Tom.
24:13Hey, Hoppy.
24:18Do you mean that I ain't normal?
24:20Any red-headed cowpoke that would try to pass himself off as Senor Valencia can't be normal.
24:27No comprende English, Senor.
24:28Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
24:32Hi, my little partners.
24:34I want to ask you a very serious question.
24:38Are you afraid of policemen?
24:40You're not, huh?
24:43Well, that's good.
24:45You shouldn't be.
24:47Always remember that those men have had a lot of training,
24:52have put in a lot of years to learn how to help protect you.
24:56And one more thing.
24:57Don't ever call a policeman a cop.
25:00He doesn't like it and it doesn't sound good.
25:03Respect him as he does you.
25:06Call him a police officer.
25:08And see how much nicer he'll be.
25:10I'll see you next week.
25:13In the meantime, don't forget to go to Sunday school.
25:16There he goes on his way
25:22Down the moon that trails to where Cowboy's Ray
