Man jailed for 30 years for murdering woman in 2023

The ACT Supreme Court has sentenced a Sri Lankan national to 30 years jail for the murder of his colleague at the Canberra Zoo and Aquarium in December 2023. Jude Widjesinghe pleaded guilty to the murder in July.

00:04Workmen rushed to help when they heard Shawang Chodan's screams.

00:08But she was locked in a straw room with her killer.

00:11Jude Widgesinger and Miss Chodan worked in the kitchen at the zoo as chefs.

00:16The court heard he developed a pathological infatuation with her that ended in tragedy.

00:23Justice Lucy McCallum said Miss Chodan's last moments must have been terrifying.

00:28But she said despite his mental health problems, the court could not ignore the fact the crime had been premeditated.

00:37Jude Widgesinger has been in jail since he was arrested in 2023.

00:41He won't be eligible for parole until at least 2043.
