00:00I thought, wow, you know, this could be the end of Kai.
00:22Show me your hands!
00:24Show me your hands right now!
00:25Hey, get out of the tree!
00:27Hands!
00:28Show me your f***ing hands!
00:30You're a f***ing asshole!
00:38Get out!
00:40Get her out of there!
00:42It was scary.
00:43I knew that time was running out.
00:50Yeah, I'm talking!
00:51Come outside!
00:51On U.S. Route 60, first grade teacher Charmaine Fernando is driving to work and recording on her dash cam.
01:20So that morning, I was teaching at Tempe, and that was about a 25-minute drive with no traffic.
01:25I'm on the 60, and then I ended up behind the cement truck.
01:31It was very scary.
01:48My heart was pounding.
01:50He hit the brakes, and then he started to slow down-ish, and then he veered off towards the left.
02:02When he hit the truck, the truck went flying up on the side, and then he hits, like, four other cars.
02:11And then, obviously, the truck was on fire, which was terrifying.
02:18Less than a mile behind Charmaine, police officer Brian Laurison is traveling to the city of Chandler to begin his shift.
02:28That morning, I just had this feeling, ah, just take the 60 today, and I'm like, ah, that'd be quick and easy.
02:37All of a sudden, boom, the red taillights were on.
02:39That's when I knew something wasn't right.
02:49That's when I knew something wasn't right.
03:03My mind was telling me, whoever was in that burning truck probably got out.
03:17I used my motorcycle to block that lane, and I grabbed my flashlight, and I was signaling for the traffic to go around us.
03:25I saw hands in the windshield, and I'm like, oh, they're trapped.
03:43It hit me.
03:52A vehicle on fire, it could be a ticking time bomb.
03:55Anything's possible.
03:58Here, here, here, get out of the way, get out of the way.
04:10I started hitting the window, and I felt like I was hitting a wall, and it was just like it wasn't breaking.
04:18And I saw hands, I hear screaming and yelling, help me, save me.
04:24Get out of the way.
04:25I felt like I was battling time at that point.
04:33I wasn't thinking of the heat.
04:35I wasn't thinking of anything other than, I'm not going to let this person die.
04:38I saw her leg coming out, and I'm like, okay, she's getting out.
04:58And all of a sudden, I turn around, and the truck falls back on all four tires.
05:07It was scary.
05:08I knew that time was running out.
05:10Get her out of there.
05:11Get her out of there.
05:12Get her out.
05:13Get her out, dude.
05:14Come on.
05:15Come on.
05:16Come on.
05:17Come on.
05:18Come on.
05:19I looked, and I saw the firefighter.
05:26I'm like, he just appeared out of nowhere.
05:29Seeing him was like, you know, an angel, if you will.
05:36Heoria firefighter, Asa Paglia is also traveling to work on the 60 that morning.
05:43I had noticed a column of smoke, a black column of smoke.
05:49I know this truck was fully involved on fire.
05:55I had no other choice in my head but to stop and help.
06:00Car fires are some of the hottest fires that you can encounter.
06:04A car fire can burn upwards of 1,000 to 2,000 degrees.
06:09The tires can explode, the fuel tank can explode.
06:14Get out!
06:15Get out!
06:16Get out!
06:17And I saw the woman's legs kind of get thrown back into the vehicle.
06:22I definitely felt some adrenaline, some desperation.
06:29I saw a faint glimpse of her feet and I thought, I got to make this quick.
06:33Get her out of there.
06:34Get her out.
06:35Get her out, dude.
06:36Get back from the truck!
06:37Get back!
06:38Get back!
06:39Get back!
06:40Get back!
06:41Get back!
06:42I can't imagine what she was feeling when she was feeling that heat and struggling to breathe.
06:57When she came out, that was a sigh of relief, you know?
07:04Hold that!
07:06Hold that!
07:07Hold that!
07:08Okay, relax, relax, relax, relax.
07:11We got you!
07:12We got you!
07:13Anybody else in there?
07:14No!
07:15My next concern was, did she have kids in the car?
07:18Is there anybody in the backseat?
07:20But she said no.
07:21I later found out that she had just dropped her kids off right before this happened.
07:25Let's get away from the truck.
07:28Help me.
07:29You good, man?
07:30Yeah, we're good.
07:31We're good.
07:32I'm glad you're here, brother.
07:35I was just going.
07:36Right here, it's good.
07:37Right here, it's good.
07:38All right.
07:39I said something to the fact that he was like, brother, I'm so glad you're here.
07:42But it was, it was, I was so happy to see it.
07:47You'll be okay, sweetheart.
07:48You'll be okay.
07:49It's just tires going off, that's all.
07:50All right.
07:51You're okay.
07:52It's really good.
07:53I just held on to her.
07:55I was pretty much relieved.
07:57You know, we got her out.
08:00So...
08:01The driver of the cement truck is cited by the Arizona Department of Public Safety
08:13for failing to control the vehicle and avoid a collision.
08:18The pickup driver, mother of three, Amy Ruiz, is taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.
08:26Oh, God.
08:30One day later, she is reunited with her rescuers.
08:40We got you.
08:43It felt so good hearing that from you.
08:46My heart felt full seeing their faces again.
08:48There's really no words to describe it.
08:50What they did was heroic, courageous, just brave.
08:56It's just insane.
08:58Insane.
08:59When I heard the driver was okay, I just breathed a sigh of relief.
09:06Thank God she didn't die.
09:08You know, just going to work after I was crying.
09:12Like, it was crazy.
09:14It was a horrible thing to see.
09:16Would I do it all over again?
09:24Yeah, absolutely.
09:25Would I do it for anybody?
09:26Absolutely, I would.
09:27Because that's what we do.
09:36I know.
09:37I thought you're using a two-year-old's chief.
09:39I thought you were a one-year-old.
09:44I thought you were a two-year-old.
09:4712F, 5F Central, traffic stop, Florida.
10:03Actually, we have 12F northbound Nova from Isabel, Florida.
10:07Nissan, white male driver, white female passenger.
10:10I'll be shut down.
10:17All right, stand by. They're going down Knox Drive.
10:22A routine traffic stop is now a pursuit
10:24after the driver and his female passenger make a getaway.
10:30It is fairly common for the person that's fleeing
10:33to drive erratically to try to lose the police.
10:39And northbound Isabel now.
10:41I'm a good way behind him, but I can see him turning.
10:4711 are sticks approved.
10:51All right, he's pretty high rate of speed northbound
10:59and isabel, I'm going to lose him.
11:08All right, he's pretty high rate of speed northbound
11:11and isabel, I'm going to lose him.
11:13A pursuit is underway in Port Orange, Florida
11:15after a driver failed to stop for police.
11:209 in the morning, someone fleeing from a traffic stop
11:23is absolutely out of the ordinary.
11:25He's come up to Commonwealth in just a second,
11:27but I'm way behind him now.
11:29So, about 4 and 5 Central, can you put this call on holding?
11:32Put me on that.
11:34I'm at Ridgewood, Commonwealth.
11:38All right, I think he kept going north past Commonwealth.
11:41He's way up there.
11:42It looks like he's going to go all the way out
11:44where it comes out to Ridgewood.
11:46Space air briefings out there.
11:50Usually, they have a good reason to run from us.
11:53They may have just killed somebody.
11:55They may have 20 pounds of cocaine strapped under their car.
11:59Unit solve at Central Park, Bruce Creek.
12:02And it's a silver.
12:05Okay, guys, let's try and layer up some sticks here,
12:07space them out a little bit with each other.
12:08Let's try and layer up some sticks here.
12:19Officers up ahead tried to disable the fleeing car.
12:35Here it comes.
12:36Big grass.
12:36Big grass.
12:37Six-two-five, coming your way.
12:41But the driver takes evasive action.
12:48Air one, I got the visual.
12:52Let them call it.
12:54Go to the end.
12:54The point is going to be a little bit.
12:56Seven-five.
12:58The Volusia Sheriff's Office helicopter is mobilized
13:01and quickly locates the suspect.
13:03Looks like he just struck a car.
13:05Everyone, you have them.
13:17You just went southbound.
13:20Yeah, southbound on standby.
13:23Looks like Nob Hill.
13:24South on Nob Hill.
13:26Ten-four.
13:26Ten-four.
13:27He's pulling into a yard.
13:36He's in the grass, pulling in behind the house.
13:40All right, can I get somebody with me?
13:42There's a lot of things going through your mind at that point.
13:48There's a lot of things going through your mind at that point.
14:03We don't know if he's going to run into somebody's house.
14:06We don't know if he's had a gun in the car
14:09and he's taking the gun with them.
14:11Yeah, get on Spruce Creek Woods Drive.
14:14He's running in that direction.
14:17In the car, in the yard.
14:19In the yard.
14:22Backyard.
14:23Good Well done.
14:24I don't know.
14:46Hayden, Hayden.
14:48Go with NW here.
14:49There's a box right here in the woods here.
15:03Are you good?
15:08Hey, are you 10-4?
15:11The girl was taken into custody pretty quickly once we ran up into the backyard.
15:19Now, when we have this male out standing, we're trying to figure out where he may have gone.
15:31Show me your hands!
15:33Come out with your hands up!
15:37It's still tense.
15:38We don't know if he's just going to pop out with a gun when we're not looking.
15:47He's ducking down somewhere or he ran this way.
15:49Come out with your hands up!
15:53My adrenaline's pumping.
15:55My heart's racing.
15:59The search for the suspect now moves into thick woodland, making it difficult for officers to find him.
16:07You're one of your eyes on him.
16:09No, he went into trees.
16:10We lost him as soon as he bailed.
16:12Yeah, he came straight, he went straight into the woods, straight from the car.
16:16Canine officer Kevin Nugent and his dog Draco joined the hunt.
16:28I brought the dog up to the last known area where the suspect was, gave him the command to track,
16:34and then basically free-lining the dog, looking for the dog to show a sign that he's, you know, on odor.
16:41The way scent works is basically the skin has different chemicals in it that put off a specific odor to you as an individual.
16:54So the dogs are able to recognize that scent, as well as ground disturbance.
16:59It's super exciting going on a canine track.
17:21Dog's going crazy, sniffing the ground, you're having to scan all around you because you are the eyes and ears for that canine handle.
17:32Alright, we've got some super inside.
17:34I don't know if they're going to be some officers or the suspect on something that looks like a crossing.
17:38I see some footprints and the dogs showing a good proximity to odor in that area.
17:58Yeah, there was some on this side of the canal.
18:01I just don't know where exactly they were at.
18:02I never saw them back here, where they came in at exactly.
18:05Wait, wait, wait, what is that up in the tree?
18:08There's a shoe up there.
18:10Up in the tree, Oaks, you're right here on the backside.
18:12There's a shoe in the body.
18:14Show me your hands!
18:15Show me your hands right now!
18:18If you move, you will be bit by the canine!
18:21Do not move!
18:24Do not move or you'll be bit!
18:28All of a sudden, I see our suspect up in the tree, just kind of frozen there.
18:34Hands up!
18:36If you come off this tree, you will be bit!
18:37Hands up!
18:38If you come off this tree, you will be bit!
18:39Hands up!
18:40Pulling down slowly!
18:41If you try to run, that dog will bite you!
18:47Do not run when you get down!
18:49I got a taser on you!
18:50I got a taser on you!
18:54Keep working your way down!
18:55Crawl down right now!
18:56If you try to run, you're going to get dog bit or tased!
19:01You better slowly come down that tree with nothing in your hand!
19:06Hands up, Steve!
19:06We know you can hear it!
19:11Crawl down!
19:13Crawl down!
19:14If you jump, it's going to hurt!
19:19Don't jump or it's going to hurt!
19:21If you run, the dog will bite you!
19:22It's going to hurt as well!
19:23Crawl down the tree right now!
19:31He started crawling farther out in the tree, then he's getting you to 18 feet up,
19:3620 feet up, probably 25 feet up at the highest.
19:39You're going to end up breaking your leg!
19:40Get out of the tree!
19:41Plus he's going to get out of the tree!
19:44No, he's literally in a tree right now trying to climb like hardly ever!
19:50Oh, .
19:51You're flying right here!
19:52Stay dressed!
19:53Did I dip in?
19:54If you dropped, you better stay right where you're at!
19:55That dog is going to bite you!
20:06Oh, .
20:08You're flying right here!
20:09Stay dressed!
20:10When you drop, you better stay right where you're at or that dog will bite you.
20:20Don't move!
20:21Don't move!
20:22Do not move!
20:23He just sprung up like a kangaroo and started running.
20:28Hurry up!
20:29Hurry up!
20:30Hurry up!
20:31Ah!
20:32What the hell is that?
20:33Don't run like that!
20:35I got you.
20:36Get the dog down.
20:37Here, get the dog down.
20:39He's fine.
20:40The dog can see.
20:41Good boy.
20:42I got him.
20:43I got him.
20:44I got him.
20:45Just hold that arm.
20:46I got him.
20:48You're an idiot, dude.
20:49Hold it.
20:50Hold it.
20:51Hang on.
20:52Dude, how dumb are you?
20:53Good boy.
20:54Good boy.
21:00The suspect is identified as Jonathan Kaiser.
21:04When he failed to stop for police, he was driving an unregistered vehicle with a suspended license.
21:11He is charged with multiple offenses, including a felony of recklessly fleeing and attempting to elude officers.
21:18Kaiser is sentenced to 21 months and nine days in prison.
21:23The female passenger is not convicted of any offenses.
21:32It was incredibly satisfying to get him.
21:35It was a lot of hard work.
21:37We were out there for a long time, so we probably were out tracking with the dog for well over an hour.
21:44The way he was driving, it really is fortunate that nobody got hurt from any of it.
21:49And I couldn't be happier with the way things turned out.
21:53When I was at 9-1-1, what's the location of the emergency?
22:13My granddaughter had a boyfriend who's been violent with her.
22:17All of a sudden, our door was unlocked.
22:19He walked up into her bedroom, plugged the gun in her face during the killing.
22:23We're running out of the house, and now he's outside somewhere with a gun.
22:32With an armed suspect on the loose, Gwinnett County police units and the helicopter
22:37quickly scramble to the location to search for him.
22:40We're already flying this night, and we hear the call go out.
22:44And because we were already in the air, we were first on scene.
22:48At night time, for us to keep eyes on an individual, we use our Lear 380 HD camera.
22:54We have infrared capabilities at night time.
22:57Everyone's clear.
22:59I always check the instant location and work my way out.
23:02Our job as the aviation unit is to essentially be a command post from the sky guide units to where they need to go.
23:11officers are now on scene.
23:12Officers are now on scene, and talking with the victim to get a description of the suspect.
23:20The officers are now on scene, and talking with the victim
23:23to get a description of the suspect.
23:25Hey, what is he wearing?
23:27Do you know what he's wearing?
23:29Bring him into the black shirt,
23:31and he has a baby's blue backpack.
23:33A blue backpack, Rachel?
23:34It's a black gun.
23:36In the beginning of our relationship,
23:38Levi was actually pretty good.
23:40But it started to become very controlling.
23:44I could tell, like, something wasn't right with him at all.
23:48After I had finally broke up with him,
23:51he turns around, pulls a gun out of his waistband,
23:54puts it to my head, and says, I'm going to blow this.
23:59All I could think was, my grandma's going to find me dead.
24:05And that's when my grandma busted through the door,
24:07and I ran out the door and just cried,
24:11and waited until he got out of the house.
24:15412 radio.
24:17Update 78 is gray shorts, black long sleeve,
24:20navy blue backpack.
24:23421 is also headed over.
24:25Above them, the police helicopter continues
24:28to scan the nearby streets.
24:30I saw a subject peek around the backside of the home,
24:40kind of in between two homes, and then walked back behind
24:44the home to take cover.
24:46So I immediately updated that information
24:48to the ground officers there.
24:51Chief pilot Lipinski tracks the suspect,
24:53while pilot senior Diego Galasso controls the helicopter.
24:57After we spot him, we start getting resources
25:00to try to lock that location down.
25:04At the end of this, just pulling up right out
25:06your driver's side door, stop right there, stop right there.
25:08There you go.
25:09That house right off your back left tire, just keep walking straight.
25:11Maybe stay right there, and we can get somebody else here.
25:15All right, he's coming back around here.
25:17Come back.
25:18All right, he's running down behind.
25:20.
25:48You don't know what's going on in a suspect's mind
25:51at that moment.
25:53My biggest concern is that they actually use the firearm,
25:56and they harm somebody.
26:06Winnett County officers are in pursuit of an armed suspect
26:09who has assaulted and threatened his ex-girlfriend.
26:14Let's just get a printer set up since K9's coming.
26:17.
26:22Winnett County officer, stop right there,
26:23if that's you, the SUV.
26:26To help with the manhunt, K9 unit Corporal Carlyle
26:30and his dog Kai are dispatched to the scene.
26:32.
26:34But they had a guy that was on the ground on foot,
26:42and they need a canine to come track him.
26:45We're going to use Kai, and we're going to go in
26:47and find this individual.
26:58The bond I have with Kai is, it's a special one.
27:04Kai is the best police dog.
27:06And he's my buddy.
27:08.
27:10.
27:11.
27:12.
27:14.
27:16.
27:17.
27:18.
27:19.
27:20.
27:21.
27:22.
27:23.
27:24.
27:26I'm on a K9, 12 o'clock, just jumped the fence 50 feet into the woods.
27:45I had a nice clear heat signature of him, and then as soon as he went into the woods, it was slowly going away.
27:56So the fence to your right was the yard that he hopped the fence, so if you want to go over that fence there, if not, just follow that fence line all the way back.
28:12When we hear an individual goes into the wood line, we're going to be at a disadvantage because it's heavily dense woods and stark.
28:26The thing is, is the dog, they're down low to the ground, so they can get through that a little easier because they're so low to the ground where we're having to bob and weave and duck and crawl and cuss and everything else to get through that.
28:51The air helicopter was telling us that we were getting pretty close, but it's really, it's so thick to the point where I don't see anything.
29:12I'm looking at K9, and I don't see him anymore.
29:20יא!
29:37Here, K9!
29:40K9?
29:42K9!
29:43K9!
29:45Here, bud!
29:49After the the volley of fire it goes dark and
30:19I remember pulling on the lead and I just meet resistance.
30:37Kai, here!
30:44Kai, here!
30:47Where's he at?
30:58Kai, here!
31:00Kai, here!
31:02He's over here!
31:04Show me your hands!
31:06Show me your hands now!
31:09Show me your hands!
31:11Show me your hands!
31:13Put your hands up now!
31:16I could see Kai in my peripheral.
31:18He was just to his right of the suspect.
31:23And I could see him kind of just flaring around a little bit.
31:27So I knew he was still alive at that time.
31:31Kai, here!
31:34Is that you?
31:35No.
31:36Okay.
31:37Alright.
31:41He's hit.
31:43Show me your hands!
31:45Show me your hands!
31:47Show me your hands!
31:48Is he down?

32:24Officer Sinchek and Officer Otillo immediately moved in and an effected arrest on the suspect.
32:38Let's get him out of here.
32:40All right, okay. Come on, man. Come on.
32:46Hey, you want to help me carry him? All right, on three. One, two, three, lift.
32:49Once we approached him, made sure they had him in custody.
32:57We have to offer him first aid if he needs first aid, and then we'll deal with Kai.
33:04Unfortunately, the dog is last. It's, you know, officer rescue, suspect rescue, and then decaying.
33:13Yeah, he's in. I'm trying to figure out.
33:37What's up? It's on the side somewhere.
33:42Somewhere on the side.
33:46Can't find him.
33:48This is K-9-4, K-9-2. I'm trying to get Mark to get on everybody.
33:51They can throw it up for you.
33:55We stayed on the suspect as he was brought out, and officers started
33:59giving, providing the suspect with first aid.
34:01Stay with me. What's your name?
34:04What's your name? Levi.
34:05I don't know if there's actually room.
34:08Levi, we're getting help coming.
34:14Come here, buddy.
34:18I need to get the dog out.
34:21You guys clear, Pat.
34:27Come on, buddy.
34:29I don't know how bad his injuries were.
34:31There was some blood. I could see the blood.
34:37And I was preparing myself that this is probably not going to be a good outcome.
34:42It's all right, buddy.
34:44It's okay, buddy.
34:45I don't know.
34:53Corporal Carlisle is desperately trying to get his K-9 partner, Kai, to a vet, after he was shot at close range.
35:00I just look over them really quick and I make the I make the call that there was nothing that I
35:29could do right then and there that was gonna do make a difference
35:59we were lights and sirens we had officers throughout the county in the
36:15cities they were blocking every intersection I don't think we had it we
36:19didn't stop once probably said his name a million times on the way from the scene
36:38to the hospital
36:54and I thought wow this this could be it you know this could be the end of Kai
37:08you're coming up pretty steady on this elbow
37:24yeah I call it down right
37:28Go right out for me, let's go this way.
37:31Come on, buddy.
37:32Come on, buddy.
37:33Good boy.
37:34All right.
37:35Good boy.
37:39Do you want to get shopping?
37:41I don't know.
37:42OK.
37:43You got one here?
37:44I see right here.
37:45It's way heavy on the elbow.
37:46OK.
37:47Maybe something there?
37:49I don't know.
37:50OK.
37:51So at the start, I'm going to need you to do some full body x-rays.
37:53See where it is.
37:54That one.
37:55But what in the air, where it is?
37:56I do worry because when we pull him out,
37:59the amount of blood that he starts,
38:01I see that he's actually losing a step back.
38:04And I think that's the first time I realized
38:07that he got shot twice.
38:09All right.
38:10You got it.
38:11All right.
38:12Let's get a blood structure.
38:13Let's check.
38:14I need it.
38:15I need it.
38:16I need it.
38:17Hold on.
38:18You want to pull that one over now?
38:19I guess.
38:20It's a bully.
38:21What?
38:22Yeah, I got it with my trunk.
38:24I want him to hear my voice and, you know, know that with all the other voices going on in there,
38:35help hear stuff.
38:37You start thinking about, you know,
38:40like the first time you met, the first time you're like, you found somebody, the first time you found a big, big narcotic find,
38:56all the training you've been through, all the headaches, the tears, the frustration, the everything.
39:03You start thinking about how he destroys your house
39:07and grabbed ahold of the grill cover the other day and all that good stuff.
39:11And all that stuff just comes all together.
39:14All those memories start coming in, just start flooding in.
39:33To lose a canine partner is like you're losing a friend.
39:39Come here, buddy.
39:49Aw, so good, buddy.
39:58Everyone has, you know, their hero, you know, whatever.
40:02There's Superman, Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, whatever.
40:07But he's, he's my hero.
40:12He doesn't know it, but he is.
40:15Best thing about it is I get to see him every day, so.
40:19Come on, buddy.
40:21The perpetrator, Levi Kennedy Bryan, makes a full recovery.
40:33He is charged with nine criminal counts, including causing serious or debilitating injury to a police dog.
40:40He pleads guilty and is sentenced to eight years in prison and 17 years on probation.
40:46I think the one thing that I really took away from that night is that it can happen to you.
40:55It's a black shirt, and he has the name of his blue backpack.
40:58Okay, blue backpack, gray shirt.
41:00It's a black girl.
41:01The slightest sign of violence you need to leave because it can turn into this in the bleak of an eye.
41:09I don't think that the paranoia will ever leave, but I'm still living and I'm fine.
41:16And he didn't scare me into a hole or take any of my life quality away.
41:26He ruined his, not mine.
