The Sons of Zebedee: James the Great and John the Apostle

These are the Sons of Thunder.

00:00Oh, shalom, friends, brothers and sisters. Welcome back. Today I want to talk about John

00:07and James, better known as the Sons of Thunder. Now, Yeshua called them that for a specific

00:16reason, probably because they were hotheads. This is before the Holy Spirit actually got

00:22into them. They were called out and they were called the Sons of Thunder. Now, you can read

00:27that in Mark chapter 3, 17, about the calling and Yeshua selected them. And I just want to

00:37read a couple of verses about them, guys. And I'll start out with Luke 9, 51 to 56.

00:51And it came to pass when the time was come that he should be received up, that he stood

00:58steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem and sent messengers before his face. And they

01:06went and entered into the village of the Samaritans to make ready for him. And they did not receive

01:15him because his face was, was as though he would go to Jerusalem. So the Samaritans didn't really

01:22want him to go to Jerusalem. So they was trying to block him from that. So they blocked him from

01:28that. So they, um, I think they wanted him just to stay there because they were mesmerized by him,

01:35you know, the Samaritan woman. And, um, but they, they didn't like, you know, they had a thing about

01:41worshiping in Jerusalem. They just, they didn't like that. So, uh, they didn't want him to go.

01:51And when his disciples, James and John saw this, they said, master, well, that, that we command fire

01:58to come down from the heaven and consume them as even as Elijah did, which Elijah did that in first

02:05Kings chapter 18, when he's facing the prophets of Baal, when the fire come down from heaven to consume

02:10the sacrifice, but he turned and rebuked them and said, you know, not what manner of spirit you are

02:18of for the son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another,

02:26they went to another village, you know, Yeshua's, you know, accepted their decision and he just,

02:32you know, did a detour, went to another, went to another, uh, village through there to go to Jerusalem.

02:37Um, now, you know, they're, you know, them two weren't the only headstrong, headstrong,

02:45headstrong people, you know, in the family. Apparently their mother, mother was a little

02:51headstrong too, you know, and she, you know, they were mama's, mama's boys, I guess. And mommy loved

02:56them and wanted to see the, you know, to see the best of them. So if you turn to Matthew, uh,

03:02Matthew chapter 20, verse 20, I'll read this to you.

03:07Then came to him, the mother of Zebedee's children, John and James with, with their sons,

03:13worshiping him and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said unto her, what will thou?

03:20She said unto him, grant that these mighty sons may set the one on the right hand and the other on the

03:28left in thy kingdom. But Yeshua answered and said, you know, not what you ask. Are you able to drink

03:37of the cup that I shall drink of and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say

03:45unto him, we are able. And he said unto them, you shall drink indeed as my cup and be baptized

03:52with the baptism that I am baptized with, but to sit on the right hand and the left hand is not mine

03:59to give, but it shall be given unto them for whom is prepared of my father. And when the, and when the

04:08tanner heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. Yeah, they were a little

04:13jealous of the brethren. It's like, yeah, you're betraying us, man. You've thrown us to the curb

04:17there. But she, but Yeshua called them unto him and said, you know, that the princes of the Gentiles

04:24exercise dominion over them and that they are great exercise authority upon them.

04:32But it should not, but it should not be so among you, but whosoever will be great among you, let,

04:38let him be your minister. And whoever will, whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant.

04:47Even as the son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life a ransom

04:55for many. Well, all really, but, um, yeah. So the mother wanted to petition, try to, you know,

05:03throw the other disciples under the bus and say, Hey, these are my boys. It's special. And we put

05:08them under your right hand, left, left hand side of you in the kingdom, you know, and Yeshua's a,

05:13it's not my, it's not my call, you know, it's the father. But, uh, you know, John and James,

05:19you know, and Peter, you know, they were like the, the three, three apostles that were really close to

05:25Yeshua, you know, like a transfiguration. And, um, I think he just wanted, Yeshua wanted to keep

05:31them, them three close because he had a special purpose for him. Not just, I mean, not taken away

05:37from the other disciples, uh, apostles, of course, but he just, those three, they selected those three

05:42for special instructions and everything like that. But yeah, that was, uh, Yeshua, Yeshua, you know,

05:50named them the sons of thunder. And it's probably because, you know, they had a, you know, maybe a

05:57zealot attitude. I don't know. I don't think they went around killing people like the zealots with the

06:01daggers and the knives and whatever, but, you know, they were just honest fishermen, but I think they

06:06just two headstrong people, you know, and, and, uh, determined they wanted to get, get ahead,

06:14get ahead of everybody else and have, you know, be in higher favor with Yeshua and Yahweh.

06:21And, uh, but anyways, you know, that's just not the attitude. And that's what he said,

06:27you know, talk to him about, that's not the spirit, you know, and it should be just about love and

06:33love, kindness, forgiveness, you know, and things like that, consideration, compassion.

06:39And, uh, see, you've got to remember that they're, you know, the apostles are in training,

06:43you know, they, they might've known Torah, Torah and, you know, laws they were instructed in,

06:49but, you know, when Yeshua come, he was a revolutionary and he wanted to not, not,

06:56he wanted not just a letter of the law. He wanted to live in the spirit of the law too.

07:00The law is love, of course. And that's what it is. You know, they had to learn a lot of lessons,

07:06you know, and, and, uh, it come in handy when they, they were baptized by fire and, you know,

07:12the day of Pentecost and that knowledge really started coming into them and they became great

07:18and did many great, wonderful things, miraculous things. But, you know, they were still the sons

07:24of thunder and, you know, especially when they said, you know, shall we bring down fire like

07:28Elijah did? That just tells you right there that they, they knew scripture. And back then the

07:33scripture was the old Testament. So they knew scripture. There's no doubt about that. Some

07:38people say that disciples are just, you know, simpletons, hillbilly simpletons, you know,

07:43fishermen and didn't really know nothing. No, they, they went to, they went to synagogues. It's

07:48obvious they went synagogues on the Sabbath and, and, uh, and, uh, when it came to the, the Holy

07:55Feast, you know, they, they observed them too. It's clear in there. They just, they went with Yeshua

08:00and, you know, observed the feast days and Sabbaths. And they learned a great deal from them. What,

08:05what it should, what, what you should do and what you shouldn't do. And that came in handy

08:11because later on, they'd be teachers, ministers, preachers and whatever. And John was the last,

08:17last prophet and he last apostle slash prophet. And he, you know, he died an old man. He wasn't

08:24martyred. He was the only one that wasn't martyred. But anyways, I just wanted to bring up the sons of

08:29thunder because, you know, they were a powerful instrument and Yeshua's and Yahweh's plan plan for

08:37mankind. And, um, they should, you know, if you, you know, please study, study up on the sons of

08:43thunder, you know, just read up on them and, uh, you know, just pray, pray for wisdom, understanding

08:50forgiveness, you know, of course, forgiveness, praise Yahweh, keep praising them like,

08:55like crazy, you know, you never get tired of that. I promise you. But yeah, with that,
