Judge John Lopez bangs the gavel on whether the Chiefs are cooked
Transcript
00:00The Kansas City Chiefs, they're done, and that is the extent of this case.
00:06No qualifiers, no what about the futures, although that's going to come into the discussion, I'm sure.
00:13Figge, are the Kansas City Chiefs done?
00:17I know you said no qualifiers.
00:19No, you can do it in your argument.
00:22Okay, yeah, so Your Honor, I'm going to say they are not done as the Chiefs.
00:27Now, this year they probably are done, but I don't think that's the end of a dynasty, Your Honor.
00:33I think, like I said, this year they probably might not make the playoffs.
00:39If they do, they probably won't be a huge factor.
00:42But we got to remember, we said this about the Patriots over the years.
00:46Hell, we said some people said it in the city when it comes to the Astros over the years.
00:51But I think the difference between those two teams is Patrick Mahomes is 30 years old.
00:58He's still a great quarterback, and yes, they probably need to read to a lot of players on that squad.
01:04And I think the Chiefs took advantage of Patrick Mahomes, how great he is, because they got to the Super Bowl last year,
01:12and they pretty much got a similar roster.
01:15So if they don't make it this year, I think next year they're probably going to read to this squad and try to get back there.
01:23I don't think they're going to blow up the whole team.
01:27I don't think Patrick Mahomes is falling off.
01:29He's not 40-something years old where they probably need to start looking at the future.
01:33I think this year was just a bad year for them, an unlucky year.
01:39So I think next year, if they go into the season or into the offseason, getting the right type of players,
01:45some good playmakers, maybe moving on from certain other players and improving in other positions,
01:52I think they are not done when it comes to being the Chiefs.
01:55Some strong arguments there, Reggie, but I'm sure you're going to have some strong counterarguments.
01:58I appreciate that, Your Honor.
02:00I think that you can talk about the idea of them just going and retooling, getting more talent.
02:06We've talked about that for a while.
02:07That's what Xavier Worthy is supposed to represent.
02:09He's not really been as good as the thought was that he would be.
02:13Rashi Rice shows a little bit of promise, but he hasn't been that otherworldly level.
02:17And especially when we talk about, well, first and foremost, let's just start with Patrick Mahomes is very clear.
02:22He's not surrounded the talent that he once was.
02:24And I guess one thing that you typically would do is say, well, he's that level of quarterback where he needs to raise it.
02:29I think that you're seeing the difficulty with putting that amount of pressure on a singular player continually.
02:35Travis Kelsey was 1 of 5 in this game, and this kind of reflects a demise that we've seen coming a little bit over the last couple of years.
02:43That's a particular relationship that he's had, that Patrick Mahomes has had,
02:46when he's been able to make it work with the likes of the Marquez Valdez scantlings and all, you know,
02:51the earlier iterations of Smith-Schuster or whatever.
02:54It's like, well, at least he has that one thing.
02:56That thing isn't there.
02:57The running back situation is problematic.
02:59The offensive line is problematic.
03:01And the thing that I think always gets lost when we talk about the Chiefs and their particular, you know,
03:06dynasty or error or whatever you want to call it, the defense has mattered a great deal.
03:10The defense is also waning.
03:12You could talk about the advanced analytics of this where we've been looking at it this year and going,
03:17well, they look about the same team as they were last year.
03:19They're just not as lucky.
03:20Yeah, that's kind of the point.
03:22Last year they were very lucky, right?
03:23A sustained success for seven, eight years in the league isn't typical.
03:28It's incredibly atypical.
03:29It's one of the reasons why we celebrate it.
03:31And even in the last few years of this, you're looking at it and you're going, damn, they got really lucky to get here.
03:36I think that it's all of those things.
03:37If you take them into the idea of Brett Veach just going and adding more talent, that's easier said than done in this league.
03:43We see it all the damn time in many different places.
03:45I think it's more likely that they're done than they're not.
03:47Also, and this is the crazy part, right, because these are the things that you can have for a long time.
03:52It might be fair to ask if Andy Reid's game plan is getting stale.
03:57He's not a spring chicken anymore.
03:59So I do wonder if they would need to try and bring in some new blood.
04:03And bringing in new blood doesn't inherently always work.
04:05I think that there's a lot of things working against them to where we might be, in fact, be seeing the door close.
04:11And I'd be willing to make the gamble right here on your court that it is.
04:14Dang, this is a hard one.
04:16Y'all should have both been on debate team in high school.
04:19What, so we could get bullied?
04:23Those were really strong arguments on both sides.
04:27Figgy talking about Tom Brady and the Astros, you know, points.
04:31You talking about Andy Reid at the very end there and also, you know, just the difficulty of just trying to win in the NFL consistently at that level.
04:40Points.
04:41I just, I guess I got to make a decision.
04:44Listen, we can't have a hung jury here because those are both really strong arguments.
04:48I think ultimately I'm going to side with Figgy on this because as much as the coach is going to matter, as much as it's so difficult, as much as everything.
05:01You stated a real strong argument there, Reggie.
05:03It does come back to they do have the guy, you know, and he's 30.
05:07You know, he's 30 years old.
05:09It feels like he's been here forever.
05:10He does.
05:11He's 30 years old.
05:13And I never really fall into line with, well, he can play until he's 40 because those are the outliers.
05:17It's very rare to find a quarterback that plays until his 40s.
05:20That's not a backup or Tom Brady, you know, or Phillip Rivers, which we're going to get to here in a minute.
05:25So I think by the narrowest of margins, I'm going to give Figgy this.
