The 'Fun Fit' class at Slim Fit Life Gym in Horsforth has helped 'Grannies with Guns' develop muscles, their fitness levels and their social circle!

00:00I'm Trisha Jeffcott, I'm the owner of Slim Fit Life and Horsford Fitness Classes on Horsford
00:05Town Street and we've been here about 12 years so yeah we're just providing a service to
00:10keep all our ladies fit and healthy.
00:12Unfit is a little play on words, it actually is just short for functional fitness and one
00:17of the key things we need to be aware of is as we get older, keeping our mobility, keeping
00:22our fitness levels up, keeping our strength is so important you know, we might just suddenly
00:27bend down to get something out of a cupboard and we realise that our knees are not working
00:31as effectively as what they thought we were expecting them to.
00:34So yeah being able to do your squats, being able to get up and down, if we do those on
00:37a regular basis when we need to do it by you know reaching up into a cupboard to get something
00:42out or tying something behind our back, anything like that is all about mobility and strength.
00:47So functional fitness, everything we do is designed to keep those joints flexible and
00:51our muscles strong.
00:52We don't do the same exercises every single time you come, I try to sort of jazz it up
00:56a little bit for them.
00:57But an example would be holding a weight out in front of you and rotating it because that
01:01helps to maintain wrist strength which we need to be able to open jars.
01:05Doing the step ups up and down on the step and doing it carrying some weights because
01:08when we're carrying our bags up and down in and out of shops, being able to carry weights
01:12in our bags, another way of exercising and keeping those leg muscles strong.
01:17The fitness level for us all has improved drastically.
01:24You know I do Pilates here as well.
01:27People walk past and I always say why don't you come in?
01:31It doesn't matter what you look like or how old you are.
01:35So I do do Friday Zumba every week but one week it was cancelled and fun fit slotted in which
01:41is what we've just done now and it's absolutely brilliant.
01:45I had a desk job and I worked long hours so very sedentary role really and I had a lot of
01:53back issues so this has really been fantastic because I feel that I'm much more flexible
01:58than I ever, well since my twenties, touching my toes, all that kind of thing.
02:04I had cancer and I kept coming here through the treatment and Trish really got me through
02:10it with the exercise.
02:12I mean now they're saying that exercise is good when you're going through chemo and it
02:16really helped for me.
02:18I mean it's not just the exercise which gives you a lift as well for your body, it's a social
02:24side.
02:25We've made lots and lots of friends here.
02:28When some of the ladies came into one of the class and they were laughing because the grandchildren
02:32had been teasing them over the weekend and they'd been out with their arms out quite proud
02:37that they had nice toned arms and some of them have been making reference saying oh look
02:41granny look at those guns and they're really proud and so they should because they do work
02:45incredibly hard when they come to the gym and one of the biggest things that I really
02:49love about it is at the end of the class all my ladies are saying oh we're going across
02:52the road for a coffee and so they're getting out the house, they're socialising and it's
02:56all part of that whole community spirit which is amazing.

03:11I'm all of a grateful for your kids all this time.
