00:00Jeremy Swayman and Cambridge Mobile Telematics have launched a safe driving campaign for the holidays.
00:08And their Cambridge CMT's CEO, Bill Powers, is here.
00:13Bill, good morning.
00:14Good morning.
00:14Thank you for being on the show.
00:16And you brought Jeremy Swayman with you from the Great White North on the telephone bright and early this morning.
00:22Hello, Jeremy.
00:23Good morning, guys.
00:24How you doing?
00:26Good. Can you hear me? Am I pinging? Am I getting to you?
00:29Yeah, we got you.
00:31Are you on? No offense to Canada.
00:33Are you on the rotary dial up there or the cell phone working?
00:38I'm on the cell phone here, yeah.
00:40We landed late last night, but we're looking forward to this call and getting on with you guys.
00:44Well, we're glad to have you on.
00:46First time ever on the show.
00:48And that's three in a row for this team.
00:53Yeah, it's been fun.
00:55Obviously, getting the first win for the road trip is important.
00:57But playing at home has been a blast this year.
01:00It is every year, of course.
01:02And really liking this group, especially getting some guys back in the lineup that were injured.
01:06It's going to be a pretty fun second half here.
01:10Certainly nice to have David Posternach back last night.
01:14Yeah, we missed our guy.
01:17He looked great.
01:18And he doesn't really miss a beat.
01:20So it was nice to have him back in the lineup.
01:23How long would you guess he's okay on that third line?
01:26Or do you think it doesn't matter?
01:30What's that?
01:31I said, is he going to be okay on that third line for a while?
01:34Or is he going to want to be back up top sooner than later?
01:38Yeah, I think any line he's on, he's going to be doing pretty damn good.
01:43So we're just happy to have him back on the ice.
01:46And then, again, just a seamless transition.
01:49It just goes to show what kind of player he is.
01:51And the guys that stepped up with his absence, it's a fun locker room to be a part of right now.
01:57Jeremy, you guys have been playing good here of late.
02:00What's been the difference, you know, here in recent games for this good play for you as a team?
02:09I think just the next man up mentality has been a big piece.
02:12And, you know, no matter who's on the ice for us, we know that they're going to get the job done,
02:17play their role the right way, and do it with maximum effort.
02:21That's all we ask from each other.
02:22And that's what I'm saying.
02:24It's a good feeling being in this locker room, looking to the left and right of you,
02:27knowing that every guy is going to get their all, game in and game out.
02:31So that's a contagious feeling.
02:33And, again, the locker room's in a good spot right now,
02:36and we just want to keep growing that momentum.
02:39Some on this show maybe were a little critical of your start this season,
02:44but since November, you've absolutely dialed it in.
02:49What, if anything, is the difference there, Jeremy?
02:53I think just consistency, belief in our system.
02:57And, you know, knowing that it was going to be a transition,
03:01a new system was put in place for us, and us just trusting the process,
03:06we know our coaching staff is going to put us in a good position to win games.
03:09And that's something that, you know, we had to come together with,
03:13and we put the time in.
03:14It's been an interesting year.
03:15We don't get a lot of practices.
03:17You know, we're so condensed with games,
03:18and that's been a big challenge for a lot of teams.
03:22But at the same time, it's pretty fun.
03:24You know, every other day, it seems like we're playing games,
03:28and that's where you really get, you know, your repetition
03:31and trying to learn new systems.
03:33So it took us, again, a couple games,
03:35and it's something that we're going to continue to work on all season long.
03:39But I think that transition in November, getting some games under our belt,
03:45getting some chemistry with each other, really helped us a lot
03:48and put us in a good position, you know, around this holiday season.
03:52Jeremy, you've dealt with a lot of change with your time in Boston,
03:55whether it's new head coaches or, you know, losing Linus.
03:58You and Linus were very, very close in his time playing here.
04:02Negotiations going into last season.
04:03And what's been the hardest thing that you've had to deal with in Boston,
04:07and what has kind of evened out the most this season?
04:11Yeah, man, it's all washed away when you get on that ice for the black and gold.
04:17I tell you what, it's an experience every year.
04:20You want to gain experience and just grow your game as an individual,
04:24and ups and downs are a part of it.
04:25And that was something for me personally that I've gotten to accumulate over the years.
04:30And I think this year it's really put me in a good position to, you know,
04:34expect the unexpected and understand that getting your mind right, you know,
04:39off the ice is going to put you yourself in a good position to perform on the ice.
04:43And obviously being on the ice, you want to be in that happy-go-lucky state.
04:47I'm the happiest guy on the rink every time I touch the ice
04:51because I'm so grateful for the position I'm in, the guys I get to play with,
04:54and, of course, the city I get to play with, or play for.
04:57So the gratitude is just overwhelming at times,
05:00and I'm just so grateful to be a part of this journey.
05:03Jeremy, how odd has it been to be goaltender for a team that's captain-less?
05:09It doesn't feel like we are.
05:11It's really special, actually, you know, to have guys that have stepped up,
05:16you know, even without letters.
05:18And that's something, again, that I really haven't paid attention to
05:22because I feel like we have so many leaders in that room
05:24that are so capable.
05:26And it's allowed voices to be heard that necessarily wouldn't be heard.
05:30And our culture has really stepped up in that aspect of anyone
05:34that's wearing a jersey has a say.
05:37And that's something that, you know, we take really seriously
05:40and it's really ringing true this year.
05:42Got to see on Behind the Bee, we got to see Bill Burr do the starting lineups
05:46the other night, gave you a strong bulldog.
05:49Nesson has taken to referring to Morgan Geeky as Morgan Drake May Geeky.
05:58Please tell me that's not something you guys are doing.
06:02That's just a Nesson line.
06:05You know, Nesson is one of the best in the business,
06:09so whatever they do, I support.
06:10But I haven't heard that personally, so I guess we got to keep that rolling for him.
06:16Yeah, and you're not calling him Morgan Geeky Geeky or none of –
06:20do you even get – do you get the Drake – we have an argument here,
06:24it's probably a generational thing.
06:25Do you get the Drake May May thing or no?
06:29No, I'm sorry.
06:30You got to fill me in on that one.
06:32Okay, all right.
06:32So you don't understand that nickname either.
06:34Yeah.
06:35Nobody understands.
06:35Okay, cool.
06:37I'm told by Shyam that all the kids get it.
06:41It's on TikTok, Greg.
06:42Everybody talks about it.
06:44All the kids are doing it?
06:45Yeah, all the kids are doing it.
06:46That means he's like the best because his name is in the middle of which
06:50is supposed to be his middle name.
06:51He's him.
06:51I don't know.
06:52But, Jeremy, you know, last night you had some great saves,
06:56and goalies are different.
06:57Every time I talk to people who are around hockey,
06:59they say goalies are different.
07:01They just think differently.
07:02What's the one thing as a goaltender, like,
07:04give us a little window in that the most important thing you tell
07:07to your defensemen, I know you probably tell them a lot of things,
07:10but one thing that, you know, they need to do for you out there
07:13for you to have the best game that you can possibly play night in
07:18and night out?
07:20That's a great question.
07:21Well, I think that that transition, you know,
07:25that transitions me right into the aspect that hockey is a team game.
07:28I can't do my job without having the guys in front of me doing their job
07:32to a tee, so a ton of credit goes to my D-men and my forwards even.
07:36And I think the other day we were having a meeting,
07:39and we were just having a 30-game recap meeting.
07:41We went over our strengths and weaknesses as a team,
07:44and one of our strengths is blocking shots.
07:47I think we blocked the most shots in the league.
07:49And that was a huge telltale for me, at least personally,
07:52knowing that we got guys that are committed to defense,
07:55and that's why we're getting really good results in our penalty kill.
07:59Obviously, just our defensive zone breakouts
08:01and then transition into offense.
08:03So the communication is huge for me and my D-men,
08:07and obviously the forwards doing their job.
08:09But, you know, if I get big zaddy in front of me,
08:12I got to tell them to get out of the way,
08:14and we have some good laughs because they can't see around that guy.
08:16So I just got to make sure I'm communicating with them.
08:18And, you know, if I see that first shot,
08:21I'm confident that they're going to be able to clear out the rebounds
08:23and I'll stop that first shot.
08:25So I think it's just a communication thing on the ice,
08:29and plays happen fast.
08:31You talk about how fun of a locker room this is to be a part of right now.
08:34Obviously, great to get pasta back on the ice,
08:36but having McAvoy back on the road with you guys,
08:38how big of a plus is that for you?
08:41It's everything.
08:43I mean, he battles so hard.
08:44He's such a leader in our room,
08:46and obviously the dominant force on the ice.
08:48And, you know, for him to go through a pretty traumatic experience there,
08:53I saw it first.
08:54I hadn't best seen the house for it, unfortunately,
08:56and knew kind of right away with that sound.
08:59But, you know, it just goes to show he's not going to give up.
09:03And, you know, we're so excited to have him back.
09:06And we know that he's going to be an immediate impact when he does get back.
09:10But just like you said, the morale that he brings, the positivity,
09:13I've never seen that guy smirk around.
09:15And that's important, you know,
09:17because he wants to be on the ice just as bad as anyone else.
09:21And he cares so much.
09:23And for him to be on this trip and hopefully get in the game here
09:26is going to be a really big momentum swing for us.
09:30How does that go?
09:31I mean, absolute warrior that he's back and going to be back this soon.
09:34But how does that go?
09:35When you're there, are you like, are you watching?
09:38You're like, wait a second,
09:39I think that was a tooth that I just saw come out.
09:42Oh, man.
09:43But, yeah, it was pretty traumatizing, to be honest.
09:47You never want to see your guys go down.
09:50And the way it happened, it was just an impossible play to really miss.
09:56That puck, a couple of pucks come at 195 miles an hour.
10:00So, yeah, it was tough to see.
10:02Now he's a true hockey player, because don't they get their teeth missing?
10:06That's like when you made it.
10:08That is true.
10:10Not so much with football.
10:11Oh, yeah.
10:11Not so much with football.
10:12Big time.
10:13No, no, no.
10:13We wear the mask.
10:14We have that mask.
10:15Yes, Wiggy.
10:16Yeah.
10:16And I don't want nothing to do with that.
10:18I play hockey and I wear a full cage.
10:21And I don't know if the pucks don't come.
10:22You and me each.
10:23You and me both.
10:24Yeah.
10:24So, Wiggy played for the Patriots for a long time.
10:28Do you think you could score on Jeremy?
10:30I'm a pretty good.
10:31I am a pretty good, barely.
10:33Still plays a lot of men's over 40 when he gets the opportunity.
10:37Yeah.
10:37I'm playing Friday in a Matt Light's event.
10:39Oh, you are?
10:40I'm pretty good as an offensive.
10:42I don't play no defense.
10:43Okay.
10:44I only play one end of the ice.
10:45I don't back check.
10:46I like the float.
10:48Yeah.
10:48We go penalty shot.
10:49Penalty shot style.
10:51I don't think so.
10:52Ten of them.
10:52Oh, ten of them?
10:53Ten of them.
10:53Oh, maybe I could slip one past the goalie.
10:55Oh, what do you think?
10:56There you go.
10:57That's what I wanted to hear.
10:58Maybe.
10:58We'll make it happen.
10:59Yeah.
10:59Maybe.
11:00That would be fun, though.
11:01We'll make it happen.
11:01I don't know.
11:02I might throw a red challenge for you.
11:03Really?
11:04I don't want that.
11:05Okay.
11:05I'm going to go Dean Youngblood.
11:07I'm going to circle the center ice and that nice little kick before I come here.
11:10Jeremy, I get every piece of money I have in my pocket on you on this one.
11:14Yeah.
11:15I would say that's true.
11:16Well, you got Bill is here, and you teamed up with CMT and their Road Club app.
11:21And the message is about staying safe on the roads this holiday season.
11:27Jeremy.
11:29I was really excited for that.
11:30Bill and I got to meet organically over the years.
11:34And when he presented me with this opportunity, I couldn't have thought of a better company
11:40to partner with that really is something I'm very passionate about and that represents
11:45the right way to live every day.
11:49And when we started talking, I mentioned my dad was a huge advocate for me.
11:55When I started driving a motor vehicle, it was scary, the way that he presented it to
12:03me.
12:03He's a Brooklyn, New Yorker, 6'6".
12:06And let's just say, like, when I was first driving in the parking lot of my elementary
12:10school learning at 14 years old, there were tears coming down my eyes because I was so nervous.
12:16And, you know, if you're making a wrong turn, wrong, anything wrong in his eyes, he would
12:21let you hear it.
12:23And the biggest thing that he would preach to me exactly was, you will not go on your
12:27phone.
12:27We're not going to have distracted driving and don't even get me started on impaired driving.
12:31So that was a staple in our family growing up.
12:35And again, when Bill presented it to me, I couldn't have thought of a better opportunity
12:41to be a part of such a special company and obviously a movement.
12:45It's really cool.
12:46You earn rewards when you stay focused, improve your driving, not only you, but obviously for
12:52your kids who are driving.
12:53And so you should download the CMT Road Club app.
12:57And it's really cool that you're doing that.
13:01And Bill, I know you may want to add something to the mix here this morning.
13:05Is that correct when it comes to what we're doing together?
13:09Yeah, so a couple of things.
13:11First of all, Jeremy's just a great guy, a great kid.
13:15Dad's a great guy.
13:16We really get to know each other.
13:17I don't think we've ever talked about hockey, which is just awesome.
13:20So we'll be doing a lot together, but we were talking about this for the holidays and
13:24we're thinking, you know, what's a great way to make a difference?
13:28So I started talking to Greg and we came up with an idea to do this.
13:33Jeremy was kind enough to get involved.
13:35And then we are going to be donating $10,000 to the Greg Hill Foundation to help people
13:41through the holidays.
13:42Hopefully it goes to kids or whatever they need, but that's the plan today.
13:45So thank you for all you're doing.
13:46Good job.
13:47The only restriction on it is that you said Jeremy must win every game that he starts
13:53in going forward, correct?
13:55As long as Jeremy doesn't let Wiggy score, we're going to be good.
13:58That's the 10-grade.
13:59That's the 10-grade.
14:00Have you got that locked down?
14:03Locked down, yeah.
14:05All right.
14:06Well, wait, what do you drive?
14:07What do you currently, we like to ask this question, what are you driving these days?
14:10Wiggy loves cars.
14:12All right.
14:14I'm driving a Maserati right now and we just got a Range Rover as well for my beautiful,
14:21wonderful fiance.
14:23Range Rover Sport?
14:24No, I see.
14:27I don't know cars as well as you.
14:29It's all sports.
14:30We don't need to go fast.
14:31We go A to B.
14:32I was going to say congratulations on the engagement.
14:35Oh, yeah.
14:35Congratulations on that.
14:39Who's got the best car on the team?
14:42Man, we got some good cars.
14:44That's the funniest thing is coming to the locker room, but guys chirping cars.
14:48But, I mean, Zdorov's got that Bentley, so he's got something nice.
14:56He doesn't really miss.
14:57You know, he likes to show up with a bang.
15:00Yeah, we got some nice cars.
15:01We're very, very fortunate, yeah.
15:04The Bentley SUV?
15:05The Bentley, the Benyatta, I think it's called or something like that.
15:10But if it's the Ford Off-Lying Spur, he's winning.
15:12You don't miss.
15:13Jeremy, Greg has the only domestic car in the seaport, so.
15:16I love it.
15:19I used to see Jeremy in the garage at the Echelon, and I would go in the other direction,
15:24because I just didn't, I never know what people hear when they're listening to the radio, but I.
15:29I mean, we talk good about him, so.
15:30Yeah, we do.
15:31Yeah, we definitely.
15:32Well, you better keep that up now for me, because, you know, we're trying to keep it going.
15:36Great, yeah.
15:36We big him up.
15:38We're keeping it up.
15:39All right, Jeremy, listen, I appreciate, I know it was a late night for you,
15:43and we appreciate you getting up this morning and doing the show,
15:46and we would love to have you on anytime, anytime.
15:49You're welcome here, always.
15:51Likewise.
15:52Thank you so much.
15:53Hey, Jeremy, thanks, brother.
15:54Say hi to Ken.
15:56All right, happy holidays, Bill.
15:58Thank you, guys.
15:59All right, Merry Christmas.
16:00Happy holidays, Jeremy Swayman.
16:02Download the CMT Road Club app.
16:05Thanks to you guys for the support of the foundation.
16:07Awesome, happy to do it.
16:08And for doing this, and Merry Christmas.
16:09Happy holidays.
16:10Keep everybody safe on the roads.
16:12Very cool.
16:12Very cool.
