00:00Preventing atrocities and remembering the lives lost.
00:05This is one of the goals of the International Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the
00:09Crime of Genocide and of its prevention on 9th December.
00:13The United Nations mark this occasion with a high-level meeting.
00:17We must critically ask ourselves whether everything is being done to prevent the commission of
00:22the gravest of crimes.
00:25The answer seems to be sufficiently obvious – more needs to be done.
00:31More efforts are necessary when serious allegations of the commission of the crime of genocide are
00:36reaching us in this General Assembly Hall, when risk factors and indicators of this crime
00:42point to the foreseeability of the likelihood of genocide.
00:48This year marks the 10th anniversary of the International Day to commemorate and prevent
00:53genocides.
00:55The occasion allowed for a look back on progress made, but numerous wars are still ongoing
00:59around the world, leading to atrocities against civilians in many cases.
01:04And in September, the world's leading association of genocide scholars declared that Israel was
01:10committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
