UN declares transatlantic slave trade a crime against humanity, demands reparations

The landmark resolution was an historic victory for Ghana which tabled the motion earlier this month.

00:00The United Nations General Assemblies voted to recognize the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity.
00:07Tabled by Ghana, it also calls for reparations.
00:11This resolution sends a very clear message that the international community would no longer tolerate impunity.
00:20That the international community stands for justice.
00:24That the international community and our multilateral system we have erected.
00:29No matter how long it takes, the day of reckoning will come.
00:33And so all of us as leaders should be mindful of our actions and our policies.
00:40That once we violate the rights of others, once we engage in impunity, in acts of injustice, the day of
00:48reckoning will come.
00:49To me, that is a very, very profound message that the UN is sending to the world today.
00:57123 nations voted in favor of the resolution.
01:0052 abstained, including Britain and the EU, while the US, Israel and Argentina voted against it.
