December 9, 2025 – U.S. manufacturer Electra has announced the creation of Electra Defense, a new division dedicated to developing hybrid-electric aircraft with ultra-short takeoff and landing (ultra-STOL) capability, designed for military logistics missions in remote or unstable environments.

According to the company, the goal is to provide armed forces with a platform capable of executing the final phase of the logistics chain – transporting personnel, equipment, supplies and even energy to hard-to-reach locations where trucks and traditional helicopters face operational limitations or high costs.

The division’s flagship project is the EL9, an aircraft engineered to operate in extremely confined spaces, such as landing pads the size of a heliport. Electra states that the EL9 can carry up to 450 kg of payload over distances of up to 1,852 km, while also delivering up to 600 kilowatts of transportable power.

This capability enables the aircraft to function as a mobile power source, supporting systems, machinery and field equipment – a valuable asset for military operations that require fast, modular and adaptable energy solutions.

Electra notes that the EL9 may complement or, in certain missions, replace ground vehicles and helicopters in forward logistics roles, increasing operational flexibility in modern military theatres.
