00:30Hello, everybody. It is Tuesday afternoon as we all grapple with a deep, dark November, but guaranteed a little bit of warmth just after two o'clock Monday to Friday with Countdown. How are you doing, Rachel?
00:43Very well. I'm bringing the colour, clearly.
00:45Yes, a nice jumper. Excellent. On this day in 1975, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was released, a movie based on the novel. What's your take on that movie?
00:56I haven't seen it. This is something else I need to see. It's one of those classics that everybody knows about, but I haven't seen.
01:03An absolutely sensational movie. And of course, it's all about Jack Nicholson, and he's known for getting into his roles, whether it was in The Shining, whether it was in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
01:14This is really interesting. The key cast, of course, it was set in a psychiatric hospital, actually lived in Oregon State Hospital and stayed overnight to see what it would feel like to not be able to get out, to feel like what it's like to be in a hospital day in, day out.
01:32Imagine that. Wow. And then going and filming properly in that state of mind. 49 years old, as we speak today, so it does get on the classic list.
01:42Yep. Well, let's head over to Dictionary Corner. The always level-headed and calm, Susie Dent is there with her dictionary.
01:49And alongside her all this week, it's Levi Root.
01:54Looking fantastic, as always. Thank you, Carl.
01:57As always. You don't find many doctors look that good, let me tell you.
02:01Right, our champion is Helen McGivern, 33 years old, living in Wigan. How are you today?
02:07I'm very well, thank you.
02:08You're up against Keith Sanders, who immediately, we hope, beats you because he brought us a present.
02:14And you haven't brought us anything yet. Shameful.
02:17Keith, you're from Kendall.
02:19Yep.
02:19That's a clue. Come on, hand it over. I love it. You brought us some Kendall mint cake.
02:23There you go. Lovely. Do you like this, Rach?
02:26I was going to say neutral.
02:28Susie, Kendall mint cake.
02:29I love Kendall mint cake. It keeps you going on a long walk.
02:32What about you, Levi?
02:33I love Kendall mint cake.
02:34You love it.
02:35It's a shame.
02:36Nice cuppa.
02:37You just brought enough for me.
02:38But, you know, I'll see if I can spare you a little square later.
02:41Well, listen, we are easily bribed. Thank you very much for the Kendall mint cake.
02:45During the second commercial break, I'll slip you the answer to the conundrum.
02:48Brilliant stuff.
02:49Keith and Helen, best of luck.
02:52If you win today, the pressure's on tomorrow, Helen, for a present, I think.
02:56Off you go.
02:57Hi, Rachel.

05:56Yes.
05:57Nice and straightforward, but after a maximum,
05:59I've got high hopes, Levi.
06:01Not quite a maximum, Colin, but an eight,
06:04I think, will rocket us towards launched.
06:08Launched.
06:09There you go.
06:09Permission to launch.
06:11Right.

06:18Thank you, Helen.
06:18One from the top and five not.

07:32And multiply by 25.
07:34Same result.
07:35So 798, which is a multiple of 7!
07:39Did you get it?
07:40No!
07:42You've done the hard work, Colin.
07:44You're looking for 7 times 114.
07:47So you can say 25 times 5 is 125.
07:528 plus 3 is 11.
07:54Take that away for the magic number.
07:56And times it by 7, 798.
07:57Yeah, well done.
07:58By the time I worked out what it's a multiple of, there's only two seconds left.
08:04That's the problem.

11:56particular food.
11:57Well, it's a feast of nines here.
11:59Well done.

13:25Well done. And just how close to that was to the best you can do?
13:29I don't know. Possible?
13:30Possible. Leave it with me.
13:32OK, yeah. Really, really difficult, Keith.
13:34Well done. Seven points back after Helen's maximum
13:37as we break bread yet again with Levi Roots.
13:40You know, you're on Dictionary Corner quite a lot
13:42and you sometimes think, well,
13:44when is somebody going to run out of stories?
13:46But Levi has the greatest life, right?
13:47So since last time, two doctorates.
13:49We talked about that yesterday.
13:51And just for a bit of good measure,
13:52you're learning to fly.
13:54I am learning to fly.
13:55And it was absolutely fantastic.
13:58And again, it's something that perhaps...
14:00Because if you remember, I've talked to you about skydiving.
14:02I did that to conquer my fears in Dubai some years ago.
14:06But I really wanted to challenge myself again to see this time
14:10whether or not I could actually fly a plane.
14:13It's like...
14:14It's another bucket list type of thing that, you know,
14:16you just don't want to do.
14:18And this week, I had the opportunity to do that.
14:22And it was a fantastic, brilliant pilot
14:25that was going to give me my first lesson.
14:28And we got in the plane and he taxied down the runway
14:31and I still felt like telling him to stop and let me out.
14:35Hitchhike back.
14:36Hitchhike back.
14:37Especially when we took off
14:38and that feeling in the stomach started.
14:41I thought that maybe I shouldn't have had that lovely breakfast
14:43that I did this morning.
14:46And we got up there and it was amazing.
14:48It was absolutely...
14:49Once you get up and you sort of get beyond the thermals
14:53and you're in a nice trajectory,
14:56it's a lovely feeling.
14:59But the thing is that don't look down
15:01if you're not used to it up there.
15:03And I was looking down, unfortunately.
15:05So it wasn't...
15:06The first 10 minutes wasn't a nice one
15:08until I actually got used to it
15:11and I'm in the plane and I'm thinking that this is fine.
15:14You know, I say to everybody,
15:15try something daring
15:17because you might be surprised
15:18and see how you're actually taking to it, you know.
15:21I took to it and now I want to get my flying badge
15:24by actually going back and taking more lessons.
15:27But it was amazing to actually get up there
15:29and actually look up.
15:30We went to...
15:32Is it near Milton Keynes?
15:33We actually did our flying.
15:35And it was just so brilliant to look down
15:37and see, you know, see the...
15:39We flew over Marlow,
15:40which my friend Peter Jones actually lives in Marlow.
15:43So I was up there like flying and looking at his house
15:45and looking down and saying,
15:47Peter, if you could see me now, you know,
15:50as we zoomed along.
15:52So it was beautiful.
15:53Absolutely beautiful.
15:54Thank you very much.
15:54Levi Root.
15:57There you go.
15:58Taking flying lessons,
15:59but always down to earth.
16:01Now, have you came down to earth with a bumper?
16:03Did you manage to work out 614?
16:05Literally a couple of seconds.
16:06So I got to listen to Levi,
16:07which was nice.
16:08If you say 9 plus 2 is 11,
16:11add it to the 100 for 111,
16:14times that by 5 for 555,
16:17and then add the 50 and the second 9.
16:20614.
16:20Brilliant.
16:21We are flying.
16:24And back to the letters.
16:25Helen.
16:25Can I have a consonant, please?

19:07wasn't sure, you actually got the points. So let's find out
19:09what happens. Helen? Curlies?
19:11Um, curlies.
19:15Must have been. Yes, it's not there
19:17on its own. Only in the expression

19:31republics. Fantastic.
19:34Yes, that's right.
19:36And every time
19:37we think Helen's just pulling away,
19:38we get a little twist of the teal.
19:41Well, it's happened again.
19:42And Helen, ten points. Big points in the numbers.
19:45I'll go for one large and five small, please.
19:47Keeping it simple.
19:49We shall see
19:50if those tactics work.
19:52The five little ones.
19:53Four, eight, seven,
19:55nine, and four.
19:57And the large one, 75 this time.
19:59And you need to reach 561.
20:02561.
20:03Numbers up.
20:03And the music.

20:42Helen, off you go for seven points.
20:45So I did 75 times 8.
20:4775 times 8, 600.
20:49And then 9 times 4 is 36.
20:52Yep.
20:52Plus 4.
20:54And take it away.
20:56Yep, one away.
20:57And bring it on home, Rich.
20:58Well, quite a few ways for this one.
21:00One of them, 75 times 7, 525.
21:04And then you can take your 9 times 4 and add it on for 5, 6, 1.
21:08Nice.
21:09APPLAUSE
21:10Give yourself 10 points if you manage to get that at home.
21:15As just for fun, we get our second tea time teaser of this Tuesday afternoon.
21:19Sea teeth.
21:20Sea teeth.
21:21And it's as in the ocean is how we're spelling that.
21:23She knows what she likes and likes what she sees.
21:25She knows what she likes and she likes what she sees.
21:28Hello again.
21:45She knows what she likes and likes what she sees.
21:48I know how to pronounce this because I asked Susie during the break.
21:51Aesthete.
21:52Aesthete.
21:52But it's spelt like aesthetic.
21:54Yes.
21:54But the pronunciation changes.
21:56A little bit, yes.
21:57So, actually, in America, they miss out the beginning A, the opening A altogether.
22:02And it is simply, it's a lovely one, a person who's appreciative of art and beauty.
22:06There you go.
22:07Yeah.

23:30What have you got?
23:31Unpot.
23:33Unpot.
23:34And Helen?
23:35Output.
23:36Yes, output.
23:37Very good indeed.
23:37There is no unpot, unfortunately.
23:40Unlucky.
23:41Dictionary corner.
23:42Yeah, I can't beat L's with output.
23:45That's it.

24:55OK, and Keith?
24:56No, just five.
24:57What's the five, Keith?
24:58Flans.
24:59And Helen?
25:00Inflated.
25:01Very nice.
25:01Yes.
25:04That's what's going to happen to your score.
25:05Another eight on top of it.
25:07Levi, interesting letters, these.
25:08Yeah, I can't beat eight.
25:10There's quite a few eights, but best one here is lanties.
25:14Lanties, yeah.
25:14They are beams that support a wall or other structures.
25:17They're not as you would expect.
25:19She's a whirlwind, Keith.
25:20There's no easy rounds up against our current champion.
25:23The eights, the sevens, really is quite special.
25:26Let's get our origins of words, though, for today, with four rounds left.
25:29So, thank you to Jan Freeman, who wrote in to ask why,
25:34if a necklace goes around your neck and an anklet goes on your ankle,
25:38a bracelet is not called a wristlet.
25:40True.
25:40Yeah.
25:41And it's a very good question.
25:43If you go back to the 19th century,
25:44you will find that a bracelet was, in fact, called a wristlet for a little while.
25:48But a bracelet itself is much, much older.
25:50And the left ending there is just what we would call the diminutive.
25:53So, a booklet is a little book and a bracelet was a little brace.
25:57And brace itself comes from a French word or an Anglo-Norman word
26:02that was in use after the Norman conquest.
26:06Bras, meaning arm.
26:07In modern French, it simply means one arm.
26:09But at the time, it actually could mean both in a sort of embrace, if you like,
26:13which is exactly from the same family.
26:16And the idea was of something held.
26:18So, we talk about a brace of pheasants, which you sort of, you know, I suppose would hold.
26:23Also, the brace on teeth, because it clasps your teeth and supports them.
26:28Embrace, as I say, to clasp with both arms.
26:31And another surprising member of the family, which is brassiere,
26:34which was shortened to bra, of course.
26:37And that was originally used for a piece of armour that supported the arm.
26:41So, it was an arm guard.
26:43And only later did it move to one that protected the chest
26:46or, of course, the breast as we know it today.
26:48So, a bracelet was simply something that clasped your wrist.
26:53It wasn't particularly specific, but it goes back to that very old family
26:57that we have the Normans to thank for.
27:01More letters now. Keith, it's on you.
27:04A consonant, please, Rachel.
27:06Thank you, Keith.
27:07S.
27:08A vowel.

27:19O.
27:20A consonant.

27:24Another consonant.
27:26G.
27:28A vowel.
27:30E.
27:31And a final consonant, please.
27:34Final N.
27:35And let's play.
27:36I.
27:36Talk to you in the US.
27:37I'm sorry.
27:39I'm sorry.

28:18Both excellent.
28:19APPLAUSE
28:21Nice, seven points each on the board.
28:23Levi, how many points am I giving you?
28:25Yeah, we've got an eight here.
28:27Gemstone.
28:28Gemstone.
28:29Nice, well done, well done.
28:3173.

29:43Stories.
29:43Stories.
29:44And tell me a story, Keith, what's the eight?
29:46Jointers.
29:47Very nice indeed.
29:48Well done.
29:51No problems at all from Dictionary Corner.
29:53They give you the green flag immediately.
29:56Eight for jointers.
29:58I flashed up a green flag, an imaginary one.
30:02Jointress for nine.
30:04Jointress for nine.
30:05Yes.
30:06Nothing to do with jointing, actually, and all to do with old law.
30:10And a jointress was a woman who held a jointer, and that was an estate that was settled on her for the period during which she survived her husband, the period that she was alive, essentially.
30:21It's raining nines this week, isn't it?
30:23Yeah.
30:24We've been spoilt so far.
30:25Well done, Keith.
30:26Taking those points off, our great champion.
30:29So it's 73-45.
30:31It's a bridge too far, but half a century looms now for you, Keith.
30:35Last numbers.
30:36One large, please, and the rest small.
30:38Thank you, Keith.
30:39One from the top.
30:40Five not.
30:40Final numbers of the day.
30:43And they are seven, three, six, ten, four, and a large one, 50.
30:49And you need to reach 214.

31:25Keith?
31:26214.
31:27Helen?
31:27214.
31:28Come on, let's get you ten points, please.
31:29Go on, Keith.
31:30Seven minus three is four.
31:32Yes.
31:33Times 50.
31:34200.
31:35Add 10, four.
31:36Nicely done.
31:37Magic.
31:38Helen?
31:39I did four times 50.
31:42200.
31:43And then ten minus six is four.
31:46Yep.
31:46Plus seven, plus three.
31:48Add it on.
31:50So another 14.
31:51Lovely.
31:52APPLAUSE
31:53That is ten points each.
31:56Well, look, Keith, you haven't been able to have your cake and eat it,
32:00but you have been mint.
32:01So thank you for being here.
32:02Let's get you another ten points.
32:03Unless, Helen, you can step in and get today's Countdown Conundrum.
32:08We'll see you next time.
32:09We'll see you next time.
32:09We'll see you next time.
32:40The blanks on today's countdown conundrum.
32:44I'm convinced that Rachel has some sort of pocket conundrum solver
32:49and she's cheating.
32:51Unbelievable.
32:51You got it straight away.
32:52I didn't see it either.
32:53What is it?
32:54I think it's residency.
32:55Let's have a little look.
32:57Look at that.
32:59It wasn't a beat for you, Keith,
33:01but you go back to Kendall with all our love
33:03and thank you for the present.
33:06I'm beaten by someone who really excites me.
33:08By the way, I've loved the three wins so far
33:10and, Helen, I was thinking
33:13if you were to bring us something from Wigan,
33:15I don't think it would travel well
33:17because it's the pie barm, isn't it?
33:19Yeah, pie barm.
33:20Yeah.
33:20So, for those who don't not know,
33:22a meat pie inside a buttered roll.
33:25Yeah, also known as a wig and kebab.
33:29I love that.
33:30I'll make you a deal.
33:31If you become an octo-champ,
33:33we'll work out some way of getting a wig and kebab in here,
33:36all right?
33:36See what I can do.
33:37I promise you, we'll work on it together.
33:39I'll see you tomorrow and you, Levi, and you, Susie.
33:42Yeah, see you then.
33:42Excellent.
33:43And your face there.
33:45Well, I'm not sure if you know,
33:46but obviously 49 years ago today,
33:47we mentioned one flew over the cuckoo's nest came out.
33:5011 years before that,
33:51a baby lexicographer was born.
33:53No.
33:54Well, because Susie keeps her birthdays
33:56very, very, very quiet indeed,
33:59but today's the big day.
34:01I've got some Kendall mint cake.
34:02Exactly.
34:03It's my need.
34:03I'm so thoughtful.
34:05That's my present to you, not Keith.
34:07Thanks for this, Keith.
34:07Don't thank Keith.
34:08You gave it to me, I re-gifted it.
34:10I re-gifted that.
34:11It was even worse.
34:13Are we going to go out on the tour after the show?
34:15Oh, we're definitely going to go and have some wig and kebabs.
34:17Yeah.
34:18Nothing's going to stop us now.
34:20What a night out that would be.
34:21Susie Dent, a wig and kebab.
34:23We'll try and make it in the studio in time for tomorrow.
34:26We'll be here.
