00:30Hello everybody, Tuesday afternoon. Thank you so much for tuning in to Countdown. For the next 45 minutes or so, we've got you covered. So just take a load off. And Rachel Riley, you'll be thrilled to know that we've got an animal day today. World Kangaroo Day.
00:47Never celebrated that before. Funny enough, I haven't either. In fact, and I was just thinking about this this morning, I've never met a kangaroo. I don't have any phone numbers for kangaroos in my phones. I don't count. I don't have a single kangaroo as a friend. I don't think I've ever seen a kangaroo in real life.
01:03No, I mean, the closest I've come is a wallaby. They have plenty of wallabies in zoos and, you know, little farms for kids, but I've never seen a kangaroo.
01:10OK, well, we don't have any kangaroo anecdotes, which is a shame. You've not eaten any kangaroo, have you?
01:15Haven't it? No. Kangaroo is not on the menu. But let's hop over the dictionary corner and there she is, our guardian of the dictionary, Susie Dent, ready to go into battle again.
01:24And we're delighted to have the author and comedian Mark Watson making his debut this week.
01:31I'm exhausted. I couldn't really sleep knowing that World Kangaroo Day was coming up.
01:35Yeah, but you've toured Australia a few times.
01:37I have met a kangaroo, I've fed one. I have also once, I have to admit, eaten kangaroo.
01:42And just in terms of you saying you've never met one or even got any contacts, I reckon just with what's on my phone book, I couldn't get a kangaroo here.
01:49But you're one degree of separation from a kangaroo just by being with me here.
01:53See, closer than we think on this special day.
01:56Well, listen, Barry's leapt into a three-game record so far and decent scores every time.
02:03Barry, just flirting with the century, you haven't quite managed that. Is that in your head a bit?
02:07Not at all.
02:08Yes, it is. You're lying to me.
02:10Is this the most dangerous thing you've ever done in your life, a plan to come on countdown? Is there anything else comparable?
02:15I think maybe this or maybe jumping out of a plane a couple of decades ago. So one or the other.
02:22Wow. Well, listen, going for the fourth win today as you take another leap of faith, you're going up against Laura Brookfield.
02:29How are you doing, Laura?
02:29I'm fine, thank you.
02:30Good stuff.
02:31Joining us from Reading, and I love this about you because Laura is my super gran.
02:35So you write short stories for your grandchildren. How many are your grandchildren?
02:41Eight.
02:42Eight?
02:43Yeah.
02:43So is it how many boys, girls?
02:45Four of each.
02:45Four, perfect right.
02:46Yeah.
02:47Absolutely perfect.
02:48So what are the books about? Like any star kangaroos? Give me one of the storylines.
02:53I was just sat in the garden one day with a load of bits and pieces and eating an ice cream and named one of them Mango, the little people.
03:00Yeah.
03:00And my daughter brought me a camper van, a little garden planter. So I just sat and wrote stories about it and then read them to my grandchildren at bedtime.
03:11I love that. Do you ever think about publishing them?
03:13No.
03:14Well, you never know. A lot of people sit with these great books and they don't realise that there'd be kids everywhere.
03:18I want to read about Mango and the camper van. I don't know about anybody else. And I'm 46. Think about it, Laura.
03:24Right, Laura and Barry, best of luck.
03:25Mr. Wood, let's go.

10:59We have goiter, which is such a favourite countdown word,
11:02but you can add the D if you are afflicted with that swelling.
11:06Goited. That would be a seven.
11:07You are afflicted with that swelling.

12:32Exactly.
12:32That's all we've got, yeah.
12:33That's it. Straightforward is that. A couple of sevens.
12:36The spoils shared and it's 33.19.
12:39Second numbers round of the day.
12:41And, Lor, you're in charge of your own destiny here.
12:44Can I have one from the top, please, Rachel?
12:46You can indeed. One large.
12:48And five more little ones coming up.
12:50But this time, your numbers are four.
12:53Five.
12:53Nine.
12:55Six.
12:55Ten.
12:56And the big one, 50.

13:15Ten.
13:16You.
13:17The third one.
13:17One, two, eight.
13:20You.

13:21One, two.
13:22One, two, there.
13:23One.
13:23Two, five.
13:24One, two, three.
13:25One, two, three.
13:25One, two, three.
13:25Lower.
13:34One, two, nine.
13:35One away. Barry?
13:36And two, four.
13:37You are both having a nightmare today with the numbers,
13:41but, Laura, you're closer for seven points.
13:43So, then, nine plus four is 13 times ten.
13:4713 times ten, one, thirty.
13:50And then six minus five for the one to make one, two, nine.
13:53One away.
13:54Yes, indeed.
13:55Right, one, two, eight.
13:57Get those feet ready again for a good self-kicking.
13:59Off we go.
14:00Oh, well, a couple of ways.
14:03One of them, nine plus four, 13.
14:0613 times six, 78.
14:09And add the 50, one, two, eight.
14:11Nice, well done.
14:15And the dictionary corner, Mark,
14:16we'll be talking about your book Mortification.
14:19Comedians always seem, when you say,
14:20tell us a story about stand-up comedy,
14:22they'll always go to their worst gig.
14:24They never go, well, I remember the night I played for 90 minutes
14:28and they were, there was broken ribs.
14:31Yeah, although that can have its own negative consequences, of course.
14:35Something to do with, I think this might be a cultural difference as well,
14:37because I was talking about this to comedians recently.
14:39In America, I think there is more of a culture of feelings if you have to sell yourself.
14:44So if you're not, you can't generalise,
14:46but if you hang out with American comedians,
14:47a lot of their stories will be about,
14:50and I killed, and, like, the guy wants to give me more money at the end.
14:54Whereas, yeah, British comedians almost always exchange terrible war stories.
14:57I don't really know why exactly,
14:59except it's maybe it's because we perceive that's what people want to hear.
15:03Like, the question people most often ask you is,
15:06have you ever had a terrible heckler or a terrible death?
15:09I would never insult you by asking you for, you know, your worst gig ever.
15:13But let me ask you this, what is your least favourite gig ever?
15:16Yeah, that is quite a different question, actually.
15:20I think...
15:21I've done...
15:24I have to be a little bit careful,
15:25because I could meet any of these people again, of course.
15:27But I've done a number of corporate events
15:31where you're hosting awards and that kind of thing,
15:34as you probably have done,
15:35and a lot of them are very pleasant.
15:36But I once hosted...
15:39I believe it was called the Waste Management Awards in Birmingham,
15:43and it doesn't sound like a subject you can get a lot of comedy out of,
15:46and it wasn't in the event.
15:48And it actually wasn't hostile.
15:49I just remember complete indifference.
15:51People think that comedians fear the room sort of turning violently against you,
15:54but at least you can negotiate that to something.
15:57You can play with it.
15:58I think the worst gigs are ones...
15:59In fact, the worst gigs I've had will be ones that I've forgotten,
16:02because just nothing happened at all.
16:04Being ignored?
16:05Yeah.
16:06A flat gig is almost...
16:07I remember doing one in a leisure centre.
16:09Again, early in your career, you'll take anything.
16:12It wasn't until I got to the address I became aware
16:14it was not so much a club and more a leisure centre.
16:19And as I was on stage...
16:20Well, there wasn't a stage either.
16:21I actually asked the fellow for a microphone,
16:23and people were just sort of bouncing around on trampolines as I spoke.
16:27I remember walking away from that thinking,
16:29I'm going to check a bit more carefully
16:30whether it is a recognised comedy venue next time.
16:33Love it. Thank you, mate.
16:34Right, survival of the fittest here.
16:40I want to start.
16:41Our challenger, Lor Brookfield, has a 40-19 lead,
16:45but, Lor, beware the wounded Barry,
16:48because yesterday he came back and he could well do it again.
16:52Long way to go.
16:53And, Barry, you're choosing these letters.
16:54A consonant, please, Rachel.
16:56Thank you, Barry.

18:22Struggled to get beyond that.
18:23Did you manage it?
18:23Did you break through?
18:24There is a seven.

23:58do let's see if you can do it in this round a consonant please Rachel thank you Barry M and a
24:05vowel U a consonant S a vowel O a consonant N another consonant D a vowel
24:22E a consonant L and another consonant please and lastly R kind of
24:52Barry try an eight okay and lower I'll try an eight good stuff Barry and your suspenseful pauses
25:11what have you got it's not written down but remoulds remoulds with the OU and lower
25:18mounders and mounders now Barry seems on safer ground for me but yeah absolutely right remoulds
25:27absolutely right they can be tires like retreads or you can remould something not so sure about
25:34mounder it's not in I'm afraid really interesting letters a lot going on what else do we have
25:40roundels round all small discs especially decorative medallions and you can also unsolder
25:48something said that would undo the soldering of something so that'll give you another eight
25:52really involved right the upshot of it all is it's going to be an epic finish to today's countdown
25:56and a rather cruel place at times I always think for the champion and challenger when we pause at this
26:01moment but we love it because it's origins of words what we're talking about today susie going
26:06back to kangaroos just because the word is one of quite a few actually that was introduced into
26:12english by captain cook so james cook in his travel journal journals 1770s introduced this to many
26:21tattoo is one of them from the polynesian languages of the pacific but kangaroo another one from an aboriginal
26:28languages you might expect but there is a sort of bit of an urban myth around this one which is that
26:32cook saw these animals that he'd never witnessed for the for you know at all um and uh he asked a local
26:40what they were called in their native language and what was said to have come back was uh i don't
26:45understand um and so it said that kangaroo translated that i don't understand but there is absolutely no
26:50evidence for that whatsoever but it is quite a sweet story um but as i say grew up around that but the
26:55other thing that um i've often been asked about particularly this year is a kangaroo court because
27:00we have heard that uh used quite a lot together with witch hunt um certainly over in the us where
27:07politics are concerned but what has a kind of judicial or an unfair judicial tribunal have to do with
27:13the marsupial you might think and we're not completely sure first recorded in 1853 um around the time of
27:21uh the gold rush uh so the gold rush has given us so many different words in english that wouldn't be
27:26surprising if this dated from there as well so some people think it's because these are rapid they're
27:32unpredictable um like the animal just sort of hopping from place to place uh there is another theory
27:38um that it relates to jumping which was slang for illegally occupying a claim but we're not completely
27:45sure why a kangaroo court but um as i say a question that's being asked a lot i think i prefer the
27:51you know unpredictable and hence not completely sound thank you
27:58right here we go four rounds to go 13 point lead for lore brookfield our challengers barry tries to
28:04win his fourth let's see what happens lower consonant please rachel thank you lower t and another one s and one more
