00:31Hello, everybody. It's the last Countdown of the week, and here you come again.
00:35Whether you're tuning in on a day off or it's just a little break from your 9 to 5,
00:39thank you very much for watching Countdown today.
00:42And there's my island in the stream, Rachel Riley. How are you?
00:44I forgot that was her as well. I spotted these Easter eggs.
00:48Yes, absolutely. Dolly Parton is 78 today.
00:51A great musician, a great songwriter, a great singer,
00:55and maybe at the top of the list is a phenomenal businesswoman as well over the years.
01:01Are you a fan?
01:02Yeah, I bought cake, I bought presents, I'm holding a party.
01:06What, for Dolly Parton today?
01:08She shares her birthday with a certain Russian dancer as well.
01:12Oh, is it Pasha's birthday today?
01:13It's his birthday as well, so I always remember Dolly's birthday.
01:17Imagine if they knew each other and had a joint birthday party. That would be the coolest thing ever.
01:20I mean, that'd be a happy birthday dance, wouldn't it?
01:23All right, the Dictionary Corner and all this week, our Guardian of the Dictionary,
01:27Susie Dent, has been joined by someone we knew as a great writer, great presenter, restaurateur.
01:33We're going to add Farmer to that list this week and so many more things.
01:36Prue Leith.
01:40And Prue for most of the week, we've been in the company of Mark Finnerty,
01:43who's got three wins now. He's from Newry and County Down.
01:46We've got to know about his son, Owen. His wife, Dawn, has been here with us as well.
01:50She's better company than you, to be honest, Mark.
01:53But why did you apply to be on Countdown?
01:55Because Dawn tells me it's years and years of you going, I could do that, but eventually applied.
02:00It's because of you, Colin.
02:02Oh, listen, you're back in my good books.
02:03I'm taking over and I fast forward through less of it now.
02:08I didn't say anything. I did not say anything.
02:11I will swiftly just say you're up against Kevin Cornell, who lives in Eastbourne.
02:16And a lot of people finish work, especially on a Friday like today, and they pour themselves a nice drink at the end of the week.
02:24It's the opposite for you. You went to work for a lot of your career and poured yourself a drink.
02:28Tell me about that.
02:29Well, I worked in the licence trade for 40 years, Colin, calling on many pubs and many clubs, selling drinks and beer to the publicans.
02:39Oh, brilliant. So, like, coming in with a product and saying, hey, we'll do this little thing.
02:44So, if I want to do, what area of Britain would you be the best pub crawl guide?
02:49Oh, Kenton Sussex, without any sign of it.
02:51Every pub there you've been to?
02:52I know Kenton Sussex by pubs. Every village, all the pubs in Kenton Sussex, most of them I know.
02:58Ah, I think that's brilliant. Right, Kevin, we'll get to know you today.
03:01We'll stay sober, though. Good luck to you and Mark.
03:03First round is letters, as you know, and champion's choice.

10:06Although, Kevin, there, with those six points, gets back within one point.
10:10Sue Prue.
10:11Well, I don't know what that means, so I think you'll have to explain it.
10:14Well, it's, again, a bit of a countdown word, this one,
10:17but omental is the adjective relating to the omentum,
10:22which is a fold of peritoneum in the abdomen,
10:25and it connects other abdominal organs.

11:57No, gapiest, but not gapiest. I'm sorry, Mark.
12:00Prue, did you see anything to impress us?
12:03We have something called adjusted.
12:06Yes.

13:21And 7 minus 2 is 5, and add it on.
13:24Perfect.
13:25Nice. And Mark?
13:26100 minus 25 is 75, times 4 for 300.
13:31300 again.
13:32And 7 minus 2 is 5 again.
13:34Yep, lots of variations on a theme.
13:36It's going to be a close run thing today.
13:40It's been a while, Mark, since you've been pushed like this.
13:43Kevin has a four-point leader.
13:45Final chat with Prue this week.
13:47And we've really just been, as we said in Northern Ireland,
13:49we've just been gabbing, haven't we?
13:50More than any.
13:51So just following on from what we're saying.
13:53You are so, so busy, right?
13:55And you were saying yesterday, is it 84 at the moment?
13:59Nearly.
14:00Nearly 84, next month.
14:0284.
14:03Any intention to say, hey, look, all this stuff I've done,
14:08got to slow down a bit?
14:09You know, every year I have the intention of slowing down a bit,
14:13and I never do.
14:14I mean, I really am the woman.
14:17I can hardly say the girl who can't say no.
14:20But the old lady who can't say no.
14:22Wow.
14:23So...
14:24But, I mean, I am definitely feeling my age.
14:27We were holidaying in the Mediterranean,
14:29and we were on one of those boats which goes to cruise into a bay,
14:33and it's a great big boat with about 50 people on it.
14:36And everybody, when we got to this beautiful bay,
14:40everybody went swimming, you see.
14:42And so I thought, well, I can't not do that.
14:46So I climbed down the ladder and I swim around this beautiful,
14:50clear water.
14:52And then, of course, I couldn't get up.
14:54And so I thought, well, I'm going to just...
14:56They're going to be left behind.
14:58So the captain, the skipper, came down and he said,
15:01don't worry, he said, we'll get a few hefty lads behind you
15:04and they'll shove you up.
15:05And I thought, this is going to be so inelegant.
15:08Of course, by now I had an audience.
15:10And then I had a brilliant idea because, you know,
15:13they gave us those things you swim with.
15:15I think they're called noodles.
15:16Yeah.
15:17You know, a long sort of plastic-y thing.
15:19Anyway, I put it behind my back and got the ends up.
15:23And I said to the skipper, you pull on those ends.
15:26So he bent down, grabbed the ends of the noodles
15:29and he pulled and I climbed.
15:31I'll tell you what it worked to treat.
15:33And he said, I'm going to have a thing designed.
15:35Yes.
15:36Because he said, I often struggle getting people up this bit.
15:38Yeah.
15:39Well, look, when I hit about 84,
15:41I hope I'm feeling my age the way that you are, Prue.
15:44Thank you so much.
15:45APPLAUSE
15:48All right, this show will put years on you when it's close.

17:46If you live in North America, you might know they're pleasure rides that you take in a hay wagon.
17:50Yeah, loads of them on Halloween, big Halloween, sort of, you go to the pumpkin patches and the farms and the hay rides for the kids.
17:58Ab.
17:58And all that stuff.
17:59That was a lovely journey through those words.

19:28What can we add?
19:29Well, we've got two more with eight.
19:31One is imposter, which I understand, and the other is...
19:35Pastory.
19:36Pastory.
19:36Yes, it sounds like a food.
19:38Yes, is it a pastry shop?
19:40No.
19:41In South Africa, it's the residence of a minister of one of the Dutch
19:44reformed churches.
19:45Oh, right, I should know that if I'm South African.
19:47Yeah.
19:48Pastory.
19:49Pastory.
19:49I feel like you led Prue down the garden path a little bit there,
19:52you know.
19:53I know.
19:53It sounds like radishy, pastory.
19:56OK, 50 plus 39.
19:58That can change in a flash, because 10 points up for grabs again
20:01in our third numbers round.
20:03And Mark?
20:04Let's try six small, Richard.
20:08Yeah, I think numbers are your secret weapon.
20:09So six small to try and get a bit more of a lead.
20:13Let's see how your tactics work.
20:15They are seven, nine, eight, seven, eight, and one.
20:22And a target, 460.
20:24460.
20:25Numbers up.
20:384-6-0, Mark.
20:584-5-8.
21:00Two away. Kevin?
21:02Lost it completely.
21:03Yeah, you and many others. So, Mark?
21:068 times 8, 64.
21:098 times 8, 64.
21:11Times 7.
21:12Times 7 is 400...
21:1548.
21:16Yes.
21:17Plus 9, plus 1.
21:19Then 9 plus 1, 10, and 2 below.
21:22I'll get you. Can we get to 4-6-0?
21:24I can give you 51 nines for 459, but this was impossible.
21:29One away was the best.
21:30Excellent. Well done, Rich. Thank you very much.
21:32Seven points for you, Mark, and well done for pronouncing 8 properly.
21:35I don't know how all these other ones pronounce it, but anyway.
21:38And, Kev, a tea-time teaser for you.
21:40It's Wine Roar.
21:42Wine Roar.
21:43Think pans, people.
21:45Think top of the pops.
21:47Think pans, people.
21:48Think top of the pots.
21:49APPLAUSE
21:58Hello again.
22:05Last tea-time teaser of the week, then.
22:07Think pans, people.
22:08Think top of the pots.
22:10Not pops.
22:11It's ironware.
22:13Right.
22:1357.
22:1439.
22:16Kevin, do or die time.
22:17Off we go.
22:17Consonant, please, Rachel.
22:19Thank you, Kevin.
22:20W.
22:22Another.
22:23L.
22:25A third.
22:27N.
22:28Vowel.
22:29I.
22:31Another vowel.
22:32E.
22:34Consonant.
22:36G.
22:38Consonant.
22:39R.
22:41Vowel.
22:42E.
22:44And a final consonant, please.
22:50Final T.
22:51Let's play.
22:52–
22:59–
23:02I.
23:08–
23:08OK, Kevin, how did you fare? Six.
23:25Six from you and Mark? Seven.
23:28I'm going to try a seven. Kevin, what's the six? Tingle.
23:31Tingle and Mark? Reeling.
23:34Reeling with a tease. Yeah, absolutely fine.
23:36She was reeling from the news. Yeah, very good.
23:39Excellent. Well, Kevin reeling a little bit from that.
23:42Nine, seven. We had the ING there, the ER.
23:45How did we get on the dictionary corner?
23:47It's a nine and it's weltering.
23:50Oh. Weltering.
23:52OK, let's try and guess between us.
23:53When you welt a ball, I know there's a welt in a ball.
23:57I've heard that used. I think it's a farming thing.
24:00Well, you know how we talk about, well, there's a welter of rules.
24:05There's just a whole lot of rules. So it's linked to that.
24:07And to welter, particularly water, is to move in a really turbulent way.
24:12It's to swirl about, really. Brilliant.
24:14Yeah, welter.
24:17Brilliant. Right, 64-39, the scores.
24:21Big nine from dictionary corner there.
24:22More letters from Mark.
24:24Could I have a consonant, please?
24:26Thank you, Mark.
24:27Good luck.
25:27All right, Mark? Seven. Seven from you. Kevin, how did you get on? Seven. Well done. Mark?
25:33Savours. Savours, yeah. Same word. Yeah, I thought so.
25:37Jumped out a little bit that. Shame there was no why we could add savoury with Prue, Leith and Dictionary Corner, but what did we get?
25:44No, we didn't do any better. No. Amours. Nice one. Your loves. Amours. Beautiful word.
25:5271.46, four rounds left in countdown today. So the gap's considerable but not insurmountable as we get our last Origins Awards of the Week.
26:01Susie Den. Well, I only discovered quite recently, Colin, that the triangular pointy things at the end of an anchor,
26:09so just look at any image of an anchor, particularly in its sort of traditional shape, and you'll see that it's got these little triangular points at the end of each arm.
26:18And these are called flukes, which I wasn't aware of. And it got me thinking about the origin of a fluke, as in, oh, that was a lucky fluke.
26:27You know, where does that one come from and are they related? Well, the answer is no. There are actually several types of fluke.
26:32There's a fluke called a flat fish as well, and it's possible that the anchor tips are related to that because the fluke there comes from an old Germanic word meaning flat.
26:44So that's a possible link, both nautical, really, I suppose, in their origins.
26:49That leaves a lucky accident sense of fluke. And this one is a bit of a mystery.
26:54So we do have an early record of it from the mid-1800s, and it was a billiards term, and it meant a lucky shot,
27:02which is pretty much how we would still use it today, oh, that was a fluke.
27:06In other words, you can't really repeat it. But we've never really been able to pin down the origin of that.
27:12But it did begin, then, very quickly to be used to mean a stroke of good luck in some way.
27:17Some linguists have said that perhaps it comes from an old dialect word meaning a guess.
27:22And the idea then is, again, of nothing pinned down.
27:25It's something that is sort of almost up to fate as to whether you're right or wrong.
27:29But, yeah, we still don't know what, you know, where that particular fluke comes from.
27:35But the fluke that's a flat fish and the fluke that is the pointy tips at the end of an anchor,
27:40those all come from an old word meaning flat.
27:42Thank you very much.
27:43APPLAUSE
27:46All right, four rounds to go.

29:06Aye, aye.
29:06Well spotted.
29:07Captain for a seven.
29:11Very good.
29:11They felt more generous letters than maybe they actually were overall.
29:15But how did you get on in Dictionary Corner?
29:17We got a seven as well on Fnatic.
29:20Fnatic.
29:21We were all hoping for face paint, but it's two words.
29:26Oh, yeah, very good indeed, but doesn't count.
29:28People be screaming that at the TV now.
29:30You can't have it.
29:31You can't have it.

30:48And Kevin? Dodgier.
30:50Dodgier, rowdies.
30:52Yep, absolutely fine. Noisy and disorderly people.
30:55Absolutely fine.
30:56Yeah. And what else have you got there?
30:59We've got wordies.
31:01Oh, is that in?
31:02Yes, as in a wee word.
31:05A wee word, wordies.

32:12No, I lost you.
32:13Yeah, Mark?
32:14Yes, not written down.
32:16Wow, you must have got that late because you were in all sorts of panic after 26.
32:20Seven seconds.
32:20Off you go.
32:21Oh.
32:2425 times 4 is 100.
32:28Yes.
32:28Minus 3 is 97.
32:315 plus 1 is 6.
32:34Hopefully multiply them together.
32:36Perfect.
32:37Well done.
32:38That's a 1.
32:41Very good indeed.
32:42And Rich, you're absolutely right.
32:43The numbers are his secret weapon, aren't they, to these really high scores that he's putting up?
32:48Very good.
32:48Very strong player.
32:49But wouldn't it be such a shame if you finished the week without getting a century?
32:53Because your three wins so far have all been over 100.
32:55And some would view it as a failure.
32:57If you didn't manage to do it today, we will find out.
33:00Let's get your finger on the buzzer, Mark.
33:02Kevin, you too.
33:03Last round of the week.
33:04Let's make it a good in.
33:05And of course, it's Friday's Countdown Conundrum.
33:12Mark.
33:13Pilloween?
33:15Pilloween.
33:15He's done it.
33:20Never asleep in the job is our champion, Mark Finnerty.
33:23105 to our dear other three centuries.
33:27And by the way, Mark, 1-8 highest score of the series so far.
33:32So you should be so pleased with your week, right?
33:35It's been good.
33:36I've had worse weeks.
33:38Okay.
33:38Oh, great.
33:39Leave us a review online, won't you, after that.
33:42Right, we'll see you back on Monday.
33:43Thank you, mate.
33:44And listen, Kevin, we'll raise a glass to you.
33:46Thank you very much.
33:47Pleasure to have you in here.
33:48Your smile, your demeanour.
33:49Thank you so much.
33:51Excellent.
33:52Prue, best of luck with the Cotswolds kitchen in February.
33:55On television.
33:56Thank you for being here.
33:57I've loved it.
33:58Brilliant.
33:58It's been great to have you.
33:59Susie, we'll see you Monday.
34:00Yeah, I look forward to it.
34:01Happy weekend.
34:01And before Prue goes, can I actually pitch an idea?
34:04I mean, I love the Bake Off, and I know there's the professionals
34:06and there's the kids' Bake Off.
34:08My idea is just regular contestants, but each one is paired up
34:11with a really enthusiastic three-year-old who wants to help with everything.
34:14I think it'd be brilliant.
34:16I think that's a winner.
34:19There we go.
34:20Let's talk to Channel 4.
34:21We know some people.
34:23Yeah, because Prue hasn't got enough work at the moment.
34:26She'll do it, though.
34:27She never says no.
34:28She never says no.
34:30And either do we, then other Countdown.
34:31We're back Monday, same time, same place.
34:34Have a good weekend, everyone.
34:35We'll see you then in Countdown Us.
