00:00And for Christmas, he's going one step further by putting his lifelike cakes up against the real things,
00:07taking on teams who are masters at bringing Christmas to life,
00:11going head-to-head against Broadway set designers,
00:16glass blowers,
00:19animatronics experts,
00:21and toy brick builders.
00:25But they'll use whatever materials they choose,
00:28while Buddy must use cake.
00:31It's bakers versus makers, as both teams have just 24 hours.
00:36When it's Christmas Eve, you've got to deliver.
00:38To see who can make the most incredible holiday displays,
00:41win $5,000 for a charity of their choosing,
00:45and claim the ultimate bragging rights as...
00:47They're going down.
00:49The team who conquered Christmas.
00:51Christmas!
00:52This is Buddy versus Christmas.
00:55Merry Christmas!
00:58All right.
01:08What is that?
01:08Why is there a donk?
01:10What?
01:11Play me.
01:12All right, how do you play it?
01:15Hi, buddy.
01:16I've been sent by Lou Nasty.
01:18He's been making Christmas displays for over 40 years.
01:22Prepare to lose and Merry Christmas.
01:25This guy Lou is really trying to push my buttons, huh?
01:31I think he just did.
01:31I say we let him have it.
01:33This week, we're going up against Lou Nasty,
01:36who's a mechanical engineer and an animatronics expert
01:39who does, like, all the big department store windows.
01:43He's a modern-day Geppetto,
01:44and he's been doing this for longer than I've been alive.
01:47What's the challenge?
01:50What are we working on here?
01:51The challenge is Santa's workshop.
01:53The special skill set is storytelling.
01:57Santa's workshop, you think of building toys, stuff like that.
02:01So on my team this week is Ralph, who's my head sculptor.
02:05My brother-in-law, Mo.
02:06Mo can build anything.
02:08My brother-in-law, Mauro, he's a utility man.
02:11Ana is a sculptor, a decorator,
02:13and a great addition to the team.
02:16When I think of Santa's workshop,
02:18I think of lots of magical little Mo's.
02:21Hey, that's me.
02:22Making toys.
02:23Like, toys being assembled on, like, an assembly line.
02:26This guy is going to have movement with his animatronics,
02:30so I think that we've got to have movement.
02:33Courtney Quinn and Jason Chatfield,
02:36they're the best judges.
02:37I mean, who knows how to better tell a story than Jason?
02:41He's a cartoonist.
02:42Can this be the part of Santa's workshop
02:43where they make the Christmas cookies and cakes and stuff?
02:46Because that's a little more in line with what we do.
02:48So we're calling it, like, Santa's workshop-slash-bakery?
02:52It's Carlo's North Pole location.
02:56You see pieces of cakes coming in one end,
02:59going to, like, something, and then coming out as cakes.
03:02Maybe there's, like, something there in the middle
03:05where there's, like, a breaking point.
03:07You can swap them out, like a decorating machine.
03:10Kind of like they come in a cake,
03:12and that's the magic elf machine,
03:14and then it comes out something wild,
03:16like a finished decorated cake.
03:18We're going to make the North Pole Carlo's Bakery edition.
03:22It's going to feature a huge storefront
03:24with a rolling conveyor belt
03:26manned by Santa's elves.
03:28Then the unfinished cakes come through here.
03:32I'm going to say Moe will be inside.
03:34Oh, okay.
03:35And they get swapped out for finished ones that go out there.
03:38Unfinished cakes will go into the machine
03:40called Elph-O-Matic,
03:42and then, boom,
03:43they're going to come out magically decorated.
03:46Why don't you three go start in the construction of it?
03:48Okay.
03:49Me and Ana will start making the cakes.
03:51All right?
03:52And then you jump in on the elves.
03:53Deal.
03:54Sure.
03:54Let's do it.
03:56Rock and roll.
03:58Watch out for the dog.
04:02Okay, come on, guys.
04:03Let's go.
04:04We got a job to do.
04:05All right.
04:06Woo-hoo.
04:07Come on.
04:07My name is Lou Nasty,
04:08and I am an animator.
04:10I build mechanical animated displays.
04:13Robots.
04:14I bring smiles to many people,
04:16and that's a gift for me.
04:17Good morning, everybody.
04:18Good morning.
04:19My nasty crew, huh?
04:20Our challenge is to build Santa's workshop.
04:24Now, we've done that.
04:25We could do a workshop one night.
04:26Easy peasy.
04:27One eye closed and one arm behind our back.
04:29But now we've got competition,
04:30and it's got to tell a story.
04:32My team, Stephen, my son-in-law,
04:35does carpentry.
04:36Rosie does the costuming.
04:39Jose is with me 19 years.
04:41One of the things he does is a lot of the carpentry.
04:44And Deborah, Deborah paints the faces.
04:47She does the artwork.
04:48She even does sculpting.
04:49There will be toys in all these shelves.
04:52How many shelves are we building?
04:53We're probably going to do about 50, 60 shelves.
04:55How many elves?
04:56Four or five elves.
04:58We'll do a dog.
04:59It's always cute to have a dog in the seat
05:00because they look cute.
05:01Do I paint all the toys?
05:03You're going to paint the toys.
05:04You're going to paint the faces on the figures.
05:06Inside the workshop, there will be elves.
05:08Hard at work making the toys,
05:11cutting the wood, drilling, painting.
05:14I'm going to put the reindeer in this area.
05:15Off to the side of the platform or on the platform?
05:17No, no, no.
05:18It won't fit in the platform.
05:19The reindeer is outside.
05:20He kind of takes the elves back and forth to work every day.
05:23And then, of course, talking reindeer, that's my talent.
05:27Making things look alive.
05:29Are we all together on this?
05:30We're all together.
05:31Buddy thinks he's going to outshine us.
05:34Wait till he sees the finished product.
05:35Maybe he'll drop his cake.
05:38Nah, let's not wish him bad luck.
05:39Okay, guys, let's go.
05:41We're ready.
05:41Let's do it.
05:42Hello.
05:44Hello, what's going on?
05:45How are you guys doing?
05:46Hello, Mr. Buddy.
05:48I got your dog.
05:49I locked him up.
05:51You got the dog, huh?
05:53Watch out, he bites.
05:54So do I.
05:56What are you making?
05:57Something fun?
05:58Our display is going to be about 11 foot across,
06:01and it's a toy shop.
06:03Christmas toy shop.
06:05Ours is going to be about 11 foot across,
06:08and it's a toy shop, too.
06:09Well, it's a big shop.
06:10Wow.
06:11Are you using butter and cream?
06:13What are you using steel and gears?
06:14What's he trying to say?
06:16We have to beat them now.
06:18All right, guys.
06:19We'll see you.
06:24My art is cake, and I want to win with cake.
06:27You know, doing these competitions,
06:28you do the over-the-top sculptures or whatever,
06:31but there's just something beautiful
06:32about a simple Christmas cake
06:34that's decorated or piped,
06:36and to showcase all these things
06:38coming out of this big, huge thing,
06:41I think it's going to be like the cherry on top.
06:44Christmas time.
06:45It's a Christmas.
06:49Steven and Jose have to complete
06:51the structure of the shop.
06:54I've never built a display this quickly.
06:57My job as the animator
06:59is to make things look alive.
07:01I am going to start with the elves.
07:03I'm going to have elves working on a drill press,
07:07sawing wood, sanding and cleaning everything,
07:09and painting at the same time.
07:11I need to just do the linkage on this now.
07:13I made the motor mount,
07:14and I did the paint to hold the figure.
07:16Best quality.
07:17My mechanical figures move with electricity.
07:20I can make things go back and forth,
07:23up and down, left to right.
07:25I can make things bow,
07:26and that by connecting different motors
07:28and different parts together,
07:30I can make many different movements.
07:33I think one of the things
07:34that's unique about what I do
07:36is that not many people do this.
07:39Animation is not something
07:40you go to school to learn.
07:42It's sort of a passion.
07:44Okay.
07:45At a very young age,
07:47I was able to build a robot.
07:49And it was a big robot, six foot,
07:52and I wound up on the front page
07:53of the New York Times,
07:54and it changed my life.
07:56I realized at that point,
07:58I did have a talent for this type of work.
08:01I think the thing that wows people
08:03is the complexity of my projects.
08:05You can have one figure,
08:07and it's really entertaining,
08:08and it's adorable.
08:08You can have two figures,
08:09and it's even twice as entertaining.
08:11But you put 20 figures together,
08:13you have music connected,
08:14you put lighting in there
08:15and effects with different types
08:17of lighting and smoke.
08:18You can create a mechanical marvel.
08:26Right now, we're working on the structure
08:29for the actual cake.
08:31We have to have the rails coming in perfect
08:33so they can come in through this hole.
08:34So they're going to go in one hole,
08:36go down the ramp.
08:37Mo's going to do the official switch.
08:39Mo's in there.
08:40He takes the cake when it comes through here.
08:43Then puts a finished cake
08:45on the exit side of the rollers.
08:49Okay.
08:49So I have to paint five of these.
08:57Santa's workshop is going to have
09:00five or six elves.
09:02I'm painting all the faces.
09:03I like the one that has a smirk.
09:08Like this one.
09:09He's got a real...
09:12sassy little smile there.
09:16So this is basic skin color,
09:18and then I'll just take it from there
09:19and lighten it or darken it.
09:22Changing the skin color a little.
09:25Eye color, putting different hair,
09:27making one a male, one a female.
09:30Yeah, like that.
09:31It's very hard to get the eyelashes,
09:33so I'm trying to do wings.
09:35You know, those elf-looking wings.
09:38I'm doing pockets for the little elves' jeans.
09:42Their backs are pretty much going to be
09:44toward the back of the workshop.
09:47But still, if one of them rotates,
09:49then you'll see it.
09:51The details are very time-consuming,
09:53but it is fun to do.
09:54And it does matter.
09:56They show.
09:57You know, people look at little details.
10:00Definitely.
10:00On the first day of Christmas,
10:04my true love gave to me...
10:06cake.
10:09On the second day of Christmas,
10:11my true love gave to me...
10:13two cakes.
10:14and a cake.
10:18I'm making the two elves
10:20who are working the assembly line.
10:22So I'm a little envious of how
10:24Mr. Nasty gets to work
10:26because he's got, like,
10:28a library of faces that are cast
10:31that he can choose from
10:32and pull them down off the walls
10:34and repaint them.
10:35Because everything we do is edible,
10:37I have to sculpt it all from scratch
10:39shortly before it has to go out
10:41to the customers.
10:42That way it's still edible.
10:45Him being able to just pull a face down
10:47off the wall and set it up
10:48on an animatronic,
10:49big advantage time-wise.
10:52One, two, three,
10:53eight, eight, eight, eight, eight, eight, eight, eight.
10:55Coming up on Buddy vs. Christmas...
10:57What? Stop!
11:00The special skill set is storytelling.
11:03It's going to be really magical.
11:05One of our best cakes.
11:06Ow!
11:06Hi-yo!
11:08Santa's taking it
11:09Hoboken style, baby!
11:20Keep it going.
11:21Quick, quick, quick!
11:22Knock it out!
11:22Working with Lou is very fast-paced.
11:25Major Joe, you want to start the cake?
11:27Do I do the cake
11:28or should I start painting toys?
11:30No sooner am I done with one project
11:32or not even done,
11:34and he's got another one ready.
11:36The toy's a secondary little problem.
11:37But if we start the cake,
11:39it's got to dry.
11:41I decided to give Buddy
11:43a little run for his money
11:44by making a figure with a cake.
11:47We're going to use my face.
11:49What a beautiful face.
11:50With the cake, bravo!
11:52You have to put these lights
11:53right around here, too.
11:54Go right around the edge.
11:55Okay.
11:56It's got to look like a Buddy cake.
11:57You wouldn't want to eat this one, though.
11:58Ready for a competition.
11:59Okay, thanks, kiddo.
12:00All right.
12:01Rosie, my cake is baked.
12:03It's baked.
12:04Now I'm icing it.
12:05It's quicker than Buddy.
12:12There's not an exact science
12:13to mixing the buttercream color
12:15to make it exactly what you want.
12:16The sound that mixer makes
12:18sounds like suspense violins in a movie.
12:21You know, like if someone
12:22was walking down a scary hallway
12:23and the violin's like...
12:24I really want to make sure
12:28that we nail color all the time.
12:31I'm making a...
12:32like a Christmassy sagey green.
12:34And it took me a couple trial and errors.
12:38I was at this,
12:40but this is where I want to be.
12:42But the trick is,
12:44you have to aerate your buttercream
12:46to get it nice and smooth.
12:48I'm separating the stitches on the deer.
13:01This deer is probably one of the best pieces
13:03of plush on the market.
13:05We don't make the actual plush figure.
13:08I can't reinvent the wheel.
13:10A lot of this stuffing will go back in,
13:12but a lot of it won't
13:13because the linkage and the mechanism
13:15and the motors that make him move
13:17will go inside his body.
13:18So I take them apart
13:19and then I bring them to life.
13:22I have to cut them open.
13:24I have to empty out the insides
13:26so I have room to put the animation.
13:29My workshop will consist of
13:31elves building all the toys.
13:33And then, of course,
13:35would be a talking reindeer.
13:37These pieces are not meant to come apart.
13:39So what I'm doing is a trick.
13:44I have to take out any of the steel
13:46that's in there that's blocking my way
13:48and fill it with the animated linkage
13:50to make him move and talk.
13:53I got to cover the whole thing when I grind
13:55because it'll put the whole deer on fire.
13:58I found that the hard way.
14:00So I've taken the face off
14:02and I've put it in a support box,
14:04which is going to hold the deer in place
14:07and also put his antlers back on.
14:10The challenge in this cake
14:15is everything's got to work in sync and harmony.
14:18Um, right now, the way it looks built,
14:21it's a little wonky.
14:23Wait, that's not good?
14:24We have two separate conveyor belts
14:26to make the behind-the-scenes magic happen.
14:28But it's got to look like
14:30it's one continuous conveyor.
14:32These are just not lining up
14:34the way that I want them to.
14:35If you keep the angle,
14:36but this comes down, you know,
14:39a couple inches,
14:41either this comes higher,
14:42like, like you,
14:43it's probably easier to raise this.
14:46Watching an animatronics window, right,
14:48it works in unison.
14:49It makes sense.
14:50Ours has to do the same.
14:52If you raise this
14:53to seem like it dies here,
14:57then I don't mind it.
15:01It's 1 o'clock.
15:02Just so you guys know,
15:03we're not even going to finish this
15:04by 8 o'clock.
15:04You don't want to leave it?
15:05All right, you'll see.
15:06You're an angry elf.
15:07Why are you an angry elf for it?
15:09Because you've f***ing changed a wall.
15:10I'm sorry.
15:11No, he's not.
15:12I am very frustrated
15:13because every time somebody walks in,
15:15they change their mind.
15:16And, you know,
15:17it's screwing, unscrewing,
15:18cutting, uncutting,
15:19and, you know,
15:20it's measuring once
15:21and cutting three times.
15:22That doesn't work.
15:27Um, we have two separate conveyor belts
15:35to make the behind-the-scenes magic happen.
15:38But it's got to look like
15:39it's one continuous conveyor.
15:41Wait, that's not good?
15:43These are just not lining up
15:44the way that I want them to.
15:45If you raise this
15:47to seem like it dies here,
15:52then I don't mind it.
15:54We've got to raise the whole thing
15:55three and a half.
15:57If it doesn't come down straight
15:59and continue down the ramp,
16:01that's just like
16:02a little magic box,
16:03but it's got to be in line.
16:05You're saying magic
16:06can do anything other than...
16:09I don't know what North Pole
16:10you've been to
16:11or what elves
16:11you've been working with,
16:12but my elves are realistic.
16:16You don't have elves.
16:17The elves are my people.
16:18I'm going to go do my part.
16:20Just hurry up
16:20and get that done.
16:21Usually when I do this
16:28sort of thing
16:28with the elongated face,
16:29I make the eyes
16:30a little more oval
16:32because it accentuates
16:33the lengthening of the face.
16:36It's been a bit challenging
16:38because it's a full-body sculpture
16:39and it's quite large
16:41and it has a mechanical mechanism
16:43that was a huge pain.
16:45Hey, Ralph,
16:45do you want to grab a wire
16:46for a second here?
16:48Yeah.
16:49Good job.
16:52Is it going?
16:53It is not.
16:55How about now?
16:56No.
16:57There's too much chocolate down here.
17:00All right.
17:01You got to get that red chocolate
17:02out of there.
17:03All right.
17:06Hey, let it go for a second.
17:10Oh, look at that.
17:12She's swinging her wrench.
17:13That's how you use a wrench.
17:15You swing it back and forth.
17:16Very slowly.
17:18Do you think
17:19when the cake boss
17:20sees this cake,
17:21he'll hire me?
17:22I don't know.
17:23It looks quite delicious.
17:25My next step with this
17:26is getting
17:28a Christmas tree on top.
17:31Got to probably drill a hole in here
17:33and then drill a hole in here
17:34and put the wiring inside
17:38and there'll be a button,
17:39I guess,
17:39that will turn the lights on
17:42and make the trees rotate.
17:44Yes.
17:45I don't know if
17:46the cake boss can do that.
17:50I am going to be
17:51the magical mechanical component
17:53in this machine.
17:54Not my first rodeo
17:55on going inside of a cake.
17:57All right.
17:58Go in the box, Mo.
17:59Go in the box.
18:01Mo,
18:02behind the scenes,
18:03is the man behind the veil
18:05and he has to be able to pull one out,
18:08put one in,
18:09and kind of slide and chimmy
18:10and make this happen.
18:11Hit me in the face
18:12with this cake.
18:13in the back and then I put the new one in.
18:19And yee!
18:21You had a little bridge here
18:22so you could load up
18:25and pull back.
18:26Honestly,
18:26that bridge I think
18:27will get in my way
18:28because I got to be able
18:28to go over my shoulder
18:29to get rid of whatever I get.
18:30but if you bridge it,
18:32right,
18:33you have one sitting right here.
18:36Okay,
18:37before that one even goes down,
18:38you start one.
18:40If something happens
18:40and they're coming too fast,
18:42I have room on the floor
18:42to drop them
18:43if I don't have this in the way.
18:45Better know.
18:45You drop my cakes,
18:46I'm going to drop you.
18:47You're going to be buried
18:48in that box, dude.
18:50Dropping cakes.
18:51Place them.
18:52I have room to place them
18:54gently on the ground.
18:55Let me go finish doing the cakes.
18:57You guys finish doing this.
18:58That's fine.
18:59All right,
18:59now please,
19:00go make some cakes
19:01before you change your mind.
19:02Give me my cake back.
19:04You're not going to see it.
19:09It's too low.
19:16Mo,
19:17there's some girls for you.
19:18They're pointing to it.
19:21They're just about your size.
19:22They're doing their own little dance.
19:38I'm just trying to get
19:39this linkage lock connected
19:41so I can get them moving.
19:44Now,
19:44if these pivot points
19:45aren't perfectly parallel
19:46and lined up,
19:47they'll jam up
19:48and that's it.
19:48You're out,
19:48you're in,
19:49you're in trouble.
19:50The challenge
19:51of building
19:52a mechanical
19:53talking reindeer
19:54is that
19:55everything has to line up
19:57because of the linkage
19:58of the draw arms
20:00and the pivot points.
20:01And I'm doing it quickly.
20:02So I'm able to lift them
20:04up and down
20:05and then look left
20:06and right
20:06and then I'll be able
20:07to make his head turn.
20:08So he'll be really animated.
20:10So 90% of this
20:11is bolted together
20:12and locked.
20:13And when I lock it
20:14with the quarter inch hardware,
20:15it's not going to move.
20:16These are the control wires
20:17that run the motors.
20:18The color codes
20:19are very important
20:20because it'll just
20:20create a problem
20:21with the direction
20:22of the motor.
20:23The motor moves it
20:24back and forth
20:25and gives me
20:25the movement I want.
20:26Typically,
20:27I build an animation.
20:29I test it
20:30for at least a week.
20:32I don't want it to squeak.
20:33I don't want anything
20:34to loosen up.
20:36I don't want anything
20:36to break.
20:37A small screw
20:38loosened
20:39because I didn't tighten it
20:40can make the head fall off.
20:42And I connect it
20:43to the controller.
20:44It'll give me
20:45two movements at one time
20:46so I can get
20:47almost he's looking
20:48all over the place
20:48because he'll go
20:49left, right, up, down,
20:50left, right, up, down.
20:56I'm doing some
21:08different old-school
21:10piping techniques
21:11on the ornament,
21:12kind of just having
21:13fun with it
21:14and doing what I love.
21:16I'm just so excited
21:17to really showcase
21:19all the different elements
21:21that all of us
21:22are working on separately
21:23and then when they
21:24come together
21:25on one piece
21:26it's going to be
21:26really magical.
21:28I really think
21:29it's going to be
21:29one of our best cakes.
21:33Put it to the side.
21:35Whose mouth?
21:36He's the guy
21:37with the hat
21:37on the other side.
21:40Hey, Ralph.
21:42Oh, wow.
21:43They, uh,
21:44they really...
21:45Really taking me
21:46to task.
21:47I've seen the sicker
21:48burns from an
21:49Easy-Bake oven.
21:54Oh, hello.
21:56Yeah, my wit's
21:57as sharp as ever.
21:59Well, that's not
22:00very clever.
22:03Anybody we competed
22:04with throughout
22:05this whole competition,
22:06it's been, um,
22:08like a friendly rivalry.
22:11Well, that's the
22:12creativity we're
22:13going up against.
22:14Hello?
22:14Yeah, hello.
22:16These guys are talking
22:17a little too much
22:18smack.
22:19You know,
22:20when you poke the bear,
22:21sometimes you get
22:21swatted.
22:22and they've been
22:23poking the bear.
22:31This Elphamatic,
22:33it's like 13 foot tall,
22:3512 foot wide,
22:3710 foot long.
22:39We have to get
22:39through it.
22:40This back wall
22:41needs to be covered,
22:43um,
22:43so we just brick it.
22:45Gingerbread brick
22:45is a perfect solution.
22:46I think it looks good.
22:47I think it, you know,
22:48we have it
22:49and it's very Christmassy.
22:53These are gear motors
22:55set up in a way
22:56to kind of simulate
22:57reciprocating actuators.
22:59So this is going to go
23:00up and down
23:00or side to side
23:01however we orient it.
23:02We're going to use these
23:04so that you can see
23:04some kind of mechanicals
23:06of the machine going.
23:07I am wiring up
23:14the actuators right now.
23:16That's good.
23:17You ready?
23:18All right, Maurits,
23:19turn it on.
23:20Coming in hot.
23:23That's good.
23:23Okay.
23:25I'm going to run a wire now,
23:26pick up the power
23:27to the motors
23:27and then I'm going to run
23:29the wire to the servo
23:30and hook up the servo
23:31so the servo
23:31will make the mouth move.
23:33A servo is a little device
23:34activated through
23:35radio frequency.
23:37This will be behind his neck.
23:38This will connect
23:39to the back of his mouth
23:40and when this moves this way,
23:42his mouth will flip
23:43open and close
23:43and of course
23:44it will be activated
23:45through sound.
23:46I've got the talking deer
23:47pretty much together.
23:49It's mechanically moving.
23:51Now I have to get
23:52that deer talking.
23:53One, two, three,
23:55one, one.
23:58I do the voices
23:59on all this stuff,
24:00you know,
24:00when I talk,
24:00my figures.
24:02And if I lose it
24:04and I start laughing,
24:04I say something,
24:06I've got to smack myself.
24:07You always say terrible things
24:09because you're a nasty person.
24:10That's not nice.
24:12Now that I took
24:13all the stuffing,
24:14I can't put stuffing in
24:15because it all gets
24:16caught in the mechanism.
24:17So you have to grill it.
24:19I took out his appendix,
24:20his gallbladder,
24:21and his kidney
24:21and replaced it
24:22with a servo
24:23and a couple of DC motors.
24:25Now he feels better.
24:27In order to make it look
24:28like this elf
24:28is really on his phone,
24:30I found some of these
24:31little color-changing lights
24:32and I popped a few
24:34of them into his hands
24:35so you get a reflection
24:36of like the screen light
24:37on his shirt.
24:38I messed up
24:38because I made it
24:39like a chat screen
24:40instead of a video.
24:45This elf is kind of
24:46the slacker.
24:48I've intentionally made
24:48his elf hat look
24:49a little more
24:50like a dunce cap.
24:52That's visual storytelling.
24:57You ever see me
24:57do this technique,
24:59or often?
24:59No.
25:00What are you doing?
25:00It's like a
25:01buttercream stripping
25:02Now do you smooth it out
25:04or do you scrape it off?
25:05Do a little bit of both.
25:06So you're going to
25:06smooth it out first
25:07to get it all even,
25:09and then you dig in more
25:10and then you scrape off.
25:12The beauty of our cake
25:14is unfinished cakes
25:16will go into the machine
25:17called Elph-O-Matic,
25:19and then boom,
25:20they're going to come out
25:21magically decorated.
25:23Give me a flat brush
25:24because I want to paint
25:25the flower tips
25:26a little bit.
25:30How do you like
25:31my little zebra flower
25:32there, Ralph?
25:33That's cute.
25:34So I've got
25:35the rest of the figures
25:36that are going to be
25:37on the set,
25:38and all I'm doing now
25:39is just finalizing them
25:40ready to go
25:40into the costume shop.
25:41I think the most
25:42important elements
25:43in this design
25:44is good movement.
25:46The drill press
25:46has to work.
25:48The figure cutting
25:48the wood
25:49has to look like
25:50he's really soaring it.
25:51Tightening everything,
25:52I've got a few pieces
25:53to weld,
25:54and I'm almost done
25:55with the figures.
25:56Rosie will take it
25:57from there.
25:58She's down to the last
25:59set of clothes
26:00that she's putting together.
26:02It's going to be tight,
26:03but we're going to do it.
26:05We're troopers.
26:06We're experienced at this.
26:07When the tough
26:08gets going,
26:08the go and get tough.
26:11Get him out of here
26:11so he can get some clothes.
26:12He's got a cold butt.
26:13Okay.
26:18All right.
26:18I'm starting to finish him.
26:19I got just a little bit
26:20of odds and ends
26:21on these guys.
26:21Great.
26:22So who's this now?
26:23He's one of the carpets.
26:24He's cutting.
26:26Okay.
26:26Okay, whichever face
26:27you think looks the best
26:28on him based on what
26:29he's doing.
26:29Now he's struggling
26:30with that sauce,
26:31so give him a busy face,
26:32all right?
26:33You get the clothes on,
26:34do what you have to do,
26:35and I'll take it from there.
26:35Okay.
26:37Time to dress the boys.
26:40Okay.
26:40My assignment is to dress
26:43four elves and the baker.
26:45Okay, Rosie,
26:46here's another one.
26:47Okay.
26:48And make sure
26:50they all have their hair done
26:52and their hats on
26:54and that they fit
26:55all the animatronics correctly.
26:57I'm in this short amount of time.
27:00It's making me sweat.
27:01That's for sure.
27:03I love a nice,
27:04good-fitting flannel
27:05on a man.
27:07Hello, buddy.
27:12Hey.
27:13Paisad.
27:14How we doing, Lou?
27:15I'm good.
27:15How are you doing?
27:16You look like you got
27:17a lot of work, Lou.
27:18I've been working.
27:19I love my work like you do.
27:21I can't wait to see
27:22your finished display.
27:23The problem is
27:24I can't eat it.
27:25You could eat mine
27:26if you want.
27:27You could eat it.
27:28No problem.
27:29I can't wait to see you guys
27:30at the end of the competition,
27:32but the end of this,
27:34we usually turn the cameras around,
27:35so we'll see you later, Lou.
27:37Bye, guys.
27:40Goodbye.
27:48It's a little bit
27:49of a crunch right now.
27:50I'm happy to paint toys
27:52that will stand out
27:53and will look like
27:55they're ready
27:55for children to play with.
27:57I've got to make glue.
27:59I think I'm going to glue
28:00this right on
28:00and then trim it.
28:02Now, his mustache
28:02is pretty gray.
28:04Nice and long.
28:06Look at his mustache.
28:07Oh, my God.
28:09Let me get a dog.
28:12You've got to file it.
28:14You've got to cut it.
28:14I'll give you a big file
28:15and it'll file around it.
28:16Steve has to get
28:17the figures placed
28:18on the set.
28:19They have to cut
28:20the figures in
28:21and make sure
28:22they fit properly.
28:23Oh, please, please.
28:25Ha-ha.
28:25Ha-ha.
28:26All right.
28:27Ha-ha-ha.
28:28Okay.
28:29Nice and easy.
28:30Watch your fingers.
28:31Turn them around a little bit.
28:31There you go.
28:32See how nice
28:33the light brings up
28:34his face and all?
28:34Lights over here.
28:35Christmas trees over here.
28:37It's going to look pretty.
28:38Really pretty.
28:39All finished sparkly.
28:43We haven't once
28:44tried out this fog machine.
28:46Time's almost running out.
28:47We've still got a lot
28:48of things that got to get done.
28:49I'm in go mode.
28:50We're tiling the front
28:52of the facade
28:53with white modeling chocolate
28:55because I'm going to
28:56overpipe on it
28:57and do some, like,
28:58green garlands
28:58and hang the stockings.
29:02I know this is looking good,
29:04but we still have
29:04a ton of work
29:06to get done.
29:07We've got to
29:07go on all the cogs,
29:08make sure all the mechanics
29:09working,
29:10put the elves in place.
29:12You know,
29:12a lot of things
29:13got to still happen.
29:14And, you know,
29:15we're just trying
29:15to get done.
29:18Time's up.
29:19That's it.
29:20We can't do anymore.
29:21We're going to have
29:21two hours over there
29:22to finish the last
29:23odds and ends.
29:24So today,
29:29we're delivering
29:29to the art factory
29:30in Patterson, New Jersey.
29:33Straighten out.
29:33Straighten out.
29:35Okay!
29:39Good?
29:39Yeah, you're good.
29:40You're good.
29:42Toast.
29:43No problem.
29:44We're starting to unload,
29:45but everybody's
29:46already getting nervous.
29:47We're not taking it
29:48off the truck.
29:48We're ripping it
29:49off the truck.
29:50All right,
29:50I'm going to take this.
29:51Ow!
29:53Splinter?
29:53No, no.
29:55There are three nails.
29:58Look, it just
29:59went here, here, and here.
30:01All I'm going to do
30:02is I'm just going
30:03to clean it off.
30:03All right.
30:04We have to unload, though.
30:06This is...
30:07My father almost
30:08going to kill me.
30:09Well, you know,
30:10is he going to kill you?
30:11Yes, yes.
30:12The answer is yes.
30:13All right.
30:14All right, that'll be it.
30:16Watch the faces.
30:16Watch the figures.
30:17Yes, yes.
30:17Okay.
30:18Everything in here
30:19is going to move.
30:20This is a freight elevator.
30:21Third floor.
30:22All right, everybody watch,
30:23because everything's
30:24going to move.
30:25Don't touch the wall.
30:26I'm telling you.
30:27Watch that!
30:31Everything in here
30:36is going to move.
30:36This is a freight elevator.
30:38All right, everybody watch
30:39because everything's
30:39going to move.
30:40Don't touch the wall
30:41like I'm telling you.
30:42Watch that!
30:43Oh, no!
30:45No, it's the back
30:46on the bottom.
30:47It's jammed in there.
30:49Wait, let me move those.
30:50I have this,
30:51so you guys get that.
30:52Everybody needs
30:53to take a couple
30:53of deep breaths.
30:54Posey, watch your back.
30:56Nice and stuff.
30:58A little bit more.
30:59A little more.
31:00A little more.
31:02All right.
31:03The dolly got stuck
31:05between the elevator
31:06and the floor.
31:07That could have been a foot.
31:08Everybody has to get calm
31:09because it was very scary
31:11what happened.
31:13One, two, three.
31:13No, no, no.
31:17This is a beautiful facility,
31:19but it's an old building,
31:21so it's a little tight.
31:23Be careful with that pipe
31:23above your head.
31:24You're going that way.
31:25Watch that head.
31:26Watch that pipe.
31:27Behind you.
31:27Hold on, hold on, hold on.
31:28I got to get stuck.
31:29Hold on.
31:30You got to go to Buddy.
31:31I mean, every hallway,
31:32every turn.
31:33Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
31:34Okay, we're dodging.
31:35We're ducking.
31:36This is not an easy delivery.
31:38Are we on a wooden bridge
31:39four floors up
31:40above the loading dock?
31:40Don't think about it.
31:41Oh, we are.
31:42Thank God we built this
31:43in three pieces
31:44because everything is sliding by
31:46by the hair of my
31:47chinny-chin-chin.
31:48Push move.
31:54Wait, can we drive through?
31:55Holy cow.
31:57How are we doing, guys?
31:58Oh, it's the funny guys.
32:00Hey, it's the funny guys.
32:03They already know you.
32:05Real careful with my baby.
32:06Yes, yes, I was.
32:07Let's zip it in.
32:10All right.
32:11I'm in.
32:11We got the cake in.
32:12We got two hours to go.
32:14We need to assemble it all together.
32:16I need to pipe the garland.
32:17We need to hang the stockings.
32:19We need to finish putting all the cakes
32:22on a conveyor belt.
32:23There's a lot of work that's got to get done.
32:24Okay.
32:25Okay.
32:30Okay, now, Steve, turn her a little from her chair.
32:34A little more.
32:34Good.
32:35That's fine.
32:35We're getting everything together.
32:37Just before we finish,
32:38the reindeer's head goes to the side.
32:43The head went to the side,
32:45and so did my heart.
32:46You got to cut it open.
32:50It gets further back.
32:53The sets grew loosened up.
32:55The trick is to find exactly which one it was.
32:57The simple little collar came off a pivot point
33:01that dropped the linkage that held his head straight.
33:04If you let me get my hand in there,
33:07I can see it as you're doing it.
33:09Here, I got it.
33:11I go, hey, is this it?
33:13Pop, pop, pop, I got it.
33:14Okay.
33:16This little collar
33:17tightens
33:19the arm
33:21that allows it to come back and forth.
33:23This collar popped off.
33:25I found the collar
33:26underneath on the,
33:28basically the belly of the deer.
33:30Give me a brush.
33:32That's good.
33:33Okay.
33:33Bingo, I'm sorry.
33:34What happened?
33:35It took years off my life.
33:38At that moment,
33:39that was the last thing I needed to see.
33:41Okay, ready?
33:42We're going to turn it.
33:43Ooh, punch the pipes.
33:45Moment of truth.
33:45We got to test the alphamatic.
33:48We put everything in place.
33:50We try to turn on the smoke machine.
33:53That's not working.
33:54It's the weirdest thing.
33:55Is the frog machine plugged in?
33:57We need the smoke machine to work
33:58because it's one element Lou ain't got.
34:01Come around back.
34:03You got it.
34:03We do a little more magic there.
34:06I put it right on.
34:08Oh, we got smoke.
34:09And boom.
34:10We got smoke.
34:11There's the smoker.
34:12Hi-yo.
34:13Time's up.
34:14We're done.
34:14Okay, everybody in position.
34:17One, two, three.
34:27Christmas just came early, baby.
34:29There's a really good chance
34:31that this is going to turn out just fine.
34:33And Lou Nasty,
34:34you are in trouble, my friend.
34:35Jason Chaffield and Courtney Quinn
34:41aren't going to be the perfect judges
34:43for this competition.
34:44Courtney Quinn is a color expert.
34:46If there's one thing you can't be for Courtney,
34:48he's bland.
34:49But I ain't a bland guy,
34:51so I ain't worried.
34:52Jason Chaffield is a cartoonist
34:54and a comedian based in New York City.
34:56Jason's work has been published everywhere,
34:58from the New Yorker to Mad Magazine.
35:03Team Buddy.
35:05Team Lou.
35:05The theme of this challenge
35:07was Santa's workshop.
35:08And we're really excited
35:09to see the finished work.
35:11Lou.
35:15All right, Lou.
35:20Let's see your creation.
35:22Well, I think I've accomplished a lot.
35:24Let's take a look at what I've done.
35:28Oh, my God.
35:32My elves are busy working
35:33to complete the toys.
35:34Bravo.
35:35Nice work, guys.
35:37And then my talking reindeer.
35:40There's so much going on.
35:41I know.
35:41I feel like I have to look at it inch by inch
35:43because there's so much packed in there.
35:45Yeah, I mean, we asked for a story,
35:47but this is a book.
35:49Hello, Bingo.
35:50Hey, Lou and Team Nasty.
35:52Bingo's my name and flying's my game.
35:55I fly the elves back and forth every day
35:58from their homes to the workshop and back again,
36:00sort of like the North Pole taxi service.
36:02You like the job?
36:03I sometimes get paid in gumdrops
36:05or cake from Buddy and his elves.
36:09Who says the gig economy's dead?
36:11Wow.
36:13I got to say, Lou,
36:14just looking at what you created,
36:15I could tell how much you love Christmas.
36:18I could tell how much you're in the business
36:20of making people happy.
36:21I got to tip my hat and say bravo.
36:24Thank you very much.
36:26All right, Team Buddy,
36:27show us what you made.
36:28You got it.
36:32This year,
36:33Santa's kicking it Hoboken style, baby.
36:37Oh, wow.
36:37Oh, wow.
36:44This year,
36:46Santa's kicking it Hoboken style, baby.
36:48Oh, my God.
36:50Oh, my God.
36:50Oh, my God.
36:51Wow.
36:51Wow.
36:54Going against Lou and his team,
36:56we wanted to have a lot of movement.
36:58Oh, my God.
36:59Oh, my God.
37:00Gears and gizmos and smoke and lights.
37:02You're not done yourself.
37:02The Elphamatic 4000.
37:04Elphamatic 4000.
37:06Is this patented?
37:07Patented,
37:07made in Hoboken.
37:09Wow.
37:09So did you build us a cake that makes cake?
37:12That's exactly according to what we did.
37:15We made you a cake that makes cakes.
37:16Wow.
37:17That's the best kind of cake.
37:19I'd really like to have a piece of any one of those cakes.
37:24I think you did a great job.
37:26Great work, team buddy.
37:27Okay, now comes the fun part.
37:29We get to take a closer look at what you made.
37:31Good job.
37:31Nice work, you guys.
37:32Really.
37:33Oh, thank you.
37:34Fantastic.
37:36I got to say,
37:37I really love Bingo.
37:39He's amazing.
37:40Hey, Bingo,
37:40you got a compliment.
37:42Why, thank you, buddy.
37:44I wish I could say the same,
37:45but this competition should be a piece of cake.
37:50Be nice.
37:51We're on television.
37:52Yeah, yeah.
37:53You got to be nice, Bingo.
37:54Sometimes he curses.
37:55That's all right.
37:59I love this.
38:00This is very cartoony.
38:01Yeah.
38:01So it really speaks to me.
38:02Absolutely.
38:03I love the big animated looking eyes.
38:06Yeah.
38:06The very expressive faces.
38:07They're so stinking cute.
38:09I love this one at the front here.
38:10He's kind of fixing things.
38:12But kind of lazily,
38:13which I relate to.
38:14He's like,
38:15I'm going to fix this,
38:16but I'm going to lay down when I do it.
38:17Yeah, he's really got my Sunday morning energy.
38:19Yeah.
38:20The story is very much Buddy's story.
38:22Yeah.
38:23I mean, it's a cake making factory.
38:25It's Carlo's bake shop.
38:26I know.
38:27That Buddy decided to take that story of Christmas
38:29and bring it to his own personal story
38:32is really special.
38:33Well, I think Lou has got some very difficult competition here.
38:37He's really knocked it out of the park.
38:39It's going to be hard to beat for sure.
38:40Let's take a look at what Lou made.
38:42All right, let's go.
38:46There's so much going on here.
38:47This one also has a nice little story,
38:50the elves in the workshop.
38:51I like the irony that he had to get his little elves
38:53to work to make this workshop of little elves.
38:56Yes.
38:57It's very meta.
38:58Elves on elves.
38:58It's very meta.
38:58There's a lot of meta going on in both of these.
39:00A cake on cake, cake maker.
39:02Yes.
39:03And elves making an elf workshop.
39:05Well, I do love that there are so many hidden details.
39:08Like, the longer I look at this,
39:10the more I can explore and enjoy with the work.
39:12Yeah, it feels like a puzzle.
39:13It does feel like a puzzle or kind of like a game of I Spy.
39:17I like the drill.
39:18I like the hand pulling the drill down.
39:19And the little puppy.
39:21I think as you continue to look,
39:22you can kind of unravel more of the story.
39:25But I do think you have to stare at it for quite a bit
39:27to unravel all the really clear details.
39:30In reference to color,
39:32I understand why it's quite a bit beige,
39:34but I personally would have loved to see just a little bit more color.
39:37I really like this little animatronic figure.
39:41You know what the cherry on top is for me?
39:43Is the mustache.
39:46Yes.
39:46I mean, that is Lou's signature.
39:47Yeah.
39:48And I love that it's on this little character here out front.
39:52Team Buddy.
39:53Team Lou.
39:54The challenge was to create something that told the story of Santa's workshop.
39:59Buddy, I love that you had the smoke coming out.
40:03You had the music here.
40:04You had the whole scene come together.
40:05There were a few details that I thought could have been just a little bit cleaner.
40:11Lou, you created something so magical that really feels like Christmas.
40:15But I feel like there was just so much going on that I didn't know where to look.
40:19And I wanted it to kind of flow a bit easier.
40:24You've both done an incredible job, and you've given us a really difficult job.
40:28But we do have to choose a winner.
40:31When I see Buddy's display, okay, it's nice.
40:35But I don't think it compares to mine.
40:37It doesn't have the sophistication.
40:39But I'm not working with chocolate and icing and cookies.
40:42I'm working with steel.
40:43There's an edge on my side.
40:45But you never know.
40:46I mean, listen, looking at both pieces, it's anybody's game.
40:50You know?
40:51And listen, if you're going to lose to a guy that does Christmas for a living, it's okay.
40:56The team that conquered Christmas is...
41:03Team Buddy!
41:04Yay!
41:07Congratulations, Buddy.
41:09Your prize of $5,000 will be donated to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
41:15When we knew that we were going against Lou, we had to elevate our game.
41:19You're a master of what you do, so thank you.
41:22I don't think anybody lost here.
41:24We had a wonderful experience.
41:26We met wonderful people.
41:28We got to share our talent.
41:30And we enjoyed every minute of it.
41:32Buddy, you're a true artist.
41:34It was great competing against you.
41:36Merry Christmas.
41:37Lou!
41:39Woo!
41:39Good job, my brother.
41:40Great job.
41:42Excellent.
41:43You did an awesome job.
41:45It was such a pleasure.
41:46It was great.
41:46It was great.
