00:00And for Christmas, he's going one step further by putting his lifelike cakes up against the real things.
00:07Taking on teams who are masters at bringing Christmas to life.
00:11Going head-to-head against Broadway set designers,
00:15glass blowers,
00:19animatronics experts,
00:21and toy brick builders.
00:25But they'll use whatever materials they choose,
00:28while Buddy must use cake.
00:31It's bakers versus makers, as both teams have just 24 hours.
00:36When it's Christmas Eve, you've got to deliver.
00:38To see who can make the most incredible holiday displays,
00:41win $5,000 for a charity of their choosing,
00:45and claim the ultimate ragging rights as...
00:47They're going down.
00:49The team who conquered Christmas.
00:51Christmas!
00:52This is Buddy versus Christmas.
00:55Merry Christmas!
00:58All right, guys.
01:04This week, the theme is toys.
01:06Okay.
01:06And the special skill set is originality.
01:10Originality.
01:11Original.
01:11Original.
01:12Like me.
01:13Aren't you the second Buddy?
01:14That's your dad.
01:15Yeah, my dad was the OG.
01:17I'm the third.
01:17You're the second.
01:18All right.
01:19So we're looking outside of you guys for originality.
01:22That's what we're going to say.
01:23So our judges this week are Courtney Quinn and Jason Chatfield.
01:27Jason Chatfield is a cartoonist.
01:30And Courtney Quinn is a color expert.
01:32They're both incredible artists,
01:33and they're going to be the perfect judges for this competition.
01:36Our competitors are Corey and Travis,
01:38and they're Lego artists.
01:40These guys make sculptures and buildings and all kinds of stuff out of Lego bricks.
01:45They've turned their childhood hobby into their life's work.
01:49They turn toys into magic.
01:51The cool thing about what they're doing is their medium is a toy.
01:56We have to go as hard as we can, otherwise we're going to lose this.
02:00I think the one advantage we've obviously got is we can go faster.
02:04Their stuff is magnificent, but it's tedious and small.
02:08And we put more, like, movement in it.
02:11Their stuff is more static than ours.
02:13Right, son.
02:14They have no movement.
02:15I'm very handsome.
02:17I don't know if that helps us.
02:18Yeah, very nice.
02:19I like it.
02:20So this week, my team is Ralph.
02:23Ralph is an amazing sculptor.
02:26Becky, she's an amazing cake artist, sculptor, everything.
02:30Moe is really good in mechanics and engineering and building.
02:35And my son, Buddy, did so well on the gingerbread challenge,
02:38I decided to bring him back for another one.
02:40Why don't we get the whiteboard in,
02:42and let's figure out what we're going to make here.
02:44What about one big, what kind of toys are there
02:47that we can scale up and it'll be really awesome?
02:49What about, like, a giant jack-in-a-box?
02:52What about, like, a big Christmas teddy bear?
02:56Big, big, though, like eight feet tall.
02:58Teddy bears, when I hear that big,
03:00almost seem a little creepy to me.
03:02Oh, but a jack-in-the-box won't.
03:04How about Santa's sleigh with toys hanging out the back?
03:07Okay, how about this?
03:08What if you do, like, a hybrid kind of thing?
03:09Like, it's kind of like a sleigh race car.
03:12Like a half-and-half.
03:13It's a sleigh in the back, but it's the car in the front,
03:16and then you have the big bag of toys,
03:18and you do all the toys coming out of it,
03:20and you can get your jack-in-the-box.
03:22I like this idea.
03:23What do you guys think?
03:24I like it.
03:24It's not just, like, one toy.
03:27Yeah, that's exactly it.
03:28And it's a toy with toys.
03:30Our design is going to be a rocket-powered sleigh
03:33that delivers toys to all the good boys and girls
03:36during Christmas.
03:37The back of my sleigh is going to have
03:40a bag made out of cake,
03:42overflowing with toys.
03:44And, of course, we're going to dress my son Buddy Jr.
03:47as Buddy the Elf driver.
03:49Well, you work on the little toys,
03:50and us three will start constructing the frame.
03:54For the cake, sure.
03:55We're going to beat these brick builders or what?
03:57Let's hit it.
03:57All right, let's go.
03:59Let's do this.
04:00Fellas, our challenge is to make
04:03the ultimate Christmas tour.
04:05My name is Corey Samuels.
04:07And I'm Travis Samuels.
04:08And we're the Braco Bros.
04:12On our team, we have the best brick builders
04:14in all the land.
04:16Number one, we have Mel.
04:17Mel is our time check guy
04:19and our accountability guy.
04:21Manny is the one with the big ambition
04:23and the big ideas.
04:24Jermaine, that's our mathematician.
04:26He's counting the bricks.
04:28We're unstoppable.
04:28Nailed it.
04:30Christmas is for the kids, right?
04:32Yes.
04:32And kids love toys.
04:34Yes.
04:34So we got to build the ultimate toy
04:36that no one has ever seen before.
04:38Woo!
04:39When I was six years old,
04:40I was diagnosed with acute leukemia.
04:42And it was hard,
04:44but I was given a lot of these bricks
04:45from the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
04:47Building literally became my playground.
04:49And we did a lot of that time together.
04:51I had to figure out a way
04:52that I could still be there for him.
04:54We would spend hours
04:55just playing on the floor with Lego bricks.
04:57It really helped
04:58during that rough time in our lives.
05:0025 years later,
05:01we're here still playing with bricks.
05:03What's the type of toy
05:04you see under the tree
05:05that you're going to run straight to?
05:06One of my favorite ones
05:07was like these robots
05:09that would like transform into stuff.
05:11You know what I mean?
05:11I dig it.
05:12I dig it.
05:12Robots?
05:13All right.
05:13Okay.
05:13Yeah.
05:14We can make something like big, right?
05:16Yeah.
05:16Something like ultra.
05:18Follow me.
05:19Okay.
05:20Action.
05:20Okay.
05:21Hero.
05:22Ultra.
05:24Bot.
05:25Yeah, I like that.
05:26I like that.
05:27How tall is this thing going to be?
05:28We got to go ultra big.
05:30Four?
05:30Now you're getting warmer.
05:32You know what?
05:33Let's go for six.
05:34We got a tall order ahead of us.
05:35And we're used to build this stuff
05:37that takes a week,
05:38even a month.
05:38We got 24 hours
05:40to make this a reality.
05:42So I'm thinking about creating
05:44a different type of bot
05:45that no one has ever seen,
05:46giving it a superhero ultra stance,
05:49building something in the center
05:50that any kid will be attracted to nowadays.
05:53Everybody loves tablets,
05:54so why not build a tablet
05:55inside of our Ultra Bot?
05:57We also have lights
05:58coming out of the hands
06:00and the head
06:00just to give it that
06:01ultra appearance.
06:04Our Ultra Bot
06:05is going to be presented
06:06at the Make-A-Wish Foundation,
06:08so a lot of kids
06:09are going to see it.
06:10To be able to give something
06:11back to them
06:12is just a dream come true.
06:14Let's bring it in.
06:15Bring it in.
06:15Bring it in.
06:16Big Angie.
06:16Big Angie.
06:16Woo!
06:17Team Boss Bashers
06:19on three.
06:20One, two, three.
06:22Team Boss Bashers!
06:24Hi, guys.
06:26Yeah, you see us?
06:27Yeah.
06:27I see all of y'all.
06:30I see you guys.
06:31You look good.
06:32I am so excited
06:34that you guys decided
06:35to partake
06:36in Buddy vs. Christmas.
06:38Oh, my gosh.
06:39You guys could just
06:39throw in the towel right now.
06:40Ooh!
06:41Think of us as the Avengers
06:42of Lego building, all right?
06:44Ooh!
06:46Okay.
06:47May the best team win.
06:49Virtual handshake.
06:50That's it.
06:51All right.
06:52We'll see you guys soon.
06:55Mobility.
06:56All right?
06:57That's going to be
06:58our secret weapon.
07:00Not only is ours a cake,
07:03but it also drives...
07:05There, peace ain't driving.
07:10That, I can guarantee you.
07:11No, it is.
07:13Start building the toys.
07:15We'll be back,
07:16and we'll go from there.
07:17We haven't crashed a cake yet.
07:19So I got Ralph and Becky
07:20sculpting the toys
07:21while me, Mo, and my son
07:23are building the wooden frame
07:25that's going to turn this
07:26into the Buddy the Elf mobile.
07:28We can't have a real
07:31rocket booster on the back,
07:33so we're going to have
07:33some fun with it,
07:34make it a little cartoony.
07:35It's going to look really cool,
07:36like it's actually, you know,
07:37trying to fly away.
07:38You need to make the platform
07:39where the cake will go,
07:41and then the rocket booster
07:42for the back.
07:44Yippee!
07:45Pretty good.
07:46If it works,
07:46it'll be pretty cool.
07:47I'm going to cut that hole out
07:48for the garbage can.
07:50What are you trying to do?
07:52We're going to cut this can in half,
07:53and this is going to be
07:54a rocket booster.
07:55It's going to kind of be
07:57like a big remote-control car.
08:00It's a toy that delivers toys.
08:02Good.
08:03It's actually pretty good.
08:05Right now,
08:05I'm making a jack-in-the-box.
08:07I've built up the box
08:08out of cereal treats.
08:09I'm covering it
08:10with modeling chocolate,
08:11and then we're going to make
08:12an internal support
08:13for the, I don't know,
08:15the body of the jack.
08:17Can you imagine how bleak
08:19the past must have been
08:21that, like, a jack-in-the-box
08:22was an actually fun toy?
08:23I don't think it was ever fun.
08:25Right?
08:25Clowns you know
08:26are coming are bad enough.
08:28Guess what, kids?
08:30I'm here!
08:31Like, no, no, no, no, no,
08:32no, go back in the box.
08:37That's terrifying.
08:39All right, come on, come on,
08:40come on, come on, come on,
08:40come on.
08:41We got to get these feet done, man.
08:42We got to get these feet done.
08:44We're going to start
08:44from the ground up.
08:46What we got here
08:47is the frame of our foot.
08:50So the bot has to have
08:51a big foot
08:51because it's going to be
08:52a big character.
08:53So what we're doing right now,
08:55we're stabilizing the inside
08:56by making a foundation.
08:57We got to make sure
08:58that everything
08:58that we're building here
08:59is equal and is even
09:01because all the weight
09:03of this bot
09:03is going to be pressed down
09:05on this foundation.
09:06If this foundation
09:07is off by just one stud
09:09or a little bit,
09:10then it's going to
09:10mess everything up.
09:11You feel me?
09:11Yes.
09:12A stud is the circular pattern
09:14that's on a brick
09:15and if the stud count
09:16is off,
09:17then game over for us.
09:19Literally one stud
09:20can spell defeat
09:21for your actual build.
09:22Once we build it up,
09:23we can work on the aesthetics
09:24on the outside.
09:25We got some snaps.
09:25Red goes all the way
09:26up to the knees
09:26and then we blend in the gray.
09:28All of this should be red,
09:30this whole top level right here.
09:31So this top part
09:32should be all red.
09:33This is what we're cutting off.
09:35That's what I was going for.
09:36I mean,
09:36unless we think things go up one.
09:38Nah.
09:39All right, hold on, hold on.
09:39Wait, wait, wait.
09:40Pause, pause, pause, pause, pause.
09:41Excuse me, excuse me.
09:42What are you looking for?
09:44Two by four reds.
09:45Two by four reds?
09:46Start looking.
09:47You got to have more.
09:48Everything we got is out here.
09:50If you don't have
09:50any more red bricks,
09:52this whole thing
09:52comes to a screeching halt.
09:54Mel discovered that
09:55we don't have
09:56the amount of red bricks
09:57that we need
09:57to even build the feet.
09:59So now,
09:59we have to go back
10:00to the drawing board.
10:01We're going to need red for
10:02calves.
10:04For the calves.
10:05We're going to need red
10:05for the arms.
10:08That, all we have done
10:09is the feet.
10:09Yeah.
10:10So what's the game plan?
10:20If you don't have
10:21any more red bricks,
10:22this whole thing
10:23comes to a screeching halt.
10:25Mel discovered that
10:26we don't have
10:27the amount of red bricks
10:27that we need
10:28to even build the feet.
10:29So now,
10:30we have to go back
10:31to the drawing board.
10:32We're going to need
10:32red for
10:33calves.
10:35For the calves.
10:35Right.
10:36We're going to need red
10:36for the arms.
10:38Right.
10:39All we have done
10:39is the feet.
10:40Yeah.
10:40We got to change directions.
10:42We have over
10:43100,000 bricks
10:44that are in our room.
10:45However,
10:46you can underestimate
10:47the amount of bricks
10:48that you use
10:49in order to build
10:49certain pieces.
10:51Like,
10:51we ate up a majority
10:52of the red
10:52on just feet.
10:53On paper,
10:54it looks like a lot,
10:55but once you
10:55start building,
10:57it's not a lot.
10:58All right,
10:58so we're going to have
10:59to cut this thing in half.
11:01From a six-foot robot
11:02to a two-,
11:02three-foot robot,
11:04you know,
11:04he's going to sit there
11:05and put our robot
11:05on top of his cake
11:06as an ornament.
11:07That's what I don't want.
11:08So what's the game plan?
11:09It's tough
11:10because we're pretty much
11:11done with the size
11:12and shape,
11:12and now we have
11:13to start over
11:14from scratch?
11:15My hands are already
11:16hurting.
11:17Yes.
11:18We're going to literally
11:18take that,
11:19cut it in half,
11:20supports and everything,
11:21and then round it out
11:22so that way it's like,
11:24you know,
11:24red on all sides
11:25and stuff,
11:25and then we can
11:26immediately just get
11:27started on the legs.
11:28One thing is just
11:29making sure that we
11:29don't run out
11:30of bricks again.
11:31We're using the blue
11:32for the legs,
11:33and then at the waist
11:34area, you go into
11:35a gray.
11:36I see blue,
11:37but I mean,
11:37I just don't know
11:37if we have a lot.
11:39Once we know
11:39how much we have,
11:40that determines
11:41how tall we could
11:41actually make this thing.
11:43Yo, yo, yo,
11:44we got blue, bro.
11:45You need some blue,
11:45my man.
11:46Here you go, man.
11:47Look, blue.
11:48All I'm saying
11:49is if we could build
11:50while we talk,
11:50that'd be great.
11:51All right,
11:52come on, come on,
11:52come on, come on.
11:53Nah, man,
11:54we need to know
11:54the height, bro.
11:55Come on, chill.
11:55Yeah, we need to know
11:56the height.
11:57The crotch begins here?
11:58I think so.
11:59This change affects
12:00the design by the height.
12:02At first,
12:03we wanted six feet.
12:04Now we're looking
12:05at maybe four
12:05or five feet.
12:07We'll be finishing
12:08our next foot,
12:09so I think we're
12:10in a good spot
12:11right now.
12:12You're such a
12:12Captain America, man.
12:13Am I really?
12:14Positive.
12:14Yeah, you're so
12:15positive and everything.
12:17I appreciate that.
12:18With my shield, though.
12:20That's the case
12:20where my shield at.
12:21I think there are
12:22different advantages
12:23to sculpting
12:24and modeling chocolate.
12:25Building with those
12:26little bricks like that,
12:27that was such a
12:27different discipline
12:28than this.
12:29Like, when you're
12:30working in chocolate,
12:30you have to have
12:31a rigid structure
12:32inside of what you're
12:33doing, but I feel
12:34like I can work
12:34really quickly
12:36with modeling chocolate.
12:37Should I cover
12:38his little snout?
12:39Snoop?
12:40This color?
12:40If you want to,
12:41go ahead.
12:41I don't really want to.
12:42I think it looks
12:43super cool like this.
12:44It looks fine.
12:44Then just leave it
12:44like that.
12:45It looks fine.
12:46Why do you make,
12:47like, the scariest
12:48dolls?
12:49This one's supposed
12:50to be you.
12:51This is for children.
12:51It's not supposed
12:52to terrorize them.
12:53It looks just like you.
12:55If you think it's scary,
12:57then you're afraid
12:58of yourself.
13:00That's not Becky's
13:00hair color.
13:01Oh, so now it is Becky.
13:03Can you keep it
13:04like that, please?
13:05Why does she look
13:06like a nun?
13:09I'm trying to work
13:10quickly.
13:12I feel like I do
13:12have, like, a
13:13nun-vibed.
13:14Yeah, a little
13:15nun doll,
13:16French bear,
13:18creepy caterpillar man
13:20in the box.
13:22Yo, we're six
13:23and a half hours in,
13:256.5.
13:26And look how much
13:27we got done so far, man.
13:28So, the feet are done.
13:30Now it's time
13:30to do the leg.
13:32So, Jermaine came up
13:33with a mold
13:34of one part
13:35of our leg.
13:36So, now we have
13:37to start cranking out
13:38molds in order
13:39to stack them
13:39in a way
13:40that we create
13:41the shape of the legs.
13:42There's no instructions
13:43for this toy.
13:44This part of the leg
13:45is straight
13:46all the way down.
13:47So, that's a straight
13:48angle.
13:48Yeah.
13:49In this part of the leg,
13:50the right leg,
13:51is one stud
13:53tilted back.
13:55We now have to think
13:56about what technique
13:56we're going to use
13:57in order to make
13:58our legs bend.
14:00They're going to
14:00have to come in.
14:01Can we bring it in
14:02one stud in?
14:03Yeah, like,
14:03at the kneecap,
14:05it'll come in
14:06one stud,
14:06so that way
14:07it'll separate
14:07the thigh from the...
14:08That's all I wanted
14:10to know.
14:11Building with bricks
14:11is like chess.
14:13You're thinking
14:13about three moves
14:14ahead of your opponent
14:15or what you're
14:16going to do.
14:17In order to make
14:18something round,
14:19you have to use
14:20certain pieces,
14:20certain size pieces.
14:22So, you're starting
14:23something that looks
14:24like a block,
14:24but when you look
14:25at your third step,
14:26it's going to look
14:27like a ball.
14:28So, the filler
14:28that we have here
14:29is what is going
14:31to be inside
14:32of this hollow leg
14:33of this ultra bot.
14:35So, we're going
14:35to be running
14:36through bricks
14:36very quickly.
14:37We still got
14:38a long way
14:38to go, fellas.
14:40We made a bunch
14:41of red chocolate
14:42for the car.
14:43Look at it.
14:44The chocolate's got
14:44all the little
14:45white bits in it.
14:46So, modeling chocolate
14:47basically is chocolate
14:50and glucose.
14:51And some of the chocolate
14:52did not totally emulsify.
14:55And they were like
14:56little white lumps.
14:59It was almost speckled.
15:00It's a shame
15:01because it'll look good
15:02and then as it sets,
15:03some of the ingredients
15:04separate
15:05and you get
15:05little flecks in it.
15:07You have to keep
15:08sheeting it out.
15:09Eventually,
15:09it breaks down,
15:10but it takes a while.
15:11That's something
15:11we don't have time for.
15:13It's every batch?
15:14Yep.
15:16To get the red
15:17modeling chocolate
15:18usable,
15:19it's going to take hours.
15:20Hours we don't have.
15:22I'm going to have
15:22to pull the whole team
15:23onto this.
15:25I'm a little agitated.
15:26I'm a little agitated.
15:27Three pounds done,
15:29117 to go.
15:31This is what it is
15:32right now
15:32and this is what
15:33it should be.
15:34It's like getting lighter
15:35as we make it.
15:36Well, yeah,
15:36because now the white
15:37is mixing in.
15:38If we start trying
15:39to color correct it too,
15:41this could eat a lot of time.
15:42We're not in a good spot
15:43right now.
15:50This is what it is
15:52right now
15:52and this is what
15:52it should be.
15:53It's like getting lighter
15:54as we make it.
15:55Well, yeah,
15:56because now the white
15:57is mixing in.
15:58If we start trying
15:59to color correct it too,
16:01this could eat a lot of time.
16:02I'm a little agitated.
16:04I'm a little agitated.
16:06And there's so much
16:07that we have to do
16:08because all of it's
16:09looking like this.
16:10So we're not
16:11in a good spot right now.
16:13I don't think
16:14it's worth it
16:14at this point.
16:16Beck,
16:17that's enough on the red.
16:18I think we,
16:19I don't want to say
16:20abort the plan.
16:21Oh, my God.
16:21But I say we
16:23ice the whole car
16:24in green.
16:26I definitely like
16:27the green better
16:27than the red.
16:28You know what?
16:29The green's going to
16:30look better
16:30with that velvet anyway.
16:31Listen,
16:32you're still going
16:32to need red,
16:33so it's okay?
16:34Yeah,
16:35that's our detail color now.
16:36That's it.
16:39Look at that.
16:40Yeah,
16:41this is,
16:42this is what we want.
16:42I mean,
16:43even like there's no,
16:44there's no bumps.
16:45It's the consistency,
16:47it's the color.
16:48I do feel like
16:49we have a lot to do
16:50and not a lot of time.
16:51No pressure,
16:52Becky.
16:55Guys,
16:55we've only got
16:5612 hours left.
17:00Oh,
17:00what'd you do?
17:01I hate the staple gun.
17:03It's the worst staple gun.
17:03It's the only one
17:04in the wood shop.
17:05It's really our only one?
17:06I think so.
17:09Then you wonder
17:10why you're missing
17:10all the staples.
17:12But he's my nephew
17:13and my godson.
17:15I do love working with him.
17:16He's a great help.
17:17He's like a little
17:17mini-me sometimes.
17:19Huh?
17:20Give me my hat.
17:23No,
17:23now you're an angry elf.
17:24No,
17:24now I'm a bald elf.
17:26How's it going,
17:27Becky?
17:29I've got like
17:30probably too many toys
17:31for an adult.
17:33Hey,
17:34I like toys.
17:34This is a fun
17:35theme.
17:38He's wearing a diaper.
17:39Those are some strong
17:40pectoral muscles
17:41out there.
17:42I think that's fine.
17:44We got a lot of,
17:44a lot of toys over here.
17:46None of these
17:46is like a real focal point.
17:48You know,
17:48they're all to make
17:49the bigger impression
17:49that the bag
17:50is full of toys.
17:52This doesn't look
17:53like a basketball to me.
17:55I like that you're
17:56not too worried
17:57about it looking good.
17:58Like,
17:58you're okay
17:58with just doing whatever.
18:00That's,
18:00you know,
18:00that's,
18:01that's cool
18:01that you don't stress
18:03out about things
18:03like that.
18:04Becky did the best
18:05work of her career
18:06on that basketball.
18:06Let me tell you.
18:10Manny,
18:11mark it with the,
18:11with the brick
18:12how tall this is
18:13going to be.
18:14We're putting the screen,
18:14we're putting the screen
18:15here and then we're
18:16building the chest
18:16up here.
18:17Then break it off
18:18right there.
18:19Oh.
18:19So now we know
18:20this is the length
18:21of the gray.
18:22Oh, gotcha.
18:23Right there.
18:23We got the legs done.
18:25Now we got to work
18:25on the lower torso.
18:27We have to build
18:27our upper torso.
18:28We have to build
18:29our arms for our stance
18:30and we have to build
18:31our hands for the lights.
18:33We also got to work
18:33on the backdrop
18:34of our bot
18:35and also the stand
18:36that he's going to be on.
18:38We have a lot of things
18:38that got to go
18:39into this build.
18:40So right now
18:41we're going to start
18:41with the hand
18:42and forearm
18:44of UltraBot.
18:45So as the fellas
18:46over here
18:46are building the torso,
18:48that way we can
18:49at least get a jump
18:50on it.
18:51Got to keep
18:51the pattern four.
18:53All right,
18:53so those,
18:53those two,
18:54those two by sixes
18:56that you had,
18:56put,
18:56put two of them
18:57going across like that.
18:58One and two.
18:59The challenges
19:00and concerns
19:00that I have
19:01breaking us up
19:02into different teams
19:03is the fact
19:03that we might
19:04be building something
19:05and we're not
19:05aligning it
19:06with everybody else.
19:08We're thinking
19:08about making it
19:09like this.
19:09Okay.
19:10So this will be
19:10the front of it
19:11and then the rest,
19:12and then we'll build
19:13the rest of the arms out.
19:14How are we adhering
19:15that to the arms?
19:17What if we build
19:18just a hand,
19:20leave the center,
19:21leave the center part,
19:22leave the center of it
19:23open as we're building
19:24the rest of the,
19:26the body?
19:27So you're just
19:28going to sit the thing
19:29on top of like a nub.
19:30Yeah.
19:30As you're building this,
19:31you have to visualize
19:32the entire arm.
19:33All of this has to be
19:35perfect to the T
19:36so that way
19:37there's no snags
19:37along the way.
19:38This will squeeze
19:39within the space
19:41that you've got.
19:41Yeah.
19:42Yeah, so I just
19:43got to take it apart,
19:44put it back in.
19:45Yeah, that's fine.
19:46All right.
19:47So that 10-15,
19:48I'll have the full arm
19:48completed.
19:50Get to it.
19:51All right.
19:51Cool.
19:52Hey, what's up, guys?
19:54Hey, buddy.
19:56What's up, man?
19:56How you guys making out?
19:58We're making out all right.
19:59Yeah.
19:59Starting to look good.
20:01How you like my interior, huh?
20:02Where's the door?
20:03How you supposed to get in?
20:05Almost done.
20:06Now you're going to be
20:06in trouble
20:07because the cake's coming.
20:09You say so.
20:10All right.
20:10Now, I got a stupid question.
20:13How fragile are they
20:14to deliver?
20:15To be quite honest
20:16with you, buddy,
20:17we're not, as of right now,
20:18we're not even worried
20:19about that,
20:20and I'll tell you why.
20:21The bottom portion
20:22of this is so sturdy
20:23and it's built
20:24so perfectly.
20:25It's a struggle
20:26just for us
20:27to even lift it.
20:28Those legs
20:28are not going anywhere.
20:30Now, the top part,
20:31come to us
20:32in a couple hours
20:32and we'll be able
20:33to answer that question
20:34more thoroughly.
20:36Travis was a make-a-wish kid.
20:38Travis spent many weeks
20:39in a hospital
20:40building with bricks
20:41with his brother
20:42to get through this.
20:44Their passion
20:44for playing with bricks
20:45has never gone away,
20:46but their creations
20:47have only gotten
20:48larger and crazier.
20:50Well, listen, guys,
20:51good luck.
20:51Thank you, man.
20:52Same to you.
20:53Keep up the good work.
20:54All right, man.
20:54Good luck, man.
20:55Buddy, don't work too hard.
20:56Now it's time
20:57to start adding cake
20:58to the sleigh.
20:59I got all the cake
21:01you could eat.
21:02We usually use pound cake
21:03when we're carving cakes
21:04because it holds up
21:06anything you want
21:07to sculpt or carve
21:08and it tastes delicious.
21:10Smell it.
21:11Smell it.
21:14Buddy Jr.'s adding
21:15each layer of cake
21:16and then adding
21:17buttercream frosting.
21:18Let me show you.
21:19What am I doing wrong?
21:20You got to use it.
21:22First off,
21:23whenever you get this,
21:24you don't dirty the knife.
21:26My son,
21:27he's still got
21:27a lot to learn.
21:28I want to show him
21:29that he can do it
21:31and push him
21:32to do great things.
21:35Just the tip of the knife?
21:37Tip.
21:38Just the tip.
21:39Okay?
21:40And then you can spread it
21:40wherever you need it
21:41so that it's even.
21:43You want me to do
21:44the sides too?
21:45No, after.
21:46We're going to get the shape
21:47and then we're going to see
21:48exactly where the sides are
21:50and then we're going
21:50to go from there.
21:52So now we stacked
21:53the cake up
21:54and it's time
21:54to kind of carve it
21:55and, you know,
21:55we're shaping it
21:56into kind of like
21:57a bag shape
21:58and I'm getting excited.
22:00Want to get some dowels
22:01in this thing?
22:02I mean,
22:02from a weight perspective?
22:03I'm not worried
22:04about a weight perspective.
22:05It's just,
22:05it's going to be on a car
22:06that's driving around.
22:08About 12 inches
22:09so that I can
22:09get this hammer
22:10on through.
22:11Okay.
22:13That's why they call it
22:13pound cake.
22:15We're looking at
22:15nine hours, fellas.
22:17Nine hours.
22:18Oh, so this is,
22:19this is straight level.
22:19So this is good then.
22:20Let's see how that
22:21has to go in.
22:22Mm-hmm.
22:23So,
22:23two more studs.
22:26What I have to
22:26start figuring out now
22:27is how to attach this.
22:28The lower torso
22:29is going to be built
22:30directly onto the legs.
22:32Oh!
22:34No!
22:36Now, let it go,
22:37let it go.
22:39It's some unreal.
22:40I can't!
22:42Oh!
22:43It's literally like
22:45putting together a puzzle.
22:46so if a piece
22:47does not fit,
22:48you cannot jam
22:49that piece into it
22:50until it fits.
22:51Damn!
22:52What's this happening?
22:52We mounted on the wrong way.
22:54This is supposed
22:54to go over there.
22:56We can't move on
22:57to any other feature
22:58on our bot
22:59until our torso
22:59is right.
23:09Oh!
23:11Oh!
23:13Smell!
23:14Let it go,
23:14let it go.
23:16It's some unreal.
23:17I can't!
23:18Oh!
23:20It's literally like
23:21putting together a puzzle.
23:23So,
23:23if a piece does not fit,
23:25you cannot jam that piece
23:26into it
23:27until it fits.
23:28Damn!
23:28What just happened?
23:29We mounted on the wrong way.
23:30This is supposed
23:31to go over there.
23:32We can't move on
23:33to any other feature
23:34on our bot
23:35until our torso
23:36is right.
23:37What we doing, fellas?
23:38What's going on?
23:38So,
23:39the problem is
23:40that we just did
23:40everything reversed.
23:41We have to get this wall
23:42to this back end
23:44and we're back in business.
23:45so it's a matter
23:46of working fast
23:47to make an adjustment
23:49so that the torso
23:50fits in.
23:51So,
23:52Jermaine,
23:52you said we're going
23:53to leave this wall,
23:54leave the sides.
23:55Yeah.
23:56So,
23:56all right.
23:58Let's finish cutting this out
23:59so that we know
24:00exactly what we're working with.
24:01Okay.
24:03Lock this guy in
24:05and then the shape
24:06is good.
24:08Good.
24:09This week,
24:10the special skill
24:11is originality.
24:12So,
24:13we're making
24:13a rocket-powered sleigh.
24:16It's going to kind of
24:17be like an original toy.
24:19I'm just going to
24:20make jaggedy flamers
24:22as it goes.
24:23To get these streamers
24:24to be like that fake,
24:26you know,
24:26flame,
24:26we're using plastic
24:27because if it's paper,
24:29it could just rip
24:29and fall off,
24:30it had to be rigid enough
24:32but light enough
24:33to blow.
24:34Okay,
24:34turn it on.
24:35Fire in a hole.
24:43Yeah.
24:44This fan is
24:45quite anticlimactic.
24:47So,
24:48the rocket booster
24:48we had
24:50didn't have enough power.
24:52All right,
24:52I think I got
24:53a plan of attack.
24:54Did we even see
24:55if it works?
24:56It's plugged in.
24:57Is it on?
24:59Whoa.
25:00The salve
25:01is to put
25:02a stronger blower
25:03inside
25:03so that we get
25:04more motion.
25:05Right now,
25:06at least we know
25:06the concept works
25:07and this looks awesome.
25:10I think we got a winner.
25:11So,
25:12then we want to do
25:12the bag we're coloring in.
25:14Let's make it gold.
25:15What's that?
25:16Let's make the bag gold.
25:18A metallic gold
25:19Santa bag.
25:21It'll definitely have
25:22a lot more pop
25:23with the gold.
25:24So,
25:24let's get that iced
25:26and then we'll start
25:27covering this first
25:29because then we want
25:29to have any more mess
25:30and then we'll hit the sides.
25:33We're going to just wrap.
25:35Over,
25:35over,
25:36over.
25:37Yeah,
25:37I think just straight across.
25:39Nice.
25:39I'm going to like
25:40fold this over
25:40and make this
25:41the lip of the bag.
25:42Also,
25:43we should make like a,
25:44um,
25:45drawstring.
25:46Yeah,
25:46drawstring.
25:46Mm-hmm.
25:48Making some folds.
25:52Yeah.
25:53Oh,
25:53he's going to look so good.
25:54He's going to look great.
25:57Mm-hmm.
25:59That's a little pop.
26:00It looks great.
26:01It looks really good.
26:02Throw some test time.
26:03It's like snug,
26:12snug,
26:13snug.
26:13Snug it.
26:14This is looking awesome.
26:15We got the torso,
26:17we got the belt.
26:17Mm-hmm.
26:18This is really looking good.
26:19So,
26:19we're actually doing great time.
26:21How we doing?
26:22Just want you to take a look
26:23at what you're dealing with.
26:24That looks cool.
26:26See the detail?
26:27Oh,
26:27yeah,
26:28I like the fist.
26:29We had a big problem.
26:31So,
26:31all our modeling chocolate
26:33wasn't mixed in enough.
26:35Oh.
26:35We definitely had a setback.
26:37We're not doing that good.
26:38We actually put on
26:39a torso backwards,
26:40so we're,
26:41we're in the same boat.
26:42It's going to be tight, man.
26:43It's going to be tight.
26:45We can't wait to see
26:45what you guys made.
26:46We're excited for it.
26:47Likewise,
26:48likewise.
26:48All right,
26:49man.
26:49We got to turn off the monitor.
26:50Good luck.
26:51You too.
26:52Let's go,
26:53let's go,
26:53let's go.
26:5490 minutes,
26:5490 minutes.
26:55We got to build our shoulders,
26:57and then we're going
26:58to connect it to our arms.
26:59And the final touch
27:00is to put the head on.
27:02So,
27:03like,
27:03determine how wide
27:04the neck is going to be,
27:04so you can build
27:05the supports in the chest now.
27:07I'll make sure
27:07that these don't interfere
27:08with that,
27:09and then you can slide
27:10the neck right into it.
27:11So,
27:11he had four studs
27:12on the right side of the neck,
27:13and four studs
27:14on the left side of the neck.
27:15So,
27:15now you're at 22 studs.
27:17So,
27:17that head has to be
27:1822 studs long.
27:20It's coming over
27:20to Axel there.
27:21Yeah.
27:21All right.
27:2222 studs long?
27:2222 studs long.
27:23We built the upper torso,
27:25and then the shoulders.
27:27Travis,
27:27how you looking
27:27on that shoulder?
27:29It's almost done.
27:30Nice.
27:31I'm going to have
27:31a whole nother shoulder
27:32for you soon.
27:32We're finalizing the arms.
27:34Right now,
27:35as we speak,
27:35we can then think
27:36about putting
27:37our technique connections
27:39in order to hold it in place.
27:40Here's what has to happen,
27:41is that your part
27:42has to intertwine
27:43into that torso
27:44at this point,
27:45so we need that done
27:46like ASAP.
27:47That's going to be
27:47all the difference.
27:48Okay.
27:49So,
27:49about how far out
27:50from the chest
27:51should this be?
27:51That's good.
27:52And then the two gauntlet hands,
27:54we build those separately.
27:55We're going to slide
27:56onto the arms
27:57as the figure is posed.
27:58Remember,
27:59those parts are not
28:00going to be connected
28:00to the robot itself.
28:02When we get there,
28:03it should really
28:03just be plug and play.
28:04We still got two hours
28:05to work
28:06once we get to the location.
28:09Watch your back,
28:09watch your back,
28:10watch your back.
28:11Here we come,
28:12here we come.
28:13Watch your up.
28:13Are we centered?
28:15Um,
28:16I think so.
28:16Pretty centered.
28:17Pretty centered.
28:18Now we can finish
28:19decorating the cake
28:20and add the green
28:20modeling chocolate.
28:22It wasn't supposed
28:22to be green,
28:24but we didn't have time
28:25to try to fix the red.
28:26So,
28:27oh,
28:27oh,
28:27oh,
28:27oh,
28:27oh,
28:28oh,
28:28oh,
28:28I just hope
28:29the green
28:29modeling chocolate
28:30looks good.
28:31Buddy,
28:32get the next one going.
28:33Now it's go time.
28:34This head is coming over
28:35in just a second.
28:36Just get this flushed
28:37all the way through
28:38like you're doing here,
28:39and then you're good.
28:40You ready for me, Mel?
28:41Yeah.
28:42Yeah,
28:42so put the head on,
28:43make sure it looks right.
28:45Guys,
28:4510 minutes,
28:4610 minutes,
28:46come on,
28:46let's go.
28:47Hustle, hustle.
28:48Let's do it.
28:52I'd like to do it
28:53in one piece.
28:56All the way down
28:57to the bottom.
28:58It's finished strong.
28:59It's finished strong.
29:04Any space
29:05that there is in toys,
29:05we'll put sprinkles.
29:06Great.
29:07Love it.
29:07Okay.
29:14All right, guys.
29:15Time's up.
29:16That's it.
29:17All done.
29:18We'll finish it up
29:19when we get there,
29:19but I think we did
29:20an awesome job.
29:21Proud of this team here.
29:22Bring it in.
29:23One, three.
29:24Put it in.
29:24All right, what are we going to do?
29:25One, Christmas.
29:26Yeah, okay.
29:27One, two, three.
29:28Christmas!
29:29Yeah.
29:32All right,
29:33how can we help
29:33with this, uh,
29:34with the tape?
29:35Let's get this wrapped up.
29:36Yeah, this is probably
29:37going to be the most
29:38right now.
29:39Okay.
29:39Are we ready to load up
29:42or no?
29:43I'm ready.
29:44Good.
29:44Forward, forward, buddy.
29:45Drive forward.
29:46Forward.
29:47Get in.
29:47Go.
29:50Yay!
29:51Good, good.
29:51Stop.
29:52Break.
29:53All right, let's close it up.
29:55First step.
29:56First step.
29:56We got this thing done,
29:58but now we have to move it.
30:00Where are we going?
30:01Straight.
30:02We're going straight.
30:02Take your time, take your time,
30:03take your time, take your time,
30:04take your time, take your time.
30:05Oh, f***.
30:06Oh!
30:09Holy smoke.
30:11Just like that.
30:12Damn.
30:21Take your time, take your time,
30:22take your time, take your time,
30:22take your time, take your time.
30:23Oh, f***.
30:24Oh!
30:28Just like that.
30:30It's a bad idea, bro.
30:31Yeah.
30:32I had no support under it, so.
30:33The only thing that I'm worried about is the feet.
30:37The feet was the only thing that shattered.
30:39So we'll put everything together at the spot.
30:41This is the first thing we're going to tackle when we get there.
30:42All right, guys. All right. Cool. See y'all there.
30:45All right.
30:50All right, let's get going. Let's get it going.
30:52All right. Let's get it.
30:54Left side. Left side is all Lego.
30:55Break. Coming to Make-A-Wish, it's overwhelming.
30:58It's emotional, you know, but at the same time,
31:01we have a shattered leg in the back seat,
31:03so we got to rush and get this leg fixed
31:06so we can get our UltraBot together.
31:08Get UltraBot out the car.
31:11You want to start passing me those boxes?
31:13Yeah, let's take those boxes out.
31:15Boxes and buckets. Boxes and buckets.
31:19That makes sense.
31:20It's going to be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle
31:22figuring out where everything is.
31:24I'll make it work.
31:26All right. All right.
31:28This can buckle at any second,
31:30and then we're screwed.
31:31Go ahead. What's going on?
31:33Well, the problem is, is that
31:34Mo's saying if we back this out,
31:37the front bumper's not going to clear the back.
31:39The cake is longer than the lift gate,
31:42and if you pull the cake out, it could fall.
31:44Can you kind of come diagonally out to this thing?
31:47I think the diagonal will hurt you more
31:48because you're going to be in a corner.
31:50Getting this cake out of the truck
31:52is more of a problem than I thought.
31:53What we really need to do
31:55is have another truck here,
31:56and we'll marry the lift gates together
31:59like we did on Buddy Burst Up.
32:00It's our favorite move.
32:01We can't put any red on top
32:03if it's not filled in yet.
32:04I got you.
32:05So we have to take this off.
32:06This looks really bad.
32:08It looks like a mess right now.
32:10We're just going to have to rebuild
32:11the foot, like just dig into it.
32:14You know, we're putting too many small pieces.
32:16We can't use these, man.
32:17Yeah, we ain't got time for that right now, man.
32:19Straight, straight.
32:24Good.
32:25Oh, perfect, good.
32:26That's as nice as you can get it.
32:29Slow.
32:30Straight.
32:31A little more, a little more, a little more.
32:33Good.
32:34Stop.
32:38Okay, Buddy, come forward.
32:40All right, Mo, that's good.
32:41Cut the wheel this way.
32:43Okay, bring it inside.
32:45You good with the feet?
32:46Just looking at it head on.
32:47Is the curvature right in the back now?
32:49Yeah.
32:50Like, I'm going to just follow this outline
32:51and build it up.
32:52That's the size.
32:52It's 14.
32:53It's 14 studs across.
32:54Yeah.
32:55It's time.
32:56It's game time.
32:56We got 10 minutes.
32:57Yep.
32:58It's finished strong.
32:59That makes no mistakes.
33:00That's right.
33:01It's finished strong.
33:06I would try to go a little left
33:07with the bear if you can.
33:12Hey, she's nice and big.
33:13Yeah, she's perfect.
33:17Want me to start touching up the gold?
33:18After.
33:19I like that.
33:20I like that.
33:20That looks really cool.
33:22Focus, focus here, folks.
33:24Focus here.
33:25All right, we're going to go.
33:26Come on, come on.
33:26Leg is breaking.
33:28The leg is breaking.
33:29I'm over here.
33:30Come on, let's build this.
33:31Let's get it together.
33:31We didn't tell you to get the torso yet, man.
33:34We got one minute left.
33:35Come on.
33:35Finishing touches.
33:36That's so cool.
33:37Let's put all the lights on, bud.
33:39I'm here creaking.
33:41Come on, guys.
33:41Easy, easy, easy, easy.
33:43There you go.
33:44Take a look.
33:47Good job.
33:48Good job, boys and girls.
33:50Can I have it in place?
33:53Somebody take a picture quick.
33:55Back to judging in this week are Courtney Quinn and Jason Chatfield.
34:02Courtney Quinn is a color expert.
34:05She's worked for some of the biggest fashion brands on the planet.
34:08Jason Chatfield is a cartoonist and a comedian based in New York City.
34:12Jason's work has been published everywhere, from The New Yorker to Mad Magazine.
34:16For this competition, it's important to have judges to speak to all types of creative forms
34:21and styles and artistic impressions.
34:23I think they're going to be the perfect judges for this.
34:25Buddy, Corey and Travis, your theme for this Christmas challenge was toys.
34:31You were to create something that any kid would be so excited to see under the tree on Christmas
34:37morning.
34:38And the focus of this challenge was originality, something that was really unique for your finished
34:44product.
34:46Corey, Travis, show us what you made.
34:48My brother and I, we love Christmas.
34:51Running under that Christmas tree, getting to that gift, ripping it open, pulling out
34:55the greatest toy.
34:56So we took that same energy and exactly what we loved, we created it 10 times bigger.
35:02All right, let's go.
35:04Oh!
35:06Look at that!
35:08That is incredible.
35:12This is Action Hero Ultrabot.
35:15A-Hub for short.
35:17A-Hub has been built with love and care by these five gentlemen.
35:21And we have over 70,000 Lego pieces constructed to build our bot.
35:29And just for some added flair, we put a tablet in the center because we know how kids love to
35:34play with their tablets and they also want an action figure.
35:37And as a former Make-A-Wish child myself, we would be donating Ultrabot to the Make-A-Wish
35:43Foundation.
35:44Nice.
35:44Bravo.
35:46Bravo.
35:48So beat that.
35:49All right.
35:50Buddy, you have your work cut out for you.
35:53What have you made?
35:54Christmas is by far my favorite holiday.
35:58And I'm Buddy, Buddy the Elf.
36:01We made a giant Buddy the Elfmobile stuffed with toys, ready to deliver to all the good kids.
36:10Show them!
36:11Buddy, what have you made?
36:26Show them!
36:30It's imaginary.
36:31It's not what he did.
36:32Wait, wait, wait.
36:32Let me go check on it.
36:33I'll be right back.
36:35Definitely not impressed by that.
36:36Buddy?
36:36Oh, I forgot to tell you.
36:41Mine drives.
36:43Maybe I forgot to mention it.
36:45So what we made for you is a Buddy the Elfmobile complete with toys for all the good kids.
36:52We're helping Santa, you know, because he's a busy guy.
36:56Our whole car is covered completely in modeling chocolate.
37:00250 pounds of cake in the back.
37:03Complete with solid gold steering wheel, velvet interior.
37:07I mean, even Santa is jealous of our whip.
37:11Just saying.
37:13Let's step over and take a closer look.
37:17To me, I think the most important thing is getting the details right.
37:21For sure.
37:22And I think they really went above and beyond on a lot of these details.
37:25Like the stitching on the baseball is so gorgeous.
37:28Absolutely.
37:29I gotta tell you, man, this thing is phenomenal.
37:32Thanks, man.
37:33Thank you, man.
37:34So cool.
37:35This whole area could have been much grander, you know, because it should feel like an explosion
37:39of toys, right?
37:40Yeah, exactly.
37:40It's an open sack of toys.
37:42Yeah.
37:42And they're spilling out.
37:44This is going to be tough.
37:46It is.
37:46I don't know how we're going to pick between the two, but let's go over and check out the
37:50robots.
37:51Oh, it's so cool to see it float.
37:54Yeah.
37:55Where the other team's cake is really for the kids of today, for the kids of yesterday.
38:01Yeah.
38:01This is for the kids of the future.
38:03I totally agree.
38:04Yeah, buddy, you really outdid yourself.
38:07Yo, get your hand off the cake.
38:09These guys really care about bricking.
38:13They care about the detail.
38:15But I would like to see more of that curved craftsmanship carried throughout, like, in
38:20the shoulders and things like that.
38:22I have, like, an emotional reaction to this, knowing that Corey and Travis were playing
38:27together in the hospital when he was sick.
38:30Yeah.
38:31This thing could fight cancer just the way Travis did.
38:34Just the way Travis did.
38:35You see so much of this brother duo in Ultrabot.
38:39It's such a warm story that this is what kind of brought them together through this really
38:43trying time, and they were able to find their own power to overcome it.
38:48And I see that in Ultrabot.
38:49Yeah.
38:49Thank you guys so much for sharing your creations with us.
38:54We loved seeing them.
38:56Buddy, when we saw your cake, there was so many things that we really enjoyed.
39:01I look at it, and it screams Christmas, and I get so much joy from it.
39:06As much as I loved all the toys on top of the car, when I draw things, I want them to all
39:11feel like they're part of the same universe.
39:14And stylistically, it was a little bit higgledy-piggledy.
39:17It looked like different people made different parts of it with distinctly different styles.
39:23So I would have liked to see it look a little bit more consistent with the toys.
39:26Corey and Travis, I have to tell you, I was blown away by this design.
39:33There's so much that I love about it, but most uniquely, it feels like running down the stairs
39:40as a kid and tearing open the presents.
39:43This is the thing, and it's even got the cardboard backing.
39:46I love seeing your Ultrabot, but I wanted him to be a little bit bigger and a little bit more powerful.
39:53I feel like you built these really strong legs, and I just wish that chest stood a little bit higher
39:58and a little bit stronger for Ultrabot, because you created such a cool character.
40:03There was some amazing work done by both teams.
40:08You gave us some really difficult decisions to make.
40:11Well, the team who conquered Christmas is...
40:16Buddy!
40:19Hey!
40:21Look at him!
40:22Congratulations, Buddy.
40:24Your prize of $5,000 will be donated in your name to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
40:29Thank you, guys.
40:31Seriously.
40:32I want to tip my hat to you guys.
40:35Corey and Travis, you guys inspired me.
40:37So I'm donating this prize in your name.
40:42I couldn't think of two better people to give this check in their honor.
40:46I love those guys.
40:49All right.
40:50This is not a loss for us.
40:51This is actually a win.
40:52Buddy donated $5,000 in our name to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
40:57It's going to spread more dreams and grant more wishes to more kids,
41:01though it would have been awesome to beat Buddy's butt.
41:05And you guys, you guys are the real deal.
41:08Give me a hug.
41:09Hey, love you guys.
41:11Thanks.
41:14I don't like it when mysterious robots show up where I work.
41:20Next time on Buddy vs. Christmas...
41:23What?
