00:00And for Christmas, he's going one step further by putting his lifelike cakes up against the real thing.
00:07Taking on teams who are masters at bringing Christmas to life.
00:11Going head-to-head against Broadway set designers,
00:16glass blowers,
00:19animatronics experts,
00:21and toy brick builders.
00:25But they'll use whatever materials they choose,
00:28while Buddy must use cake.
00:31It's bakers versus makers, as both teams have just 24 hours.
00:36When it's Christmas Eve, you've got to deliver.
00:38To see who can make the most incredible holiday displays,
00:41win $5,000 for a charity of their choosing,
00:45and claim the ultimate bragging rights as...
00:47They're going down.
00:49The team who conquered Christmas.
00:51Christmas!
00:52This is Buddy versus Christmas.
00:55Merry Christmas!
00:58All right, guys.
01:03This week, we're going against David Gallo and Vivica Gardner.
01:08They do the sets for all the big productions in New York.
01:12David Gallo is a Tony and Emmy Award winning set designer.
01:16These guys dream up things for a living.
01:19And they know how to go big.
01:21This lollipop is just an example of the many things they do.
01:24I hate that lollipop.
01:26My team for this week is my brother-in-law, Moe.
01:29Moe can build anything.
01:31Ralph, who's my head sculptor.
01:32My brother-in-law, Mauro, he's a utility man.
01:35Wherever you've got to put Mauro, he does what he's got to do.
01:37And my son, Buddy, who is Cake Boss in training.
01:41For this competition, it's important to have judges
01:43that speak to all types of creative styles.
01:46Jason Chatfield and Courtney Quinn are incredible artists,
01:49and they're going to be the perfect judges for this competition.
01:52This week, the theme is Christmas extravaganza.
01:56And the special skill this week, interactivity.
01:59The interaction with cake is you eat it.
02:01Yeah.
02:02That's enough interaction.
02:03These guys are used to making interactive sets.
02:06So we're going to have to dig deep.
02:08This is not going to be a gimme by any means.
02:10What if we do like a Santa sleigh that you can get,
02:13you can sit in like you're going on a trip,
02:15we'll do some reindeer out the front.
02:16You're going to have to have people climbing in and out.
02:20I think that they're going to destroy.
02:21How about if you do like a giant Christmas tree?
02:23We just do like an eight-foot Christmas tree.
02:25Then what's like interactive, though?
02:26Yeah.
02:27Where's the interactive part?
02:28You know what I've been wanting to do for years?
02:31A giant gingerbread house.
02:33Oh, I love it.
02:34Like life-size that you can walk through.
02:37I'm talking like we're going to dress more up as Santa,
02:41and you can go on his lap and tell him what you want for Christmas.
02:44We're going to build a life-size gingerbread house
02:48complete with sprinkled lawn, five-pound gummy bears,
02:52lollipop trees, gumdrops.
02:54This thing is going to be big enough
02:56where Mauro could fit inside and be Santa,
02:59and Mauro ain't exactly tiny.
03:01We're going to use lights.
03:03We're going to use candy.
03:04As you're walking, oh, my God,
03:06here's a five-pound gummy bear.
03:07Let me eat it.
03:07That's how we beat these guys.
03:10They got 24 hours like us.
03:11Let's go.
03:12Let's do it.
03:13Oh, God.
03:14Gingerbread.
03:17All right, so our assignment is to create a Christmas extravaganza,
03:23and you guys are the most extravaganza people that I know.
03:27One of the really exciting things about being challenged by Buddy
03:29is that he saw us as somebody that he thought could compete in his world.
03:35We've done glitzy stuff on Broadway, in Las Vegas.
03:38We know glitz.
03:39Absolutely.
03:40Buddy is an artist of cake and confection,
03:43and I'm an artist of, like, sort of live performance
03:45and that sort of sense of spectacle and storytelling.
03:48You know, one day we're doing a Broadway musical,
03:50and then the next day we're dealing with puppets,
03:52and then the next day we're dealing with a rock band.
03:55So on our team is Harlan, whose specialty is fabrication, building.
03:59We have Joe, whose specialty is lighting and special effects.
04:03Steve, who is a scenic artist, does all of our painting,
04:06and Vivek's in charge of keeping the whole thing together.
04:08My idea is to build an interactive snow globe.
04:14Should I start to get scared now?
04:15No, no.
04:15We're going to get to that later.
04:17We're going to build a 16-foot-high snow globe with a turntable inside
04:21that rotates, putting a Santa sleigh on top of that
04:24and then surrounding it with a little model of the world.
04:28So the interactive part is the person who actually sit in the sleigh and be Santa Claus.
04:32All right.
04:33How much time do we have?
04:3424 hours.
04:36What?
04:37All right.
04:37Great.
04:38Let's start.
04:38All right, let's go.
04:39All right, let's go.
04:42Okay, that looks good.
04:43That's good.
04:44This thing is going to be big.
04:46I mean, we're going to need, like, 4,000 to 6,000 gingerbread bricks
04:50and, like, 2,000 to 4,000 circles for the roof.
04:53You take the dough.
04:55Mm-hmm.
04:55You make, like, a little ball.
04:57All right, like this.
04:58Okay.
05:00Flour.
05:01Squish it out.
05:05Take it over here.
05:07Watch out.
05:10Okay.
05:10Start with a...
05:11Whoa, whoa, whoa.
05:12You hit the wrong way.
05:13I didn't hit nothing.
05:14Yeah, you did.
05:15You hit this button.
05:16I pulled this.
05:16Yeah, I pulled this.
05:17You got to hit this side.
05:18This sits that way.
05:19All right, all right, all right, all right, all right.
05:21Listen, I'm used to the old school one.
05:23Why not...
05:23Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh.
05:25I'll have another one ready by the time you're ready.
05:34I do believe the assignment was a Christmas extravaganza.
05:40Okay.
05:40Well, extravaganza we could do in 24 hours.
05:43We got to get the file converted,
05:44and then we've got to get it put in for CNC.
05:47So we've got a sphere made out of a series of plywood ribs.
05:51Inside of that, we're going to be attaching a clear vinyl,
05:54and it will contain the wind and the snow
05:56and all the effects and the fog and all of that inside of it.
06:01One of the fanciest tools that we're using
06:03in order to get this done on time is a CNC router machine.
06:08A computer runs a cutting head around it
06:10and will cut out even the most complex shapes.
06:13You sure you got it?
06:14I don't have it yet, but now I do.
06:16This piece will say extravaganza the moment you see it.
06:19One does not ordinarily see a snow globe that is 16 feet tall.
06:22These are half-inch ply with birch.
06:25So this stuff is going to be breaking off like this?
06:27No!
06:28No, nothing is going to break.
06:30Nothing is going to break.
06:31I'm used to making cakes, you know, with flour, yeast, eggs.
06:40This is mostly gingerbread and carpentry.
06:44Buddy went so big on this that this is only half of it.
06:47We still got to build something six foot high on top.
06:51Boom!
06:51I meant to do that.
06:52Did everybody check out our reindeer friend?
07:03Or as we say in North America, caribou?
07:06What?
07:07The only thing we keep seeing is a reindeer.
07:11Is that Buddy?
07:12It was, bro.
07:13That's all right before.
07:14He's going to jump out of there.
07:15I've been trying to spy on him.
07:17I sneak a peek at that monitor every time I can.
07:19And it's that reindeer staring back at us.
07:22Do we have our monitor of what he sees?
07:24Yes, they can see us.
07:25Maybe they put that reindeer there to keep an eye on us.
07:28Good morning!
07:29Good morning!
07:30How you guys doing?
07:31You're doing great.
07:32We're super excited to be here.
07:34Yeah, we work in a lot of different mediums.
07:36But we've never done anything out of food.
07:38I mean, it is incredible what you all do.
07:40We set up a video feed between our two teams.
07:43So we can see what they're doing and they can check on us too.
07:45I just got to ask, why are you wearing a kilt?
07:48Why the kilt?
07:49It annoys the crap out of my children.
07:52I thought that you were trying to psych us out with the whole Braveheart thing.
07:57Did it work?
07:58Freedom will be our.
08:01You can have freedom.
08:02We're going to take Christmas.
08:04Ooh!
08:06Bring it.
08:07Bring it on.
08:07Bring it on.
08:08Come on!
08:11We're going to texture it with a rag, we think?
08:13I think so.
08:14See, look, I make a big, poofy bed and then I just touch.
08:18You got to do that fast, though.
08:19That's setting up quick.
08:20Let's pop it up here.
08:22What is that?
08:24This is the motor control system that is going to make our turntable rotate.
08:31And this should hold the weight.
08:33I mean, we're going to end up putting probably 600 pounds by the time we're done with the turntable.
08:37All the lights.
08:37It's 8 feet.
08:38Lights.
08:39Fancy.
08:39Bands, assuming it all works, we're going to plug it in.
08:42Right.
08:43It looked like it was steeper.
08:46Now that we just finished the bottom half of the structure.
08:49I understand.
08:50We're shy like 3 feet.
08:52Here we go.
08:53First problem of the day.
08:54We're trying to figure out the pitch of the roof.
08:59And doing it in this room is not good because we don't have enough room.
09:03It's about 13 feet.
09:04The decorator room is like 14 feet.
09:06Yeah?
09:07It's taller than here.
09:08There's no book to build a giant gingerbread house.
09:11We make it up as we go along.
09:14Okay, we're going to bring the house in.
09:15Boom!
09:17Well, good thing we made it exactly the same size as the hallway.
09:21We cannot put the house together in the bakery because the ceilings are not tall enough.
09:28So we have to do it in two separate pieces and hope that it's going to marry together well.
09:34Ah!
09:36This is bananas, you guys.
09:39This is absolutely bonkers.
09:41Pretty big.
09:43I have a little ground plan here set up of our actual snow globe showing the eight lights
09:49that we're going to use.
09:50Cool.
09:50And obviously these will be on the turntable so they'll move it around which gives a little
09:54more complication to how we program it but it'll make it fun.
09:57Oh, the lights on your board are turning the color of the lights on the ceiling.
10:00So we have red and green here and that's what they're doing in real life.
10:05It's not going to be that many bricks.
10:07No, we're almost done already.
10:09Look.
10:10Ah!
10:11These are gingerbread bricks and we're going to place them on the gingerbread house with
10:17royal icing and it's going to be how you like basically brick a house.
10:20I'm making the royal icing which is basically the glue that's going to hold this house together.
10:28It's like baker's concrete.
10:29I mean, we're definitely at a little disadvantage.
10:31We have to do everything edible where these guys, if they want concrete, they could use concrete.
10:37Touching or a little gap?
10:38Touching or a little gap?
10:39A little gap.
10:40A little closer.
10:41I just don't want these things to sink.
10:43Yeah, these aren't going anywhere.
10:44Yeah.
10:45You know what I'm trying to say?
10:46Gravity is going to push those things down.
10:49Oh, this one's falling.
10:50Oh, this one's falling.
10:51Why am I two inches short?
10:55It's got to be flush with the wood.
10:56Oh!
10:58Can you flush up a little bit?
11:00You want a hammer?
11:01Why am I two inches short?
11:10It's got to be flush with the wood.
11:12Can you flush up a little bit?
11:14You want a hammer?
11:15I see one falling.
11:21I'm going to move for a minute.
11:23I almost took my head off.
11:27All hands on deck.
11:28We got a rib coming in.
11:29All right, and that's this one.
11:31Time for ribbage.
11:33So we're building the world's largest snow globe,
11:35and an incredibly important element of that
11:37is these large, heavy ribs
11:39that we have to install like a house of cards.
11:43Yeah, some of the major issues we want to be aware of?
11:45Death, destruction.
11:48More importantly than that,
11:49don't break any of the decor.
11:51If you find yourself falling, just don't grab it.
11:54You can be replaced.
11:55This cannot.
11:56Perfect.
11:57So here's the hard part.
11:58Be mucho careful.
12:00I've got it.
12:01I've got this.
12:02All right.
12:02All right.
12:03I'm where I know you're going.
12:04Okay, I'm losing the bottom.
12:05David, come to me.
12:06Come to me.
12:07You're taking the other side across from me
12:08so that we're staying straight up,
12:10which we are not right now.
12:11Okay?
12:12Swing around to there.
12:13Okay, wait, wait.
12:14I think I'm going to knock Joe off the line.
12:15Hold on.
12:15Joe's got to get a position.
12:17There we go.
12:17Watch the back.
12:18Yeah, please don't knock me off.
12:19No, we need Joe.
12:20Jesus.
12:21Whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop.
12:23Wow.
12:23Okay.
12:24Are you okay?
12:24No.
12:25Okay.
12:26Damn.
12:26You wanted them bigger.
12:28I always want everything bigger.
12:29Yeah, this is all your fault, really.
12:30All right.
12:31Okay, there.
12:31There we go.
12:32Yeah.
12:35Oh, wow.
12:36That's pretty cool.
12:37Look at all this stuff thing going on there.
12:39That's some nice detail on that wood there.
12:41Yeah, that is pretty cool.
12:42I wonder if they're cutting that with a CNC machine
12:44or doing that by hand.
12:45Yeah, they got a CNC machine.
12:47Hello.
12:48Hey.
12:48How are you guys making out?
12:49So far so good.
12:50We made an awful lot of sawdust this morning.
12:52Are you cutting them with jigsaws
12:54or with a CNC machine?
12:55Everything we did was with a CNC.
12:57That's why we were able to do everything so quickly.
12:59You want to see my CNC machine?
13:01Here it is.
13:02Here's my machine.
13:03Hey.
13:04How big is your gingerbread house going to be?
13:06It should be about 12, 15 foot tall.
13:09Uh-oh.
13:09We're going to have a race for the tallest.
13:12How tall is the globe going to be?
13:14Whatever number you give me,
13:15I'm going to go higher.
13:16Uh-oh.
13:16I like that.
13:17Nobody's going to see that.
13:21This is rough framing.
13:23Do you have something to do?
13:25We're at that point in the day
13:26where we're completely running out of time
13:28and everybody is stressed.
13:30Just give me the measurement.
13:31An inch by whatever.
13:32Everything.
13:32This is an eighth off.
13:33We're doing rough framing.
13:34We ain't doing trim.
13:35Pressing.
13:36Pressing.
13:36You're ruining my Christmas spirit.
13:38I got splinters.
13:41You're going to do the inside, Ralph?
13:42Inside.
13:43Let's go.
13:43It dices.
13:45It slices.
13:46It's a paper cutter.
13:48This gingerbread is baked, honestly, to perfection.
13:51Because it's got a little elasticity to it,
13:53but it's together.
13:55Uh-oh.
13:56This gingerbread house is gigantic.
13:59The challenge is going to be
14:00that there's a lot of repetitious work on this.
14:04Now that there's no going back,
14:05I feel safe telling you this.
14:07We went too big.
14:08Like, we could have done less.
14:11It's who we are, Ralph.
14:14It's in our DNA to go big.
14:16I know that this is tough.
14:18I know that it seems unrealistic.
14:20But when we're done,
14:22it's going to be ho, ho, ho.
14:25I'm going to be so happy
14:26when I don't have to put gingerbread bricks
14:28on things anymore.
14:29There's a lot of work here.
14:31I mean, we have thousands of bricks to collect.
14:33Thousands of shingles to put on the roof.
14:36Well, it's kind of like Santa Claus.
14:38When it's Christmas Eve, you've got to deliver.
14:40You've got to look at the positives always, Ralph.
14:43I prefer not to.
14:44I like complaining.
14:45It makes me happy.
14:48Nice.
14:49All right, now Harlan and I are going to go inside.
14:51Like, as I say, as a designer,
14:53turntables have caused more trouble
14:54than any other thing.
14:56Yeah, I'm just afraid I'm going to lose my hand.
14:58Drop your fingers in.
14:59Put it in.
15:00Um, Harlan?
15:02Look at that.
15:03So you added a motor
15:04so that we can have it turn
15:05automatically with someone on it?
15:07Correct.
15:08We figured out, actually,
15:09how to make the deck turn.
15:10Because I was like,
15:12eh, we're going to have to get, like,
15:13a person inside,
15:14and they're going to, like,
15:15do one of these things.
15:16How are we going to run the cord out
15:17without the cord circling
15:18the motor in the center?
15:20All the electronics
15:21can't keep winding up
15:23without unwinding.
15:26If the turntable continues
15:27to turn in one direction,
15:29those cables are going to wind around it,
15:31and they can spark and cause a fire.
15:33I don't know the answer to that question.
15:36Well, we were wondering
15:37what we were going to do
15:37with all our extra time.
15:40Yeah.
15:49It's like wrenching under a car.
15:55This turntable of hell,
15:59the wire management thing,
16:00it's a huge problem.
16:03Am I going to be able to take this back?
16:04I'm touching the paint.
16:06The turntable is an essential piece
16:08of what it is that we're creating.
16:10And it's not just to turn Santa's sleigh around.
16:12I mean, we have a huge amount of equipment
16:14on top of this thing.
16:16Pull it up.
16:16Keep going.
16:17No, we're not making pizzas.
16:20Everything has so many details
16:22that you have to think about.
16:24One little thing like that,
16:25like a cable gets in the way
16:27because now the wheels
16:29that have to travel around,
16:30now there's a cable.
16:31I bet you there's a way to program this
16:32where it just does a full rotation,
16:35stops, and goes back.
16:37Harlan figured out a way
16:38that we could add a sensor
16:39that will tell the turntable
16:41when it's made a full rotation
16:42so it will stop.
16:43It won't allow the cables
16:44to keep wrapping up,
16:45and then it'll unwind
16:47in the other direction.
16:48It should stop,
16:49and then it should go back around.
16:55Hey.
17:00Bud, stop eating the candy.
17:05Come on.
17:05I am making gumdrop pom-pom bushes.
17:11We have to put all the toporaries around.
17:14I think it's going to look adorable.
17:15Go get the circle cutters.
17:17Look, if you, uh,
17:19you could do it,
17:19or you could just do it with an exacto.
17:21If you cut a circle,
17:22it's going to be,
17:23would you listen to me?
17:25And don't question everything I tell you.
17:27Say, okay, Dad.
17:27I'm kidding with you.
17:29Trying to teach my son
17:31how to work with me
17:32and what we do.
17:33He doesn't always listen
17:34to everything that I say,
17:35but I actually respect the fact
17:38that he questions it
17:39because his mind is thinking.
17:42What pattern are you doing?
17:43Like, certain colors?
17:44I'm trying to mix it up.
17:45La-la-la-la-la-la-la.
17:47La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.
17:51All right.
17:51I gotta go find Santa's sleigh.
17:53Deep in this warehouse,
17:55we have Santa's sleigh,
17:56and we're certain with that
17:58that we're going to be able
17:59to beat Buddy.
18:01Um, let me see.
18:04This is a giant jack
18:05that I made for a kids' show.
18:09Wow.
18:12It's a big throne.
18:14I don't think I'm allowed
18:15to say what show it's from,
18:16but the guy wears a mask.
18:20There's very few things
18:21in my job that are more fun
18:23than wandering through
18:24these warehouses
18:25and seeing all of these
18:26just wonderful objects
18:27from different productions.
18:29A wall of skulls.
18:31That's from a vampire musical
18:32that did not turn out well.
18:35Hey!
18:36How about...
18:37Oh, look!
18:38This one's already got flames.
18:40These incredible warehouses
18:41just filled to the brim
18:42with all kinds of curiosities
18:44and interesting things.
18:46Ooh!
18:47That is Christmas.
18:52When we were doing the walls,
18:54we just placed the gingerbread bricks
18:56on the wall
18:57and cut them so they fit evenly.
18:59But now we have to overlay
19:00a shingle on top of shingles
19:02so it makes a nice formation
19:03and it takes a lot more time
19:05and you've got to do
19:05a lot more work for it.
19:07Well, some of these are oval,
19:08some of them are round.
19:09I know.
19:10It's not an exact science
19:12we're doing here.
19:13But it's looking good.
19:15Working with a shingle
19:16that's exactly 16 by 24
19:19is one thing.
19:19I'm working with round cookies
19:22that are a little bit different.
19:24A little bit.
19:34Oh, my God.
19:35Oh, my God.
19:37Oh, what is that?
19:44Santa's come early.
19:46My inspiration is to capture a moment
19:48that I've dreamed about
19:49ever since I was a little child.
19:50What is it like to fly over the world
19:52with a bag full of presents
19:53and only the reindeer
19:54to keep you company?
19:55What is it like to have
19:56the snow in your face?
19:57We are creating
19:58the interactive element
19:59by putting the judges
20:00right in the middle of the action.
20:02Who wouldn't want to take a ride
20:03in Santa's sleigh?
20:04We've got to fix
20:06some of the damage.
20:07Yeah, it needs a little love.
20:08Yeah, Santa had too much eggnog.
20:10A little too much eggnog.
20:12Hey, buddy, check it.
20:13We have a sleigh.
20:14You got a sleigh?
20:15Hey, guys,
20:19there's gingerbread.
20:21Wow, that is great.
20:22Brick by brick by brick.
20:24How do you like
20:24my bricklaying skills?
20:25Looks really fantastic.
20:27How are you guys making out?
20:28We're doing very, very well, actually.
20:30We have managed
20:30to put our structure together.
20:32How are the theater kids
20:33doing with their
20:33arts and crafts project?
20:35Hey, what is this guy
20:36with the kilt?
20:37Oh, this old thing?
20:39Oh, you know,
20:40just something
20:40I've had lying around.
20:41They're going to think
20:42I'm you and you're me.
20:44Oh, are you wearing one too?
20:46Merry Christmas.
20:48Hey, guys,
20:49we got to work harder.
20:51This is gorgeous.
20:52His work is amazing.
20:53It's going to be
20:54the greatest gingerbread house.
20:55It's going to be
20:56an absolute work of art
20:57by a true master
20:58and his people.
21:00Then he's going to lose.
21:01OK, so let me get down.
21:04I'm going to need someone
21:04to hold this steady.
21:05You see how it's wobbling?
21:06I'm right on my shoulder.
21:07I got it.
21:07I got it.
21:08Go on his shoulder.
21:09Go on my shoulder.
21:10Dude, it's not going to work.
21:12Let me just do it.
21:13No, stop.
21:14Stop.
21:14No.
21:16Let me go.
21:17Let me go.
21:19Just hug your father.
21:21I got you.
21:23I saved you, son.
21:25I saved you.
21:26All right,
21:27put him in a sec.
21:28Eat it, goofballs.
21:31Let's finish this.
21:34Right now,
21:35my sleigh is beautiful,
21:38but it is lacking in charm.
21:40So I'm going to see
21:41what I can do
21:41about adding charm
21:42and adding pizzazz,
21:45adding razzle-dazzle.
21:50I know exactly what to do.
21:51We have Santa's bag.
22:02Okay.
22:02It might be made out of junk
22:04from upstairs
22:06in the, like,
22:07dirty prop room,
22:09but it's not too bad.
22:11All right, so...
22:12Now, this has got to be
22:13filled with toys,
22:14and I cut these chunks of foam
22:16into squares and rectangles.
22:20And then I've started
22:21using them to create presents.
22:24Right, so I got
22:24all these wonderful ribbons.
22:26I found a box
22:27that says Christmas ribbons.
22:28This is the razzle-dazzle
22:29of show business,
22:30making something out of nothing.
22:36How do you like my wreath?
22:37Oh, that actually does not
22:38look like a tire anymore.
22:39It looks pretty cool.
22:41No, I said it looks good.
22:43Why didn't they call me
22:43the cake man?
22:44So, I'm gonna outline the legs,
22:48I'm gonna outline up.
22:49I'll do the whole trip.
22:50I think that's the thing to do.
22:53Come on, we gotta hurry.
22:54Okay.
22:55You know what, though?
22:56As massive as theirs
22:57looks in the TV...
22:59Ours is gonna be bigger.
23:00I think ours is gonna be
23:01a bigger statement.
23:03We're gonna win!
23:05Merry Christmas!
23:07Uh-oh.
23:07Big problem.
23:09This is messed up.
23:14Push the cookies back up
23:18and everything's gonna be fine.
23:21Oh, wow.
23:22That slid down
23:23all the way to here.
23:24Yeah.
23:25Just push them up.
23:26No, they're gonna fall
23:27right back down, probably.
23:29You don't think
23:29it's gonna fall again?
23:30Well...
23:31These shingles,
23:38if they start sliding
23:39with the judges
23:39and judging the cake,
23:41we ain't gonna win.
23:44You want more icing?
23:45No.
23:55Uh-oh.
23:56Big problem.
23:57I'm gonna push the cookies
24:00back up
24:00and everything's gonna be fine.
24:02You don't think
24:02it's gonna fall again?
24:05You really gotta
24:05press them down.
24:06You can't just place them.
24:08Oh, yeah.
24:08These are very loose.
24:09Yeah, give them all
24:10a good push.
24:12This is a giant,
24:14life-size gingerbread house,
24:16and there's probably, like,
24:18two to 4,000 roof shingles.
24:22And they shifted.
24:23They don't really have
24:26a lot of time to recover.
24:27Just let's put
24:28a couple snow piles.
24:30Yep.
24:31And then the roof is done.
24:32Christmas, Christmas,
24:34la, la, la,
24:34moldy old baloney.
24:36Don't forget
24:37your old shipmates
24:38and a happy new year.
24:40Guys, come on.
24:41We gotta move.
24:42We're not even gonna
24:42finish this today.
24:43Listen to Mauro.
24:45It's so weird
24:46to, like, draw this stuff
24:48with a pencil
24:48and then have a robot
24:51cut it out.
24:51One of our important elements
24:53is the ground row
24:54around the bottom.
24:56A ground row
24:56is a two-dimensional cutout
24:58out of plywood
24:59or some other
25:00flexible material
25:00that represents
25:02the buildings
25:02and all of the
25:03different landmarks
25:04of the world.
25:05Every single structure
25:06has a chimney.
25:07Oh.
25:08The George Washington Bridge,
25:09the Taj Mahal
25:10has a chimney
25:11because Santa Claus
25:12is coming to town.
25:13It's a lot of piping,
25:21but that's really
25:22what's gonna
25:22differentiate it
25:24and make it look awesome.
25:25No mold,
25:26no CNC machines.
25:27Old school, baby.
25:28Are we actually
25:29closing in
25:30on the end of this?
25:33Oh, the fence.
25:36The fence.
25:37I haven't even
25:38thought about the fence yet.
25:40Besides the fact
25:41that this is gonna be
25:42three trucks full
25:43and we have to
25:44drive it an hour away,
25:45take it all out
25:46of the truck,
25:47assemble it,
25:48and I'm going nuts.
25:49The good news is
25:51every single piece
25:52for this cake
25:53is almost done.
25:55The bad news is
25:56every single piece
25:57for this cake
25:58is just almost done.
25:59You need something,
26:01like, right here
26:01in the middle
26:02to start it off.
26:03Hey, Mauro.
26:04Yo.
26:04We take some PVC pipe,
26:06we wrap it
26:07in this red
26:08electrical tape.
26:09Looks like a candy cane,
26:10no?
26:11Yeah.
26:14Hey, buddy,
26:15you there?
26:17Buddy.
26:19You guys see
26:19a cake boss?
26:21They're so busy,
26:22they can't talk to me.
26:25Hey, hey, David.
26:26I'm bringing a forklift
26:28because there's no way
26:29we're gonna pick
26:30this roof up
26:31and put it on top
26:32of that house.
26:32So if you need one,
26:33we'll be there.
26:34Oh, can you bring
26:35the forklift?
26:35How you guys making out?
26:37Taking care of business.
26:38Us too.
26:39We'll see you there.
26:40We will see you there.
26:42All right,
26:42we gotta turn off
26:43the monitor.
26:45At this point,
26:46we're turning off
26:46the monitors
26:47because we want
26:48the final project
26:49to be a surprise.
26:50I want to sparkle
26:51all over Buddy's cake.
26:53I want Buddy
26:54blinded by bling.
26:57I think that we have
26:58a really beautiful thing.
26:59Right here, right?
27:01That's pretty cool.
27:02I like that.
27:02Let's try this.
27:03We're scrambling
27:04a little bit
27:04to get it
27:05into a final shape,
27:06but I think
27:06that we're going
27:06to be able
27:07to beat Buddy.
27:08We can't use
27:08the sewing machine
27:09because it doesn't
27:09go up,
27:10it goes down.
27:10We need it
27:11to blow up.
27:12Buddy's such a master
27:13that we really wanted
27:14to pull out
27:15all the stops,
27:16show off everything
27:16we can do,
27:17but we have
27:18to be realistic.
27:20Plug it in,
27:21I gotta move.
27:22This is a lot
27:23to pull off
27:23in this amount
27:24of time,
27:24and that's the real
27:25challenge here
27:26is the time pressure.
27:27Hey, guys,
27:33guys, guys.
27:34Time's up,
27:35all right?
27:35What?
27:36We're not done.
27:36Listen, whatever
27:37we have to do now,
27:37we gotta do
27:38in the theater.
27:39All right.
27:39There's a lot
27:39to do still.
27:40Let's get this
27:40thing taken apart
27:41and put on
27:41the truck
27:41right away.
27:49This I'm gonna do
27:50there, this is done.
27:51The top I'm gonna
27:51do there.
27:52Where are the
27:53last two bursts?
27:53That's about done.
27:56Listen, nothing
27:56looks as gingerbread
27:58house as gumdrops.
28:00Okay?
28:01Make sure they're
28:02nice and good
28:03and even.
28:05That is awesome.
28:07The candy mortar
28:08is cool.
28:09Holy cow.
28:10Look at what we
28:11did.
28:11This is definitely
28:12a big hug.
28:15Come on,
28:15everybody.
28:15Come on in here.
28:16Big group.
28:17This isn't a hug.
28:18I just need you
28:19to hold me up.
28:19This is one of the
28:20most incredible
28:21builds we ever did.
28:23And I know
28:24that we're tired,
28:25but I promise you
28:26when we put this
28:27together and we
28:27step back there,
28:28this is gonna be
28:29a cake we'll never
28:30forget.
28:30I just gotta say
28:31I couldn't be
28:31prouder of the team.
28:33Let's get it to
28:33the place.
28:34We still got a lot
28:34of work.
28:35Who are you people?
28:36Let's rock and roll.
28:37Let's rock and roll.
28:38Both teams agreed
28:40to do our finishing
28:41touches in under
28:42two hours.
28:42All right,
28:43let's go.
28:43Yeah,
28:44let's go.
28:45All right.
28:47We're done.
28:48So we get to the theater.
28:49Our first job is to
28:50figure out where
28:51the turntable goes,
28:53lay it down,
28:54and make sure
28:54that it's working
28:55properly.
28:57Then we build the rest
28:58of the entire snow globe,
28:59all the effects and
29:00lights on top of that.
29:01Our real priority is
29:03loading in and getting
29:04the turntable to turn.
29:06We're delivering to
29:07the centenary stage at
29:09the Lackland Performing
29:10Arts Center.
29:11Straight, straight back.
29:13Marita, don't stand
29:14back there.
29:15What's the goal for this
29:16to be very scary?
29:18Lights, curtains, and a
29:20big stage.
29:21It's perfect for a theme,
29:23Christmas extravaganza,
29:24and a special skill set,
29:27interactivity.
29:28You ready for the test?
29:29Here goes nothing.
29:32Ladies and gentlemen,
29:33Harlan and Joe.
29:35Hold on.
29:36I want to make sure it
29:37does what it's supposed
29:38to.
29:38If it stops,
29:40then starts and goes
29:41back the other way,
29:42then we can celebrate.
29:44Ooh.
29:46Now's the last that they
29:47heard.
29:48Here you go.
29:48Of Buddy.
29:50Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
29:54I'm a hit in the end,
29:55right?
29:56No, you're good.
29:56The good news is we only
29:57lost about 600 gumdrops.
29:59That's all right.
30:00Gumdrops, we have
30:01thousands of.
30:02You know, there's a
30:03brief second when you're
30:04pushing this house down
30:05the hallway, and you're
30:06like, maybe I could have
30:07made it a little smaller.
30:09Oh, you hear the floor?
30:10I know we got a 10,000
30:11pound forklift, but do we
30:12have a 10,000 pound floor?
30:14Team Gallo built sets for
30:16a living.
30:17We're bakers, not set
30:18builders.
30:19That could be our
30:20downfall.
30:21Please don't fall on me.
30:22Please don't fall on me.
30:23Keep going.
30:25Whoa.
30:26Oh, God.
30:27So many pieces.
30:30The turntable is working.
30:32We're thrilled.
30:35Now we're going to have to
30:36face the things that we
30:38didn't get a chance to do
30:39in the shop while we were
30:40working on the turntable,
30:42filling it with snow and
30:43creating a ride for Santa.
30:45Woo!
30:46Santa just popped a
30:47wheelie.
30:48Buddy, just be careful
30:49when you're lifting with
30:50the door overhead.
30:52I see.
30:52Holy cow.
30:55Come forward about a foot
30:56if you wanted to.
30:59Okay.
30:59Stop.
30:59Okay.
31:00Wait.
31:00Woo!
31:02Holy cow.
31:03It's going to line up
31:06perfectly.
31:07It's got to go left to
31:07right.
31:08You're pretty centered.
31:09This looks crazy.
31:10I can't believe we did
31:11this, you guys.
31:13Now, let's finish.
31:14I think every cake
31:15decorated needs a
31:16forklift.
31:17Push it a little
31:17rough.
31:18I got you.
31:18Hold it from the
31:19bottom.
31:19Of course.
31:19We're building cakes.
31:20We need forklifts.
31:21Holy mackerel.
31:24Look at that.
31:25Oh, whoa.
31:25They got like giant candy.
31:28Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa,
31:29whoa, whoa, whoa.
31:30How's it going?
31:31You guys need help?
31:33All right.
31:33Hey, we're getting there.
31:35I'm sorry.
31:35I'll leave you alone.
31:36I'm sorry.
31:36I'm sorry.
31:37You guys look like
31:37you're behind.
31:39Just let them work.
31:41I'm going to need more
31:50snow.
31:55I've been inside the globe
31:56for a lot of time,
31:57gluing little details in,
31:59making embellishments.
32:00All right, hammy china.
32:02I have germy.
32:03I'm always adding more
32:04and more, more detail,
32:05more glitz, more whatever
32:06it is.
32:07And while inside the
32:08turntable, it's really
32:08tight in there.
32:10Oh, no.
32:10Oh, no way.
32:13Oh, can I break
32:14the turntable?
32:15Oh, no.
32:16Yeah.
32:17While I was inside
32:18the piece adding
32:18a lot of these details,
32:20I accidentally dropped
32:21a tool down in between
32:22where the wheels go
32:23and jammed the entire
32:25thing up.
32:25You can't make
32:26this up.
32:28No more turntable.
32:40We've got to finish
32:42the gingerbread house.
32:43Sprinkles.
32:45Sprinkles!
32:46Elevator up.
32:48We're down to the wire here.
32:50We have to put all
32:51the finishing details.
32:52There's still a lot of
32:53things that's got to happen
32:53to make this all come
32:54together.
32:57Up, up, up, up, up, up.
32:59That's good.
33:01They're going to have to
33:02hang me over the house.
33:04And I'm just going to put
33:04my arm on and pipe.
33:06Okay.
33:08I'm going to need
33:09another bag in a second.
33:10Be ready to throw me one.
33:13And as I'm putting it,
33:14you can see it's really
33:16coming to life.
33:18Let us know!
33:20We planned a lot of this
33:22around the turntable.
33:23We planned everything
33:23around the turntable.
33:24We planned everything
33:25around the turntable.
33:26Hey, Joe!
33:27What?
33:28When do we see
33:29the donut light up?
33:32As soon as you guys
33:33get the hell out of there.
33:34We were out of there.
33:35We never placed blame.
33:36We just moved forward.
33:37We're not going to say
33:38who broke the turntable.
33:40But it rhymes with
33:41Mavid Shmallow.
33:43We destroyed it.
33:45So listen, we've been
33:46peeking through the curtain
33:46and seeing what he's got
33:47going on, and it's
33:49a beautiful thing.
33:50I'm excited to show
33:51him what we got.
33:51This looks rad.
33:52Yeah.
33:53We all believe that
33:54the show must go on.
33:55All right, we're going to
33:56put the moose on the
33:57left side there.
33:58Turn him a little more.
34:00Other way, other way,
34:01other way.
34:01That's good.
34:02We've seen the fog
34:03machines work.
34:04Okay, let's see the
34:05fog machines.
34:06I would rather the
34:07fog machines work
34:08than the mirror ball.
34:09Seriously.
34:10For the fence,
34:11watch this trick.
34:14Hurry up.
34:16Perfect.
34:20Time's up.
34:20Time's up.
34:21We're done.
34:22When you have to do it.
34:26It's almost like driving
34:29with one eye.
34:30You really have to trust
34:32what you did is going to
34:33work.
34:37Jason Chatfield and
34:38Courtney Quinn are
34:39incredible artists, and
34:40they're going to be the
34:40perfect judges for this
34:42competition.
34:43Courtney Quinn is a color
34:44expert.
34:45She's worked for some of

34:58Team Buddy.
35:01Team Gallo.
35:02The theme for this
35:03competition was Christmas
35:05extravaganza.
35:07The finished pieces had to
35:09not only have something that
35:11was spectacular, but
35:12something that was
35:13interactive.
35:13You guys created something
35:16so big, it can barely even
35:18be contained by our
35:19curtains.
35:20All right, Team Buddy,
35:21let's see your work.
35:23You guys ready?
35:26Merry Christmas!
35:29Woo!
35:29Yeah!
35:30Oh, my God!
35:32Home, home, home.
35:34Merry Christmas, everybody.
35:35Oh, we got Santa!
35:38Wow.
35:39It looks amazing.
35:41Oh, and this is edible.
35:42You could dive into sprinkles
35:44if you want.
35:44I can smell it from here.
35:46Yeah, you can smell that
35:47gingerbread.
35:49Fresh.
35:49It smells like Christmas.
35:51This is incredible.
35:52You guys have completely
35:53outdone yourself.
35:54This is one of the biggest
35:55things you've ever done,
35:56right?
35:57I would put it on my top
35:58five.
35:59This is amazing.
36:02Buddy, thank you.
36:04Team Gallo, what have you
36:06made for us?
36:07All right, it's showtime,
36:09folks.
36:11Oh!
36:11Oh!
36:12Team Gallo, what have you
36:20made for us?
36:21All right, it's showtime,
36:24folks.
36:28Wow!
36:32It's a full snow globe.
36:35There's snow in there.
36:36We asked you to go big
36:38and you went bigger.
36:40Anything worth doing
36:41is worth overdoing.
36:42That's always been my motto.
36:44I wanted to show Santa
36:46flying around the world,
36:47bringing joy and toys
36:48and happiness
36:49to everybody in the world.
36:51Paris and London,
36:52New York City
36:53and the Chrysler Building,
36:54the Brooklyn Bridge,
36:55New Jersey.
36:56Hey, all right.
36:57Hey!
36:58Does it spin?
37:01It, it, okay.
37:02Well, there's a very sad
37:03and tragic story
37:04about the spin.
37:05Santa had spent, uh,
37:07a tremendous amount of time
37:08making it go round and round
37:09and then I broke it.
37:11You're on the naughty list
37:12for sure.
37:12I'm definitely on the naughty list.
37:14But you can take a ride on it
37:16and experience Santa's journey.
37:18I want to do that.
37:20All right, let's take a closer look.
37:22Let's do it.
37:24Wow.
37:25That is one hell of a chimney.
37:28I know, it's giant.
37:29I love the colors.
37:31They've really stuck
37:32to the traditional color scheme.
37:33For sure.
37:34Oh my God.
37:35They're real gummy bears.
37:37Giant.
37:37And it's delicious.
37:39There's nothing more interactive
37:40than having the art in my tummy.
37:42Hi, Santa.
37:44Welcome to Santa's house.
37:45Can I sit on your lap?
37:47Of course.
37:47You've been naughty or nice?
37:50I've been naughty
37:50but I'm willing to learn.
37:52What would you like for Chris?
37:53Tell me.
37:53Can I have this?
37:54Yeah, we can rent this out
37:55as a small little
37:56one-bedroom condo.
38:00I am just blown away.
38:02The bling factor,
38:04the lights,
38:04the razzle-dazzle.
38:05But you know what I love?
38:07I love the story.
38:08Christmas Eve
38:09and flying through the blizzard.
38:11We wanted to represent
38:12the whole planet
38:13all the way around the world.
38:15This was a hard year.
38:17It was the first time
38:18that everybody in the world
38:19was going through
38:20something together.
38:21What happened this year
38:23is like something
38:23we've never seen before
38:25and it happened to all of us.
38:27It happened to all of us.
38:28We wanted to bring that in
38:29and bring back joy.
38:30After you said that,
38:31I just want you guys to win.
38:32So bad.
38:34I really do.
38:35So do we.
38:35All right.
38:37Can I go in?
38:38Yeah.
38:41Hey, it's me
38:42in the rearview mirror.
38:44Ah, that's not funny.
38:46Oh!
38:47Oh!
38:49This is amazing.
38:50You guys really nailed
38:52the proportions.
38:53That is fantastic.
38:55The arch is fantastic.
38:57The circular window,
38:58really, really stunning.
38:59It's adorable.
39:00You got to go in
39:00and check it out.
39:03Oh, my God.
39:04I love gingerbread.
39:05Now, here's your Christmas card.
39:08I got it.
39:12Team Buddy,
39:13you really impressed us
39:15with your size
39:15and your scale,
39:16but also the attention
39:17to details.
39:18One thing I would have
39:19loved to see is
39:20if you would sub
39:21the PVC pipe
39:23with something edible.
39:24Buddy,
39:25I literally got goosebumps
39:26when I saw this thing.
39:28But I have to say,
39:29I would have loved
39:30more of a wow moment
39:31after the curtain fell.
39:33Maybe something
39:34coming out of the chimney
39:35or Santa doing something,
39:37but fantastic work,
39:38Team Buddy.
39:39Fantastic.
39:39Thank you very much.
39:40Team Gallo,
39:41if Team Buddy says Christmas,
39:44yours screams it
39:45through a megaphone
39:46in four-part harmony.
39:47I'm usually fairly understated.
39:50I can tell from the jacket,
39:52but I have to tell you,
39:54when I was in this sled,
39:55I really thought,
39:57oh, boy,
39:58I'd love this thing to move.
39:59I have to tell you,
40:03growing up,
40:03I had this childhood dream
40:05of being inside a snow globe.
40:08So thank you for bringing
40:09this dream
40:10that you didn't know
40:10I had to life.
40:12We're in the
40:13bringing your dreams
40:13to life business.
40:15Both of us.
40:16Amen.
40:16Buddy's piece
40:17is spectacular.
40:19It's gorgeous.
40:20And I got to say,
40:21I feel a little bit nervous.
40:22When I see David's design,
40:24I'm for it.
40:24Maybe we didn't go
40:25bring it on.
40:26We have to pick a winner.
40:28So,
40:29the team
40:31who conquered Christmas
40:33is
40:37Team
40:41Buddy.
40:45Your prize of $5,000
40:49will be donated
40:50to the Bindle Stiff

40:53to support the arts.
40:54If you want a rematch
40:55next year,
40:56we're down.
40:56I think you would
40:57take us out.
40:58Are you going to
40:58chicken out now?
40:59I might chicken it out.
41:00We were just thrilled
41:02to be a part
41:02of this competition.
41:03And if you want
41:04to do a rematch,
41:05just try us on Halloween.
41:07This was a lot,
41:08a lot of fun.
41:09And to have my son there
41:11with me on this,
41:12like,
41:12epic cake build,
41:14I'm so proud
41:14of this moment.
41:20Glassblowing
41:20can be dangerous.
41:21My hand is burning up.
41:22Keep going.
41:23Next time.
41:25We're going up against
41:27the world-renowned
41:28glassblower.
41:29Because now
41:29it's getting out of control.
41:30What's wrong?
41:31It's flighting.
41:32Amazing.
41:33Our biggest enemy
41:33is going to be gravity here.
41:35He's upside down.
41:36Whoops.
41:36I broke a star.
41:38I didn't break it,
41:40you did.
41:40But it's not true.
41:41But what did you do?
41:43Ah!
