Nick Kroll explores the themes and inspiration for his SXSW Film Adult Beginners. Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale take a dip into adulthood from the kiddie pool.
Transcript
00:00We're outside the Four Seasons in Austin.
00:03We're about to head inside and talk to the cast of Nick Kroll's Adult Beginners.
00:07Now, Nick, this is your story, right?
00:09What was the inspiration?
00:10I have 12 nieces and nephews, and I realized that I am not fit to take care of any of these children.
00:19So it led me to think about an idea of a movie of a younger brother who's incapable of being a nanny.
00:24This is Teddy's nanny.
00:25Actually, his uncle.
00:26Teddy!
00:27Let's go crazy!
00:28I made the movie with my sisters and brothers and their husbands and wives in mind.
00:33I really like the idea of, like, you know, adults that weren't quite adults yet,
00:36even though they had the sort of trappings of adults.
00:39A great Instagram would have been the baby in the suitcase.
00:43How did that whole thing go?
00:45It was the first shot we did in the movie in the suitcase,
00:48and he hopped right on in there and was super comfortable,
00:52and it was a real test of, like, how is this going to be working with these two very sweet boys
00:57who play Teddy, and it was this great question of how we were going to get along.
01:02Why are you holding on to me?
01:03I'm not entirely comfortable here.
01:05Me neither.
01:05The thing that I loved about this script was how much heart it has,
01:10that it's really edgy and funny, but ultimately has a lot of heart,
01:14and I related having a brother that I don't call enough,
01:18and we don't get together enough, and I think everybody can kind of relate to that.
01:22Yeah, this film is a sort of a broad comedy, like, say, what Nick Cole does on Crowell's show.
01:26A little bit different, a little bit different to that.
01:28But I personally love these sort of films, you know, that are a little bit more subtle,
01:31and you do relate.
01:32I mean, as an actor, you just want people to relate to what you do,
01:35and relationships with siblings are so universal,
01:37and that feeling of estrangement you might have with them
01:40or that loaded history you have with everybody in your family.
01:43It's such great material to mine for a writer or a director or an actor, I think.
01:47It's just endless.
01:49My sister's pregnant, so I'm, like, helping her out a little bit.
01:51Kids.
01:52Yeah, they're the future.
01:54We'll see, but...
01:55Mm-hmm. No, they are.
01:56They will be.
