00:00Supreme Court Issues Decision in Texas Redistricting Case
00:03A federal court has cleared the way for North Carolina to move forward with its newly revised
00:08congressional map, rejecting efforts by civil rights groups to block the updated district
00:12lines ahead of the 2026 election. Instead, the court noted that evidence pointed to political
00:18motivations behind the map's design, not racial ones. The rest of the state's congressional
00:24districts remain the same. This is the latest turn in North Carolina's long-running redistricting
00:29battles. After the 2020 census, the state legislature drew new maps in 2023, prompting
00:36legal challenges from groups that claimed the lines were unfair to minority voters.
00:41The plaintiffs were allowed to file new complaints focused on the 2025 map,
00:45but their attempt to stop it before a final trial did not succeed. Republican leaders in the General
00:50Assembly said the ruling confirms their right to adjust district boundaries mid-decade,
00:55as long as they follow legal guidelines. Representative Destin Hall, who chairs the
01:00House Redistricting Committee, and Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger, both said the court's
01:05decision reflects that the legislature followed the Constitution. Civil rights groups, however,
01:10remain concerned. The NAACP and Common Cause argue the map is part of a broader pattern of weakening
01:17minority voting power and protecting Republican control in a state that remains politically competitive.
01:22They said shifting black voters from one district to another may reduce their ability to influence
01:28elections. Although the court did not decide the final outcome of the legal challenges,
01:34the rejection of the preliminary injunction means that the 2025 map will be used in the upcoming
01:392026 elections. The court made it clear that the case is not over and that the plaintiffs may still
01:46pursue their legal claims during a full trial.
