During a press briefing on Tuesday, Texas State Sen. Carol Alvarado (D-TX) spoke about gerrymandering in Texas.
Transcript
00:00I would now like to introduce Senator Carol Alvarado to the podium.
00:05We welcome you and we thank you for being here today with your colleagues.
00:10Thank you, Governor, and we appreciate the hospitality you and your colleagues have shown
00:15us.
00:16Secretary, thank you.
00:17Boy, do we know how important secretaries of state are in charge of elections.
00:23Your governor has been a true supporter.
00:26We appreciate your very strong words and your passion that you have delivered here today,
00:32but in our meeting, expressing support for our efforts.
00:36We're here on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, who by the way was
00:42signed by a legend, a Texan, Lyndon Johnson.
00:47And you all hear the game, Texas Hold'em.
00:50Well, we are literally holding the line on democracy, not just for Texas, but for our
00:57nation.
00:58We are here to talk about with other legislators from around the country.
01:04This is coming to you.
01:06You're next.
01:07This is not a Texas problem.
01:10This is a United States of America problem.
01:15Today President Trump said that he was entitled to five more seats in Texas, five more Republican
01:25seats.
01:26And we're here to say nobody is entitled.
01:29The people of those districts are entitled to those seats.
01:34They were very specific, very precise in going after Texas.
01:39The DOJ sent a letter which prompted all of this, targeting four districts, four districts
01:46that are majority-minority districts, three represented by African Americans and one by a Latina.
01:55Texas has historically been in the courts when it comes to redistricting, when it comes to
02:00voting rights, when it comes to women's reproductive health.
02:04So the governor said this earlier in our meeting.
02:07We have become so accustomed to rolling up our sleeves and fighting because we know that
02:13this is not stopping in Texas.
02:16This is coming to a state near you.
02:19And we have had so much support from our colleagues around the nation.
02:24We have visited with states that they know, they have already been threatened by President
02:29Trump, that they are next.
02:32So being here in Boston, National League of Cities, and conversing with others has been
02:38very productive.
02:40I also want to acknowledge that we have a total of eight senators that are here with us and
02:47two House members that are with us.
02:50And we have all been in this fight and we will continue to continue fighting for democracy
02:57across our nation.
03:00Thank you so much.
03:01Thank you so much.
