00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome back for another week of Countdown.
00:35It's mid-November already, so let me tell you what's happening.
00:38Three more full weeks only of Series 90, then three shows,
00:42and then we're going to be into that big pre-Christmas extravaganza,
00:46the climax of Series 90, the quarterfinals, semis and finals.
00:50So there's still room for someone to emerge from the Countdown shadows
00:55and steal this series. How are you doing, Rachel?
00:58Good, how are you?
00:58Yeah, good. It's a happy... I don't have to use second names.
01:01Happy birthday, Ant. It's his birthday today.
01:04He's 49. Dex a little older. He's already turned 49.
01:08Just recently, I think about a month ago, a month or two,
01:11they won the National Television Award Best Presenter
01:14for the 23rd year running.
01:18And do you know, with anybody else,
01:20I think there'd be a little bit of like, really?
01:22Actually, yeah, fair enough, in my opinion, fair enough.
01:26They have been the best mainstream presenters of my lifetime.
01:29Yeah, and they've been on our screens since they were teenagers.
01:31Yeah.
01:32I remember when I was a teenager, we were going on holiday,
01:35and we were at the airport,
01:37and Ant was there, you know, going on about his business as usual,
01:40and my mum was like,
01:40I'm sure I know that guy.
01:42Does he work at the bowling alley near us?
01:45She probably recognise him more now.
01:47Yeah.
01:47Happy birthday to you, Ant.
01:49And, yeah, there you go.
01:51Well, let's get over to Dictionary Corner.
01:53Let's get ready to rumble, some might say.
01:56She is our referee,
01:58the national treasure that is Susie Dent.
02:00And alongside her this week,
02:02the business tycoon,
02:03the celebrity chef,
02:05the DJ,
02:06the one and only Levi Roots is back.
02:10Well, Levi, you get to meet our new champion.
02:13Won her first game on Friday.
02:15Helen McGivern, controversially born in Warrington,
02:18defected to Wigan,
02:20which is where we find her now.
02:22Well, Helen, you're up against Julian Copeland today from Romford.
02:25How are you, sir?
02:26Very good, thanks.
02:27Big snooker fan?
02:28Big snooker fan, yes.
02:29Yes.
02:30They say never meet your heroes.
02:32But you had no time to think about
02:33meeting one of the all-time snooker greats.
02:35You work at a store we'd all know as a sales assistant.
02:38Tell us what happened.
02:39Yeah, I was working by the front door.
02:42Steve Davis walks into the building,
02:46or actually runs into the building,
02:48asks me,
02:49do we sell bow ties?
02:51At the time, we didn't.
02:53So, looking up, I just said,
02:55sorry, Steve, we don't.
02:57Just scarpered out the door ridiculously quickly.
03:00If he'd moved that fast,
03:00he would have beaten one...
03:01Ronnie O'Sullivan's 147 times.
03:04What a great way to be an absolute legend.
03:06It was, yeah.
03:07Right, let's break off.
03:08Good luck to Julian.
03:09Good luck to Helen.
03:10APPLAUSE
03:11Hell's bells.

04:31Pagodas and aphids.
04:33Pagodas is a lovely spot.
04:34We haven't seen that one.
04:35Aphids also very good, but Pagodas takes it.
04:37Yeah, well done.
04:38Can we add to that, Levi?
04:39Yeah, we've got a nice seven in Adagios.
04:42I think Adagio for strings, so a load of all the cheesy quavers out there.
04:45All the lovers of rave music.
04:47What's the official definition?
04:48It is compositions marked to be performed in slow times.
04:51Right.
04:53Let's get another record on.
04:54See you, Julian.
04:55Hi, Rachel.
04:56Hi, Julian.

06:06Seven.
06:07Seven, look at this, back and forth.
06:09Julian?
06:09Losing.
06:10Losing.
06:11Which you are this round, because Helen's going to say...
06:14Slaving.
06:15Well spotted.
06:15Blaving away.
06:16And a loving glance to Dictionary Corner.
06:18And Levi?
06:18Yeah, a nice seven also, Malign's.
06:22Yes, take you away from the ings.
06:24Excellent.
06:24When you spot the word losing, Julian, you know you're in trouble.
06:27Let's get our first numbers round of the day.
06:30Julian has studied mathematics and accountancy,
06:33so I think it's going to be hot stuff at the numbers.
06:35Helen, you're choosing.
06:36One large and five small, please.
06:38One large, five small, a nice potentially gentle start to the week.
06:42Let's see.
06:43First numbers.
06:44Seven, eight, nine, two, one.
06:48And the large one, 100.
06:50And the target?
06:51443.
06:53443.
06:53Numbers up.
06:54Three, four sites.
06:54No very, two, one.
06:56Perfect.
07:06Excellent.
07:07That's all.
07:08Too loud.
07:08Okay.
07:08One.
07:09Three, four.
07:09Three, four.
07:10Two, three.
07:11Two,세요.
07:12Two, for us.
07:13One, two, three.
07:15Two, go.
07:16One, two, go.
07:16Yeah.
07:16Two, go.
07:17I feel that way.
07:19Two, go.
07:19One, two, go.
07:20Three, two, go.
07:21One, two, go.
07:224-4-3. For Helen?
07:27No, not close enough. And for Julian?
07:29Yeah, I think I've got it. Off you go.
07:308 divided by 2 is 4. Yep.
07:33100 plus 9. 109.
07:36Multiply by the 4. 436.
07:39Add the 7. Well done, 4-4-3.
07:43Not a single round
07:45shared so far. This Monday
07:47afternoon's Countdown. Really good show.
07:48Back after this tea-time teaser,
07:51which is a belter.
07:52Knit here. Knit here.
07:54N-I-T. You can get this
07:57for your trainers and your teeth.
07:59You can get this for your trainers
08:00and your teeth.
08:17Welcome back. You can get this
08:19for your trainers and your teeth.
08:21Knit here turns to Whitener.
08:23Turns to Whitener. You'd be sure of it.
08:25Let's get back to the game.
08:26And it's letters from Julian.
08:28Can we start with a consonant?
08:29Thank you, Julian.
08:30G.
08:32And another.
08:33S.
08:35And another.
08:37L.
08:38Vowel, please.
08:40E.
08:41And another.
08:43A.
08:43I.
08:44And a consonant.
08:45And a consonant.
08:50S.
08:52Another consonant.
08:53T.
08:55And a final consonant, please.
08:59Final S.
09:00Thirty seconds.
09:31Time's up. Julian? Seven. And for you, Helen? I'll try a nine. Going to try a nine. Julian? Glasses. Glasses. All right, let's see if this is a fragile nine. Gracias. Yeah. Brilliant. Well done.
09:50Hard to catch your breath. Is that all we've got, Levi? Well, she stole my thunder because I was dying together. So congratulations. Tough. Tough.
09:59We raise her glass only to Helen. And we get more letters. Another consonant, please. Thank you, Helen.
10:05B. And another. D. And a third. M. And a vowel, please. A. And another. O. And a consonant.
10:20T. And a vowel. A. And a final vowel, please. And a final I. Let's see what happens this time.
10:40T. And a vowel, please.
11:11That's time. Helen? Five. And for you, Julian? I think a five. I think a five. OK, both written down? Yes.
11:18Yes. Excellent. Helen? Today. And for you, Julian? Going with amity. Spell it? A. M. I. T. Y.
11:26Oh, yeah. Absolutely fine. It's friendly relations. Right. Amity. Well done. This might be one of those people at home trying all sorts to see whether there's such a thing as a day boat.
11:35But what is in there, Levi? Day boat? No. It's in the dictionary. You're kidding. You're taking day trips.
11:45It's actually, to be fair, it's another term for a day sailor, which is a specific sailing boat without a cabin. But well done.
11:52Wow. Is that it? That's brilliant. No, we've got a seven here. Yeah. Biodata. Biodata in a day boat.
12:00Biographical data. But day boat is much better. Yeah, I agree.
12:03OK, what a round. 30, 22. At least you shared the points for once. And you're picking these numbers, Julian?
12:09Can we have two from the top? Can we have small ones?
12:11You may, indeed. Still one of the safer selections. But let's see. Little ones. Eight, seven, eight, seven.
12:21Maybe not so safe. And the large ones, 25 and 50. And the target, 312.
12:27312. Number's up.
12:29MUSIC PLAYS
12:57312. Julian? 310. 310. And for you, Helen?
13:05Only 318. So seven points. Julian, flying in the numbers. Off you go.
13:09OK, 50 times seven is 350. Yep.
13:12Take the 25, the seven and the eight. The other seven and the eight. Well done. Yep, 310.
13:18I realised after 30 seconds it was divisible by eight. And at that moment it was way too late.
13:22But at that point it all falls out in different ways. So 25 plus the two sevens is 39. And simply times that by eight.
13:31And that brings our challenger, Julian, back to within a point. Every round telling a story. And telling a story now is our Levi Roots. Or should I say Doctor Roots?
13:46I know. It sounds... It doesn't really ring a bell to me until, like, I hear someone like you call me that.
13:52The one and only time, I'm going to call you that. So I come here now, not just to Doctor once, but twice, I believe.
13:58Yes. And I don't know if you remember the whole thing when it was Doctor, Doctor, Doctor. It was a bit moment like that for this summer for me.
14:04I just... The summer has just been absolutely amazing. Lots of awards type thing.
14:08I'm an ambassador for Trussell Trust. And a few schools wanting to call the classes Levi Roots, which for me when I was a kid, I never went to school at all.
14:18I bunked off every lesson.
14:19Yeah.
14:20And now to have classes being called me has just been inspirational.
14:23But I think the most amazing thing was when the University of Westminster and the University of West of England had informed us that they wanted to bestow upon me an honorary doctorate.
14:37Yes.
14:37And, you know, Colleen, I was saying that there's absolutely no... I mean, I've had to call out a doctor quite a few times, you know, with high blood pressure, bad knee and ulcerated stomachs and everything.
14:49But never in a day of Sundays ever thinking of, you know, being called a doctor.
14:56Well, having gone to both universities and standing there with my arms sort of outstretched and the lady comes along to dress you in the, you know, within the iconic uniform of what you get.
15:07And having my dreadlocks been permed and put on the floppy hat that you have with the tassel coming down.
15:14It was all a surreal moment.
15:16But there I was in amongst real recipients, you know, of these awards.
15:21The students was getting them.
15:22It was hundreds and thousands of them getting their awards.
15:26And I felt a little bit out of place, you know what I'm saying, because I've always just thought of myself as a dreadlocks raster man from Brixton who cooks a bit, but can cook a mean, I'm spicy jerk chicken.
15:37But beyond that, it wasn't doing anything to be sort of be called a doctor.
15:43So it was really a strange moment for me to be given.
15:46And then to hear, you know, the vice chancellors of both universities passing the scroll on to me and then calling me Dr. Roots.
15:57Instantly, I was thinking of a few sort of lyrics that I could come up with about that.
16:02But it was really a serious moment for me.
16:05And it was a pleasurous moment to see that it reminded me of my mantra, actually, which I've said before on this show of don't undermine who you are by comparing yourself with someone else.
16:18It's because we're all different, why every one of us is special.
16:22So never set your goals by what other people deem important.
16:26Because at that time, I was thinking myself that I was undermining myself.
16:31But when I was called up and the students were, like, clapping and going absolutely crazy, because they all seen me, you know, crying in tears on Celebrity Big Brother earlier in the year.
16:44And I think they were really inspired by my Dragon's Den moment.
16:47And that made it, brought it home to me and thought, yes, it was real.
16:51And, yes, you are Dr. Dr. Roots.
16:54Right, brilliant.
16:55Thank you very much, Levi.
16:56Pleasure.
16:57Well, this shows just what the doctor, doctor ordered, isn't it?
17:02Just one point in it and we get back to it.
17:05And it's your letters, Helen.
17:06Can I have a consonant, please?
17:07Thank you, Helen.
17:09S.
17:10And another.

17:30G.
17:32And final consonant, please.
17:35Final P.
17:36And here we go.
17:37And now we're going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going
18:07Helen?
18:08Seven.
18:09Ooh, Julian?
18:10Six.
18:10Just a six.
18:11What's the six?

18:12Grumps.
18:14And Helen?
18:14Muggers.
18:15Yeah.
18:16Yeah, very good.
18:17Indeed.
18:17Excellent.
18:18Actually, seven points there.
18:19Anything else?
18:20Yeah, lots of sevens, but the best one is Supreme.
18:24Supreme.
18:24Just Diana, nobody else.
18:26Just Diana on her own.
18:28Let's get back to points in the bag for the champion
18:30and more letters now from her challenger.
18:32OK, can we have a consonant, please?

19:43Nuttier. And for you, Helen? Runtime.
19:46Let's get straight over to Susie Dent. Runtime.
19:49I didn't think it would be one word, but it is, yeah,
19:52the time of a film or DVD. Well done.
19:54So, there you go. Seven points each, Levi Roots.
19:57Er, runtier? Yeah, I don't like that word, but it's in the dictionary.
20:01Right, OK, numbers. Third time today. And Helen?
20:05I've got four large and five small again, please.
20:07Well, I thought we were going for four large in a second.
20:09Right, one large, five small. You're about to be in trouble.
20:13And the five small ones for you. Third time's a charm.
20:16Five, six, two, eight, three, and 100.

23:22Reasons.
23:22A big moment, this, Helen.
23:24Saunders.
23:25Saunders, very good indeed.
23:26Lovely, your favourite word.
23:28Well, it's the first time in Countdown history I didn't see it.
23:31Helen, how dare you?
23:33Fantastic.
23:34Yes, Saunders is there.
23:35A wonderful, wonderful eight.
23:37What can we add to that, Levi?
23:39Yeah, lots of eights,
23:40but particularly what's been happening in America a few weeks ago,
23:44we've got senators.
23:45Senators.
23:46Nice, well done, well done.
23:47But look at that, 62.46 now,
23:50as Helen gets back to more letters.

24:31So if you don't ask one or waitvem it out.
24:33Yeah.
24:34Here we go.
24:35Let's go.
24:35And a consonant.
24:37So if somebody wants to speak,
24:38watch a original vowel, please come in.
24:39And a directional vowel.
24:40And a consonant содерж you can know.
24:41And a consonant Hash Kom
24:41Oh,
24:42and a consonant.
24:42And a consonant.
24:50So if somebody wants to speak,
24:51Julian?
24:54I'll go with a seven.
24:55And for Helen?
24:57A seven.
24:58A seven.
24:58Julian?
24:59Outrace.
25:00Yeah, and for Helen?
25:02Counter.
25:03OK, counter.
25:05No worries with that.
25:06Can you outrace?
25:07You canter and the outrace, yes, very well done.
25:09Well, you outran me.
25:10I only had that six.
25:11Can you go to eight?
25:12Yeah, I've got a lovely eight here, Colin.
25:14Nocturne.
25:15Nocturne.
25:16Nocturne is a piece of music that is very romantic.
25:21And a whisper from over to my right,
25:23Courant is also another brilliant eight,
25:25and that's a 16th century court dance.
25:27But with nocturne, spelt like that,
25:29with a dazio, it's like classic FM today.
25:33Let's then, Dexter New Corner,
25:35Origins Awards, first of the week from Susie.
25:38Well, I am going to rely heavily on our wonderful viewers
25:40who have been sending in some brilliant queries by email,
25:45and they're so lovely to get,
25:47so please do keep them coming.
25:48This one is from Diana Timmons, who says,
25:51All my life, I'm in my 80s, I've heard the phrase,
25:54he could talk the hind leg off a donkey,
25:56but where does it come from?
25:59Now, we've all met someone who talks so incessantly
26:01that they exhaust our patience and that of every listener,
26:05or viewer, possibly.
26:07Not looking at you, Colin.
26:08And we have been describing these individuals
26:11as talking the hind leg off a donkey for a long time,
26:14since the 1800s.
26:15But donkeys are far from the only animals
26:18that have lost a leg in the process.
26:20So the original expression actually involved horses.
26:23Our first record is from 1808,
26:25and Cobbett's Weekly Political Register.
26:28And here you'll read how the old vulgar hyperbole
26:31of talking a horse's hind leg off
26:33will find its verification in the American Congress.
26:36Some may say nothing has changed since in politics.
26:39Dogs also got a look in for a while,
26:42and it wasn't until the end of that century
26:44that things settled firmly on the poor donkey.
26:47But in each of them, the very fanciful suggestion
26:50is simply that endless chatter will exhaust even an animal
26:55and cause them to collapse with boredom
26:57and possibly sit down on their rear end.
26:59So they literally have no legs to stand on at all.
27:02And it might indeed seem as though the talker will go on
27:05for donkey's ears,
27:07which is another pun involving that lovely animal.
27:09It's actually a pun on donkey's ears,
27:11because donkey's ears, of course, are quite long.
27:14And it may be reinforced by the idea
27:17that donkeys live a long time,
27:18and it's possibly that that also inspired the word yonks.
27:22Yonks from donkey's ears.
27:24Lovely. Thank you.
27:26APPLAUSE
27:26Four rounds to go.
27:29Really looking forward to this, Julian.
27:30Great showing so far, and it's your letters.
27:33A consonant, please, Rachel.
27:35Thank you, Julian.

28:43Helen?
28:44A seven.
28:45Well, there you go.
28:46Absolute nails today.
28:48Right, Julian, what's the seven?
28:49Er, courted.
28:50Yes, and for you, Helen?
28:52Curated.
28:53OK, curated, courted, Q-U-A-R-T-E-D.
28:58Yeah, it was the first thing I looked up,
28:59and unfortunately not there, just court as a noun,
29:02unit of capacity, et cetera,
29:03but not there as a verbal adjective.
29:05Sorry, Julian.
29:06Any luck, Levi?
29:07Yeah, couldn't better that, but racket.
29:11Racket, yeah.
29:12Yes, you can spell it.
29:13C-Q-U-E-T.
29:14There you go.
29:15Yeah.
29:1676.53.
29:17Last letters round.
29:19Helen, who's been pushed today,
29:21really has been pushed, not quite at the finish line.
29:23Consonant, please, Rachel.
29:24Thank you, Helen.
29:25L.
29:26And another.

29:53And a vowel.
30:06And a vowel.
30:09And a vowel.
30:11MUSIC
30:24All right, that's time up. And Helen?
30:26I'll try an eight. Julian? Oh, I've got an eight as well.
30:29OK, let's see if it's the same word. Helen?
30:31Hallowed. Hallowed. And for you, Julian?
30:34With the F, fallowed. Hallowed and fallowed?
30:36I'm pleased to say they're both in the dictionary. Yeah, well done.
30:39APPLAUSE
30:41Well, that means it's the hallowed turf of victory for Helen.
30:44And despite an amazing performance from Julian,
30:47it's the fallow field of defeat.
30:50Can we add anything there, Levi? It's the best.
30:53No, not at all, Colin. I think those are really good. Excellent.
30:56Right, Julian, you've been flying on the numbers.
30:58Let's keep that going and get our final numbers of the day.
31:00OK, we'll go three big, three small, please.
31:03Three big ones, three little, the lesser chosen.
31:07Final numbers of the day.
31:08Two.
31:09Six.
31:10Two.
31:11Twenty-five.
31:12One hundred.
31:13And seventy-five.
31:15And the target.
31:16Six hundred and seventy-two.
31:17Six-seven-two numbers up.
31:19Avengers on.
31:356-7-2, the target. Julian?
31:536-7-3.
31:546-7-3, one away. And Helen?
31:576-7-3.
31:58One away as well. All right, Julian, I think we all know how you're getting there, but let's hear it.
32:02100 multiplied by 6.
32:03600.
32:04Add 75 and take the two.
32:06Yep, that gets you to a one away with not much effort.
32:09Yeah, what's the odds, Helen's the same.
32:10Exactly the same.
32:11Yeah, pass it over. Well done.
32:137 points each, and I think they probably speak for at least 90% of the nation who spent 28 seconds after that just pulling their hair out.
32:22Well, this one's divisible by 6, so if you see that, then you can say 75 divided by 25 is 3, times 2 is 6, times the other 2 is 12.
32:31Add on the 100 for 112, and times it by 6.
32:35Nice.
32:366-7-2.
32:396-7-2. That's how you get 10 points.
32:42But can our champion, Helen, get a century to cap off a second win?
32:47She's on 91 points.
32:49Julian is on 68.
32:51A mama score to lose on, and you can make it 78.
32:54If you can get this countdown conundrum.
32:58We'll see you next time.
33:27Goodness me, time is up.
33:31You know when you say a word and it's not that word
33:34and then you can't get it out of your head after that?
33:36Once I saw a thermometer, that was it.
33:40And what was worse?
33:42Was Rachel got it in a second?
33:44What is it?
33:45Motorhome.
33:46Let's have a look.
33:48Excellent.
33:51It matters not, Helen.
33:52You've got your second win.
33:53We'll see you back here tomorrow.
33:55And not for the first time in this series.
33:57By the way, it's been a strange series for you.
33:59Actually, Julian, I feel like a lot of would-be champions
34:02are running into very, very good adversaries.
34:06So, a bit frustrating for you today, but hopefully you enjoyed.
34:08I did, yes, very much so.
34:10Good to have you.
34:11Thank you so much.
34:12Levi, we'll see you here tomorrow, Doctor Doctor.
34:15Absolutely.
34:16And you, Susie.
34:17Yes, see you then.
34:18And as we leave, goodbye.
34:19Ant is probably meeting Dick down the pub for a swift half on his birthday.
34:23I'll leave you with this.
34:24Ant and Dick so famous that that's trademarked now.
34:27The phrase Ant and Dick is trademarked.
34:30Right, back tomorrow.
34:31Rachel, Susie and I, same time, same place.
