00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown on Thursday, March the 14th, the third month, the 14th day.
00:38We said every year it's Pi Day 3.14.
00:42It's also today International Day of Mathematics, which is like Christmas Day for maths geeks.
00:49So very happy at Rachel Riley today. How are you?
00:52I didn't get any presents. You didn't cook me anything. You didn't even cook a pie.
00:57Hi, Colin. Who would come down your chimney? Pythagoras.
01:01That's a good question, actually. I'll take Hannah Fry.
01:04Listen, I want to talk to you about lucky numbers as it's, you know, International Day of Mathematics.
01:08As it's International Day of Maths, you're going to talk about pseudoscience.
01:11Yeah. Do you have a lucky number as, you know, as a mathematician? Do you have a lucky number?
01:17Man United fans have to pick seven. Well, the reason why seven is lucky number seven comes from seven wonders of the world, etc., etc., sort of seventh heaven.
01:27And it all ties into that. That's why seven's lucky. 13's a baffling one, right? So it's the unluckiest number.
01:33Now, in other countries, it's considered lucky, by the way. This is just very much here.
01:37But 80% of buildings don't have a 13. They reckon on Friday the 13th in America, the American economy loses a billion dollars on Friday the 13th.
01:50But, you know, I don't buy into it either.
01:52I mean, I quite like a prime number. Depends what, you know, context you're talking. It's like choosing your favourite food.
01:57Yeah. Depends what mood you're in.
01:58Yeah. Bit of fun, but a lot of nonsense. Let's just say that. Well, you'll deal with the real numbers today.
02:04The important numbers and the letters are all yours. Our J of the D, Susie Dent.
02:09And what a delight to have Rick Edwards back in Dixstreet Corner.
02:14Lucky number?
02:16Um, I don't know if I've got a lucky number. I did once memorise pi to 100 decimal places because I am fun.
02:22Well, Lucas Glanville is our young champion, just 23 years old, currently at university in Edinburgh, averaging over 100 so far.
02:34How are you today, sir?
02:36Very well, thank you. Happy to be back.
02:37There's a lot of big things I'm sure we're going to get a chance to talk about, but just this strange thing.
02:43Got to be careful of brand names, but you've never drank that hugely globally popular soft drink.
02:51The one starting with C, I've never tried of any brand or added sugar content, no.
02:56Because I was very scared of it as a child and the way it looks.
02:59And while that's abated with age, it's sort of reached the point where I stubbornly might as well never try it.
03:04It's a strange thing they've never tried, but why not? Why not keep it going for as long as you can?
03:08All right. Well, Lucas Glanville then, a twice champion, looking for a hat-trick and going against Keith Gorst,
03:14who lives in Wakefield, but he's a Leeds man, born and bred. How are you today?
03:17I'm fine, thank you. Yeah, fine.
03:18So who's caused you the most hurt? You're United or you're Rhinos?
03:22Because I know you like your rugby league and your football.
03:24Recently, it's probably United. Rhinos are pretty consistent up to the last couple of years, yeah.
03:30Yeah, I mean, you picked up a Challenge Cup recently, but there was that period this century where I remember you winning everything, right?
03:36Five or six league titles out of seven or eight. It was big.
03:40Well, I spent most of my time in Manchester at the Grand Finals, yeah.
03:43Yeah, sensational.
03:44Oh, it was a good few years. Right, you will not need luck today, just try your best.
03:49OK, all right, good luck to Keith and Lucas.
03:53Lucas, let us please.
03:55Good afternoon, Rachel.
03:55Afternoon, Lucas.
03:56May I start with a consonant, please?
03:58You may indeed. Start with T.

04:56Lucas? Seven. Seven for you. Keith? Seven. Well done. Lucas?
05:01Lament. Keith? Mentals. Mentals and laments.
05:05OK with mentals? Mental pluralised?
05:08Er, no. Not there is a noun on its own, I'm afraid.
05:12Just there is an adjective. OK, Lucas gets the seven points in.
05:16Anything else? Yeah, I had laments, mantals. Yeah.
05:19There you go. Keith, more letters.

06:35That's six each. How do you get on, Rick? I've got a seven. Spicule?
06:40It's something which is sort of needle-shaped, such as a fine particle of ice, which is quite nice.
06:45Well spotted. But there is an eight. Nothing to do with me.
06:51Not too far of spicule, but very different meaning. Piculets. Piculets.
06:55Piculets are tiny tropical woodpeckers. Oh, nice. I want to look that up immediately.
07:00I will do during the break. Piculets. Piculets. Beautiful word. Thank you very much for that, Susie.
07:05And Keith, off the mark. Excellent stuff. 13. Six. First numbers round. And it's you, Lucas.

10:10The five is?
10:12Brine. Oh, Keith, what are you chancing here?
10:15Pruline.
10:17That's proline with a U instead of an O.
10:20Pruline...
10:22I think we add her in Dictionary Corner.
10:24Not fair.
10:26Proline, not pruline. I'm so sorry.
10:28OK, anything else?
10:30Lupine for six.
10:32That's about it.
10:34Fairly uneventful.
10:36Let's go round again. Lucas Glanville.

10:40Thank you, Lucas. D.
10:42And a vowel.

11:30ORCHESTRAL MUSIC
11:38Interesting, interesting. Lucas?
11:41Seven. Seven for you. And Keith?
11:43Seven. Yes. Lucas?
11:45Amnesia. Amnesia. Keith?
11:48Amnesia. Yeah, show them.
11:50That's good. Dexter in your corner, what do you have?
11:53Well, Lucas is kicking himself, cos he's realised what he could have done.
11:57Pop a C on the end. Amnesiac.
11:59Ah, brilliant. A missed opportunity.
12:02Could have popped a C on. Both of you didn't do that,
12:05so let's get back to the numbers. Keith, your choosing.
12:07Could I just have one from the top and any of the five, please?
12:10You can indeed. One from the top and five.
12:12It'll come in up to you, Keith.
12:14And this time the selection is four, seven, eight, four, one and 75.
12:22And the target, 483. 483, numbers up.
12:26What's up?
12:27What's up?
12:29That's three.
12:32What's up?
12:37What's up?
12:464-8-3, the target. Keith?
13:00No, I messed up on that one, sorry.
13:01Messed up on that one, don't worry. Lucas?
13:034-8-2.
13:05And one away. OK, let's have it for seven points.
13:087-1 is 6.
13:11Times 75.
13:13450.
13:148 times 4 is 32.
13:16Another one.
13:19One away.
13:20All right, one away. A good seven points there.
13:22What about a magnificent ten? How do we get?
13:24What's your favourite number, Colin?
13:26It's a seven, let's do it.
13:27It's a lucky number seven.
13:28Yes, talk to me.
13:29If you say 8 divided by 4 is 2,
13:33add it to the second 4 for 6,
13:3575 minus 6 is 69,
13:38and 69 times 7 is 483.
13:41Yes.
13:44Does not get that in the nut.
13:45Thank you very much, Rachel.
13:4742 plays 23.
13:48I like Keith's style, though.
13:50Quite a risky player, isn't he?
13:51So, a lot of road left as we take a little break.
13:54Now, if you watched yesterday's Countdown,
13:56you'll obviously remember Rick Edwards' coin-tossing story
14:00for all the wrong reasons.
14:02I feel like redemption today.
14:05That's the word.
14:05That's the word of the day.
14:06Redemption.
14:07What have you got for me, Rick?
14:08So, I'm really trying to pull out the stops here.
14:10I was confident you were going to like the coin stuff yesterday,
14:12so I don't know.
14:14So, this is all about being sort of scientifically,
14:17and more generally, just open-minded.
14:19So, open-minded to new ideas and new thoughts
14:23and new explanations of the world that we live in.
14:26And it's quite a hard thing to do.
14:28And there's a really good Schopenhauer quote about this.
14:31So, he says,
14:31Now, I'm not saying that what I'm about to tell you is true.
14:42I am saying that the logic is really interesting.
14:45Yeah.
14:45And no-one, as yet, has ever demonstrated that it isn't correct.
14:50So, it's sort of out there.
14:52So, in 2013, a geneticist called Eugene McCarthy wrote this up.
14:57And I've read the paper, and it's brilliant,
15:00and it really wound a lot of people up.
15:02And so, he said,
15:03And so, he says,
15:07And so, he says,
15:11OK, so, we're most similar to chimps.
15:13Everyone kind of agrees with that.
15:16But when you look at humans versus all the other primates,
15:19and you look for the features that are uniquely human.
15:22So, they're things like,
15:23We're hairless, none of the other primates are.
15:25Our silly little cartilaginous noses that poke out,
15:29that none of the other primates have.
15:30There's a sort of thin layer of fat under all of our skin.
15:33That's unique to us.
15:34And there's a whole raft of these features.
15:38And Eugene McCarthy just says,
15:40Well, you're looking for an animal
15:42that has all of these features,
15:44and that animal is the pig.
15:46So, he's saying,
15:47he thinks it's possible
15:48that an ancestor of a chimp
15:51and a pig produced humans.
15:53Yes.
15:53And it really winds people up.
15:55Yes.
15:55And I really like it.
15:57I like the fact it winds people up.
15:58Also, it's just a creative conversation, isn't it?
16:01Exactly.
16:01And it gets us to think about our characteristics a bit more.
16:04And then when you really look at a pig's eye as well,
16:07quite a human-like eye.
16:08It'll stick with you, that one, I think.
16:10Redemption is yours.
16:11There, thank you.
16:12And I don't know how we're all going to carry you out
16:13shoulder high today, but we will.
16:15Lucas, get ready.
16:16He's going up on our shoulders.
16:17Well done.
16:2242.23.
16:23We're back to the letters.
16:25And it's on you, champ.
16:26May I start with a consonant, please?
16:28Thank you, Lucas.
16:29F.
16:30And a vowel.
16:31And a final, I.
16:53And here we go again.
17:25Time's up.
17:25Pens down.
17:26Lucas?
17:27Five.
17:28And Keith?
17:28Five.
17:29Five.
17:29Not risking something, no?
17:31No.
17:32Lucas, the five?
17:33Find.
17:34And Keith?
17:35Sandy.
17:35And Sandy.
17:37Lucas would be the best countdown player ever
17:40if the clock was 35 seconds,
17:42because every time he announces a word,
17:43he then goes,
17:44Oh, damn it, I've missed something.
17:45What do you miss this time?
17:47Fiends for six.
17:48Told you.
17:49So apart from Fiends,
17:51what do you got too late?
17:52What do we got?
17:53I think we can get a seven.
17:54Anodise.
17:55Well spotted.
17:56Yes.
17:56To cover with a protective oxide layer.
18:01Keith.
18:01Nine's lucky number.
18:03Let's go.
18:04Right, can I have a consonant, please?
18:05Thank you, Keith.
18:06And a final vowel, please.
18:17And a final vowel, please.
18:31And a final E.
18:34And start the clock.
18:55KEITH
19:05Keith, how many?
19:06A risky seven.
19:07A risky seven.
19:08And Lucas?
19:09Seven.
19:10What's risky, Keith?
19:12Un-sweet.
19:13Un-sweet.
19:15Lucas?
19:16Neuters.
19:17Neuters and un-sweet.
19:19Not un-sweet, but un-sweet.
19:21Un-sweet.
19:22Yes, un-sweetened is in the dictionary, but not un-sweet, I'm afraid.
19:27OK, so Neuters for seven takes the points.
19:30Do you want to add anything else in there, Rick Edwards?
19:33Can't beat seven.
19:34Western.
19:35Yeah?
19:36Yeah, townies with a double E.
19:38I thought you might add snouter, which is a whole load of animals.
19:42I wonder, is a tap here a snouter, actually?
19:44You were talking about them the other day.
19:46It's not in the dictionary, snouter.
19:47No, you're kidding me.
19:48No.
19:49Do you play past the pigs at that game?
19:50Yeah.
19:51You get a snouter.
19:52You've not played that game?
19:53No.
19:54Tiny little pig figurines.
19:56You throw them up and how they land determines how much you score.
20:00The best, of course, is a leaning jowler.
20:02Do you know this, Susie?
20:04Yeah, yeah.
20:05You're winding me up.
20:06I didn't know the lexicon was.
20:07No, that doesn't exist.
20:08That does not exist.
20:09You two are winding me up.
20:10I know when I'm being taken for a ride.
20:11No.
20:12They do handstands.
20:13You like board games and you don't know past the pigs.
20:15Past the pigs is a classic, mate.
20:16You're all absolutely lying to me.
20:17Yeah.
20:18No.
20:19I'm not having it.
20:20I'm not having it.
20:21Lucas, endless madness and give me some numbers.
20:23Two large, please.
20:24Thank you, Lucas.

26:01The Full Monty.
26:03So Full Monty, obviously, a famous film.
26:06When it comes to the origin,
26:08a lot of people think it goes back to Field Marshal Montgomery,
26:11nicknamed Monty,
26:12who was said to have started every day with a full breakfast
26:14before, you know, fighting in the African desert
26:19in the Second World War.
26:20More likely, actually, but still war-related,
26:23is Montague Burton, of Burton's fame,
26:26whose firm made a quarter of the British uniforms
26:28in the Second World War
26:29and also made the de-mob suits.
26:31And the idea was that the Full Monty
26:33was not just a two-piece suit,
26:35but it was a waistcoat as well and a spare pair of trousers.
26:38So that was the Full Monty.
26:39And finally, a tattoo.
26:42So the beat of the drum at night,
26:44the military tattoo, is from Dutch, actually.
26:47Tap-toe.
26:48Probably pronouncing that incorrectly.
26:50But that means turn off the taps,
26:52and it was referring to the barrels of beer
26:54from which they would be drinking at night.
26:55So if you turn them off,
26:56it is time, then, for the soldiers to retire.
27:00The other canister, too, that you have on the skin,
27:02that was first recorded by Captain Cook, actually,
27:04and it goes back to a Tahitian word, meaning a mark.
27:07Lovely.
27:08Thank you, Susie.
27:09APPLAUSE
27:10OK, Keith is on the march with that eight points.
27:15Just putting a little doubt in our champion Lucas's mind
27:18with four rounds left.
27:19And Keith, you're picking these letters.
27:21Can I have a consonant, please?
27:23Thank you, Keith.
27:24R.
27:25And another one, please.
27:27T.
27:28And another one.
27:30M.
27:32A vowel, please.
27:33U.
27:34And lastly, E.
27:52Let's play.
27:52Let's play.
28:22Keith? Six. And Lucas? Seven.
28:26Spotted a seven. Keith? Tedium.
28:29And the seven? Trimmed. Trimmed. Yes.
28:32Straightforward, nice and simple.
28:34Trimmed gets you seven of those eight points back.
28:36Well done, young man. Talk to me, Susie and Rick.
28:39Yeah, just trimmed here. Yeah. Done. Easy. Love it.
28:43Let's get our last letters round, and it's Lucas.
28:46May I start with the consonant, please? Thank you, Lucas. C.
28:50And a vowel. I. And a consonant. S. And a vowel. E. And a consonant. T.
29:00And a consonant. D. And a vowel. U. And a consonant. S. And a vowel, please.
29:12And a final. E. Last letters.
29:16And azess.
29:26And a vowel.
29:40Time's up, Lucas.
29:49Seven, not written down.
29:50Not written down for you, Keith.
29:51Seven.
29:53And you've written yours down.
29:53Lucas, you go first.
29:55Studies.
29:55Keith.
29:56Dissects.
29:57Over to Susie.
29:59Yes, so dissect is in, Keith, but not dissects,
30:02because dissect has a double S in the middle.
30:05So I can't allow it with the S at the end, which is really bad luck.
30:08Oh, well, no, it's got to play fair.
30:10Very good.
30:10So studies spotted.
30:12Lucas again.
30:1429 seconds in, he spotted that.
30:16Anything else, Rick?
30:18Yeah, we had dissects.
30:19We had seduces.
30:21Did you have an eight?
30:22There is side cuts, actually, which is not...
30:26You might think it's a cut of meat, but it's not.
30:28It's a curve in the side of a ski or snowboard,
30:31and it allows you to turn more smoothly.
30:33Right, yes, boarders know all about that.
30:35No worries at all, rad.
30:36No worries.
30:38No idea.
30:40Right, two rounds left.
30:4185, 43.
30:43Lucas, you're always there, thereabouts, the 100,
30:46which is sensational.
30:48Keith, you're picking the last numbers, mate.
30:49Can I have one from the top, please, and any other five?
30:52Thank you, Keith.
30:52One large and five little.
30:55Coming up, final numbers of the day are...
30:57Eight, ten, ten, three, five, and the large one, 50.
31:05And the target, 401.
31:08401, numbers up.
31:09...
31:10One gig...
31:22...
31:24...
31:25...
31:28KEITH
31:404-0-1
31:41And Lucas?
31:424-0-1
31:43Off you go, Mr Gorst
31:4450 times 8
31:45400
31:4610 divided by 10 is 1
31:48Lovely stuff
31:494-0-1
31:50Yes
31:51Same way, Lucas?
31:52Same way
31:55Well done
31:56Nice 10 points AC
31:59Keith, that's nice to get the half century up
32:01Well done to you, sir
32:02And you can still add to it
32:04Lucas, we were here yesterday
32:05You were on 95 today
32:06It was 94 yesterday
32:08You didn't manage to get that conundrum
32:10Or we'd be looking at a hat-trick of centuries
32:13So let's do it all again
32:14Lucas and Keith, fingers on the buzzers
32:16Let's reveal today's countdown conundrum
32:192-0-1
32:20It's okay
32:21Maybe you can use the album
32:22But you can never do it
32:23No I don't see
32:24The album
32:25It can be used
32:26But if you're not
32:29What the album
32:30Is instead the house
32:311 in the rain
32:332 in the rain
32:342 in the rain
32:354 or 3
32:362 in the rain
32:377,000
32:384 in the rain
32:392 in the rain
32:404 in the rain
32:415,5 in the rain
32:426,000
32:438,000
32:443,000
32:451 in the rain
32:4610,000
32:478,000
32:48It's time up yet again.
32:51The Countdown Conundrum has stumped both champion and challenger.
32:55Well, Rick Edwards yesterday pulled it out of the bag.
32:58It was sensational stuff.
33:00What about today?
33:01Staying in the bag today.
33:03Just in the bag and everyone's avoiding eye contact, so...
33:07Best I got is maths code.
33:08Yeah, once I saw match, I couldn't get away from that either.
33:11That can happen with them.
33:12All right, let's reveal the answer.
33:14Oh, for goodness sake.
33:16Oh, I can't stomach that.
33:17Ridiculous.
33:19Stomached for ten points at home.
33:20That might have been enough for you to beat Lucas.
33:22If it did, make sure you apply to come on Countdown.
33:25But unlucky, Keith.
33:27We can't go marching on together, but we send you back to Leeds.
33:30Of course, always will be the birthplace of Countdown.
33:32We send you back there with our love, mate.
33:34Thank you for being here.
33:35Well done.
33:36And Lucas, judging you by the highest of standards,
33:39I do think we've got an octo-champ in our midst here.
33:42But those conundrums so far, it's only one out of three.
33:45Yeah.
33:46I mean, yesterday's was impossible.
33:47I'm amazed Rick got it, so...
33:49Yeah.
33:50It's not impossible then, technically, was it?
33:51Well...
33:52Because Rick got it.
33:53Yeah.
33:54So, you know, just a little bit of improvement still,
33:56by your very high standard.
33:57Lovely stuff.
33:58We'll see you tomorrow, Lucas.
33:59You, Rick, and Susie as well.
34:00Thanks so much.
34:02All done, Rach.
34:03Happy mathematics stuff.
34:05Yeah, where's my cake?
34:06You'll get a cake on International Day of Mathematics.
34:10You'll get a pie.
34:12That's all you'll get.
34:13That's all you'll get.
