🎭 Car Show | Electric vs Petrol | Porsche Battle
Transkript
00:00This time, oh my gosh, we see if an EV Porsche can outdrive a V8 from the same maker.
00:11I genuinely think this is the best electric car on the planet.
00:15We put them head to head and find they go fast in very different ways.
00:19Oh, jeez, I thought we were on two wheels then.
00:23The team cast a collective BDI over the new C-Class Hybrid.
00:27How are we finding the ride?
00:28Very acceptable in the rear.
00:30Is the claimed 60-mile EV range good enough to get it to the top of the class?
00:36Emergency stop!
00:40I'm in Sweden, driving Volvo's offering to the future of trucking, an electric HGV.
00:47I feel really in control.
00:49What a lovely thing.
00:52And Sid goes so fast.
00:54He's speechless in Ariel's uncompromising new battery-powered hypercar.
01:06This is fifth gear.
01:08What would be the difference?
01:10They'll still be screaming.
01:11And squealing.
01:14Could you just slow down?
01:16And shouting.
01:17Stupid idea.
01:18I can't listen to this nonsense.
01:20But they'll also be this.
01:26The EV revolution is here.
01:29Put our electric vehicles right for you.
01:32What are the costs, choices and challenges?
01:36And how do they stack up against their petrol-powered rivals?
01:39We're here to tell you everything you need to know about the new automotive landscape.
01:45This is the future of driving.
01:48This is fifth gear recharged.
01:51Okay, like thousands of others, you want a four-seater Porsche.
02:02You really do.
02:03But the next step is not so much the what, it's the which.
02:08The Taycan Turbo S is generally accepted as the king EV, but its petrol-powered equivalent,
02:15and the Panamera will be on your list, too.
02:18With a starting price of ÂŁ142,100, this Panamera Turbo SE Hybrid Sport Turismo is a fraction more money than the Taycan Turbo S.
02:30So, they are both similarly priced and they have similar power.
02:33At least 700 horses.
02:35We are going to find out which car is best.
02:39First up, it's a road test.
02:41I'll be taking the reins in this one.
02:48Well, Bits, welcome to the Porsche Panamera Turbo SE Hybrid Sport Turismo.
02:58Not to 62.
03:00Yeah.
03:003.2 seconds.
03:01It's got 700 horsepower.
03:04Lovely.
03:05It's pretty potent.
03:06In 2030, when the sales of fossil-fueled cars are expected to stop,
03:11the e-hybrid won't even be on sale, but until then, it's a tempting package.
03:16So, what do we think about the interior?
03:19I am a big Porsche fan.
03:21I think that they just execute everything so beautifully, and this is no exception.
03:27Yeah, 100%.
03:28Everything's well laid out.
03:30Yeah.
03:30Even actually with the cluster here, you've got five dials, which is quite something to pack in.
03:35I love it about Porsches that they put the rev counter, smack bang, in the middle, because that's what you want.
03:40You're a driver.
03:41You want to know the revs.
03:42I'll tell you what is super impressive, this gearbox.
03:45So, it's eight speed.
03:46Yep.
03:46Can you feel that?
03:48No.
03:49I've just changed three gears.
03:52You can't even feel it.
03:54It is seamless.
03:56But what I quite like, it's in hybrid mode.
03:58You've got a button here on the dash, which, when you click it, you've got actually three modes within the hybrid.
04:05You've got e-hold, which holds the state of charge.
04:09So, you can use the electric later.
04:11Yeah.
04:11You've got e-charge, which just recharges the battery.
04:15And then you've got hybrid auto, which is Porsche's own strategy of using the two.
04:19So, you just click and away you go.
04:22Yeah.
04:22It's the efficient Porsche engineering at its best.
04:29Now, should we have a little play?
04:33Two lets.
04:34We're going to Sport Plus.
04:36Oh, yeah.
04:38Why am I loving this car so much, Karun?
04:41Because it sounds like a car.
04:43Yeah.
04:43And it feels like a Porsche.
04:45I could road trip to the south of France and not feel tired.
04:48With the kids.
04:48With the kids.
04:49Yeah.
04:49And not feel tired.
04:50It feels like a Porsche.
04:52Yeah.
04:52Absolutely.
04:53And sounds like a Porsche in Sport Plus mode.
04:55It does.
04:56Yeah.
04:56This is true.
04:57Oh, Karun, you're putting up a very good argument for this car.
05:01For the next eight years.
05:02I'm going to, yeah, exactly.
05:03I'm going to have to dig very deep to beat this.
05:07Luckily, I don't have just any old motor to take it on.
05:11The Taycan is the Lecky Porker that has reinvented the wheel.
05:15The EV wheel, that is.
05:17And it's a step into the future for Porsche with a totally different design language influenced
05:22by aerodynamics.
05:24Karun, may I introduce you to the Porsche Taycan Turbo S?
05:29That name makes no sense.
05:31Why?
05:32Shorter than yours.
05:33How could it be a Turbo S?
05:34It doesn't have an engine.
05:35Yeah, details, details, schmeetails.
05:37Anyway, what you really need to know is that this car is quicker to 62 miles an hour than
05:44yours.
05:452.8.
05:46Wow, 2.8.
05:49Yeah, you know what?
05:50I am a bit like you were conflicted in the Panamera.
05:53Oh, yeah?
05:54I am conflicted in this because I genuinely think this is the best electric car on the
06:00planet.
06:00I totally agree.
06:01Well, in which case, let's just wrap this all up now and I win.
06:04Yeah?
06:05It doesn't sound as nice as mine.
06:13You can mess about slightly with the settings of the noise.
06:21That's not too bad.
06:22It's not bad.
06:22I think it's a decent fake noise, isn't it?
06:25Slightly sort of Barry White level rather than a Kylie Minogue pitch.
06:29I like the fact that they bought into this minimalist electric revolution, if you like.
06:34The little gear stick there.
06:36Just a little lever.
06:38The dash, smaller.
06:40Yeah.
06:41And the power dial is in front of me like you had the rev counter.
06:47The one thing I will say, I'm not sure the seats are as comfy as the other one.
06:52I'm going to agree with you on that.
06:55It's just...
06:55There's something different.
06:56I don't know what it is because I would have thought they just have the same supplier.
07:00Yeah.
07:01I also don't think that the centre console is as user-friendly as the Panamera.
07:07Yeah.
07:07We're lacking a few actual physical buttons, aren't we?
07:10Yeah.
07:11Lacking buttons.
07:12I think it's just a little bit more fiddly on the touch screen.
07:18When it comes to styling, come on, my white wheels.
07:23Who's not to like them?
07:25Me.
07:25I don't like the white wheels.
07:27I just don't like it.
07:28Overall, I love the look of it.
07:30I think, you know, you look at it and go, it's a Porsche, but it looks different and distinct
07:36enough for it to be electric and, you know, something a bit different.
07:40Yeah.
07:41It catches your eye, doesn't it?
07:42Like, oh, wow, what's that?
07:43I think they've done a great job of the styling.
07:45I really think it's a great looking car.
07:47But a slight imitation.
07:49But a slightly less nice imitation.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Right, we need to sum up.
07:55Who's going to win?
07:56I've got great range and I'm quicker, but out on the road, I'm going to have to give it
08:03to the Panamera.
08:04I think the Panamera just edges it.
08:07Yeah.
08:08That's a winner then, isn't it?
08:09Yeah.
08:09Yeah, well done.
08:10Okay, round one to the Panamera.
08:12Mm-hmm.
08:12Splendid.
08:14We just missed the turnoff.
08:15Yeah.
08:17Rightio.
08:18So a brief drive, call it a road test, gives a victory to that four-litre bundle of excess
08:25they call the Panamera.
08:26But our test is multidimensional and this EV hybrid battle is far from over.
08:32You might find the next stage of our journey is pretty dramatic.
08:36So it's up to 100 and then braking.
08:39Stop.
08:39Now it's time to get a first look and first drive of a brand new EV.
08:47Yes, it's the fifth-year recharged team test.
08:54Today we tested the Mercedes-Benz C300E.
08:58This is a plug-in hybrid, so shorter trips can be completed on electric power alone.
09:06We have the AMG line specification, which is the cheapest model in the range.
09:11It costs ÂŁ46,310.
09:13It is a hybrid car and it can do between 65 and 70 miles on electric power alone.
09:24Which means this car is one of the best plug-in hybrids around when it comes to EV-only range.
09:30Which I think is pretty good and could be the sweet spot that most people need without even touching the two-litre petrol engine.
09:40How long to charge?
09:41Between 30 minutes and three hours, depending on what your charger is, which is pretty good.
09:45I'm just going to say this off the bat.
09:47I'm quite keen on this stylistically.
09:50Yeah, I mean, these wheels.
09:51No, I don't like that.
09:51They're tickling my fancy.
09:53No, that's too much there.
09:54That's too big.
09:55I like that because it's a little bit different.
09:56Do you like that?
09:57No.
09:57No, me neither.
09:58No, you don't like it?
09:58No, I like clean spokes.
10:00I like it even more now.
10:02Those wheels, they're going to be a definite point of controversy, but I like them.
10:07Tell me, you don't like these though, do you?
10:08I don't like those rear lights.
10:09They just look a bit strange to me, the way they kind of...
10:11I will agree with you on that.
10:13So there's a petrol engine, an electric motor and a battery and combined, that gives you 333 horsepower.
10:19I think that's AMG, like a coupe type look.
10:22I think that this is like, it's a bit SLS-y, isn't it?
10:25I think the front of the car is really aggressive and looks mean, actually, so I think the styling's good there.
10:31Right, well, I'm going in.
10:32I'm in the back, aren't I?
10:33You're in the back, son.
10:35Once you get in, it feels like a Merc.
10:38It's quality, it's comfortable.
10:39I like this shape that they've got here because they've added a bit of texture, some different materials.
10:46It's a really good-looking cockpit area.
10:48Yeah.
10:49This double-decker system is quite unusual.
10:51So, what's the Merc like when it's underway?
10:560-62, anyone?
10:58I know this.
10:58Yep.
10:596.1 seconds.
11:016.1 seconds.
11:02Oh, yeah.
11:03That's not bad.
11:04155 mile an hour top whack.
11:05How are we finding the right?
11:06It's sporty enough to tick my box.
11:09Very acceptable in the rear.
11:11Yeah.
11:11And it's not too noisy in the rear, either.
11:13Road noise.
11:14Who said that?
11:15Huh?
11:15Pardon?
11:15Hey, what, what?
11:16You forget he's there.
11:17It's quite pleasant.
11:19It's a good bit of kit.
11:21Which, to be fair, it needs to be because that's the best part of 50 grand.
11:25To put that in context, ÂŁ50,000 would buy Tesla's best-selling Model 3 with 270 miles of pure EV range.
11:35I have got one thing left.
11:37Okay.
11:38And we need to head to a track for this.
11:43Merc claims the C300e can drive 60 to 70 miles on EV only.
11:49This figure is based on an official test called the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure, or WLTP for short.
11:58However, that's conducted in lab conditions on a rolling road.
12:03So, we've come up with our own test that we think is far closer to real-world driving.
12:08The question is, with EV mode selected, will the car match the official range?
12:14Jimmy was our nominated real-world driver.
12:21Now, in here are some real-world tests, which I'm going to now hand over...
12:26No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
12:28What about the test announcer?
12:30Yes, and I'm stopwatch queen.
12:32Let's get a show on the road.
12:33Three, two, one, here we go.
12:35Accelerate to 30, and hold for 60 seconds.
12:39Oh, I'm going too fast.
12:40I'm way too fast.
12:41Steady.
12:41I'm off, I'm off.
12:42I'm breaking, we're going through the chicane, and...
12:4530, 30.
12:46You've dropped.
12:46I know, I've dropped.
12:47The pressure's on.
12:495, 4, 3...
12:51What are we doing? Stop in?
12:52Yes, please.
12:522, 1, and...
12:53Emergency stop!
12:56Jason and I were thoroughly, thoroughly entertained.
12:58Accelerate to 60 miles an hour as fast as possible.
13:01Now!
13:01Now!
13:02Go!
13:02Then what happens?
13:03I don't know!
13:04Oh, no!
13:0545, 50, 55, 60...
13:08Avoid hedgehog!
13:09What the...
13:10Very well!
13:11Okay, I avoided the hedgehog.
13:14Pull over to let emergency vehicle pass.
13:16Oh!
13:18And a minute.
13:18There it goes.
13:19Neenah, neenah, neenah, neenah.
13:20There it goes.
13:21Accelerate to 50 miles an hour, and hold for 60 seconds.
13:26Shut up.
13:26That's what it says.
13:28Now, you can do this at 50.
13:29I know you can.
13:29Come on.
13:30Come on.
13:30Come on.
13:30Are you f***ing me?
13:31Come on, come on, come on.
13:32Good, good.
13:33Yes, nice of you played.
13:345, 4, 3, 2, 1.
13:37Now what?
13:37Stop and perform a three-point turn.
13:39Oh!
13:41Right, reverse.
13:42My mouth dried up.
13:44Has it?
13:44Yeah.
13:45My mouth dried up.
13:46Accelerate to 40 miles per hour, and weave from side to side.
13:50Right, the 40.
13:52Yeah.
13:52And it's a gentle weave.
13:53Gentle weave.
13:54Nice.
13:54Okay, got to do that.
13:56For 60...
13:56I'm on it.
13:57I might be sick.
13:58Yeah.
13:58Three, two, one.
14:03Ferret!
14:03What?
14:05There he is, the little blighter.
14:07Hang on.
14:08I'm going to be honest, from my point of view, I think that went quite well.
14:12In the real world, we've done almost four miles.
14:16However, the car's computer was telling us that we'd used nine miles of range.
14:21No way.
14:22Really?
14:24The real world test was to see how far the Mercedes would actually go on battery only.
14:28It states around 65 to 70 miles.
14:30With me behind the wheel, we halved that.
14:33That's interesting, though, isn't it?
14:35I wonder how much that ferret manoeuvre cost us.
14:38I mean, that was a couple of miles there.
14:39I reckon, yeah.
14:40Yeah.
14:40In my, you know, 30 years on the road, in real world situations, I've never come across a ferret.
14:49So maybe that test was a little bit unfair.
14:52Okay, so our test wasn't quite as scientific as the official WLTP.
14:57And nowhere near as long.
14:59But it was probably a reasonable reflection of how people actually drive.
15:04So what would we score for the Mercedes C300e?
15:07I really want to give it a high score because I love the fact that it can do between 65 and
15:1470 miles on electric power alone.
15:16But in our real world test, it didn't achieve that.
15:21So I'm going to have to downgrade it a little bit.
15:23And I'm going to give it a 7.5.
15:29But from the boys' perspective, it seems the Merc's other attributes outweigh the range issue.
15:35Overall, I thought this Mercedes was a top-notch bit of engineering with a great set of figures
15:40surrounding it.
15:41So I'm giving it a wafting 9 out of 10.
15:44It's a big thumbs up for me.
15:46I like it.
15:47Apart from the rear.
15:48And on that basis, I'm going to give it a great score.
15:50I'm going to give it 8.
15:51Which gives the Mercedes C300e an impressive team test score of 24.5 out of 30.
16:02Coming up, my trip to Sweden to sample the rig of the future.
16:06A 300 grand EV truck.
16:08What sort of torque are we talking in this?
16:10Just 2,400 newton metres, really.
16:12Just, hang on, just that wall.
16:21This won't come as a huge shock.
16:30Trucks are big and thirsty, accounting for 70% of greenhouse gases in the UK, but only
16:355% of the miles driven on our roads.
16:38A big shake-up is planned for the sector, not unlike the one for cars.
16:43Yes, trucks have to go all-electric too.
16:46By 2040, HGVs will need to be zero emission.
16:50And smaller trucks will need to hit the same target five years earlier.
16:54So we've come all the way to Sweden to sample the future today.
16:58This EV rig is the Volvo FH.
17:02The FH weighs 40 tonnes fully loaded.
17:0640 tonnes!
17:08That's about 10-20% more than the current HGVs.
17:12So what?
17:13Well, in cars, the batteries are heavier than the engines they replace and usually account
17:18for a fifth of the total vehicle weight.
17:20By that maths, this thing should need eight tonnes of batteries to function.
17:25Oof!
17:28Right, first things first.
17:31It's very clean.
17:31It's very tidy.
17:32But there's one big thing missing and that's a gear stick.
17:35And normally in a truck, that's got loads of movement and it's kind of messy, but it's
17:38not here.
17:39But what there is, is a sea of buttons and two screens.
17:42Anyway, that's the technical stuff and I'll get onto that a little bit later because the
17:46thing that's immediately caught my eye is down here.
17:48I've got a fridge and cooler.
17:53And next to that, I've got a Volvo coffee machine.
17:59Put that away.
17:59What I also like is this steering wheel.
18:01It's got two different types of movement, which is done on a foot pedal.
18:05It's all on air.
18:07And just moving it is really light.
18:09I can pull it down and then when I release the pedal a little bit, I can then change the
18:12angle of the top there so I can really get a nice, comfortable seating position.
18:17But I tell you what, I'm also a little bit concerned because there's a sea of buttons.
18:20I can see there's what looks like a reverse button, a neutral button and an automatic button.
18:25So maybe that's in replacement of the gear stick.
18:28Volvo's Martin Tomlinson is going to help me navigate this thing before I actually drive
18:35it.
18:36I'll tell you what, Martin, I'm glad you're here.
18:39What's up?
18:40Well, I got in expecting a nice big gear lever.
18:43It's in these buttons here.
18:44It's all on the dash.
18:44But it is literally three buttons, reverse, neutral and automatic.
18:48Yeah, absolutely.
18:48Press A and away we go.
18:50Don't forget your seatbelt.
18:52Actually invented by the Volvo group.
18:55This is 40 tonnes.
18:56Well, it's 40 tonnes, yeah.
18:57Oh, what?
18:59Gliding away.
19:01Silent.
19:02You get in a big truck and the thing you're going to expect is honestly big chugging noises.
19:09Yeah.
19:09Wow.
19:10The refinement of this thing is unreal.
19:13Normally when we get a diesel truck back from a customer, you normally jump in it and the radio
19:18is usually on volume 25.
19:19Yeah, yeah.
19:20When you jump back in one of these, the volume is usually on about four or five.
19:23It's deadly quiet, isn't it?
19:26It's sort of spooky because this is, I mean, this is a big bit of kit.
19:29And it's got a me behind the wheel, which is slightly concerning.
19:33Oh.
19:33So this is a 12% climb, so don't be frightened to see what it'll do.
19:40It might not feel like we're going that quick, but we're actually moving 40 tonnes of weight
19:44up a 12% incline.
19:45I feel like we're going quite quick.
19:46I'm not going to lie to you.
19:47It's just how smooth and slightly.
19:50It's effortless.
19:52I'm on private land, but I'm still being careful as the FH costs 290 grand, at least 50% more
19:58than a diesel.
20:00I thought my knees were going to be knocking.
20:02I'm like, what is this going to be in control of?
20:04But it's straight away, I'm feeling really in control, just happy.
20:10Fantastic.
20:10What a lovely thing.
20:11So come on then, give me some facts and figures.
20:13So this has got the standard 12-gear gearbox automatic.
20:17Yeah, a 12-speed i-shift gearbox, which we fit as standard in all the heavy-duty trucks
20:20that we sell.
20:21But this, the electric motor version, uses the gearbox in a slightly different way.
20:24Yeah, it does.
20:25Because of the amount of torque that it's got, it pulls off in seventh, which is the lowest
20:29gear of the high range.
20:30It's the way you just casually go, yeah, it pulls off in seventh.
20:32I mean, if, you know, most things pull off in seventh, you're going to stall badly.
20:35What sort of torque are we talking in this?
20:37Just 2,400 newton metres, really.
20:40Just, hang on, just, whoa.
20:44Torque is a reflection of pulling power and engine flexibility.
20:48The Porsche Taycan, one of the fastest road cars we've ever driven, has 1,000 newton metres
20:53of torque.
20:54This truck has two and a half times that.
20:56So, this being an EV, I've been kind of concerned because to get any kind of range on here, surely
21:05you're going to need several shed loads of batteries.
21:07I mean, if you're going by the 20% rule, this is going to need nearly eight tonnes of batteries
21:12and those kind of figures scare me.
21:14So, what has this got to make it go?
21:17Yeah, so this one's got the maximum amount of batteries you can have on this particular
21:20model, which is six.
21:21Each of those batteries only weighs 520 kilograms each.
21:25All right, so I've got about three tonnes.
21:26Yeah, a tonne and a half on each side, three tonnes in total.
21:28So, that's not too shocking.
21:29No, not too.
21:30It's not my eight tonnes, which have my knees a knock.
21:32No, nowhere near eight tonnes.
21:35The big question, what kind of range can I be expecting?
21:38So, with six batteries, this truck will do around about 300 kilometres.
21:41300 kilometres.
21:42On a full charger.
21:43Somewhere just over 200 miles on one charge.
21:45Absolutely, yeah.
21:46Hmm, that's only a third of a fully-fueled diesel, but EVs for now will always be second-best
21:53for range.
21:53But fast rechargers will help, and surely other EV aspects, like brake regeneration, will
21:59be a key factor.
22:01Obviously, I've got a big weight now, so the opportunity for regen has got to be big, hasn't
22:06it?
22:06Absolutely, it's massive, yeah.
22:07So, my foot's off the brake now.
22:09We're going down this hill.
22:09So, we're going down a 16% hill.
22:12Yeah.
22:12So, at this point in time, because you've now come off, as soon as you come off the throttle
22:16or brake, you've got three motors constantly regenerating the batteries, so there's a huge
22:21amount of power going back in there constantly.
22:23About three tonnes, there's got to be some big charging times involved in getting this
22:27thing back up to charge.
22:29So, if you've got a 22-kilowatt charger, it'll charge overnight in around 10 hours.
22:33Yeah.
22:34If you've got a 350-kilowatt charger, which this truck can charge at, then obviously, we're
22:39talking a couple of hours, so it makes all the difference depending on the...
22:42batteries and, of course, the size of the charger you're using.
22:47Currently, there are five EV trucks in the range, and they won't be suitable for all
22:51jobs.
22:52They're designed to accommodate half the market in terms of size and load.
22:56But, crucially, are they going to make a difference to the planet?
23:01Well, it should.
23:03Even though manufacturing the batteries of an EV truck creates more CO2 than making a diesel
23:07engine, in use, these trucks only consume half the energy needed over a 200-mile drive and
23:13keep the air free of soot.
23:15Think of the difference that will make over the years.
23:18And if the batteries are disposed of in a sustainable way, that will make even more sense.
23:23Let's just hope our roads can manage the massive tonnage.
23:27We'll just have to wait and see.
23:32After the break, Vicky tries to push the Taycan ahead of the Panamera.
23:36Oh, my gosh.
23:37As we ask if EV power is now better than petrol.
23:41Braking.
23:43And Sid gets behind the wheel of a car that might just be the fastest accelerating EV in
23:49the world.
23:50OK.
23:51Wow.
24:03In case you are making a cup of tea or just weren't concentrating earlier, we're trying
24:07to split the ÂŁ140,000 Performance Kings that are the Porsche Taycan and Panamera E-Hybrid.
24:15Welcome back to our battle between a high-end hybrid and its state-of-the-art electric stablemate.
24:24Karin, you have got a...
24:26Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo.
24:31Easy for you to say.
24:32I have got a Taycan Turbo S.
24:35I think a Porsche will win.
24:37Well, so far on the road test, we've seen that actually the Panamera did win round one
24:41with better interiors and just a bit more comfort on the road.
24:46OK, it is now time to get serious.
24:48We want to see the power of these cars.
24:51It's time for a 0-100 to 0 test.
24:56This is the bit where we say, don't try this at home.
24:59But we'll try it because it tells us the sheer stop and go.
25:02And performance cars like this must do both very quickly.
25:06This test is pretty much the only way we'll be able to separate the ultra-fast from the slightly less fast.
25:13Karin is up fast.
25:15The Panamera Turbo has got an incredible amount of power.
25:19It's got a four-litre V8 engine, which does 571 horsepower out of that.
25:25And on top, of course, you've got the hybrid electric, which brings the total up to 700 horsepower.
25:32Now, I've also got four-wheel drive.
25:34So clearly off the line, it should be pretty good.
25:37But the Taycan has also got that.
25:40So we'll have to see. I think I could be in trouble here because the power delivery of the EV will give the Taycan and Vicky a bit of an advantage.
25:49But let's see what happens.
25:53Hello there, VBH. Right, I'm at the start line.
25:56I'm going into Sport Plus mode.
25:58Let's see what we can do.
26:01OK, launch control on and then I'm going to count them down.
26:05Let's see if an ex-F1 driver can extract something special.
26:08Three, two, one, go!
26:12Right, let's see when we get up to 100.
26:15This thing is so quick off the line.
26:19So it's up to 100 and then braking.
26:22Stop it!
26:23OK.
26:25That was a decent effort. I was pretty happy with that.
26:28A traffic cone is placed to mark the end of the go and stop challenge.
26:36Only high-tech stuff on this show.
26:38Right. I'm pretty pleased with that. That launch control is seriously impressive.
26:43Oh my God. And the noise as well. You gave a nice burble along. It's very good.
26:47You're just being nice to me because you know you're going to win.
26:50I am because I don't think you've got any chance. Bye.
26:55Allow me to demonstrate.
26:57Well, my friend, this is where you get to see the true advantage of an electric car.
27:05To start with, yes, I do have 61 horsepower more than you. I've got 761.
27:10But my pièce de la résistance comes with torque.
27:16With an electric car, you get 100% of the torque from the moment you hit the throttle.
27:22Boom!
27:24Otherwise known as software that maximizes grip and power.
27:29I'd best back it up now, wouldn't I?
27:32In theory, this should be a no-brainer for her, really.
27:35The car's way about the same. They've got similar amounts of power.
27:40If anything, the Taycan's got a bit more.
27:43And the power delivery of an EV off the line is going to be better.
27:48So, in theory, this should be a no-brainer for her.
27:52Hello. Are you ready to go?
27:54Right. I'm just going to put it in launch control.
27:55So the next time you speak, count me down, okay?
27:59Okay. Three, two, one, go.
28:05Oh! Oh my gosh!
28:08I've done this before. Oh!
28:13That's ridiculous.
28:14That is the second time.
28:16I have no way!
28:17You got to 100 there.
28:18Yeah. Yeah.
28:20I feel even more like my soul has been sucked out than the first time I ever did it.
28:27It's when I tested this car over a year ago.
28:29Did you really get to 100?
28:31I am actually in shock.
28:38It happened so quickly the first time.
28:40Let's look again.
28:41How is this possible? I mean, genuinely.
28:50Honestly, this is the second time I've ever, ever done a launch control in this car and it never ceases to almost render me speechless.
28:59It's crazy. And also pretty conclusive, I feel.
29:04I think so.
29:05I think so too.
29:07Vix, before you, I want to have a go.
29:08You need to.
29:09You go have a lie down.
29:10You need to.
29:11And I feel like I need to experience this.
29:12You really do.
29:14I don't want to come with you.
29:15Are you sure?
29:16No.
29:17I feel like I need to try this.
29:20It goes against our normal rules, but the Taikan experience needs to be shared.
29:25Right.
29:26Clear the track.
29:43It's bonkers.
29:44It's just ridiculously insane.
29:48The first 0-60 is like any race car I've ever driven in my life.
29:54How does it compare to a Formula One car?
29:56Well, you don't have the wheelspin because of the four wheel drive.
29:59And you're not having to manage the slip.
30:02The launch is just incredible.
30:04I felt like I was in a race car.
30:06That's extraordinary.
30:07I know. It's amazing.
30:08Amazing.
30:09A clear winner for this.
30:10Clear winner.
30:11Well, there you go.
30:12The Panamera was truly beaten, but it's won all so far.
30:17Later, we have the final test to split the V8 hybrid from the EV Newbie.
30:22The corner mix.
30:24Oh, let's get on the brakes.
30:29The Aerial Atom.
30:31You probably know the story.
30:32It was designed by a student in Coventry, built in a shed in Somerset,
30:36and despite not being much more than a small engine surrounded by scaffolding,
30:41we think it's one of the finest bits of engineering out there, and it's always blown our socks off.
30:46A little bit aggressive in the roundabout, but he's able to balance it really well on the throttle.
30:53It's almost as quick to 60 as a Bugatti Veyron, at just 3% of the price.
30:58But it's petrol-powered.
30:59So, Aerial wanted to create an EV, but not just any old EV.
31:11I mean, look, it's a Batmobile, isn't it?
31:15And it's got Batman's ears, and Batman's menacing stare.
31:18Drive this down the road, and everything in front of you will scatter.
31:23This is the Aerial Hypercar.
31:25That's hyper with an I, not a Y.
31:28Which stands for High Performance Carbon Reduction.
31:31And while you might want to wear a motorcycle helmet and leathers to drive the Atom, this, you'd want to wear a cape.
31:38We're used to supercar manufacturers creating stunning designs, but there's absolutely nothing like this one.
31:45And if you think these winglets, scoops, and spoilers are all for show, well, think again.
31:50Every single angle of this car has a purpose.
31:53The fins on the front wings reduce drag caused by the mirrors, and the ones at the rear aid stability in cornering.
32:00Good news for me, as my reputation is going bonkers in bonkers cars.
32:10Now, obviously, something that can accelerate quicker than an F1 car is going to make quite a dim when it starts up.
32:16So, cover your ears.
32:18Ah, it's that lack of EV sound joke. Very funny.
32:25Now, this is only a prototype, so we can't say it's the quickest production car in the world yet.
32:31But it's seriously rapid.
32:33With a 0-62 time of 2 seconds, and 60-120 mph in 3.5.
32:39This car is four-wheel drive, and each wheel has an electric motor.
32:44So, that gives me 300 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque times four.
32:50Which means that I've got just shy of 1,200 horsepower.
32:54Those are figures that you can't really get your head around.
32:59So, what's this aerial hypercar like on the road?
33:03Well, it feels raw like all aerials.
33:08However, it does have some creature comforts.
33:11For starters, it's the first aerial to have a door.
33:16It's also the first aerial to have a windscreen and a windscreen wipe-up.
33:21It's also the first aerial to have a heater.
33:23I know this sounds pretty normal, but for a company that's just been making frameless cars with wheels on them, it's pretty luxurious.
33:34Thanks to an aluminium chassis and carbon fibre body panels, this weighs just 1,500 kilograms.
33:42Now, to put it into perspective, this is lighter than a petrol-powered Porsche 911 Carrera, but has three times more power.
33:52It's whining, it almost sounds like an RC car. It's really, really cool.
34:02You've got to be careful when you put your foot down, because even though it's really exciting, you will, well, if you're not too careful, you will get locked up for sure.
34:16There's no way I'm testing a car like this on the road with a 40-mile-an-hour speed limit, so Ariel has kindly found me a disused airfield near their base.
34:25The battery range isn't confirmed yet, but I'm told even if I used a loud pedal, I should have enough runs to really sample the hypercar.
34:34I'm just going to pull over and give it a launch.
34:48Ready for this?
34:51Whoa!
34:52Whoa!
34:53Whoa!
34:54Whoa!
34:55Whoa!
34:56Whoa!
34:57Whoa!
34:58Whoa!
34:59Whoa!
35:00Whoa!
35:01Whoa!
35:02Whoa!
35:03Whoa!
35:04Whoa!
35:05Whoa!
35:06Whoa!
35:07Whoa!
35:08That is unreal.
35:09The rush is unlike anything.
35:11Now bearing in mind, it is a prototype car, so obviously I can't give it the full review because it's not quite finished, but oh my goodness.
35:24And in terms of driving modes, on the steering wheel I've got Serious Fun Sport and Eco.
35:31Sport mode activated, so let's see what it does.
35:34Whoa!
35:35Whoa!
35:36Whoa!
35:37Whoa!
35:38Whoa!
35:39Whoa!
35:40Whoa!
35:41Whoa!
35:42Whoa!
35:43Whoa!
35:44Whoa!
35:45Whoa!
35:46That is unreal.
35:47That is just...
35:48That is just nuts.
35:49Whoa!
35:50You've got to go back.
35:51Now it has got traction control, but I have been told that it doesn't function in Eco mode, but even in Eco mode.
36:01Das ist verrĂĽckt!
36:06Das ist verrĂĽckt!
36:09Der Steering ist ein E-Pass-System.
36:12Ich werde das wieder tun.
36:14Das ist ähnlich wie etwas anderes.
36:28Ich kann es nicht mehr so sagen.
36:31Das ist so additiv.
36:33Ich meine, hier wir gehen.
36:36Und dann ist ein Rutsch.
36:43Das ist so schön!
36:45Oh mein Gott!
36:47The grip is phenomenal, it can go as fast around corners as it does in a straight line.
37:02Now, it can send all of its power to the rear, but then mid-corner it just wants to send power to the front.
37:11The steering is immediate and the fact that the batteries are on the floor.
37:17Driving the motors is a modest 62kWh battery.
37:24The modes aren't fully coded yet, but I'm told Sport gives you around 80% of the total
37:29power and Eco will limit the power and extend the range, but it's too early to get the full
37:34data on that.
37:37The way it gathers speed is ridiculous!
37:45A few runs later and my fantastic go was over.
37:48Was I happy?
37:49Yes.
37:50In fact, I'd like to put my name down for one and for a runway to drive it on.
37:54But unlike aerials of old, this one is not in the affordable category.
37:59When it eventually goes on sale, the hypercar will cost just shy of a million pounds, which
38:04is Bugatti Veyron money.
38:06Only a few will ever be made and sadly many of them will be tucked away in collectors'
38:10bat caves around the world.
38:12But let's hope that the odd fuel will put on the bat suit and go out and fight crime.
38:18Off the break, we see whether the Porsche Taycan really does have the power and poise to beat
38:27its more expensive brother, the V8 Panamera.
38:29We're back to split hairs, Porsche hairs.
38:47Are you better off with a V8 hybrid or an EV with similar figures?
38:53Ding ding, it's round three.
38:56Welcome back to the final part of our Porsche versus Porsche battle.
39:01Hybrid versus electric, Panamera versus Taycan both are top of the class cars, but which
39:07is better?
39:08On the road, the Panamera was the winner of round one.
39:12But in the zero to hundred to zero test, the Taycan was conclusively the winner of round
39:16two.
39:17Did you really get to a hundred?
39:19I am actually in shock.
39:22So it's all going to come down to this final test, a full lap of the circuit.
39:27A fast lap here is a great measure of handling power, braking and represents some real world
39:34agility that you might need for your performance four seater Porsche.
39:38First up, the Panamera.
39:39So this car has got a similar footprint, similar weight, similar power, similar price point
39:46to the Taycan.
39:47So it's over to you for a fast lap.
39:51I am in Sport Plus.
39:53Sport Plus.
39:54Are you ready with the stopwatch?
39:55Yes, I am.
39:56I'm ready with the stopwatch.
39:57Karan's F1 skills will push this Panamera to its limits around the track.
40:04You've got lovely brakes.
40:05They were very smooth.
40:06Right.
40:07See what?
40:08Given the weight, it does shift okay.
40:09Jeez, I thought we were on properly on two wheels then.
40:10The body moves a lot.
40:11It does, but it's also quite understeering if I'm honest.
40:13Do you feel the weight?
40:14It's a little bit lazy on the direction change.
40:15Now into the chicane.
40:16Hey, last corner.
40:17Get the loaded.
40:18Yes.
40:19Yes.
40:20Oh.
40:21Oh.
40:22Oh.
40:23Oh.
40:24Oh.
40:25Oh.
40:27Oh.
40:28Oh.
40:29Oh.
40:30Ohh.
40:35Oh.
40:50Okay, so that was 46 seconds after the trip.
40:5346 Sekunden und 20 Sekunden.
40:5546.20 Sekunden.
40:5746.20 Sekunden, okay.
40:59Das war wirklich beeindruckend.
41:01Sehr gut, Charlie.
41:03Mal sehen, was die Taycan kann.
41:05Ja, ja, jetzt.
41:07Over
41:09zu der Full-Electric-Vehikel.
41:11So, ich werde es in Sport Plus
41:13in Sport Plus.
41:15Ja.
41:17So, ich werde es unterbauen.
41:19All meine Toys sind noch auf,
41:21denn du hast deine Toys auf.
41:23Ja, du bist in 46.20 Sekunden.
41:25Das ist wirklich schnell.
41:27Das ist wirklich schnell.
41:29Das ist sehr schnell.
41:31Das ist sehr schnell.
41:33Sind Sie gut auf dem Stopwatch?
41:35Ja, ich werde.
41:37Ich werde.
41:39Okay, das Starts jetzt.
41:41Das Starts jetzt.
41:43Es ist eine Korne, Becks.
41:45Oh Gott, es ist gut auf dem Brakes.
41:47Oh, mein Gott.
41:52Untersteer, wie du, Harald.
41:54Ja, aber look, wie es runtergefallen.
41:56Ja, untersteer ist.
41:58Also, es ist Body Control ist besser,
42:00ich glaube.
42:03Ich bin nicht ganz so...
42:05Es ist nicht so gut, ist es?
42:06Ja.
42:07No Porpoising.
42:09Also, du braked at 105mph, dann.
42:12Ich habe es schon gesagt.
42:13Es war 140.
42:14Ja.
42:16Du, von der vorherigen Test.
42:18Es acceleriert super-quickly.
42:43Ah,
42:44Excuses,
42:45Excuses.
42:46Right,
42:47es ist Zeit fĂĽr die Resultate
42:48von Round 3.
42:50Karin,
42:51du hast mich in suspense
42:52lange genug.
42:53Die Panamera
42:54hat 46.2,
