00:00This time, we tackle the ultimate trip, one of the longest roads in Europe.
00:13To find out if an EV can ever be a true Grand Toro.
00:18Oh, hang on a moment. Low EV, battery warning, 10%.
00:23We get a look at the latest incarnation of a family favourite,
00:29the Honda Civic, and see whether it's as smart as it needs to be.
00:35Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Did you say we're in the top spec?
00:38Yes.
00:39Why have we got plastic seats?
00:42Tesla's latest SUV is quick on paper, but we take it to the track and see if it can outrun a Porsche.
00:49It doesn't matter what model they are. They just have this beautiful feel.
00:56This is fifth gear.
00:57What would be the difference?
00:59They'll still be screaming and squealing.
01:04Could you get a slowdown?
01:05And shouting.
01:06Stupid idea.
01:08I can't listen to this nonsense.
01:09But they'll also be this.
01:16The EV revolution is here.
01:19Put our electric vehicles right for you.
01:21What are the costs, choices, and challenges?
01:25And how do they stack up against their petrol-powered rivals?
01:29We're here to tell you everything you need to know about the new automotive landscape.
01:34This is the future of driving.
01:36This is the future of driving.
01:37This is fifth gear recharged.
01:39This is the Kia EV6. We've seen the EV6 before on the show and liked it very much. But this is not just any old EV6. This is the £62,000 GT, which, with 577 horsepower, is much more serious.
02:03GT stands for Grand Tourer, a car that can travel effortlessly over long distances. This is a brave step for Kia. Aside from select versions of the Porsche Taycan, makers have left this segment alone. How can a normal EV travel those distances with the range and charging issues?
02:23Kia say that it can. So we're going to put the EV6 GT to the test. That's exactly why we've come to Oslo in Norway.
02:30Running through Norway is the longest road in a single country in Europe. Guess what? It's called the E6.
02:37And we're going to be driving over a thousand miles of it from Oslo, in the south of Norway, all the way up to the Arctic Circle, to Tromsø, Europe's most northern city.
02:48In theory, a petrol engine car could do the trip in less than 24 hours of continuous driving. So the question is, with its electric power plant, can the EV6 GT do it in the same time?
03:03We'll have a clock counting down from 24 hours to see if the EV can match a petrol car. The clock will keep ticking during charge stops en route, but not during overnight charges, as we'll have stopped anyway.
03:21Shall we?
03:22Let's go.
03:27Starting the clock?
03:28Let's do it.
03:29Go.
03:30We are off.
03:331,080 miles.
03:37Kia say that with fast charges, it's possible to charge the EV6 GT from 10 to 80% in 18 minutes.
03:44But will we be able to find enough fast chargers on the way?
03:48Well, we must, because every second will count.
03:52Let's hope we've got choices and they're working.
03:57I'm sure over 1,000 miles, we're going to get to know this car very well.
04:03I've got a little bit of a soft spot already for the EV6. As a lot of EVs, it feels very smooth, very well appointed. But just the package that I'm seeing in front of me, the first impressions are, hello.
04:13Oh, it feels so sporty.
04:16Yeah.
04:16And there's a good reason for that. The standard car, twin motor, it's got around 340 equivalent horsepower.
04:24Okay, that's not shabby. That does a 0 to 62 in around 5.2 seconds. But this, we're upping that to 585 horsepower, which is gobsmacking. That's 0 to 62 in 3.5 seconds.
04:42This is a rocket ship. That is faster than a Porsche Taycan 4S, which is mind-blowing, considering this car costs £61,595.
04:55That's a bargain. Pressing the GT button on the steering wheel unleashes the Kia's full power.
05:03Holy cow. That was about quarter throttle. Really? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. That was just pressing the throttle.
05:14Did you hear that little whizzy noise? Yeah.
05:17We can't munch through our battery reserves early and want to stay within the speed limit, so we'll stick with the normal mode for now.
05:27This mode slims down the power to just 324 horsepower to the back wheels only.
05:33Here in Norway, the electric car is king. 87% of new car sales are either hybrid or fully V.
05:42If any country is going to have a good infrastructure which is serviceable, it feels like we're in that country.
05:48Two hours later and we're stopping for a tactical recharge.
05:52This should do the biz pretty quick. Charger, charger, charger.
05:56So there are the Tesla chargers.
05:59There's the Ionity chargers. That's what we want. That's what we need.
06:03What? Are they all full? They're all full. And that car's waiting.
06:07Yeah. So this is where an endurance drive in an EV starts to suck.
06:15With no charger available, all we can do is wait as the seconds tick by.
06:24This is so bad.
06:27Finally, after an agonising wait, a charger comes free.
06:31Alright, shall we have a look?
06:33Yeah.
06:37At least it's not raining.
06:38So it's plugged in.
06:40Oh, it's doing it.
06:41Purple.
06:42Yes.
06:43We're in business.
06:44We're in.
06:45We've already gone up 2%.
06:46Time to get something to eat.
06:47I'd say 10 minutes, that'd be charged.
06:48Let's go.
06:49Okay, let's go.
06:50Stopping there.
06:57With a rapid 80% charge and a change of driver, we're back on the road.
07:04We now should be able to reach tonight's hotel without further stops.
07:08But someone's been pressing buttons.
07:12Mate, we've got a problem.
07:14What?
07:15We've got to go 154 kilometres to get to the hotel tonight.
07:20Yeah, well, that's okay.
07:21No, it's not okay.
07:22Our range is currently reading 153 kilometres.
07:25Oh, yeah.
07:26That's a miscalculation of one kilometre.
07:30Not okay.
07:31So it says there, we've got a range of 153.
07:34Yeah.
07:35This is the bar showing our range.
07:36But there is that little bit at the end there.
07:39It says if we turn the fan off, we'll up our range by two kilometres.
07:44Have you had the aircon on all day?
07:47And we've both felt comfortable all day.
07:49We have both been losing range all day due to comfort.
07:54Right, AC off.
07:55Look at that.
07:56That's instantly give us 155 kilometres range,
07:59which now means we've got one kilometre spare to get to the hotel.
08:05Three hours later, nearing Trondheim,
08:08regen braking and careful driving have improved the picture.
08:12We've now got 74 kilometres range left,
08:17but only about 10 kilometres left to finish our day's drive.
08:27It's nearly midnight.
08:30There's the hotel.
08:31There is the hotel.
08:32So we can't stop this clock until we've stopped the car and we've got a charger.
08:37And is there going to be a recharger?
08:40There's a charger.
08:41There.
08:42Uh-huh.
08:43This will reach.
08:44Come on.
08:45Okay.
08:46Wait, wait there.
08:47This is the moment.
08:50It's not reaching.
08:51Okay.
08:52You need to come like that much closer.
08:53Oh, yes.
08:54Oh, it's charging.
08:55Is it charging?
08:56It's charging.
08:57Stop the clock.
08:58Later on we find Jimmy's identical twin.
08:59You do realise it's not a real troll.
09:00I'm jumping out.
09:01I'm jumping out.
09:02Hang on.
09:03Hang on.
09:04And panic sets in at the charging station.
09:06Sir, you need to repair it.
09:07Uh, what?
09:09But now we've got ourselves a fifth gear recharge shootout.
09:12The drill is this.
09:13We take two cars of similar price stability,
09:15put them on a track with a British Touring car legend,
09:18that'll be me,
09:19and find out which one of the cars are going to be.
09:21It's just a real troll.
09:22It's a real troll.
09:23It's a real troll.
09:24It's a real troll.
09:25It's a real troll.
09:26It's a real troll.
09:27It's a real troll.
09:28It's a real troll.
09:29It's a real troll.
09:30It's a real troll.
09:31It's a real troll.
09:32And find out which is quicker.
09:34Can a new EV shake up the motor in status quo?
09:37Tesla's unassuming Model Y SUV has plenty of power on paper.
09:42But is it good enough to out-drive a fire-breathing performance benchmark?
09:47The Porsche Macan GTS, which is powered by petrol.
09:52Let's find out.
09:53Contender number one.
09:55It's the Tesla Model Y.
09:57One of the freshest to the range.
09:59It's basically a Model 3 puffed up to SUV dimensions.
10:02This long-range Y costs $58,000 before options.
10:09So not exactly a cheap runabout.
10:11The performance is pretty savage.
10:130-60 in 4.8 seconds and up to a maximum of 135.
10:18And if previous Teslas are anything to go by, it'll be quicker around the corners too.
10:25But can the Tesla do much against this?
10:28The massively successful Porsche Macan.
10:31This GTS has pretty much the same power as the Model Y, but half a second quicker than 60.
10:37It costs just under 65 grand.
10:40Chalk and cheese?
10:41Actually, I reckon they're pretty close.
10:44Let's get moving with the Tesla.
10:46Now we've mentioned the rise and rise of the Tesla brand.
10:51But it is quite remarkable that, you know, after 15 years, we're now about to compare this Model Y with, you know, sports car royalty.
11:02Let's start with a negative, or maybe a negative.
11:06Weight, of course, is always the Achilles heel of any EV.
11:12You know, this is a two-ton car, but it's built on a skateboard platform so that the batteries are low, which will improve its weight distribution.
11:24Now, there's one thing I really don't like, which you can't disable in the menus of this car, and that is the regenerative braking.
11:33Every time you lift off the throttle, it does apply quite a lot of electric braking, and I don't want that.
11:39You know, I want to be in control of when the car goes nose down and it pitches.
11:43I think this is going to do quite a good lap time because around these long radius corners, it just tightens the line.
11:54Most other cars will start to understeer a little bit.
11:58Time for a fast lap.
12:00Let's go.
12:02Start what?
12:04Look at your fighter.
12:08I didn't think she was going to stop.
12:15I don't know if you noticed my face, Greg.
12:17Do you know what?
12:19It is quick, but the brakes...
12:22I don't like the braking.
12:25It's got any load on.
12:27It doesn't allow you to brake.
12:29But chassis-wise, well, I have to say I'm quite impressed.
12:36Because it's a big old bus there, it's two tons.
12:39But there it just turns in.
12:42Keeps turning in and I'm on the power.
12:50It's impressive, I have to say.
12:54And stop the watch.
12:56The Tesla Model Y crosses the line in 1 minute 22.57.
13:03Time for the Macan.
13:05Oh, do you know what?
13:08They just feel great in your hands.
13:10You know, Porsche just have the ability to give all of their cars.
13:17It doesn't matter what model they are.
13:19They just have this beautiful feel.
13:22The Macan has had a freshen up recently.
13:25And because Porsche dropped the top-of-the-tree turbo model,
13:28the GTS is now the fastest of the range.
13:31Now, under the bonnet, we've got a three-litre V6 twin-turbo,
13:38which is pretty rapid.
13:40And they will eventually go on to 170 miles an hour.
13:43Wow.
13:46Oh, it sounds lovely, doesn't it?
13:49Overall, the dimensions are similar to the Tesla.
13:52It's only a fraction shorter, narrower, and lower.
13:55And then there's the weight.
13:56So, here's a question for you.
13:58What do you reckon this weighs?
14:01Well, this is only 40 kilograms lighter than the Tesla.
14:08Which is remarkable, eh?
14:09There's no manual gearbox option,
14:11but instead a seven-speed dual-clutch one.
14:14Still, that's six more gears than the Y has.
14:17I mean, it's not perfect.
14:19I want to be able to change down a little bit earlier.
14:22Sometimes I'm getting a rejected down change.
14:26Because the computer said, no, no, no, that's not right.
14:31Let's get ready for a fast lap.
14:34Right, so, start the watch.
14:42That was pretty nice.
14:43It's tight as we head into the first checkpoint.
14:46The Porsche is half a second ahead.
14:48Good exit there.
14:49I mean, it just feels great in your hands.
14:52Little Booyah fighter.
14:57Well, as the Tesla's impressive,
14:59but I don't feel part of the car.
15:01I don't feel at one with the chassis,
15:03where this I certainly do.
15:06Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, Dobbin.
15:09That was good round there.
15:10Not waiting at all for the car.
15:11Second checkpoint.
15:12The Porsche has stretched its lead to a fat two seconds.
15:17Now, we're in Sport Plus mode,
15:19which, you know, sharpens up the gear, mapping,
15:24sharpens up the steering,
15:25sharpens up the throttle response.
15:27The Porsche's done it in one minute 19.15.
15:36The Tesla is well behind,
15:38but that's a great result from the EV against a really serious motor.
15:43Hey, and guess what?
15:44An all-electric McCann is just around the corner.
15:48Oh, I can't wait.
15:49Join us after the break to find out whether our EVGT
15:55can make that thousand-mile challenge
15:57without running out of steam.
15:59Is it charging?
16:00Go check the car.
16:01It's charging.
16:02Grace, it's charging.
16:03It's charging.
16:04It's charging!
16:09Welcome back to Our Norway Adventure.
16:11It's day two.
16:13And our question is...
16:15Come on!
16:17Can the Kia EV6 GT be as fast and relaxing as a petrol GT car,
16:23given the EV's shorter range and charging times?
16:27Over three days,
16:28we have 24 hours of driving and charging time
16:31to travel a thousand miles on Europe's longest road in a single country.
16:36Starting the clock?
16:37Goal!
16:39Rudely pulled out of bed,
16:40and already there's a challenge.
16:42We can't quite get to tonight's hotel,
16:44with just one charge stop.
16:46We're going to need two.
16:48But the first could be a quick one.
16:51I reckon we need five minutes charge max.
16:54So we do that, plug it in, run to the loo,
16:57straight back out of the car, go.
17:00Yeah.
17:01Norway has one of the best charging networks in the world.
17:04They've got 17,000 charging points
17:06and 3,000 fast vehicle chargers.
17:09Six times the chargers per head than in the UK.
17:12But even here, a long trip demands a careful charging strategy.
17:18We're about to drive into hell.
17:20Into hell?
17:21Yeah.
17:22A thousand Norwegians live in a place called hell.
17:26And it's just here.
17:28Is it hot there?
17:30What's the temperature now?
17:3215 degrees.
17:33It's 15 degrees in hell.
17:35Grace?
17:36Not as hot as I imagined.
17:43Nearly four hours into our journey,
17:45and it's time for our splash and dash quick charge stop.
17:48There, there, there, there, there, there.
17:52Are they chargers?
17:54But immediately, things start to go wrong.
17:57Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
17:58What?
17:59There's a man who's just opened.
18:01Oh, no.
18:02Just get in there.
18:03What is going on here?
18:04It looks as though an engineer is about to take the machine out of action.
18:08This could be a...
18:09I don't think this charge is...
18:10Oh, don't tell me that.
18:11Don't tell me that.
18:12Don't tell me that.
18:13Because...
18:14I'm jumping out, I'm jumping out.
18:15There's a guy there.
18:16Hang on, let me jump out now.
18:17I'm going, watch my bum.
18:19What?
18:20What?
18:22Not working?
18:23Huh?
18:24Is it working?
18:25Repair.
18:26You need to repair it?
18:27Yeah.
18:28How long do you want to stay?
18:29Yeah, 10 minutes.
18:30Okay.
18:31We're just doing a fast charge.
18:32Perfect.
18:33You in?
18:34Yeah, we're in.
18:35I've swiped it.
18:36Charging?
18:37We're going to check the car.
18:38Check the car.
18:42Does it say?
18:43I don't really know.
18:44There's buttons.
18:45I've pressed a button.
18:47It will be because he needs to repair it.
18:49It's not working.
18:50No, no, no, no.
18:51It's working.
18:52It's charging.
18:53Grace, it's charging.
18:54It's charging.
18:55It's charging.
18:56It's charging.
18:57Go, Lou.
18:58Lou, go.
18:59Go, 10 minutes.
19:00Come on, 10 minutes.
19:02Back on the road and as we head north, things are going to get colder.
19:05So we're getting placed to a place called North Norg, which is North Norway.
19:10Yeah.
19:11That's also getting close to the Arctic circle.
19:13So essentially that's where things are starting to get a little bit colder.
19:17How do you think the Kia's batteries are going to cope as it gets colder?
19:22Well, essentially EVs, their battery performance drops in cold weather.
19:26However, Kia as standard have a battery heating system.
19:30So as it gets cold, we shouldn't lose too much range, but if it doesn't work, we could be
19:37in a bit of bother.
19:38Here we go.
19:39This is Nord Norg or North Norway.
19:44So we're now in Southern Norway.
19:45And when we go under this arch, we're in North Norway.
19:48That's pretty cool.
19:49That's like the gateway to the Arctic circle.
19:52But before we went under the arch, Grace wanted to stop at the gift shop.
19:57Come on, Jimmy.
19:58I'm not convinced this is a vital part of the trip.
20:00Come on.
20:01What are we doing?
20:02Getting a selfie.
20:03You do realise it's not a real troll.
20:08Jimmy, look.
20:09Yes.
20:10Now this is looking up.
20:11Winner.
20:16You were really grumpy before we went into the shop.
20:19Well, because it was wasting time.
20:20I'm about efficiency.
20:21But now you've come out with this corker on your head.
20:24Yeah, I know.
20:25Well, I've learnt the lesson, haven't I?
20:26Go with the flow a little bit, you might get a nice hat.
20:29The Kia has settled down to using 19.3 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometres.
20:36That translates to 250 miles per full charge.
20:40Not bad for a near 700 horsepower GT.
20:44But after another two hours driving, that range, though impressive,
20:48was starting to run out.
20:51It's already 8 o'clock at night and it still feels like the middle of the day
20:54because the sun is really bright.
20:55And we need to get to a charging station
20:58because we are on 13% with 15 kilometres
21:03to get to the charging station.
21:09With all due seriousness, we are getting short of range now.
21:14Is that one in there? Is that a charger?
21:17Because we do need to get this filled up.
21:19Let's have a look.
21:20And we need a full charge now.
21:22Oh, and this is the first time!
21:26They're free! They're free!
21:27They're free!
21:28They're free!
21:29The first time there's been no queue!
21:30There's people camped by them, look!
21:33It's amazing how excited you get after living with severe range anxiety.
21:38Griff!
21:39We need to do the deed.
21:40My car's now at 11% charge.
21:42So this should be pretty prime to get it up to 80 quite quick.
21:46Probably about 20-25 minutes.
21:48You know what that means.
21:49Pizza?
21:50Enough time for a pizza!
21:51Oh yeah!
21:52Let's get it stuck in!
21:54Whoa!
21:5520 minutes and a pizza later.
21:58Watch out for the hot, salty bits.
22:02And we're ready to push on towards Rognan.
22:05Tonight's hotel stop.
22:08A couple of hours later, and even in the land of permanent daylight,
22:13things were getting darker.
22:16I don't know about you, I wasn't expecting anything quite as moody as this.
22:20There's like all this weird mist everywhere.
22:22Yeah.
22:23It's a bit spooky, isn't it?
22:24Yeah.
22:25And the temperature has absolutely dropped.
22:27I mean, it's been down to three degrees,
22:31but we're still seeming to maintain good battery life.
22:36We have just crossed the line of the Arctic Circle.
22:42This is the furthest north I have ever been.
22:45I'm shocked at actually how bright it is.
22:49It is.
22:50So tonight we're staying in a place called Rognan.
22:52Mm-hmm.
22:53I think we're looking good on timing.
22:56We now have eight hours left,
22:58and I'm sure we've done more than two-thirds of the journey.
23:02That means we're on track.
23:03We're on track.
23:04There's actually quite a few chargers here.
23:05There is.
23:06Which is nice to see.
23:08Get it plugged in.
23:09It's on your side.
23:10Coming up in part three.
23:14Come for a spin.
23:15No.
23:16Jimmy gets close to nature.
23:20Before things get critical inside the Kia.
23:23Whoa.
23:24That's the first time that's come up.
23:26Fuck, that's come up.
23:32And in our team test, we've got a new spin on an old car.
23:37It's the new Honda Civic Hybrid.
23:40Look at how the miles per gallon is dropping rapidly.
23:43We're not built for economy, are we?
23:45No.
23:46Hey.
24:04Now it's time to get a first look and first drive of a brand new EV.
24:09Yes, it's the fifth gear recharged team test.
24:15Today, the team tested the Honda Civic.
24:18E.
24:19H-E-V.
24:20E-E-E-E-E-E-E.
24:21E.
24:24The Honda Civic.
24:25Just another hatch, right?
24:27Well, no.
24:28The Civic is like Volkswagen's Golf.
24:30A motoring legend.
24:32The first generation came out in 72,
24:35and since then over 27 million have been sold.
24:38The 11th gen came out on its 50th birthday.
24:42We're interested in its new hybrid power.
24:46But should you be?
24:49Ladies and gentlemen, this is the brand new Civic.
24:53Honda.
24:54E-H-E-V.
24:55It is their hybrid car.
24:58Oh, what's the face?
24:59It's not a Civic to me.
25:00Because it hasn't got the flicks and the weirds.
25:01Yeah, it's not aggressive.
25:02It's not sporty.
25:03It's not aggressive.
25:04It's not racing looking.
25:05More importantly, it doesn't look like a hatchback.
25:06At all.
25:07What's that on the back there?
25:08This rear end.
25:09Do you know what a hyena looks like?
25:10Ugly, horrible things.
25:11We've got a slopey bum.
25:12Do you know what I mean?
25:13Do you not see that?
25:14Yeah, like curved.
25:15What are you laughing at?
25:16Like curved.
25:17Horrible form of a hyena.
25:18Jason compared it to a hyena.
25:19Of course, he has many, many hyenas in his backyard,
25:21so he knows all about them.
25:22Yeah, Jason's got a fetish for hyenas.
25:24It kind of looks a bit like other cars on the road.
25:25Whereas before, there was no mistake in a Civic was a Civic.
25:29So, in case you missed it, looks have been written off us needing a bit more work.
25:34Never mind, because Hondas are known for engineering and the Atkinson Cycle 2-litre with 2-litre
25:39with 2-litres.
25:40It's a horrible form of a hyena.
25:41It's a horrible form of a hyena.
25:42It's a horrible form of a hyena.
25:43Jason compared it to a hyena.
25:44Of course, he has many, many hyenas in his backyard,
25:45so he knows all about them.
25:46Yeah, Jason's got a fetish for hyenas.
25:47It kind of looks a bit like other cars on the road.
25:48Whereas before, there was no mistake in a Civic was a Civic.
25:50And the Atkinson Cycle 2-litre with 2-licky motors promises splendid refinement and economy.
25:58This is a 2-litre hybrid.
26:012-litre hybrid.
26:02It's got 181 horsepower.
26:04Turbocharged?
26:05No.
26:06There's a four-cylinder?
26:07Yeah.
26:08But there's only two exhaust cylinders.
26:10It must be done for efficiency and space saving.
26:13I want to show you the other end, the hyena end.
26:17Because there is something interesting in here.
26:22This, ladies and gentlemen, is a sideways moving parcel shelf.
26:28Why is that new?
26:29I know.
26:30Why has no one else done that?
26:31I know.
26:32I really like that.
26:33How much weight could you actually get on that?
26:34Oh, no, nothing.
26:35It's just for covering, isn't it?
26:36No, that's just for covering, isn't it?
26:37I think it's a lovely idea.
26:38I'm with you.
26:39It's very clever.
26:40The cool parcel shelf cancels out the dull looks.
26:44Fantastic.
26:45So, this is the advanced spec.
26:50Top spec.
26:51There are three trim levels, so we're in the top notch, which means we get...
26:54Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
26:57Did you say we're in the top spec?
26:58Yes.
26:59Why have we got plastic seats?
27:00It's synthetic leather.
27:02No, it's plastic.
27:03There's no leather in it.
27:04Leather comes from an animal.
27:06Look, in this spec we get an electrically adjustable heated front seat, heated steering wheel, which is all good for me, and panoramic sunroof, which is good for you in the back.
27:17It's a steering wheel in leather or plastic?
27:19It's the synthetic leather.
27:21Plastic.
27:22Well, I have plenty of room, though.
27:25Do you know, interior-wise, there's some really nice touches in there, but there's some awful things as well.
27:29So, the nice touches, I like the honeycomb on the dashboard.
27:32I don't like the seats.
27:34On a top spec car, I want leather seats.
27:36I don't want something leather, i.e. fake leather, i.e. plastic.
27:41Okay, plastic.
27:43Jason isn't happy, but he might like this car on the move.
27:47The Honda is clever.
27:48Basically, it's an EV, but the petrol motor powers the battery, which powers the two motors, which powers the car.
27:57The petrol engine can cut in and drive the wheels at a constant speed, but it's hard to tell when, or so Honda claims.
28:05Right, team.
28:06Yeah.
28:07Here we are.
28:08We are going to play a little game, okay?
28:11In a very short while, I'm going to ask you to close your eyes.
28:14What for?
28:15What for?
28:16Because I want you to use your senses, your other senses.
28:18I don't want you looking at the screen.
28:20I've seen it now.
28:21I want you to tell me when you think it's in electric mode and when you think the engine is assisting.
28:25I love a car game.
28:27So, I asked the team to use all their senses apart from their eyes to work out when the car was in electric mode and when it was using the engine in hybrid mode.
28:37Because Honda thinks that this is a seamless change.
28:40So, we all closed our eyes and played a game of whether we could tell what modes it was in and Vicky would drive the car in certain modes.
28:47Right, eyes are shut.
28:48Right, go on then.
28:49So, what do you think we're in now?
28:51Well, you're coasting down a hill for starters.
28:53Curse you!
28:54Curse you and your extrasensory perception.
28:57I'm going to say hybrid.
28:59Right now?
29:00Yeah.
29:01Well, it's a bit of everything, isn't it?
29:03Well, it's hard to tell.
29:04Ah, you're on EV?
29:07EV for me?
29:08Are you going hybrid?
29:09I'm going hybrid.
29:10Hey, what is it?
29:11I'm on hybrid.
29:12Ooh!
29:13Hey!
29:14Oh, hang on a minute.
29:15Mr. Plato, oh, this is an easy game.
29:17Well, I've detected we were going down here.
29:18One to you, one to me.
29:19Who's the one who's just lost?
29:20Yeah.
29:21And there's more nutty.
29:22Right now?
29:23Right now?
29:24Well, it's a bit of everything, isn't it?
29:25Well, it's a bit of everything, isn't it?
29:26Well, it's hard to tell.
29:27Ah, you're on EV?
29:28And there's more not-as-it-seems trickery.
29:31The Honda Civic does not have a gearbox.
29:33There's a virtual box, the iCVT, which fakes gear changes using extra cabin sound,
29:40and brake regen, which give it the feel of rising revs in sport mode.
29:45Wowzers.
29:46But does it actually work?
29:48Whee!
29:49Bit of air.
29:53Oh, yeah.
29:54It does work.
29:55Yeah.
29:56Yeah, you can hear that.
29:57That's quite sweet.
29:58Yeah.
29:59It sounds quite crazy, doesn't it?
30:00That is quite sweet, and it sounds reasonably real.
30:03More real than many other cars.
30:05Yeah, definitely, yeah.
30:06Sounds Honda-y.
30:07How does it feel behind the wheel?
30:08Yeah.
30:09It's all right?
30:10It actually does feel like I've got a Honda chassis underneath me.
30:13I always think that Hondas make decent handling cars.
30:18Oh, yeah, absolutely.
30:19So that is a tick.
30:21I mean, it hasn't got enough grunt.
30:23Obviously, only being two-litre, normally aspirated with a tiny electric engine in there to back it up.
30:30I can't wait for the Civic Type R. Really can't.
30:37Look at how the miles per gallon is dropping rapidly.
30:42Seems like you've got a bit of understeer there, yeah?
30:44It's all right.
30:45We're not built for economy, are we?
30:46No.
30:47Eh?
30:48This non-plug-in hybrid can beat 50 MPG with gentle use.
30:54That's as good as a diesel.
30:56Do you know what?
30:57I don't think I like the idea of non-plug-in hybrids.
31:00Because why?
31:01Because it just feels a bit pointless.
31:04Yeah.
31:05I like the idea of a plug-in hybrid.
31:07And then you will get a clear, for example, 30 to 50 miles of electric range and you've got a special electric button.
31:14Of course, I understand all the benefits of it being a traditional hybrid.
31:19You don't have to plug it in anywhere.
31:21But I kind of miss the fact that it can run on, say, 30 miles of electric power all in one go.
31:27For me, this kind of hybrid car is a bit old-fashioned.
31:32I suppose it works for city driving, but to get the maximum amount of efficiency, you're better off with a plug-in.
31:40This might be beneficial for people who don't have access to home charging or might find it hard to find a public charger.
31:48So there's that benefit that you haven't got to plug it in.
31:52So we've got good kit, a good chassis, good economy and smart tech.
31:57Can the Civic shrug off those hyena comments, though, and deliver a more friendly conclusion?
32:03I am enjoying myself.
32:06Seems like it.
32:07It's definitely, it's able and it's agile and, you know, it's quick enough.
32:12So the Honda Civic, it looks very much different to all the other ones, but it still lives up to its Civic name.
32:19It's well built, it's decent to drive.
32:22I think it's an improvement from the last generation and I can't wait to have a go in the Type R.
32:28So for that reason, I'm going to give it a seven.
32:31I quite like the look of this car overall.
32:33It's got sleek, swoopy lines.
32:35But for me, I would have preferred it even more for it to look sportier and more aggressive.
32:41So I'm really intrigued to see what the Type R version would look like.
32:45But this one, I'm going to give it a seven.
32:48I like it.
32:49I found it enjoyable for what it is.
32:52I am going to give it a score of 7.5.
32:57It simply can't be any more than a seven, but I recommend the Type R comes along.
33:03That will probably look like a nine.
33:06Not too shabby then.
33:08The Honda Civic is all right.
33:10It may be a slow burn design to tempt you in, but once it does, it's got the power to win you over.
33:16But we still can't wait for the Type R.
33:21Coming up later, we get to see if Jimmy and Grace manage to complete their 1,000 mile Mega EV mission.
33:28That is the most northerly city in Europe there.
33:33What way to end this trip?
33:35If we make it.
33:37Back in Norway.
33:54It's the third and final day of our grand touring adventure.
34:01Getting up after so little sleep isn't easy.
34:04Still, I'm sure Grace will be having just as hard a time.
34:08Where have you been?
34:11Don't even ask.
34:12Get in.
34:14You know we've got over 300 miles to cover today.
34:17Let's go.
34:18Time to start our countdown clock.
34:22In an ultimate range anxiety test, we're trying to see whether this Kia EV6 GT can equal a petrol Grand Tourer and drive 1,000 miles through Norway in just 24 hours of driving and charge time.
34:39And on this, our last leg, we're heading towards our final destination point, Toronto.
34:46Day three, Jimmy.
34:48Yeah, the last day.
34:49How are you feeling?
34:50Not great.
34:51Not enough sleep has occurred.
34:54This challenge has been a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be.
34:58I'm really concerned now.
35:01Are we going to make the 24 hour challenge or not?
35:04So today's journey, we've got to do over 300 miles at the Norwegian slow speed limits.
35:10So we can't go as fast as you might imagine.
35:12Yeah.
35:13I've worked out we need about eight hours, six minutes to do today's journey.
35:22Right.
35:23To get to our final destination.
35:26Yeah.
35:27Of Tromso.
35:28We do have to take a car ferry by the looks on the map.
35:32Yeah.
35:33So currently we're about 50% charge.
35:37Do we charge before we get the ferry or after we get the ferry?
35:41I reckon we charge before just in case we come across any problems with any of the charges like we have done.
35:49All right.
35:50Well, let's go first, get it done.
35:51If we do get full charge at this first place, we know we're good until the very end of this journey.
35:56This will be our final charge.
35:58Fingers crossed.
35:59Yeah.
36:00If this does turn out to be our last charge, it means we've covered more than a thousand miles,
36:05done in three overnight full charges and three fast top ups.
36:09All right, let's just hope.
36:10Can you see the charges there?
36:12I can see two charges.
36:15Two charges.
36:16Let's just hope they're working.
36:17With no cars.
36:18No cars.
36:19It looks as though we've got the charges all to ourselves.
36:24So we've got 50 kilowatts here.
36:29Let's get it on and in.
36:30That'll do.
36:31Swipe there.
36:33What are we going to do while this charges?
36:36That's late.
36:37I think I might have to go and take advantage of this trip.
36:40Coming for a swim?
36:41No.
36:42Fish will have your toes.
36:44You're missing out.
36:45Give it a shout when it's charged.
36:48As a big fan of the outdoors and wild water swimming, Jimmy has trouble resisting some
36:54of the best water he's ever seen.
36:56However, you may wish to look away.
37:00So how was the dip?
37:10Yeah, not bad.
37:11Very beautiful.
37:12Fresh, fresh water.
37:19The surroundings around us, for me, they have just been sublime.
37:24Incredible.
37:25The views we've driven through so far.
37:27Yeah.
37:31Right.
37:32Here is the entrance to the car ferry.
37:35So this is nerve wracking now because if there's any delays, we could be in a lot of
37:39trouble just getting onto this ferry.
37:41We need to get on and go.
37:45Look, here comes the ferry.
37:47There is the ferry.
37:48During the crossing, we're going to stop the clock.
37:56Is that cheating?
37:58Well, the car isn't running and it isn't charging.
38:02So it seems fair.
38:07That way?
38:08That way.
38:09This way?
38:10Yeah.
38:13This really is the first moment we'll be able to relax and just take in these absolutely
38:16stunning Nordic views, isn't it?
38:18Yeah.
38:19It's beautiful.
38:20I have to admit, this trip has been slightly more manic than I'd imagined.
38:24But we have only got around five hours left of this journey.
38:27When we get to the other end, we've got just under 200 miles still to go.
38:32It's going to be really, really tight to the wire all the way to the end.
38:37Time to run the clock and start driving again.
38:40But this is remote now.
38:45We are a long way up north.
38:47Back on the E6 and away we go.
38:50We've got just enough range to make it to Tromso.
38:54This is obviously not the time to do something stupid.
38:58But I think we've earned it.
39:00We're going to have a proper press on that GT button.
39:03We've just got to see what it's like.
39:05Really?
39:06Yeah.
39:07We're going to use it?
39:08Whoa!
39:11That is insane!
39:14When you press that button, you don't just get more power and acceleration.
39:18There's a whole load of other things happening.
39:20I mean, it comes alive.
39:21Yeah.
39:22All that 700 horsepower really does make this GT closer to a supercar in outright go.
39:28Don't tell me what it does to the range though.
39:31After all of that, we still do need to make it to the end, don't we?
39:34That has been a bit of a chunk out of our range actually.
39:38It has.
39:39That aside, the fact is that this journey has actually changed my attitude towards electric cars for the better.
39:47For the first time ever, I feel I'm in an EV that really does what it says it's going to do.
39:55And that for me has given me confidence in driving an EV.
39:58And yeah, sure, the chargers can sometimes be a little bit finickety, not well worked out and not enough of them.
40:04The infrastructure isn't quite there.
40:06But with this car, if you have got the infrastructure, I'm absolutely 100% convinced that you can do what you want to do.
40:13You can motor normally and have fun doing it.
40:16Yeah, I have to agree with you there.
40:18This car has exceeded my expectations really.
40:23It's important to remember if you do want that GT experience, you have to watch your speed and still plan carefully for electric refills.
40:31And predictably, on the last bit of the journey, we have a real wobbler.
40:35Hang on a moment.
40:39That's the first time that's come up.
40:43Low EV battery warning, 10%.
40:45We are all in here.
40:55What time is it?
40:5611pm.
40:5811pm.
40:59Look how bright it is still.
41:01We've only got 5% battery power left.
41:06That's 17 miles range.
41:09And we've got 10 minutes of time left.
41:13Things are getting just a little bit on the tight side.
41:204%, 16km left of range.
41:25There is the city in the distance.
41:28That is the most northerly city in Europe.
41:32There.
41:34What way to end this trip?
41:36If we make it.
41:39Our finishing line in Tromsø is to be the beautiful cathedral.
41:43We've got 6km to drive.
41:474% of battery life.
41:49And just 8 minutes.
41:53We've now got 4% charge left.
41:55Barely any range left.
41:57And 5 minutes 33 seconds.
42:01There is only 3km to go.
42:04We're about to hit the 5 minute mark.
42:07Fuck.
42:08With 4% battery.
42:11I'm on the edge of my seat now.
42:154 minutes.
42:164 minutes.
42:17We really need to go.
42:18We can't have come this far and not do it.
42:20That's the cathedral.
42:22That's it.
42:23That's where we're going.
42:24No, no, no, no.
42:25Come on, we've got 3 minutes.
42:26That's the cathedral there.
42:27With 3%.
42:28Come on.
42:29It's literally there.
42:30There's traffic lights.
42:31The traffic lights have just turned green.
42:32Come on, traffic lights.
42:34Oh, come on.
42:35Is this it?
42:36Is this it?
42:37Go through.
42:38Go through.
