00:01You see the castle up there?
00:03Wow.
00:04Wow.
00:06Following a life-threatening health crisis.
00:08I was diagnosed with leukemia.
00:10Pat and Jesse are taking their two children
00:12and making a fresh start.
00:14Being the sole caregiver,
00:16I definitely lost myself for sure.
00:18Are you on holiday?
00:19No, actually, we just moved here.
00:21I was approached with an opportunity in Edinburgh.
00:25And, of course, I want that Scottish charm.
00:27It's completely different from what we're used to.
00:30I personally like modern.
00:32If Jesse and I want different things,
00:34it's typically Jesse that comes out as the winner.
00:36Whoever lands in that one needs to watch the head.
00:39Me.
00:54Wow.
00:55Wow.
00:56What do we say?
00:58We got married in 2012.
01:022013.
01:032013.
01:042013.
01:05I'm joking.
01:06And then in the summer of 2018,
01:09I was diagnosed with leukemia.
01:11And it became a three-and-a-half-year process
01:15of chemotherapy.
01:17We lived in a state of fear.
01:19Is he waking up with a fever?
01:21Does he have a cold?
01:22That really wore down on us.
01:24But it also opened our eyes to what we wanted to do with the rest of our lives.
01:30Penny, do you think any princesses live in that castle?
01:33What?
01:34I wonder how old it is.
01:35I work in software.
01:36And I was approached by my company with an opportunity in Edinburgh.
01:41The job offer came to us about a week after you rang the bell.
01:44Which was?
01:45The last chemotherapy session.
01:46Yeah.
01:47So it was kind of almost like a sign.
01:49So we thought, no time like the present to experience the world.
01:54Think we're going to like living here?
01:55Mm-hmm.
01:56Yeah.
01:57I think so.
01:58I think so, too.
01:59We're selling everything.
02:00Our cars, our house.
02:01I'm a speciality check, and I'm leaving tenure.
02:04But I decided to become a virtual assistant so I can take care of the kids a little bit more.
02:10But I am a little concerned about starting my own business.
02:13Pat likes to spend a little bit more than I would.
02:16With what we've been through, I think we deserve to find a nice home to live in.
02:20We're both a little stubborn.
02:23Maybe a little bit more than others.
02:25You have high expectations of where you want to end up, whereas I'm more willing to go with the flow.
02:31Going through such an illness, you kind of get into that survival mode.
02:36I think meeting new people that don't know our background and putting ourselves in a different situation is really going to help us find ourselves again.
02:45I need to be actually careful on this one.
02:48Mulcahill is a small town.
02:50We want our children to experience other parts of the world.
02:53And the potential of living a different lifestyle is really exciting.
02:57Edinburgh, it's got the history, it's got the culture, but it's also well suited for families.
03:03But it's a particularly hard market to get into.
03:06We know that city center is probably going to be a little bit more expensive.
03:10But we're hoping to find a place that we can walk down the street and have cafes and pubs.
03:15They're moving across with two kids.
03:17So I think at the heart of it is finding a place that's right for their family.
03:20Three to four bedrooms.
03:22Four would be nice since Jessie will be working from home.
03:25Two bathrooms.
03:26Some sort of outdoor space.
03:28And I'd like something a little bit more modern.
03:31I definitely want more of the authentic Scottish charm.
03:34I'd like to be close to my office, somewhere I can ride a bike.
03:38We prefer not to buy a car.
03:40Okay.
03:41So city center would be ideal.
03:43How much have you got to spend?
03:44Three thousand dollars would be the top.
03:47I would prefer less.
03:49That is a reasonable amount, but it's more the compromise that one of them is going to have to make.
03:53Scottish charm does not come with the clean lines and the new look.
03:56When we compromise, she always wins.
03:59Ratho is a quaint little village just 20 minutes out of Edinburgh.
04:04It's got very good transport links right into the city center.
04:07This house is going to be right up Pat Street.
04:09It's as modern as modern gets.
04:11I'm a bit apprehensive about how Jessie's going to feel.
04:13It doesn't have any of that Scottish charm, but it's a great family home.
04:17I personally like the look.
04:20Nice, clean, new build house.
04:22I was really hoping for more of that authentic Scottish charm.
04:25It's got four bedrooms and five bathrooms.
04:29Wow, five bathrooms.
04:30That's a lot of bathrooms.
04:31That's a lot of cleaning for Pat.
04:33It's got a lovely garden at the back and it comes in at three thousand dollars a month.
04:39That's right at the top of what we wanted to spend.
04:42Pat is okay with spending because he doesn't truly understand the budget.
04:46I have to be a little bit more realistic.
04:48We would have to consider commuting costs and purchasing a car.
04:52Yeah.
04:53And I want to live closer to the restaurants, the stores.
04:57And we come.
04:59Oh wow.
05:00And we head straight on into the living area.
05:02It's a big room.
05:03I like how fresh and new everything is.
05:06It would be nice to kind of sit on the sofa and hang out in here.
05:10I would love the fireplace.
05:11Yeah.
05:12But it is a big room.
05:13Okay.
05:14This is the only room downstairs, so we'll go straight upstairs.
05:17And then we come to the kitchen dining area.
05:21Wow.
05:22The cooktop is really nice with the hood right above it.
05:24Yeah.
05:25I could cook a lot of meals here.
05:26He is the chef in our family.
05:27I was getting that impression.
05:29Yeah.
05:30What's your favorite dish then?
05:32Oh, I don't know.
05:33Anything that our kids will eat really.
05:35So at this point, pizza and chicken nuggets.
05:38Absolutely.
05:39And then obviously you've got the dining.
05:41I like how connected it all is.
05:43I like how we can open the doors.
05:45Yeah.
05:46The kids can be outside and playing while you can still have an eye on them,
05:50which is really nice.
05:51I think we're going to gain a lot of really good memories with our children.
05:56It's a little far from the city center, but you can tell he's excited.
06:01And then here's the guest bedroom.
06:03It'd be an office.
06:04And then brings you into what would be the main bedroom.
06:07Wow.
06:08This is really nice.
06:09This room is huge.
06:10Nice big window.
06:11Yeah.
06:12Plenty of storage.
06:13I don't know what I would do with all that storage.
06:15We'd figure something out.
06:16It's not her cup of tea, but something that we could,
06:19move in right away and not have to do much work to.
06:24I think Jessie's going to be harder to please, to be honest.
06:27Well, should we take a look up at the kids' quarters then?
06:29Yeah, let's do it.
06:30You've got the room there that would be for Jack.
06:33The family bathroom in there.
06:36Wow.
06:37Great tub for bath time.
06:38And then into what would be Penelope's bedroom.
06:41Wow.
06:42Yeah, it's a really nice room.
06:43And a cat.
06:44Does the cat come with the house?
06:45No.
06:46Sadly, the cat does not.
06:47Aww.
06:48She would love this.
06:49Yeah.
06:50Yeah?
06:51But I don't know if I felt comfortable with both of them being upstairs alone.
06:54Yeah.
06:55She's still pretty young.
06:56You've got a guest bedroom downstairs.
06:58That could potentially be Penelope's bedroom.
07:00Yeah, there's a lot of flexibility.
07:02This house has a lot going for it.
07:03It looks like a really good candidate.
07:05Obviously, I take his opinions in consideration, but I want to live close to the city.
07:11So out we come.
07:12Wow.
07:13This is really nice.
07:14Love the space.
07:15Big space, isn't it?
07:16Oh, the trampoline.
07:17The kids would love that.
07:18Yeah.
07:19Yeah.
07:20I do really like the fact that everything is nice and new.
07:23I think Pat would move in there tomorrow if he could.
07:26Jessie, not so much.
07:27It's really at the top of what we want to pay.
07:30I think it's going to be really tough to sell her.
07:32She's usually the winner when we disagree.
07:35And of course, I miss that Scottish charm.
07:39So this is the property here for you.
07:41Laura produces the charm Jessie's after at a discount price.
07:45The house reminds me of something from a fairy tale.
07:48I love the wall.
07:49It almost looks unfinished.
07:51I think there's better options that might be out there.
07:54I think I can bring him around.
08:02Jessie, she's the yin to my yang.
08:05I am the outgoing, and he's the introvert.
08:09Jack is a clone of me, and Penelope is a clone of her.
08:13Jack is really into history.
08:15Jack the history book.
08:16Yeah.
08:17And you.
08:18Yeah, absolutely.
08:19The fact that we're going to be on the footsteps of so many beautiful old places to show our kids.
08:25Really looking forward to it.
08:27We're getting a deep-fried chocolate bar.
08:29Ooh, that sounds good.
08:30I know, I'm excited.
08:31When my health went south and I got sick, we went through some really tough times.
08:36Came through it on the other end.
08:38How was it?
08:39It's really good.
08:40Hits the spot.
08:41We've realized that life is too short to kind of play the what-if game.
08:45So you really have to just push forward and see where the wind takes you.
08:49Pat, he's very accommodating.
08:51So I feel like that's why they work quite well together.
08:54I think ultimately it's going to be Jessie that we need to please.
08:57Because, you know, Pat's moving across for his job.
08:59Whereas Jessie needs to get settled first before she starts up her new career.
09:03I am a little worried about leaving my tenure to become a virtual assistant.
09:08But I definitely feel that this move and the career change is going to help bring my confidence back.
09:14But we need to focus on saving, making sure that our family is taken care of.
09:18So you'll be delighted to see here that we are right in the city center.
09:24Look at all these restaurants.
09:25Yeah, this looks like there's a lot going on.
09:27There's an awful lot going on.
09:29With Pat's willingness to compromise in mind, Laura focuses on Jessie's preference for city center charm at a reasonable price.
09:37This property couldn't be more central.
09:39And the good thing is even though you're in the center, you're actually in a nice quiet little street.
09:43It is a lot older, which I know Jessie will love.
09:47Here we are.
09:48Pretty close to your work.
09:50Yeah.
09:51It's a colony type house.
09:53These were built for the workers when they were building the new town.
09:56So, you know, there's your history.
09:58I love that.
09:59This is your garden here.
10:00Okay.
10:01And then it's got three bedrooms and one bathroom.
10:05Only one bathroom.
10:06That is the sacrifice that you make for being closer to the city center.
10:09However, this property is at $2,600 a month.
10:13Oh, I like that.
10:14Having my office so close is really a good advantage, but it looks like it's pretty small.
10:20All right.
10:21Okay, and we'll head straight into the living area.
10:24Okay.
10:25Wow.
10:26It's big.
10:27Nice high ceilings.
10:28It'd be nice if it was a little bit more modern, something that doesn't need fixing every month.
10:34I love the wooden shutters and, of course, the fireplace.
10:37I thought you would like that, Jessie.
10:38Yeah.
10:39Could you imagine yourselves kind of sitting on the sofa with the kids, the fire?
10:43I absolutely could.
10:45When Jessie gets excited about something, her eyes just kind of glaze over and she just sees sunshine and roses with everything.
10:52So head into the kitchen.
10:55I love the wall.
10:56It almost looks unfinished.
10:59The kitchen has been brought up to a modern standard.
11:02Yeah, it definitely has.
11:03That's a good thing.
11:04I wish the refrigerator was a little bit bigger, but I think it's an adequate cooking space.
11:09It's certainly not his style of house, but I also feel like he's a bit of a people pleaser with Jessie.
11:15So this would be Jack's room.
11:17Perfect.
11:18He would love that.
11:19And then this would be the main bedroom.
11:21A little bit small.
11:22Big bed, though.
11:23You can tell that it's a bit of an older house, dealing with a sloped ceiling.
11:28Obviously, you know, whoever lands in that one.
11:31Yeah.
11:32Needs to watch their head.
11:33I think we can all agree who's going to end up that person.
11:36Me.
11:37Well, should we go and take a look at the bathroom next?
11:40Sure.
11:41I'll let you guys go in.
11:42Okay.
11:43It does have a tub, which is perfect for the kids, and a shower.
11:46I think it is a little bit tight, and not having two bathrooms would be kind of a challenge.
11:52And so this would be where little Penelope would sleep.
11:56Oh, it's perfect.
11:59Great little size for her.
12:01Yeah, I like the bay window.
12:03A lot of light.
12:04Okay.
12:05Shall we go and check out the garden area and see what you think there?
12:08I think it's perfect.
12:10There's a little table where we can hang out while the kids are jumping on the trampoline.
12:14Yeah, I wouldn't have to spend all weekend cutting grass.
12:17It's a little small, but I think it's great.
12:20This house is completely different from what we're used to.
12:23I could see a fresh start here.
12:25It's exactly what I was hoping for.
12:27I love the location.
12:29She's already moving in in her mind.
12:31She's ready to go, but I think there's better options that might be out there.
12:36It's in a lovely sort of family area.
12:40Pat will love this house.
12:41I like the fact that it's a new build.
12:43It's modern.
12:44But I think ultimately it's going to be Jesse that we need to please way less than what you were looking to spend.
12:49Wow.
12:50But again, it doesn't really have that character I was looking for.
12:57All right.
12:58Going around the roundabout.
12:59Thank you, bud.
13:00Roundabout.
13:01I feel that something heavy has lifted off of our shoulders with having a clean bill of health.
13:06And I'm very excited to branch off on my own as a virtual assistant because I think it's a really cool opportunity for me to work on myself and show the world what I can do.
13:20I am a little nervous to leave that safety net because Pat is not the best at saving.
13:28It's fun to see all the really cool shops.
13:31Maybe we can go to that shop.
13:33What's funny, though, is that Jack and Pat are crazy for the history.
13:38Yeah.
13:39But it's you that would like the history and the property and Pat would like something modern.
13:45Yeah.
13:46And I think that's because in the States we spent about 10 years renovating an old historic house.
13:52And I'd like to maybe switch it up.
13:54Pat is looking for modern, new.
13:56But then, yes, the location is quite a bit far out.
13:59I'm hoping the huge saving might sway her.
14:03So this is a place called Queen's Ferry.
14:06It's about 15 minutes from the center.
14:08You do need public transport.
14:10But it's in a lovely sort of family area.
14:13There's lots of restaurants and bars and things for them to do.
14:15Feels like we would definitely need a car out here.
14:18Feels a little bit in the middle of nowhere.
14:21Here we are.
14:22Here we go and take a look.
14:24It's rather loud.
14:25It is right next to the motorway.
14:27But I like the fact that it's a new build.
14:29It looks like everything probably works just fine.
14:32Well, the property itself, you've got three bedrooms.
14:37Okay.
14:38Two and a half bath.
14:39Okay.
14:40A nice big garden.
14:41And it does come in at $2,200 a month.
14:43Wow.
14:44That's music to my ears.
14:45Come on in.
14:47And this is the living area.
14:50Wow.
14:51It's big, bright.
14:52I love the access to the garden.
14:55Yeah.
14:56You can open the doors.
14:57You know, the kids can play outside.
14:58And I can't believe how quiet it is.
15:00You close the door and you can't hear the motorway at all.
15:03The joys of double glazing in Scotland.
15:04Yeah.
15:05Yeah.
15:06No kidding.
15:07It is missing the fireplace that I was really hoping to have.
15:10You've got the blankets.
15:11That's true.
15:12I think Jessie, as a mother of the family, she wants to be comfortable and in the right fit.
15:17But her body language tells me she's not happy.
15:19Well, it leads quite nicely into the kitchen.
15:21So you could be cooking and still have the family in the living area.
15:26I really like it.
15:27Seems like we have all the modern amenities I was hoping for.
15:30Mm-hmm.
15:31I can understand it would be nice to curl up against a fire on a cold winter night.
15:36But this house, we could move right in, put all our stuff down and be really comfortable.
15:41So we just come up the stairs here.
15:43And then this is the family bathroom.
15:46Nice.
15:47Yeah, it's really nice.
15:48Big bathtub for Penelope.
15:50And then the fact that it's one of two full bathrooms.
15:53Exactly.
15:54Oh, yeah.
15:55Absolutely.
15:56Yeah.
15:57Okay.
15:58So we've got what would be Penelope's room there.
15:59And then this would be Jack's room.
16:01Oh, this is great.
16:03Yeah, Jack would love this.
16:04That doesn't really have that character I was looking for.
16:07That authentic Scottish charm.
16:10I think Jessie has said Scottish charm at least 312 times in the past eight hours.
16:16A girl knows what she wants.
16:18Scottish charm.
16:19But you can do stuff to make it more homely.
16:21Yeah, absolutely.
16:22And then this would be the main bedroom.
16:25Oh, this is really nice.
16:26Nice space.
16:27And I like how Penelope would be right next door.
16:29Would she just totter through in the morning?
16:31Yeah.
16:32Absolutely.
16:33Out we come into the garden.
16:36Nice and big.
16:37Yeah, big and spacious, isn't it?
16:39Yeah, it's really nice.
16:40Here in the motorway.
16:41Yes, you can.
16:42Pretty loud.
16:43But I do like the fact that it has the barbecue, a place to hang out when the weather's nice.
16:47Mm-hmm.
16:48I think overall the house is really nice.
16:50The savings is great.
16:52However, we have to consider, you know, purchasing a car since we're going to be a little bit further
16:56from the city center.
16:58I know.
16:59We get stuck in our ways and it's kind of hard convincing the other one to, you know, move to their side.
17:05You're not going to be able to find everything in the one property.
17:08So it's trying to figure out which one's going to be less happier and more accommodating.
17:13We could just move in.
17:15I feel like we would be really comfortable there.
17:17But outside of the city, it's one heck of a commute.
17:26Penelope!
17:28When you go through a traumatic life event, a lot of people's reactions revolve around, like,
17:34how are you feeling?
17:35So after years of that, you kind of want to move on with everything.
17:41It's exciting to meet people that don't know our background.
17:44It's raining a little, but I guess we've got to get used to that, huh?
17:48Yeah.
17:49While we were raising Jack, we were also renovating our house.
17:53Yeah.
17:54We learned how to work together as a team.
17:56So I think that will help us to compromise and figure out, you know,
18:00what's a necessity rather than a want.
18:03Should we talk about the rural detached house?
18:06Four bed?
18:07Five bath.
18:08We'd have space for the office.
18:10But very top of our spend.
18:12But like how fresh and new everything is.
18:15I do miss the Scottish charm.
18:17Just really far from city center, we would have to consider commuting costs.
18:21Yeah.
18:22All right, so the city center.
18:24The one that had the most Scottish charm.
18:26I love the wooden shutters.
18:27And of course the fireplace.
18:29It's really central to where I work.
18:31I've got all these restaurants and all the people walking.
18:33But it doesn't have four bedrooms.
18:35Only has one bathroom.
18:36But it's completely different than what we had in the States.
18:39The modern suburban house.
18:42I know you like the price point.
18:43That's music to my ears.
18:44I like that it was modern and clean.
18:46Doesn't really have that character I was looking for.
18:49But didn't have a fourth bedroom.
18:51And the noise from the motorway.
18:53Pretty loud.
18:54You can hear the traffic.
18:55It's very distracting.
18:56The modern suburban house.
19:09Price was a lot less.
19:10Price point was awesome.
19:11Yeah.
19:12But it was still a little too far for my liking.
19:15Yeah.
19:16If we're going to go outside of the city, I feel like we need a fourth bedroom.
19:19I agree.
19:22I think Royal Detached would be an easy fit.
19:26A lot of room.
19:27Good backyard.
19:28Extra bedroom for office space.
19:30We could just move in.
19:32I feel like we would be really comfortable there.
19:34But it's one heck of a commute.
19:35That's a good point.
19:36What we've been through, we were really hoping for a fresh start.
19:37That's true.
19:38And the detached house outside of the city, kind of similar to what we had in the States.
19:48Being in the city would be something completely different.
19:53We could be close to restaurants, all the parks.
19:57Yeah.
19:58I mean, you make a lot of valid points.
20:00You know, a fresh start would be really nice.
20:02I know it's not the new build that you were hoping for, but I was really hoping for that
20:07authentic Scottish charm.
20:08I could see our family living there.
20:11But it doesn't have that second bathroom.
20:13But it's a great savings.
20:15We could put that money towards other things.
20:18It does have a fireplace.
20:20It does have a fireplace.
20:21Which is pretty nice to have on a cold winter night.
20:24I think it might be a good fit.
20:27I like the way you think.
20:32Whoa.
20:33We decided to go with the traditional city center house.
20:39It's in the middle of everything.
20:41A lot of activities, shows, events.
20:45Adjusting to a smaller space has been challenging, but we're making it work.
20:51I started my own business as a virtual assistant.
20:53It's going really well.
20:54I work in the main bedroom, which is great because I'm able to look outside.
20:59All right guys, here comes the cobblestone.
21:01Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum.
21:03Not having to drive everywhere has been a life changer for me.
21:08I'm able to bike into work, which is amazing.
21:11There's so many restaurants we should go to.
21:15My health is great.
21:16I've never actually felt better.
21:18After dealing with such a traumatic experience for so many years, I think it's really nice
21:24to kind of experience the world and live every moment.
