00:00What makes a house a home? We ask the people of Scotland to enter their houses into Scotland's
00:07Home of the Year. Now our judges are visiting the top three from each region, choosing one
00:14each episode to go through to our national final. Scoring them on architectural merit,
00:20distinctive design and original style are architect Danny Campbell.
00:25What I'm looking for in a home is life, a liveable space framed by the energy and
00:31passion of the owners. Mall-based interior designer Banjo Beale.
00:35It's that combination of the best bits of your past, parts of your present and most importantly,
00:42room to grow. And interior designer Anna Campbell-Jones.
00:46It should be inspirational, atmospheric and accessible but have that most important ingredient, love.
00:55Ah, yes. I love it when a home matches my lipstick.
01:00I'm in heaven.
01:01In the end, only one can be Scotland's Home of the Year.
01:11Today our judges are visiting the shortlist in the West and they're starting with a colourful
01:16family home in Salt Coats. Seaside Conversion is home to Tracey, Scott and their kids Alfie, Blossom and Marley.
01:26It was pretty much a blank canvas, the house, so we came in and just tried to put our own stamp on it,
01:32our own style. Lots of colour. I think every room's like just been given a colour and we've just went with it.
01:38To be honest with you, most of the planning and design was by Tracey. I was just sent to the shop to pick up the paint.
01:50Next door I had a wee vision because I seen a nice cushion that I liked. I loved the print
01:55and I thought how cool would that be if we tried it on the wall. If it doesn't work out, it can shut the
01:59door. It's not a big deal. So we're not too keen and too seriously and we just like to experiment with
02:05the colours and textures and stuff. We're a good team. We've just done it all ourselves.
02:10Yeah. It's a lovely place to be and we're lucky to get to obviously live right beside the sea,
02:17which was always our dream. It's a happy home. It's definitely a happy home and it's perfect for us.
02:24On the first floor of this converted double upper, there's a kitchen, lounge, bathroom and three bedrooms.
02:34Upstairs, there's a dressing room, bedroom and ensuite.
02:39So this is our favourite spot in the home. We do everything here. Everybody's always around the
02:44table, Christmas dinners, board games, homework and we get to look out to the beautiful view.
02:52Armed with only the basic facts about the property and its owners,
02:56the judges now get their first proper look at seaside conversion.
03:03That's real peaches and cream, isn't it? It's a peachy beach house, isn't it?
03:07I think we've got a loft conversion on our hands. Sorry to take away from the beautiful setting with
03:10something so anal. Always looking for a loft conversion, aren't you?
03:14Well, should we get inside and get into that thought? Let's have a look.
03:25Oh, wow.
03:29Good vibes only.
03:32This has got stuff going on.
03:34And I love this little scullery nook in this amazing coral orange colour, just bringing kind
03:46of sunshine through that door. I think they're making up their own rules in here. They're picking
03:50out different colours to accentuate. I've never really seen that before. I'm loving this colour
03:56blocking, this dark colour surrounding the wall units and then continued with this band that goes
04:02all the way round. I'm quite relieved we come in here first, though, after all those colours
04:05come up the stairs. It's slightly more grounded, if I dare say it for this place.
04:09This is their happy place, I think. Well, that's what the sign says anyway.
04:16Sequence sewing room for you, Anna.
04:18Oh, that's gorgeous.
04:25Ha, ah.
04:28Mmm, more colour blocking. Wow. Yes, until you get to the window. That just frames that view.
04:34And I love it when they put a dining table in the bay. Design and dine.
04:38Oh, are you coining that first? That's it. Yeah. There's lots of upcycled pieces as well. They've
04:44really gone to town on that. It's glamorous, but just with a little g.
04:51I think it's interesting, though. I do love when people go dark on all the walls. Yeah. But to
04:57actually leave the window wall a different colour. Yeah. To just draw even more attention to really
05:03what this home is all about, which is this location. We didn't notice the heart. We were distracted by the
05:09view. Okay. Makes sense. Oh, yes. Because once you're in the bay, you can see even more. Like,
05:19almost like a 180-degree view of the sea. Yeah.
05:27Oh, wow. That's what I like. Dazzle. Black and white stripes. Yes.
05:34Ooh. This is like a dressing room at Wembley. This is where they put the big G on Glamorous,
05:41isn't it? I love the way they painted the reveal of the roof light in pink. Yeah.
05:46A really good little detail. What are those birds? Subtropical in there. Oh, let's have a look.
05:57Okay. Well, we've got a definite theme in here, haven't we? There's a lot of birds going on.
06:04This is the nest of the house, isn't it? Right at the top of the tree. Get the best view for the
06:07grown-ups. It is. It's a little crow's nest looking out to that view. Wilder's bar. It's
06:12sometimes hard to lay out a bedroom in a converted loft, but having it at the highest point really
06:17lets all the spaces flow around it. It's amazing, isn't it? You've got room for a sofa and a dressing
06:23table and the jewel aspect is just incredible. I do love how they've just made a feature of that
06:30wallpaper in the nook there. It's like a massive pop of colour, but it still feels like really nice
06:37and cosy, but big. It's like best of both worlds. I think they've even managed to fit an en suite up
06:42here as well. That's a really good way to add value to your property. It's not just an en suite,
06:46it's got a bath as well. It's huge. Wow. What a great use of a lower head space with the
06:53light coming in from that skylight. That's stunning.
06:59Hello, you. The cushion. See, pale pink and bright red is one of my favourite colour combinations.
07:10I feel like I want to steal this bed linen. Do it. She's just a little girl. You're a monster
07:16stealing up a little girl. Can't take you anywhere. Wow. I mean, it's kind of an insurance policy for the
07:25kid growing up to that navy blue as well. I think just change out the bed linen and this room will
07:31grow with the kids, so you're not having to update your room every six months. I feel like that blocking
07:37as well really accentuates all the height in here, which really makes the space. I think it's really
07:40clever the way the curtains are the same colour as this accent that they've used for the bed nook. So
07:45when you pull the curtains across, it kind of extends it outwards. The impact of that move would have been
07:52even better if the curtains went all the way to the floor. What will Anna, Banjo and Danny think of
07:58seaside conversion? One judges scored will be held back until they've seen all three homes when their
08:04combined scores will be revealed. This is a wild little family home. It's upside down. It's upcycled.
08:12It's painted all sorts of colours. It's just got birds and leopards and lots of greenery everywhere.
08:18It's a fun little home. I have a suspicion they've only just begun in here. There's a few blank walls,
08:24so I think they should go for it and really explore their wild side. I'm giving this home an eight.
08:33What a beautifully colourful family home. The homeowners clearly used the existing layout to
08:38explore lots of different creative ideas. I particularly enjoyed the interplay between the
08:42two staircases. That look down moment really connects the conversion to the body of the home.
08:48And the children's artwork leading you up to the principal bedroom is such a celebration of family
08:52life. I'm going to give this home an eighth. I really admire the way this homeowner has used
09:01their home like a paint palette to play with colour and pattern and texture. I adore the joie de vivre and
09:09the kind of let's just try it. Let's just see how it goes approach to the way this home has been
09:15decorated and it feels really fresh and sincere and fun.
09:19Next up is a traditional sandstone property in Helensborough. Victorian villa became a forever
09:34home to Shireen, William and their family in 2017 after years of living abroad.
09:41So we were looking for a place to settle down and William chose Helensborough because when
09:48he was a kid he used to come here for day trips and he loved it. You know when a house just speaks
09:54to you. It was huge. It's something we've never in our wildest dreams imagined we'd live here but
10:02it was cosy and homely so we just said yes to the house.
10:06So what I love about it is that it's old, it's got history. There's different pieces in here that
10:13belong to the past. I'm a bargain hunter as well as loving anything old. I don't throw anything away.
10:22Everything that's here has a history, has a memory of a friend or a place we visited.
10:28It's a house of love and fond memories.
10:37On the ground floor there are two living spaces, a dining room, two kitchens, a study and a conservatory.
10:45Upstairs there are seven bedrooms and three bathrooms.
10:51This is my favourite place because this is where the family gathers, this is where I have my quiet time,
10:58right here in the morning and we just have fun in here. It's a happening place and it's a peaceful place.
11:07But what will the judges think of Victorian villa?
11:13Splendid isn't it? This is pitching itself right. There's about five pitch roofs here.
11:19Pitch perfect.
11:21That front door is absolutely incredible. I think that might be the biggest hinges I've ever seen.
11:26Everything is supersized. That is the most beautiful orangery, isn't it?
11:31I know these double height windows as well. There's definitely a special space in there.
11:35Yes. Is it a church or a house?
11:38It looks like it's going to be a real warren of rooms inside.
11:41Shall we go and explore?
11:42Let's go.
11:54Wee! It's huge, isn't it? Oh my goodness.
11:58Still like a colonnade in one's entrance way, hey?
12:01Wee!
12:04You know, you can tell a lot about a building, where it's from, from its columns.
12:07So these Corinthian columns are giving sophistication, opulence, femininity, Anna Campbell Jones.
12:13I spy the little orangery through there, though. That is calling my name. Shall we go check it out?
12:19Yeah.
12:20Yeah.
12:20Yeah.
12:27Whoa, right. We need an orangery detour. Let's check this space out first.
12:32Hip stop.
12:32This is beautiful.
12:34Wow, little curiosity cabinet. I feel like they're very well travelled, these people, aren't they?
12:42I love the way the archway motif is carried all the way through from the entrance hall as well.
12:46This ornate coffered Victorian ceiling is absolutely beautiful. But I can see stained glass over there
12:52that looks more of a kind of Art Nouveau era. So this is obviously a building that has evolved over time.
13:04Oh, found my heart in Helmsborough. Not for the first time.
13:12Wow.
13:13Oh, this is lovely.
13:14Oh, yes.
13:15Oh, it's beautiful. What a spot.
13:19I'd have some tomatoes in here, though, eh?
13:21Yeah. My glass is a stamen.
13:24You know, when people bang on about indoor-outdoor living, it's all about big opening doors, open plan.
13:30But we've kept this compartmentalised and this is its own indoor-outdoor room.
13:34I can see why they love this place.
13:48Well, it's a cosy kitchen, actually, for such a big home.
13:51It's quite serious, isn't it, in here? With the black countertop and the rug.
13:56I'm not spilling anything here.
13:58But I suppose this is the kitchen where the staff would have been working, so that's why it's not
14:03given priority over views and light the way that the rooms at the front of the property house.
14:08Yeah. Is that their fridge? Where's their fridge?
14:14Oh, no.
14:14That's the jam cupboard.
14:16I'm good at sniffing out fridges. Let's find it.
14:18Ah, ah, there she is, fridge.
14:27Ah!
14:28Oh, it's more like it, a bit more natural light.
14:30Nice. Does that mean they get two dinners as well from the kitchen?
14:34This is a dream home.
14:35So that's more like a dining room, masquerading as a kitchen.
14:40But I also spot a dining room on the way in, and we've got the stools under the island as well.
14:45They've got options. I like that.
14:46Oh, wow.
14:56Whoa.
14:58Wow.
15:00Barrel vaulted bedroom.
15:02Yes.
15:03With stained glass windows at both ends.
15:06The feel that's got that kind of grass cloth texture on the wall makes it feel a little bit cosier.
15:12You know, a couple of strip lights in the coving there, you can imagine in the evening,
15:14this would be a really calm, serene space.
15:17No.
15:18Oh, yeah.
15:19100% no strip lights in the coving.
15:21No, I would, honestly.
15:22Which have some colour changing as well.
15:25You could bring your disco ball.
15:26Get out.
15:28I don't think this was originally intended as a bedroom.
15:31Does it not feel more like a kind of billiard room or something?
15:34I mean, you could have a bed and a billiard table in here and still have...
15:38That's what's missing.
15:39Mm.
15:40Billiard table.
15:41Don't tell the husband that.
15:43Or that is every straight bloke's dream.
15:49Is it?
15:49Yeah, isn't it?
16:00Wow.
16:01What a place to soak up the view.
16:04Oh, that's very good, Danny.
16:05You should write real estate blokes.
16:07Oh, I love this moody blue.
16:11It's lovely, isn't it?
16:13It's actually nice to see a bit of colour in this home, isn't it?
16:16These artefacts, having them in here as well, really does bring the space to life.
16:21Oh!
16:22Oh, actually, this is the perfect place to sit and soak up the view.
16:26Blue with the view.
16:27Yes, it's lovely.
16:28Yes, it ain't bug standard.
16:31How will the judges score Victorian Villa?
16:35Well, this is a really handsome, big home, steeped with history.
16:41I feel like if this home could talk, it would tell a lot of amazing stories.
16:46I've really enjoyed where the homeowners have pushed the boat out a little further with colour.
16:52The bathrooms in that beautiful dark bluey grey, they really complement the architecture of the building.
17:00I'm going to give this home an eight.
17:03This is an exquisite example of Victorian architecture.
17:06The ornamentation, the craftsmanship and the detailing really sets out the pedigree of this home.
17:12I particularly enjoyed the contrast between the collection of artwork and furniture
17:16and what that has with the building's heritage.
17:19However, I felt like the building has a sternness, a seriousness and rigidity
17:24that is most apparent in the kitchen spaces.
17:26I would have loved to have seen those joined together or relocated within the building
17:30to take advantage of more natural light and better views.
17:33I'm going to give this home an eight.
17:37This is arguably the most beautiful home.
17:41I think the first impression with that orangery and a grand facade is just magical.
17:48And you walk in the door, you get a real sense of where the owner's been.
17:52All of the objects in here feel like they have a story to tell.
17:56I think the next little thing would be maybe to bring more colour and texture into the space.
18:02The final home in the West is an extended family home in Giffnock.
18:11Sandstone Bungalow is home to Pamela, Gordon, their son Caleb and Rosa, the Irish setter.
18:18So the house is around about the 1930s and I think making sure that the design decisions
18:26that were made across the house reflected that sort of period but at the same time being a bit more modern.
18:31Yeah, we could rework things but we weren't in the habit of sort of stripping it out
18:36and just putting something new in for the sake of it.
18:39We wanted it colourful, bright and airy.
18:42A place really that we can enjoy as a family but also have people round.
18:46It's nice to just sort of gather and have the space to host people.
18:50It's a place that's quite inspiring to live in and I think it's somewhere that really sort of
18:57makes us feel connected as a family.
19:01On the ground floor there's a living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom and extended kitchen,
19:08dining, living space. Upstairs there's three bedrooms and a bathroom.
19:14This is my favourite spot in the home because it allows us to all come together and have fun.
19:19We get views out into the garden and in through the house so that we can all
19:24make sure that the kid and the dog are not misbehaving.
19:31Time for the judges to get their first view of the sandstone bungalow.
19:36Very well put together.
19:38I love this block planting with the beautiful strong colours.
19:40Oh yes.
19:42And I love the block work with the really strong pointing.
19:45I love blocks.
19:49It's obviously been altered with that dormer at some point,
19:52which means the interior arrangement has been played around with as well.
19:55I think I can see a side extension with some zinc cladding it looks like.
19:59Denny Campbell extension detective.
20:02Shall we go and investigate?
20:04Yes, let's do it.
20:15Beautiful.
20:18This panelling is absolutely beautiful and I love the way they've made it more contemporary by painting it
20:23and also by not placing decorative objects on that shelf all the way around.
20:27They've left it completely clear.
20:29It really highlights the height of the ceiling, doesn't it?
20:33And these two bay window rooms, they feel just like really lovely little boxes.
20:38One of my biggest bugbears with a bungalow is you enter into the central hallway with loads of doors
20:43and I love the way they've broken the symmetry by having that larger opening.
20:46And the herringbone floor is just dragging us through into that social space.
20:53Oh yes, we're in an extension.
20:56Ooh, gorgeous.
20:59And here's the hut.
21:00Oh yes.
21:01So unsurprisingly, this is the favourite spot.
21:04It's interesting, isn't it, to build an extension that's quite small but makes a really massive difference
21:11to how the whole home flows and feels.
21:14I think even though it is small, this sky lantern is dragging in so much natural light.
21:19It's just so lovely and bright in here and it's actually flooding it all the way into the hallway.
21:23Really bursts to life in this space, doesn't it?
21:26You've got the garden outside jumping in, the beautiful little petal glass pendants, the duck egg blue.
21:32Yeah, I could whip you guys up breakfast in here.
21:34What are we having?
21:36Yes, please.
21:36Pancakes.
21:44Ooh, beautiful.
21:46Blush and black, no greater combination.
21:49My living room is pale pink with a black painted floor, although my floor is not in as nearly good
21:56condition as this.
21:56Yes, your living room pales in comparison to this.
21:59I love these refined little borders. I feel like I'm inside a French fancy.
22:04Oh, yeah.
22:06I'm just hungry.
22:06Yeah, I'm always hungry. I see that.
22:09And you know, these finger plates on the way in are absolutely beautiful.
22:14I wonder if they're original.
22:15You know what? It's kind of Nana furniture, but it feels contemporary.
22:20Yeah, we've spoken before, haven't we, about how overlooked brown furniture often is.
22:24It's high quality, solid furniture that can be got for a real bargain, and it's beautiful in this space.
22:36Have a little seat.
22:37Oh, dark and stormy.
22:40They've flipped and reversed it in here, haven't they? Because they had light walls with a dark
22:45floor in one of the bay windowed rooms. And in this room, we've got a light floor with super,
22:50super dark walls.
22:51It's a grown up space, isn't it? You've got your pearl satin curtains, the charcoal walls,
22:56that really plush rug. It does feel like this is where you assemble after kind of 8pm.
23:03I think that the gold pendant and the gold mirror, it's a theme that's been running through all the
23:08different spaces and it's probably maybe built around that cladding they've got on the extension
23:12as well. It's like this is a motif that's kind of flowing through every room.
23:15Gold is their accent colour.
23:21Oh, lovely, sunny, serene bedroom.
23:24Yes, this is like Golden Girl, like these feel Miami, that beautiful window, the art deco dresser.
23:34I know, I'm sort of trying to take it all in. I think, I mean, these are quite old, aren't they?
23:38Yeah, they look like they could be original.
23:41If you look at the ironmongery as well, it's that same brass we've seen everywhere. I think these are
23:45original. I know closets. I spent quite a few years in one. They're original.
23:50These wall lights have that same ornate brass detailing. They've tied it in really beautifully
23:57into bringing this room back to life as well because it feels classy and it feels modern.
24:01It's got the connection to the outside, but there's all these little touch points to what the building
24:05used to be. I think that's the thing. They've resisted the temptation to rip out the old wardrobes,
24:10put some new built-ins in. They've worked with what they've got. They've brought in some furniture
24:15from the time. They've lent into it, but not a pastiche, and it works and it feels still
24:22contemporary. That's quite a feat. Yeah.
24:29Oh, this is cool, boys. Look at the blue loo. Oh, I love a blue loo. What a clever use of the
24:35split level. They've got clouds on the ceiling and a blue loo and a wavy vanity top and you're
24:43talking about split level. I love the way they've built out some shape into this space as well and
24:46they've pulled that pendant right into the corner. Yeah, that's properly original and I'm so glad they
24:51kept that because that is the coolest little feature. That's the thing. Keep your old features.
24:57You never know when it'll come back in. What will the judges score at Sandstone Bungalow?
25:04There's a temptation when acquiring an older property to completely revamp everything. I've really enjoyed
25:10the lightness of touch shown in this home, whether that's through necessity or through sensitivity,
25:16it works so well. This home manages to be both gentle and classy at the same time, whilst also
25:25clearly being a family home that's well used and well loved. I'm going to give this home a 10.
25:30I love how they've retained the original features here. They've added new things,
25:38splashes of colour, an extension, but it all works perfectly. It's blooming beautiful.
25:44I'm giving this home a 10.
25:50I've been in an extension dream today. The owners have solved the gloomy bungalow lobby
25:55with a beautiful solution. By creating a larger opening from the hallway into the kitchen space,
26:01they built a hierarchy around the main social part of the home, bringing nature and light
26:07deep into the core of the building. The gold cladding wasn't initially to my taste,
26:14but I can see why it's been chosen. They've painstakingly restored so many ornate brass features
26:20around the home, retaining some of the original character of the building.
26:27Now that the judges have seen all three homes, the final scores can be revealed. First, it was
26:33seaside conversion in salt coats. Danny, you gave it an eight. And Banjo, you gave it an eight as well.
26:44I really enjoyed the adventurous fun that these homeowners were having.
26:49It just felt like they weren't worrying too much about necessarily getting everything right first
26:54time, just really playing with colour and pattern and upcycling in this really, really joyful family
27:00home. So I gave the seaside conversion a nine. Oof, that's a good start. Yeah, I give seaside
27:07conversion 25. Beautiful score. Next up, Victorian Villa in Helensborough.
27:15I gave it an eight. And Danny, you gave it an eight as well. Banjo, what did you think of it?
27:24Oh, it was a grand dame of a property. Pitch perfect from the outside. That orangery was a showstopper.
27:31Inside, packed full of all their trinkets from their travels. I gave it an eight.
27:35Ooh, three eights, which gives the Victorian Villa 24. And finally, Sandstone Bungalore in Gifflok.
27:47Banjo, you gave it a 10. And I gave it a 10 as well. Danny?
27:54Well, I thought this home was an exemplar of the power of an extension and how it can be used to bring a
