00:00O que você diz?
00:01O que você diz?
00:03O que o diabo vive aqui.
00:04O que o diabo fala?
00:05Nesse dia no ID.
00:21Essa é uma e-mail que Jaime sentou a uma amiga.
00:26Ela diz,
00:27eu tenho um dia ruim e um dia bom.
00:28Good days are when I don't break down and cry.
00:33Those days are few and far between.
00:36Police are asking for your help finding a missing Chandler woman.
00:4032-year-old Jamie Laidadi was reported missing yesterday.
00:45Sorry I was so abrupt to you today, but I've been trying to distance myself from everyone.
00:50I'm just so emotional lately that I will start crying over nothing.
00:53And I can't stand people feeling sorry for me anymore.
00:57I'm just so tired.
01:01She never said anything about any of this to any of us.
01:07I had no idea that things were this emotional.
01:12This is...
01:14This is difficult to look at actually.
01:27I'm not...
01:31. . .
02:01. . .
02:31Dispatchers at the Chandler, Arizona, Police Department get an odd call.
02:39Parents of Jamie Laeti have just made a disturbing discovery.
02:43They say nobody has seen their daughter in two and a half months.
02:46Detective Nathan Moffat is assigned to investigate the case.
02:56I was on call Memorial Day weekend in 2010 and got called in by the person's crime sergeant
03:02in regards to a missing person's case.
03:05The sergeant informed me that they're working a missing person's case
03:10where a female, a 32-year-old female, had been missing for about 10 weeks.
03:16The hair on the back of my neck did stand up because you're 10 weeks behind the eight ball.
03:20I mean, it's, you're so far behind the start of the investigation.
03:25The trail is almost already cold.
03:33Detective Moffat wonders why her family waited so long to call police.
03:43Jamie's father says his daughter was estranged.
03:46Jamie's parents didn't have any information on where she might be at the time.
04:14Her father said that he didn't talk to his daughter very often.
04:31How's work?
04:32It's fine.
04:36We haven't heard from you in a while.
04:40Not talking about this right now.
04:41Let's just have a nice dinner.
04:46When you hear about somebody that isn't close with their family, it just makes you wonder why.
05:01Jamie's parents don't provide much useful information.
05:05In search of clues, Moffat pays a visit to the missing woman's home.
05:12We peeked in windows initially, actually looked into the garage because the garage had the windows up at the top.
05:18Her vehicle was there.
05:20Motor vehicle records show Jamie has two cars, but one is missing from the garage.
05:27And when there's no answer at the door, police have only one option to get inside.
05:36We actually forced entry into the house to look around.
05:39As we went into the house, we were real fresh in this investigation, anything's possible.
05:52So we were just kind of looking for any evidence that would help us lead to finding her.
05:56The house was, for lack of better words, unkempt.
06:04It was kind of in disarray.
06:05There was a bunch of mail on the table and that kind of stuff.
06:09It wasn't dirty, but just kind of cluttered a little bit.
06:13That being said, there was no obvious signs of, like, a clean-up if there had been a violent encounter there.
06:21So no signs of fresh cleaning or anything like that.
06:25When you work a case like this, a missing persons case, anything's possible.
06:29I have seen people walk away from their lives before.
06:33A lot of times it's somebody that's just fed up with their home situation and they want to make a new start, so they'll leave.
06:43To detectives, at first, it seems possible that Jamie left of her own accord.
06:55Refrigerator's empty.
06:57But a further search of her home leads them to question their initial hunch.
07:03She had a lot of clothing, a lot of items, a lot of stuff that was left behind,
07:08which didn't make sense for somebody who was just going to move out of town.
07:13With no clues inside the home as to Jamie's whereabouts,
07:28Moffett enlists the help of Detective Jason Scout.
07:32I was the on-call detective for the Financial Crimes Unit,
07:35and very briefly they said,
07:38we're investigating a missing person.
07:40Can you see what you can dig up?
07:45See if she's been using her credit card, checking emails.
07:48We need to establish a better point of when did Jamie go missing.
07:53See what I can do.
07:55Thanks.
07:55While Detective Scoutin sets out to retrace Jamie's financial activity,
08:07Moffett turns to her personal life.
08:08We start putting together the timeline of who she is,
08:13where she's been, where she's from, and that kind of stuff.
08:17The detectives call Jamie's friends,
08:19who suggest that she may have simply moved.
08:22Moffett is surprised to learn that it isn't out of the ordinary
08:37for Jamie to leave town without a word to anyone.
08:42Jamie was such a private person, and she would kind of disappear,
08:46but she would always reappear and resurface eventually.
08:51In general, it was not unusual for us to not hear from her
08:55for several months at a time.
08:57But Jamie's friends admit she rarely, if ever,
09:02revealed where she would disappear to,
09:04leaving investigators to wonder
09:07what secrets was their missing person harboring?
09:11Detective Moffett's interest is piqued
09:18when he finds out that wherever Jamie is,
09:21she might not be alone.
09:23I asked her if I was going to go with her.
09:27She said probably.
09:29Turns out Jamie has a boyfriend named Brian.
09:36But just like Jamie,
09:38Brian quickly proves difficult to track down.
09:43It's urgent that you call us back.
09:47The original patrol officers left multiple messages for him.
09:51Now it had been, you know, several hours,
09:54and he still hadn't called us back.
09:56Anything yet?
09:58Nothing.
09:59This is good.
10:01It took Jamie's family an alarmingly long time
10:05to report her missing.
10:06And now her boyfriend
10:08is nowhere to be found.
10:11Nothing was adding up.
10:13It was very, very suspicious.
10:15Nobody, friends, family, associates, or anything,
10:18nobody had heard from them in quite a long time.
10:22As a detective,
10:23you know this is not your run-of-the-mill
10:24missing person investigation.
10:26Jamie was a very private person.
10:49I only once asked her about her background,
10:52and she cut me off.
10:55She said,
10:56I don't talk about that.
10:59I never knew anything about Jamie's parents
11:02or her sister.
11:03Nothing.
11:06Never talked about them.
11:09Help me to find my daughter, please.
11:13As far as I knew,
11:14Jamie existed from the day I met her.
11:17No one has heard from Jamie Laity
11:36in ten weeks.
11:41Detective Moffat is desperate
11:43to piece together her mysterious life.
11:45I talk to Jamie's parents
11:49on a regular basis.
11:52In fact,
11:53I have their home phone number memorized today.
11:57When's the last time
11:58you actually talked to Jamie?
12:01About nine years or something.
12:03My wife and me tell her
12:04to go back to school again.
12:06You know, when she graduated from Michigan?
12:08Uh-huh.
12:09Yeah, and she said,
12:11she don't want to go back to school again.
12:14Okay.
12:15And after that,
12:15I didn't talk to her a thing.
12:18Any idea why she's so mad at you?
12:20Yeah, because, you know, like,
12:22I don't know, like,
12:24she thought, you know,
12:25I loved, you know,
12:27the old daughter than her.
12:29Jamie's relationship with her parents
12:34was strained.
12:37The only thing that I could tell
12:38is her parents
12:39were very, very driven.
12:42They wanted Jamie
12:43to continue on
12:44to medical school.
12:46But she didn't want
12:46to go to medical school,
12:47she wanted to do her own thing.
12:49But where is Jamie
12:58and her boyfriend?
13:00And what secrets
13:01are they hiding?
13:07Friends tell detectives
13:09that right before she disappeared,
13:12Jamie hit a rough patch.
13:14I believe in the fall of 2009,
13:19around her birthday,
13:21she lost her job.
13:24We knew she was looking
13:26quite feverishly for a job.
13:29She portrayed that she was
13:31close to destitution.
13:35I think it was an emotional blow
13:38to Jamie to lose her job.
13:39Friends tell detectives
13:43that while Jamie seemed
13:45withdrawn during this time...
13:47Man, what's going on?
13:49What happened?
13:50Her boyfriend, Brian,
13:52was by her side.
13:54No one's gonna hire me.
13:55What are you talking about?
13:56Of course they're gonna hire you.
13:58You don't understand.
14:01Look, hey,
14:02listen to me, all right?
14:04It's going to be fine.
14:06You're brilliant.
14:07You're talented.
14:08You're beautiful.
14:10Any job out there,
14:11you're gonna get
14:11snatched right up.
14:14Thanks, Brett.
14:15Hey, come here.
14:17Don't worry about it.
14:18They're right.
14:20They were very well suited
14:22towards one another.
14:26They played their humor
14:28off of one another
14:29and they got along.
14:31He was very solicitous
14:33of her answering
14:34to her needs.
14:35offering to refill her drinks
14:39and things like that.
14:42At some point,
14:44Ryan said Jamie was the one
14:46and he wanted to marry her
14:47and at some point she said,
14:49well,
14:49I can't envision myself
14:52with anyone but him.
14:53but where
14:58is the couple now?
15:09Hours after Jamie
15:11is reported missing,
15:13neither she
15:13nor Brian
15:14have returned calls
15:16from the police.
15:17Moffitt decides
15:25to look for another way
15:27to locate Brian.
15:29But strangely,
15:31an address search
15:32yields Jamie's
15:33Chandler, Arizona home
15:35as the only result.
15:37There was no evidence
15:43when we examined
15:44the house
15:44that Brian lived
15:46at that house.
15:51So we didn't have
15:52any information
15:52on where to find him.
15:53with no other clues.
16:04Detectives wonder
16:05if Jamie's missing vehicle
16:06holds the key
16:07to her whereabouts.
16:10We knew Jamie owned
16:10a 1999 Honda Accord
16:12and a 2007 Ford Escape SUV.
16:16The 1999 Honda Accord
16:18was accounted for
16:19in her garage.
16:21The Ford Escape
16:22was outstanding.
16:32Detectives decide
16:33to try and track it down.
16:36License plate readers
16:37are deployed
16:38on some police vehicles,
16:40on a lot of tow trucks.
16:42It's basically equipment
16:43that just reads
16:44all the license plates
16:45as it passes.
16:46It runs the license plate
16:47and if the vehicle
16:48comes up stolen,
16:49it automatically alerts
16:50the officer.
16:51Police scan
16:52in the streets
16:53for Jamie's car
16:54and incredibly,
16:56they get a hit.
16:58A match from Jamie's
17:00missing SUV
17:01is detected.
17:05But it isn't
17:06in another state.
17:08It's only 18 miles away
17:10in Scottsdale, Arizona.
17:12could the missing couple
17:15have been less than
17:1620 miles away
17:17all along?
17:25A detective
17:26identified a possible address
17:28where the license plate
17:29reader database
17:30had showed Jamie's vehicle,
17:32which was a gated condo complex.
17:33an officer stakes out the location.
17:40Then, in the late evening,
17:43Jamie's SUV pulls up to the gate.
17:45But no one is prepared
17:50for what they find
17:51behind the wheel.
17:54He followed the SUV
17:56and he contacted
17:57the male driver.
18:00He identified himself
18:01verbally
18:02as Brian Stewart.
18:05It's Jamie's boyfriend
18:06behind the wheel.
18:07So, where's Jamie?
18:12He said,
18:12well,
18:13I'm her ex-boyfriend.
18:15She moved to Colorado
18:16about 10 weeks ago
18:16and I haven't heard
18:17or seen from her since.
18:20Look, I'm telling you
18:21she's fine, all right?
18:21She's not missing.
18:24But officers
18:25don't like his story.
18:28Or the fact that
18:29he's driving
18:30a missing person's car.
18:31and they take him in
18:37on a suspended license.
18:52Brian?
18:52Yes.
18:53Hey, I'm Nate Moffitt.
18:54How are you, man?
18:56Not very good.
18:58Brian wasn't in any trouble
18:59with me at that time.
19:00He was under arrest
19:01for driving
19:02on a suspended license.
19:03We didn't find anything
19:04at the house
19:05that was alarming.
19:06As far as a crime scene
19:08or were,
19:09Jamie being a victim
19:09of a violent crime,
19:11I didn't have any evidence
19:12of any foul play.
19:14But I wanted to get
19:15into the meat and potatoes
19:16of why we were there
19:17and that's,
19:18Jamie was missing
19:18and I needed to find her.
19:21So, I started focusing
19:23on him and Jamie.
19:25The backdrop to this story
19:26is that she hated
19:28living in Arizona.
19:29Okay.
19:30and she wanted out
19:31really bad.
19:32Okay.
19:35She had accepted a job
19:37and I don't remember
19:40the name of the company.
19:41Cares.
19:41Brian told me
19:42that on March 17th,
19:45he and Jamie
19:46had a conversation
19:47that Jamie was moving
19:48out of state
19:49that they were breaking up.
19:52Brian says that
19:53though Jamie wasn't pleased,
19:55they spent one last night
19:57together
19:58on March 17th.
20:02When I left
20:03at 345,
20:05she was sleeping.
20:09I know
20:09because I kissed her
20:10on the floor.
20:13After that,
20:14I don't know.
20:17What she did
20:18during the day,
20:19she could have went
20:20anywhere.
20:20I don't know.
20:28Brian also says
20:30that Jamie gave him
20:31her second car
20:32as a parting gift.
20:34But that strikes
20:35Moffat
20:36as strange.
20:37I don't trust him.
20:41I'm very suspicious
20:42of him.
20:43And at this point,
20:44I'm now very concerned
20:45for Jamie's will be.
20:47I'll ask you
20:47one more time.
20:48Did you hurt Jamie?
20:49No.
20:50Did you have anything
20:51to do with her disappearance?
20:52No.
21:01Detectives still
21:02don't have any proof
21:03that Brian is involved
21:05in Jamie's disappearance.
21:07And they haven't yet
21:08ruled out his claim
21:10that she moved
21:11to Colorado.
21:14But unless Moffat
21:15can find something else
21:16to charge him with,
21:19Brian will soon
21:20be free to leave.
21:23The only person
21:24that we knew of
21:25that might have
21:25information on
21:26where Jamie was
21:27was Brian Stewart.
21:30I didn't trust
21:31if Brian were
21:32to bond out of jail
21:33that I would ever
21:33see him again.
21:37The hardest aspect
21:42was knowing
21:43that we cannot
21:44let him go
21:44or he's gone
21:45and we have nothing.
21:46That was
21:47incredibly stressful.
21:49We need to find
21:50something fast.
21:52That was the hardest
21:53part of the case,
21:54almost feeling like
21:55it was an out-of-body
21:56experience.
22:04Investigators get
22:05a warrant
22:06to search
22:06Brian's home.
22:09And right away,
22:11they're stunned
22:12by what they find.
22:14Why don't you
22:14check down the hall?
22:16Let's get a couple
22:17shots in there.
22:18It was very meticulous.
22:20Everything was in order.
22:21almost OCD-like.
22:25You know,
22:26everything had its place.
22:29When you entered
22:30the door,
22:31the room immediately
22:32to your left
22:33was being utilized
22:34as an office.
22:36A quick examination
22:37of that office,
22:38we saw a woman's
22:39wallet on the desk.
22:44Upon further examination,
22:46we found a white envelope
22:47full of something
22:50that we couldn't
22:51tell what it was.
22:59We found Jamie's
23:00license cut up
23:01in somewhere
23:02between 30 and 40 pieces.
23:07We saw two
23:08of Jamie's credit cards.
23:13Why did Brian
23:14have those credit cards?
23:15Why are they up
23:16at his apartment?
23:17what has been going on?
23:19If she supposedly
23:20moved out of state,
23:21why doesn't she
23:22have her credit cards?
23:23You're broken up.
23:24Why are you
23:25in possession of them?
23:31Then detectives find
23:32what Brian's been
23:33using Jamie's
23:34credit cards for.
23:38The receipts
23:39were for adult
23:40dating websites
23:41and other equipment
23:43that very clearly
23:45it was Brian
23:46who had conducted
23:47these transactions
23:48and not Jamie.
23:50In fact,
23:51the night that
23:51we were trying
23:52to contact Brian,
23:53he was out
23:54on a date
23:56that he had met
23:56on a dating website
23:57that was paid for
23:58by Jamie's card.
23:59But detectives still
24:06have no idea
24:07what happened
24:08to Jamie
24:09until Scouting
24:11unearths
24:12a new clue.
24:14You're not going to believe
24:15what I just found.
24:17And they're about
24:18to discover
24:19that the darkest secrets
24:21are still lurking
24:22below the surface.
24:23Why would he have
24:25another person's
24:25divorce papers?
24:26It was looking
24:27like the worst
24:28case scenario.
24:30You know
24:31on the back
24:31of your mind
24:32I'm probably
24:33collecting evidence
24:34right now
24:34for a possible
24:35homicide case.
24:37When I see
24:38this stuff,
24:39my thinking
24:39is,
24:40is this another
24:41victim I just found?
24:48Thursday
24:48on ID.
24:50They look
25:03like they're
25:04pretty content.
25:05I don't know
25:05when this was taken,
25:07but, yeah,
25:07they look like
25:08they're together.
25:11Mm-hmm.
25:13It's a cute picture
25:14of her.
25:15Jamie was bright
25:18and bubbly
25:19and her eyes
25:19sparkled
25:20when she walked
25:21into the room.
25:22Her smile
25:23went from ear to ear.
25:25She was bouncy
25:26and happy.
25:29And she was
25:30very kind.
25:33I think people
25:34did hope
25:35that she would
25:35be found alive,
25:36but I was
25:37convinced
25:38by this time
25:40that she was gone.
25:41Detectives
26:09are quickly
26:10uncovering
26:11strange clues
26:12in Brian Stewart's
26:14Scottsdale apartment,
26:15starting with
26:17his birth certificate.
26:20This right here
26:21is a photocopy
26:22of the actual
26:23birth certificate
26:24that I found
26:25in his apartment.
26:27It's all handwritten,
26:29but one thing
26:29is I know
26:30most birth certificates
26:31are usually
26:31going to be typed out.
26:33It looked like
26:34it was trying
26:35to be what
26:36we'd refer to
26:37as a certified copy.
26:39That seemed fishy.
26:40It seems that
26:43Brian Stewart
26:44is embroiled
26:45in some sort
26:46of fraud.
26:49As the search
26:50continues,
26:51their suspicions
26:52are heightened.
26:53I find a U.S.
26:56postal envelope
26:57that's addressed
26:58to a Rick Wayne
26:59Valentini
27:00to another address
27:01in Scottsdale.
27:02Who's Rick Valentini?
27:05My first initial
27:06thought was
27:06maybe Brian Stewart
27:08stole some mail,
27:09maybe he victimized
27:10them in the past
27:11by stealing credit cards,
27:12and I noticed
27:14that there's
27:14a divorce decree
27:16for a Rick Valentini.
27:19This isn't adding up.
27:21Why does he
27:21have this in here?
27:26Detectives
27:27immediately track
27:27down Valentini's
27:29ex-wife
27:29and give her a call.
27:33We met in Michigan,
27:34we got married,
27:35and then he left
27:36and went to Arizona.
27:37Okay.
27:38He had
27:38stole a lot
27:40of money
27:41and credit card money
27:42from my father,
27:44and he left.
27:45When he resurfaced,
27:47he told me
27:47that he was going
27:48to go under
27:48a different name,
27:49he wanted a new life.
27:51And that new life
27:52goes with a new name,
27:54Brian Stewart.
27:57He eventually
27:58admitted to her
27:59that he made up
28:01the name Brian Stewart.
28:02She suspected
28:02he wanted to get away
28:03possibly from
28:04some child support.
28:05He apparently
28:06had a bad family situation.
28:08He wanted to leave
28:09all that behind.
28:11Investigators
28:11are floored,
28:12but assuming
28:14a false identity
28:15isn't the only
28:16skeleton
28:17in Brian's closet.
28:20Have you ever known
28:21Rick to be violent?
28:23Yes.
28:26Can you explain
28:27that to me
28:27a little bit?
28:30One time,
28:31we did get into
28:32a really big fight.
28:33Oh, stop yelling at me.
28:34You wouldn't want
28:35to make me look like a fool.
28:36No, I haven't seen that.
28:36You want to make me
28:37look like a fool.
28:38I don't even know
28:38who you are.
28:39And he did hit me.
28:42He did grab me
28:45by the hair.
28:46What's wrong with you?
28:47Don't you turn away
28:48from me when I'm talking.
28:49Do you understand me?
28:50Do you understand me?
28:54Rick Valentini
28:55is a con man
28:57with a history
28:58of violence.
28:59What are you crying about?
29:00What are you crying about?
29:00What are you crying about?
29:01What are you crying about?
29:02What are you crying about?
29:04What are you crying about?
29:12The evidence of fraud
29:18is enough to keep him
29:19in custody.
29:22But detectives still
29:24are no closer
29:26to finding Jamie.
29:28The situation was urgent
29:30because we need
29:31to get more information
29:32about Jamie.
29:33We need to find out
29:34what's going on.
29:36Is she in distress?
29:38Is she already a victim?
29:40Is she just gone?
29:50Then, a review
29:52of Brian's belongings
29:53uncovers yet another clue.
29:56I noticed that there was
30:04a bank account statement
30:05and one of the first things
30:06I noticed was
30:08on the very first page
30:09of the transaction
30:09appeared to be a payment
30:11to a storage facility.
30:15We need to get on this
30:16right away.
30:17One of the detectives
30:18was immediately
30:19on the phone
30:20trying to see
30:21if we could look up
30:22the address
30:23or determine
30:24where the facility was
30:25to identify it
30:26and get somebody
30:28over there
30:28immediately to secure it.
30:35In my experience
30:36in law enforcement,
30:37you hear some
30:38of the craziest stories.
30:39You hear of bodies
30:41being recovered
30:42out of storage units.
30:43I guess it was
30:46that final moment
30:48that your gut was right
30:49and that something bad
30:51had happened to Jamie
30:51and he was responsible.
31:00Police find
31:01the storage unit
31:02and send officers
31:04to investigate.
31:07But they don't find
31:08what they're looking for.
31:09There's no body.
31:13The dead end
31:14is not finding Jamie.
31:16Instead,
31:17they find alarming clues.
31:21They found
31:22a sawed-off shotgun
31:23just inside
31:24the storage unit.
31:27A shovel
31:29with kind of
31:30clumped up dirt on it.
31:32And near both
31:34of those items
31:34there was a roll
31:35of the thick
31:36six-mil plastic liner.
31:39The evidence
31:41is circumstantial
31:42at best.
31:43We didn't have
31:45a true crime scene.
31:47We didn't have
31:47any biological evidence
31:48that Jamie was murdered.
31:50And we didn't have a body.
31:54Talk about
31:55battling uphill.
32:03But Detective Moffat
32:05thinks he's found
32:06something useful,
32:08a possible motive.
32:09a deeper dive
32:14into the credit card records
32:16shows that Jamie
32:17once ran
32:18a background check
32:20on her boyfriend.
32:23Could it be
32:25that she caught wind
32:26of Brian's real identity?
32:28I think Jamie
32:34was a smart girl.
32:36And I think
32:37that there was
32:37probably
32:38inconsistencies
32:40that she probably
32:40noticed,
32:41you know,
32:42in minor conversation.
32:45But if Jamie
32:46had uncovered
32:47the truth
32:48about her boyfriend,
32:50detectives
32:51have no proof.
32:52they're in desperate need
32:57of a smoking gun.
33:00You know,
33:00for me,
33:01the person has to be
33:02found guilty
33:02beyond a reasonable doubt.
33:04And for me,
33:05as a detective,
33:06I want to be one step
33:07beyond a reasonable doubt.
33:08then the unthinkable
33:13happens.
33:15Basically,
33:16you know,
33:16he admits,
33:17yeah,
33:17but how are they
33:18going to charge me with it?
33:19So he says that
33:19all the time.
33:21And that was,
33:23for me,
33:24the aha moment
33:25of we got it.
33:44We think this is
33:45a good shot of Jamie
33:46because it's just
33:46how she looked every day.
33:49I did reflect back
33:51on every interaction
33:52I had with him.
33:54And I tried to put
33:55the pieces together
33:56and connect the dots.
33:59Who is this person?
34:01What did he say?
34:02What did he do?
34:03What could I have noticed?
34:04What could I have
34:05found out sooner?
34:07What could I have done?
34:25I think you killed
34:27your ex-girlfriend.
34:29There's no way.
34:31There is plenty of way.
34:32You had two months
34:33to do with
34:34whatever you wanted
34:34with her.
34:38I'm going to ask you
34:38one more time.
34:40If you had anything
34:40to do with
34:41Jamie disappearing.
34:42He was a mystery
34:46that for Jamie's case
34:48we need to figure out
34:49sooner rather than later.
34:59Detective Nathan Moffat
35:00is determined
35:02to build his case
35:03against Rick Valentini.
35:06In lieu of hard evidence,
35:08he has a theory.
35:09He believes
35:12that when Jamie
35:13conducted
35:13a background check
35:15on Brian,
35:16it was her ultimate
35:17undoing.
35:18Why are you
35:19lying to me?
35:20I'm not lying to you.
35:21Oh, so what is it
35:22that you're doing
35:22right now?
35:23It's my opinion
35:24that what happened
35:26was he and Jamie
35:27were breaking up.
35:28He was moving.
35:29That's why
35:30we are not together.
35:31Do you understand that?
35:32Jamie probably
35:33challenged him on,
35:35by the way,
35:36I'm calling the cops
35:36and saying you're not
35:37at who you say you are.
35:38I don't understand
35:39why you're so upset
35:40if you're the one
35:40who wants to break up
35:41to begin.
35:42I don't even know
35:42who you are.
35:44Rick.
35:47Jamie was going
35:48to call the police
35:49because she didn't
35:50believe Brian was Brian.
35:57He had to have
35:58killed Jamie.
35:59who has a sawed-off shotgun,
36:09a shovel with clumped-up dirt
36:12on it,
36:13and the big roll
36:14of thick plastic
36:15just inside the storage unit.
36:17Moffat is convinced
36:32that Valentini shot Jamie
36:35and then buried her
36:36somewhere in the Arizona desert.
36:41But without the most
36:43important piece of evidence,
36:44proving it would be
36:46next to impossible.
36:49We had a lot of weapons,
36:50but we didn't have a body.
36:53We didn't have evidence
36:54of a crime scene.
36:57But I need to know for sure.
36:59You know,
37:00I felt very strongly about it,
37:01but to ensure
37:02that we had a good case,
37:03we were just kind of
37:04missing pieces of the puzzle
37:05that needed to be answered.
37:06The only person
37:16with the answers
37:17is Rick Valentini.
37:21When people are in jail,
37:23they tend to talk a lot.
37:26Inmates typically
37:26or arrestees
37:28will kind of rely on
37:30their bunkmates
37:31and cellmates
37:32and kind of bounce things
37:34off of them
37:34and talk to them
37:35about their case.
37:37I just need to know
37:38how close they are.
37:40This inmate
37:41that was housed with him
37:41later reached out
37:42to us through
37:43his defense attorney
37:44and provided a statement.
37:47He told me,
37:48I wish I knew
37:49where they were looking.
37:50You know what I mean?
37:51Like he said,
37:51wonder where you guys
37:52are looking for the body at.
37:53If you guys are getting warm or...
37:55He said that he was crying.
37:57The cops know I did it.
37:59I mean,
37:59the cops know.
38:02Right?
38:02Then they know
38:03I killed my girlfriend.
38:06But they can't convict me
38:08without a body, right?
38:11That was, for me,
38:13the aha moment
38:15of we got it.
38:17We have what we need.
38:19I am now thoroughly convinced
38:21that he killed her.
38:23Jamie Laity's murder.
38:29Though they still don't know
38:31exactly how Jamie died
38:33or where she was buried,
38:35they now have enough evidence
38:37to prove that Rick Valentini
38:39is guilty of homicide.
38:43In March 2011,
38:46he is charged
38:47with Jamie Laity's murder.
38:49Jamie was killed
38:57and Brian did it.
39:00And I was like,
39:01what?
39:02Brian did it?
39:04How do we know he did it?
39:05Why did he do it?
39:09I'm trying real hard
39:10to keep my emotions in check
39:12during all of this,
39:13but it's just kind of
39:15tumbling around in my head
39:16that my friend is dead
39:19and what am I going
39:20to do with that?
39:22It was really this moment
39:24of disbelief.
39:26I wanted to disbelieve it.
39:28And they're telling me,
39:29no, he really did this.
39:31And I said,
39:32are you sure?
39:35Yes, we're really sure
39:36that he did this.
39:40There's a sinking feeling
39:41in your gut
39:42when you're confronted
39:43with this evidence
39:44that a person
39:45you thought you knew
39:46is not who they say
39:47they are.
39:50And so you then
39:51start to question
39:52who else isn't
39:53who they say they are.
39:55This guy had his story down.
39:58Up until this point,
40:00I believed pretty much
40:01all of it.
40:04It does question
40:05your own sense of judgment
40:07when you find out
40:09something like this
40:10has happened.
40:11We're supposed
40:12to be educated people
40:13and we didn't catch this.
40:15And how could we not know?
40:17How could we be so naive?
40:19So I took it to heart,
40:20like, boy,
40:21I should have,
40:22should have done this.
40:22I would have,
40:23could have,
40:23should have.
40:24I went through
40:25that whole thing.
40:29Brian Stewart,
40:30who you're also going
40:30to see on this flyer,
40:32being held right now
40:33on 10 different charges.
40:35Police found multiple guns
40:36in his place.
40:37still without a body,
40:40prosecutor Juan Martinez
40:42has his work
40:43cut out for him.
40:45It is challenging
40:46in the sense
40:47that you have to show
40:48that this individual
40:49did not decide
40:51or make a conscious effort
40:53to just leave.
40:56No one disappears
40:57from the face of the earth,
40:58not in this day and age,
41:00without leaving a trace.
41:01I had the belief
41:05that this woman
41:06had been killed
41:07and that he was
41:08the person
41:08who had done it.
41:11The jury agrees.
41:15At sentencing,
41:17her family asks
41:18for justice.
41:20I feel I have
41:20a big hole in my heart
41:22that's never filled up.
41:26She's my only sister.
41:28I feel very alone now.
41:29Despite being convicted
41:30of murder,
41:31Valentini claims
41:32he's innocent.
41:33Not only is Jamie Liety alive,
41:35she is out of state
41:36and living incognito
41:37because of her fear
41:40and hatred
41:41for her father.
41:43The judge sentenced him
41:45to 22 years
41:46for Jamie's murder
41:47in addition to another
41:4832 years
41:49on other fraud
41:50and weapons charges.
41:53I just smiled
41:55because I knew
41:56he was never getting out.
42:00Rick Valentini still holds
42:07one last secret
42:09that may never be revealed.
42:11He made a statement
42:12post-trial
42:13that he was the only one
42:15who knew what happened
42:16and he's the only one
42:18who knew why it happened.
42:21And to me,
42:21that was a statement
42:23basically saying
42:24that he will take it
42:25to his grave.
42:26I think Valentini
42:29being the only person
42:30who knew what happened
42:31is just kind of a...
42:34It's a power play.
42:37It's his way
42:39of holding the last chip.
42:46And I think he...
42:48That's the only thing
42:49he can hold on to now
42:50or he has to hold on to
42:52is that he's the only one
42:53who knew what happened.
42:57He's a very dangerous man.
42:59He's a very smooth talker.
43:01He's adept at getting
43:02what he wants out of people
43:04and adept at getting
43:05things he wants
43:06and comforts he wants.
43:08I believe now
43:09he will stop at nothing
43:10to get what he wants
43:11if he was let out.
43:14I think he has
43:15a lot of secrets
43:16and I think there's a lot
43:17that his own family
43:18doesn't know.
43:19I would love to today
43:24get some closure
43:25on where Jamie's body is.
43:29I want to know
43:30where she is.
43:31I want to know
43:31what actually happened.
43:33And I don't think
43:35anybody will ever know
43:36what actually happened
43:37but I wish I did.
43:40I wish I could provide
43:40it to her family.
43:45Where's Jamie?
43:46Where's her body?
43:51What did you do with her?
