00:00Ever wonder how one draft pick can haunt a coach's career for years?
00:05Reflecting on his time as an NBA coach, Stan Van Gundy has identified one draft choice
00:09he deeply regrets, not selecting Devin Booker for the Detroit Pistons in the 2015 NBA draft.
00:15The now Amazon Prime NBA analyst appeared on the Zach Lowe show this week and explained
00:20that his coaching career might still be active today if he had picked the Michigan-born player
00:23with the eighth overall selection. Van Gundy held the roles of head coach and president
00:27of basketball operations for the Pistons from 2014 to 2018. Had I drafted Devin Booker in Detroit I
00:34might still be coaching, but I did not. Van Gundy stated, every time Devin Booker has a great game,
00:39I kick myself, physically kick myself, just to make sure I feel that pain. Instead of Booker,
00:46Van Gundy and the Pistons chose former Arizona forward Stanley Johnson with the number eight pick.
00:52Johnson played for Detroit for four seasons. Before being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans
00:57during the 2019 NBA season, Johnson currently plays for the Nagasaki Velka, a professional
01:03basketball team in Japan. Van Gundy and the Pistons separated after the 2018 NBA season.
01:09His most recent NBA coaching role was with the Pelicans in 2021. In contrast, Devin Booker was
01:15drafted by the Phoenix Suns with the 13th overall pick. He is now in his 11th season with the Suns
01:20and is the franchise's all-time leading scorer, with 17,002 points. Booker has been selected to
01:27the All-Star game four times, was named to the All-NBA first team in 2022, and reached the NBA
01:32finals in 2021. Additionally, he has won two Olympic gold medals, 2020-2024, as a member of the U.S.
01:41men's national basketball team. During the most recent offseason, Booker signed a two-year contract
01:46extension with the Suns worth $145 million, which will keep him with the team through the 20-29-30
01:53season. So, what's a decision from your past that you still kick yourself about today?
