00:00Welcome back.
00:01In Chile, the labor code allows the mass dismissal of workers for company-related reasons.
00:07And it's not just a lot in a single holding.
00:11There have already been 1,000 layoffs.
00:13Our correspondent Paula Dragny with more details.
00:16There's no Christmas spirit here.
00:22Any of these workers could be next.
00:24Mass layoffs are a reality in one of Chile's most powerful holdings, Sencosid, whose corporate
00:29tower rises almost like a skyscraper in Santiago.
00:34In just the first half of this year, the supermarket chain Jumbo recorded profits of more than 180%.
00:45This represents profits of nearly 200 billion pesos.
00:48It makes no sense or logic to apply the article on needs of the company for this number of
00:52layoffs.
00:53Already 1,000 have been dismissed for company-related reasons.
00:59It's an article of the labor code that authorizes the dismissal of workers without further
01:02explanation.
01:08This article is absolutely backward, since it has existed since 1981 as part of Jose Pinera's
01:13labor plan A labor code, also created under dictatorship.
01:17It is time to change it.
01:18More than 40 years cannot have passed, and we still continue with the labor code, whose framework
01:23was made under dictatorship.
01:27It was precisely during the dictatorship when its founder, the controversial German migrant
01:32Horst Paulmann, consolidated his fortune.
01:35In July 2024, he gave this improvised interview to small entrepreneur Francois Puzet.
01:44So here too is the call, and for the workers of Chile to think very carefully when it comes
01:48time to vote.
01:50We find it quite contradictory that workers are voting for our executioners.
01:54But they are not happy, despite the fact that at the magnate's funeral in March of this
02:02year, those now called collaborators took part in the cortege.
02:07Perhaps this is one of the main problems Chilean neoliberalism diluted the working-class
02:11consciousness, the consciousness of the worker class.
02:18I believe that out of fear of losing their jobs, people are protesting very little.
02:23I feel there is a fear of confronting the boss.
02:26I believe that we, the workers, are the ones absent from the streets.
02:36It is not the workers themselves.
02:38With this flag as a class present in the March, on Women's Day, or mostly not even
02:43on May 1st.
02:45For the classes central, it is key to take up this idea that is not just theory.
02:55How many of those workers who mourn Paulmann are today without a job?
03:01For all those who live off a salary, for all those whose lives are thrown into disorder
03:05when that salary doesn't arrive, no matter if they earn the minimum wage or three, for
03:10million pesos because at the level things are, it affects you just the same.
03:14To recognize oneself as part of a class, the working class.
03:18We are the ones who produce the wealth.
03:20If tomorrow we don't get up and go to work, we are the ones who move the factories and the
03:25owners of the factories, of the companies, don't need us.
03:30But up to now, neither the holding company nor the associated businesses carrying out the
03:38mass layoffs have made contact with the unions.
03:41Electoral times.
03:46So here too is the call.
03:47And for the workers of Chile to think very carefully when it comes time to vote, we find
03:51it quite contradictory that workers are voting for our executioners.
03:54At the ballot boxes this coming December 14th, the workers who will have their say.
