00:51Hello, welcome to From the South. I am Lorena Font from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:56We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:10Cuba's authorities announced a plan of strategic measures to confront the energy blockade by the United States.
01:16The plan focuses on optimizing fuel resources, prioritizing vital services for the population,
01:22and accelerating the move toward energy sovereignty with renewable resources.
01:26It also decided to concentrate administrative activities from Monday to Thursday.
01:32In light of this, the government reaffirmed its commitment to social welfare and national security,
01:36ensuring that basic health services will remain a priority,
01:40with an emphasis on medical emergency, maternal and child health, and the cancer program.
01:46They have led us to implement a set of measures, first and foremost to ensure the vitality of our country
01:58and the vitality of essential services without giving up on development.
02:02We have two main fronts to address in the current situation.
02:12One is food production and the other is power generation.
02:18It has also been decided to concentrate the main administrative activities from Monday to Thursday,
02:27increasing efficiency and providing various administrative services to the population.
02:32Since we don't have enough fuel, we cannot sell as much per client as in previous weeks,
02:41so there will be some purchase limitations.
02:46The National Executive Committee of the Pan-African National Movement of Uganda
02:51expresses solidarity with the Cuban people and government
02:54condemning the recent escalation of persistent aggression by the U.S. Administration.
02:59In a statement, they expressed that we formally condemn the recent escalation of persistent aggression
03:05by the U.S. Administration, specifically the implementation of punitive terrorist systems against friendly sovereign nations
03:12that provide essential energy resources to Cuba.
03:16Africa's bond with Cuba is not one of more diplomatic convenience.
03:20It is a bond forged in the trenches of liberation from the battlefields of Angola
03:26to educational scholarships and medical clinics in rural villages.
03:30Cuba has consistently demonstrated a high-caliber commitment to Africa and the Global South in general.
03:37They also continued the statement,
03:40For 60 years, Cuba has defended Africa's right to exist.
03:44Today, we affirm that any attack on Cuban sovereignty is an attack on the collective dignity of the Pan-African world.
03:50Therefore, the Pan-African movement will not be silent spectator to the vile and unethical strangulation of our brothers and sisters.
03:58We urge the international community, and specifically the people of the United States,
04:04to demand an end to the failed faceless experiment of cruelty that has lasted 60 years.
04:17In Belgium, citizens gathered in front of the parliament in an act of solidarity with the Cuban people.
04:23Protesters demanded the immediate lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade that the United States has maintained on the island for more than six decades.
04:32Participants carried banners with slogans such as
04:35Stop the blockade on Cuba in solidarity with the Cuban people,
04:38chanting slogans calling for an end to the unilateral coercive measures that mainly affect the civilian population.
04:45The protest is being held in conjunction with several European Union member states that have demonstrated their support and cooperation with the Cuban people.
04:58In Ecuador, under the slogans hands off, social sectors demand respect for the sovereignty of peoples in the face of constant imperialist aggressions against various nations.
05:13The Saturday's Simon Bolivar monument in Alameda Park was the setting for a day of international solidarity.
05:19From 11am, protesters gathered to demand an end to foreign interference in Cuba, Venezuela, Palestine and Iran.
05:26The meeting aimed to raise awareness of the struggle against external pressures and shredding the bonds of mutual support among the sectors gathered at this emblematic point in the city.
05:37On Saturday, LGBTIQ+, feminists and human rights organizations gathered in Buenos Aires, the Argentinian capital, for the second annual anti-fascist, anti-racist Pride March.
05:58The call to action started from Plaza del Congreso and made its way to Plaza de Mayo to denounce the political and social cause of Javier Miller's government.
06:07The march followed by the massive mobilization on February 1st, which was in response to the Argentinian president's statements at the Divos Forum,
06:17where he linked LGTBIQ+, identity with pedophilia and compared what he described as gender ideology to cancer.
06:26In the same way, these protests united the popular sectors oppressed by the official hate speech of the Argentinian leader and his neoliberal agenda.
06:35Well, in Argentina, for a little over a year now, since Millet took office, since this government took office and its descent into violence towards diversity, hate crimes have been on the rise.
06:50Lately, there has been a 70% increase, which is outrageous. We believe that we must put a stop to this. The truth is that my personal position is that we have to take action and respond.
07:03In other words, we have to stop talking to this fascist government, which is running rampant, and we can no longer ask anything more of it.
07:10We cannot give it any more time because people are dying because of this, because they set fire to the lesbian center, because they attacked, the police killed a young man for being homosexual in Cordoba, Samuel.
07:25It is important to be out on the street, especially so that the community understand that this is a joint struggle, that we will get through this together, that we cannot allow this to happen, that we cannot let.
07:37In Venezuela was held a ceremony in honor to those who lost their lives in the January 3rd attacks perpetrated by the United States in the country, which resulted in the kidnapping of President Maduro.
07:49Our correspondent, Brian Mayer, brings us the details.
07:53On February 7th, the Venezuelan government held a ceremony to honor the victims of the January 3rd U.S. bombing attack, which killed 100 people during the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Congresswoman Celia Flores.
08:09The event was held in Guiana Ezequiva Theatre in Caracas, in the city of Guiana Ezequiva, in the city of Guiana Ezequiva, in the city of Guiana Ezequiva.
08:35The event was held in Guiana Ezequiva Theatre in Caracas, and featured speeches by political leaders, including Congressman Nicolas Maduro Guerra, son of the kidnapped President, as well as family members of the victims, who expressed their indignation with the actions of the United States government.
08:54It was the action of someone who thinks he is a king, but no imperialists can come to govern Venezuela, because Article 5 of the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic states that sovereignty resides in the people, and we elect our president through voting.
09:12Right? Everyone exercised their right, so they cannot come to kidnap, because it was a kidnapping. They have kidnapped our president.
09:21The event culminated with the formation of a committee to provide permanent support and fight for justice for the family members of victims of the United States government's January 3 attack.
09:32These were to undertake with absolute loyalty, ethics and a critical sense, the responsibility of joining this committee and becoming guardians of the memory and the voices of those whom terrorism sought to silence.
09:48Saturday, February 7th, marked 35 days since the kidnapping of Venezuela's constitutional president Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Celia Flores.
09:59Brian Mir, Telesur, Caracas.
10:03And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English, where you will find news in different formats, news updates and more.
10:13We'll be right back. Stay with us.
10:15Welcome back to From the South. Layoffs in the United States reached their highest levels in 2009, with 180,435 jobs lost in January.
10:39This figure represents an alarming increase compared to the previous month and contrast sharply with January 2014, when approximately 50,000 jobs were lost.
10:50Comparatively, the volume of jobs cuts grew by 205% compared to December, marking the beginning of the most challenging year for the layoffs since the 2009 financial crisis.
11:02This phenomenon coincides with the new economic agenda of President Donald Trump, whose tariffs and tax restructuring policies are forcing companies to make preventative adjustments to their workforces.
11:14Also in the United States, people disapprove of President Donald Trump's administration.
11:28According to Rasmussen Report's poll, 57% of U.S. citizens disapprove of President Trump's performance, while 41% are in favor.
11:38People's interviews say the Trump administration has not met yet their expectations due to its anti-immigrant policies and plans to occupy sovereign, independent nations.
11:50The survey has revealed the President's leadership skills in addressing the country's problems, mostly the economy, health care, food, security, housing and public services.
12:02The United States government planned to hold the first meeting of leaders of the Peace Council on the Gaza Strip on February 19th.
12:18The conference is expected to focus on fundraising for the supposed reconstruction of the coastal enclave following the United States' support of Israel's genocidal actions that killed over 72,000 Palestinians and leveled the place.
12:34This initiative has raised concern among some experts about the possibility of the Council undermining the role of the United Nations.
12:42The meeting will take place after walks between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
12:49In Italy, protests against the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics have begun.
13:03Demonstrators gather in Milan carrying signs and banners criticizing the environmental impact of the Games and the presence of U.S. immigration custom enforcement agents.
13:14According to Washington, ICE agents are in Italy to protect the U.S. delegation.
13:19However, their presence is causing discontent among civil society.
13:24The protests were organized by the Unsustainable Olympics Committee and included the participation on various social labor and student organizations.
13:44Spain is getting ready for a storm Marta which will affect roads and municipalities in the south of the country.
13:55Authorities report at least 11,000 people having been displaced due to the recent weather events in the country.
14:02The preemptive evacuation of nearly 2,000 residents of the Grazalema Municipality in Andalusia was ordered to do the risk of landslides and flooding caused by continuous rains.
14:15The measure was prompted by reports of subsurface instability caused by weather seepage and low-intensity earthquakes.
14:22The residents were relocated to nearby towns while emergency teams assessed the stability of the area.
14:28It's raining very hard. The parking lot wall is falling down and the Monte Aque reservoir is about to burst, apparently.
14:44Geologists believe there might be seismic activity or something like that and as a precaution they have sent us here to avoid a major catastrophe.
14:57On February 8th, the second round of Portuguese presidential elections will be held.
15:04Candidates include former Socialist Party Minister Antonio José Seguro and far-right leader Andre Ventura.
15:11More than 11 million Portuguese citizens are called to the polls for the round of elections on Sunday.
15:17According to Portuguese election laws to be elected in the first round, a candidate needs to obtain more than 50% of the votes.
15:25For the first time in 40 years, the country will need a run of elections to determine the winner.
15:31Former Minister Antonio José Seguro of the Socialist Party and Andre Ventura, the far-right founder of the Chega Party were the two most voted candidates in the first round out of a total of 11 contenders.
15:46According to the results confirmed by the court, former Minister Antonio José Seguro of the Socialist Party, the former Minister Antonio José Seguro of the Socialist Party
15:52and voting in Japan's general elections began on Sunday morning in which a total of 102,084 candidates are competing for the 465 seats in the House of Representatives.
16:06The main focus of the election is whether the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and the Innovation for All Party will secure a majority, allowing Prime Minister Sanae Takaishi to continue her administration.
16:20Alternatively, the opposition could expand its strength and block that outcome.
16:25Polling stations against the country will close at 8 p.m. local time and the vote count is expected to last until late at night.
16:34Of the 465 seats in the lower house, 289 will be chosen in single-member districts and 176 will be chosen throughout proportional representation in 11 regional blocks.
16:48Whether the LPD, the ruling party ends up holding a large number of seats will determine whether the discussion moves toward revising the constitution.
17:01I believe how many seats the LDP wins will greatly change Japanese politics, including the issue of constitutional revision.
17:13In this election, various parties are putting forward policies such as abolishing the consumption tax.
17:22That may sound good right now, but I am very concerned about whether it is truly a responsible policy for the generations that come after us.
17:30What worries me the most is not just the present, but what will happen to Japan in the future.
17:38We have a second show break coming up before we invite you to visit for another episode of Overlap Conversations from across the world.

18:38The Zionist regime has Israel has killed more than 72,000 Palestinians in Gaza.
18:44The Israeli army continues to open fire daily on Palestinian citizens in the enclave, violating the ceasefire imposed by the West.
18:52In this regard, the Palestinian Ministry of Health has reported that the death toll has risen to 72,027 with 171,651 injured.
19:04In addition, organizations report that the stocks of most medicines and medical supplies in Gaza hospitals are exhausted.
19:12They also pointed out that the hospitals that remain in operation have become mere waiting rooms for thousands of patients and injured people facing an unknown fate.
19:22And in Gaza, the collapse of its healthcare infrastructure continues to threaten the lives of thousands of Palestinians.
19:36Health authorities warn that the few hospitals still operating are struggling to provide services in the face of continued Israeli attacks.
19:45They also emphasize that the shortage of medicines and supplies means that they are unable to deal with the crisis.
19:52In addition, they warn that the facilities are operating at over 150% of their capacity, while they lack a 45% of essential medicines, 66% of medical supplies and 84% of laboratory and blood banks material.
20:10Also in Palestine, over 35 gays and children have been killed by Israeli occupation forces.

20:33Amid a social crisis, the UN agency launched a campaign to bring hundreds of thousands of children back to schools destroyed by the conflict.
