Taiwan plans a one-year suspension of the Chinese app RedNote over security and fraud concerns, drawing opposition claims of censorship.

00:00Taiwan's government is defending a plan to suspend access to the Chinese social media app Xiaohongshu, also known as Red Note, for one year, citing security risks and a sharp rise in fraud cases.
00:13But the move has sparked accusations of censorship from the opposition, Kuomintang, who said banning the app was a major restriction of internet freedom.
00:22Kuomintang's Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun accused the ruling Democratic Progressive Party of strangling free speech in the name of national security.
00:33Taiwanese authorities say Red Note has been linked to more than 1,700 fraud cases since 2024 and failed to provide data security guarantees.
00:43The platform has about 3 million users in Taiwan. It has yet to comment on the proposed ban.
00:49Taiwan has long warned of disinformation threats from Chinese-owned apps as Beijing steps up political and cyber pressure.
00:58Officials have also accused China of spreading influence through Western social media platforms, even while banning them at home.
