00:01Come back, get your damn pants up to your damn stomach.
00:06Big congratulations are in order for writer-director Jordan Peele.
00:10His comedy horror film Get Out made history Tuesday morning as the Academy
00:13announced its nominees for the 90th Oscars.
00:16Peele's socially aware offering earned a coveted Best Picture nomination,
00:20as well as directing and original screenplay nods for Peele,
00:22making him only the third person in history to earn noms in all three categories
00:27for a directorial debut.
00:28Star Daniel Kaluuya, meanwhile, was nominated for Best Actor.
00:32Peele is also only the fifth African-American to earn a Best Director nomination
00:35in Oscar history. So far, none has won.
00:38Last year, Barry Jenkins was nominated for Moonlight, which went on to win Best Picture.
00:42Steve McQueen made the shortlist in 2013 for 12 Years a Slave, also a Best Picture winner.
00:47Lee Daniels was nominated for Precious in 2009.
00:50And John Singleton became the first ever African-American nominee in the category
00:54in 1991 for Boys in the Hood.
00:56Also worth noting for Get Out is its genre.
00:58Only a handful of horror films have earned Best Picture nominations.
01:02In the 1940s, three thrillers were listed in the category.
01:05Alfred Hitchcock's 1941 film Suspicion and his 1945 offering Spellbound
01:09and George Cukor's Gaslight from 1944.
01:12In 1973, a more traditional horror film, The Exorcist, scared up a Best Picture nomination,
01:18while 1991's The Silence of the Lambs took home the Oscar.
01:21M. Night Shyamalan's 1999 thriller The Sixth Sense is another past film in the genre
01:25to land a Best Picture nomination.
01:27Another interesting factor is Get Out's February 2017 release date.
01:31Most Oscar contenders open in the fall, timed to the heart of awards season.
